Time Machine on WD MyCloud - DMG Problem

Hello,
Recently I've bought an external drive: WD MyCloud, which is connected to my wireless router by ethernet so I can access it anywhere.
Inside of WD Software there is Time Machine options, I've just enabled and then I've set on OS X Time Machine on to the WD MyCloud.
The first "problem" is that is on DMG file and I'm not sure if its the best option, because when I use to backup up on TM to other external drive, the backup was made into normal folders and then I could just go to a specific date (without opening time machine functionality on OS X) and just restore a file.
Now I can't do anything with that DMG (not mount), but I'm able to access to files over TM functionality on OS X .
The second "problem" is that every 3 days it says me that TM needs to create a new backup to increase the "reliability" of the backups and when I access time machine to restore its like it restarted and deleted everything.
What am I doing wrong and how to fix it?
Thank you in advance,
Sílvio

Time Machine and the drive you bought are not compatible, if you want to use a NAS, use a Time Capsule.

56 day Time Machine backups. and 27” iMac problems.
I have a problem and its driving me to mad. I wish to backup my iMac to a separate hard drive, When I start TimeMachine backup there is a window that appears ,I switch on Time Machine , select my Verbatim separate hard drive which I have partitioned into three section , one called time machine backups, and click ‘backup now’ the process starts by stating ‘436GB of 500GB available’, Preparing Backup’ and this stays there for ages and then when it does start to backup states backing up 234 byts of 28.3 GB . I left my IMac on for fifteen hours and it still read the same , 234 byts of 28.3 GB also at one time showed ‘time remaining’ as 56 Days. It will not allow me to reformat the Verbatim and will not allow me to eject the backup hard drive. On disc repair it says things are OK, disk partitions are OK. Could I have damaged the Verbatim Hard drive when I previously forced a shut down as it was taking so long and would not eject theVerbatim hard drive. Also Just recently it has been impossible to shut down the iMac as ‘Messages’  is working and won't even force quit. I switch of at the mains.     Please help.
    Equipment.
iMac 27” 3.2 GHz intel core i5 [four months old]
    Running OS X Yosemite
    Verbatim [SamsungHD]  [three years old]
Partitioned in Three , Formatted as Mac OS Extended [Journaled]
    connected by USB 2 Cable
    Thanks.

First you should NEVER EVER partition a Time Machine or any other backup drive for anythings else but backup. This is likely why you are having issues, buy yourself a high quality EHD such as an OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro, format it correctly and make that  your Time Machine backup HD.

  • If i do a backup on 10.5.8 on time machine will there be any problems if I have to restore from an older OS?

Running 10.5.8 on my iMac - aiming to upgrade first to 10.6.3 and then to Lion.  if i do a backup on 10.5.8 on time machine will there be any problems if I have to restore once I get to Lion?

I think a bootable clone is a far better/safer way to go.
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

  • Time Machine in OS10.6.8 Problem

    I'm on a late 2007 (2,1) Mac Pro. Running OS10.6.8
I was using Time Machine quite successfully with no problems until fairly recently when my TM Hard drive got full. I decided to change the TM HDD to a bigger one (both are external FW800). The drive WAS at the end of a 3 FW daisy chain. Since then I've tried moving it to the front FW800 port. But I'm still having the same problem:
When I run TM I very soon get the following message and TM stops:
"TM could not complete the backup. Unable to complet backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder."
I'm tried trashing my TM preferences (In Mac HD/Library/Pref). Same issue.
I've also run Disk warrior on my prgram drive and fixed permissions issues. On running Disk Warrior "File check" there are issues that WILL NOT repair: 2 weird looking plists (from Malware maybe?) for which it says "Detected that the Property List data is damaged and cannot be repaired." I cannot delete these since it's in a root folder which I don't have permission to access for some reason....
    Can anybody tell me:
    1. Why time Machine is not working?
    2. Are these 2 weird Plists something to do with it, and regardless, are they bad?...
    Thanks!

Yes. Drive is formatted to Mac OS Extended Journaled.
    Plist errors attached.

  • Time Machine and Snow Leopard installation problem

I'm trying to install Snow Leopard, but keep getting an error saying that my hard drive is used for time machin back ups. I have unplugged my external device, turned off time machine, yet this keeps happening. What am I doing wrong? I have been able to install Leopard on the computers that I haven't used time machine.

    BusyChris18 wrote:
    1) Do I have to do anything special with Time Machine BEFORE I install SL? I have been doing regular backups with TM.
Do a "final" backup and turn TM off.
    2) should Time machine disc be off/disconnected when I do the install?
It's safest to eject and disconnect it, "just in case."
    3) After I reconnect TM disc after SL install, do I have to "migrate" stuff from TM? OR will it just do a new backup and work like normal from that point forward.
If you do the normal install, there's no migration needed. 99.9 % of everything will be fine. In some rare cases of 3rd-party apps putting things in unusual places, there may be a problem, and you may need to re-enter some 3rd-party app purchase codes.
If you erase the drive, then install SL, then yes, of course, you'll have to transfer your data. There should be no reason to do that, but some folks seem to do it out of habit. If you do that, when your Mac boots up again, you can transfer your data from the TM backups. And if you do that, I'd strongly recommend making a separate full backup on a second external drive, again "just in case," preferably a "bootable clone." CarbonCopyCloner and SuperDuper are the most common. (There was a post here just last week where someone did this, the restore got to 99%, then BAM! the TM disk failed.)
TM backups should just continue normally, although there will almost certainly be a long "Calculating Changes" phase (used to be called "Preparing"). And they've added a progress bar, which doesn't seem to be particularly accurate.
However, it may try a new, full backup. If it does, cancel the backup and do a Restart. That may reset whatever confused it. If not, there's nothing you can do to prevent it.
    4) Will I be able to access files that were backuped when I have just Leopard?
    Yes.

  • Time Machine and "might be a problem with your network"

Hi! My Power Mac is from 2008, and I'm in the middle of replacing my hard drive. Here's a summary of what I've gone through, including various trouble shooting...
OK, the hard drive dies (all of which I wrote about in an earlier thread and, I think, not very relevant for this thread). While waiting to buy my replacement, I created an external bootable drive, hooked up via FW800. I created a new User Account, and then I used the Migration Assistant to bring in all the user settings, files, etc, from my Time Machine. It took many hours and and during the stage when it was transferring files, it gave me the prompt: "There might be a problem with your network. The other Mac is not responding. Make sure that all of your network devices are connected and turned on. Also, make sure that your Ethernet cables are still connected properly to your computer and to the network, or if using AirPort, that the base station is in range and turned on." After clicking "Continue" got me nowhere, I clicked Cancel, and it was a very incomplete migration [no apps, no files]. I didn't sweat this since this external drive is a temporary solution anyway.
Tonight I came home with the new internal drive, installed it, installed Leopard, and began the Setup Assistant. I got the same prompt as last night. NOTE: This time with Setup Assistant; last night was with Migration Assistant.
I notice from reviewing the boards that this Time Machine glitch seemed to happen a few years ago, in Leopard, and maybe hasn't happened since. But I haven't read a thread with a solution. (Maybe I missed it?)
A few things come to mind:
    1. Could there be an issue with the fact that the computer is only 10.5 and many of the files/apps may have been installed when I was running 10.5.8? I'm just tossing that out there. For instance, what if I set up an initial User account, then updated the software to 10.5 and THEN used Migration Assistant to bring in the older account?
    2. Soon, since I'm reinstalling Leopard, I'll get the prompt to use Setup Assistant, and this time I'll just select account settings and apps. I'll bring in the files manually, later. Since the progress window seems to get hung up during the file-transferring stage, maybe I'll have better luck if I skip that.
If anyone has any suggestions, man, I'd be way grateful!
    Thanks!

"try trashing the timemachine.plist in your original user's Library>Preferences."
I didn't even get to that step. Here's what happened.
I went back to my original Admin account (the one I restored via Setup Assistant, from my Time Machine backup), and ran Migration Assistant again. I selected Applications only and when it gave me a prompt about the account name already existing. So, I created a new account name (TEMP 1, I called it).
All of my applications were restored.
Next, I tried it with all the files and folders. It didn't give me the duplicate name prompt this time. It copied all my flles and folders over.
Was it perfect? Well, a lot of the apps need some fresh registration and some upgrading, but I suppose that's to be expected. Or is it?
While I feel like this problem is in my rear-view mirror, I'm still interested in your suggestons for a Time Machine altenative.
    Thanks again for your advice!

  • Time machine osx 10.6.8 problem slow backupd CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary. mdworker32 kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.

Hello Guys I have a problem that I can not get to the bottom.
Time Machine has suddenly stopped working it really slow to make up. Copy a few kb at a time and long hours it takes to close the back. (up to a few tens of megs, 10, 20 Mb).
I made the following list of tests that will follow along with the log file.
First of all I made a copy as root with Carbon Copy Cloner disk of the iMac. (So that they can go back in case of disaster)
Following the guides Pondini (pondini.org) I did the following steps:
    1) Changed the internfaccia FW800 to USB hard drive (does not change anything, still slow)
    2) Changed to another external HD for time machine with FW800 and USB (nothing changes still slow)
    3) Recreated the full backup with Time Machine on either drive (still slow)
    4) Reinstalled the 10.6.8 Combo Pack (still slow)
    5) Re spootlight indexed with the disk (still slow)
    6) At this point, in desperation I reinstalled on the internal drive of my iMac 10.6.8 creating a new user, User Migration Assistant from my hd clone with Carbon Copy Cloner. Recreated the full backup with Time Machine.
The first full backup is fast, but slow incremental backups are back (as to 'start a few kb at a time).
I compared the log files with those of my other machine with same configuration and I found these errors:
backupdir [19376]: CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData (): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary.
mdworker32 [20950]: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint () to catch errors logged as They Are.
You know help me? I saw that this error is from 10.5 to 10.7, but no one has found a real solution to the issue.
I never installed antivirus software and tried with different external drives COPN capacity equal to or greater than the external drive. Only at the end I tried to divide the external drive to back up into two parts by a 1.5 TB and 500 GB but with the same mistakes that I have described.
    thanks
    Stefano
backupd[19376]: CFPropertyListCreateFromXMLData(): Old-style plist parser: missing semicolon in dictionary.
mdworker32[20950]: kCGErrorFailure: Set a breakpoint @ CGErrorBreakpoint() to catch errors as they are logged.
Sapete darmi aiuto?
    grazie
    Stefano

Then I stopped by the timemachine reindexed spootlight 'option in the preferences panel spootight privacy. After I restarted my iMac and formatted the external drive again, Time Machine and restarting a full backup. This morning after a quick full backup and disk indexing completed incremental backups are always slow. Proceeds with a few kb at a time. I resend you the log files and screen capture. My iMac is constantly backed up.
    Thank you for your time.

  • HT201250 Time Machine Solution to Microsoft Word Problem

Can Time Machine be used to remedy a problem with Microsoft word for MAC?  Suddenly, any new or revised document in "Word" cannot be saved.  Word freezes when I'm trying to save a document.  I went into Time Machine and clicked on word to resolve the problem, but it just duplicated what I already saved. Is there any way to get back to where the Microsoft Word Program was using Time Machine?  Please help.  Another question:  If I uninstall and reinstall "word", can I use the same product ID to reinstall the program?

    OK - this is solved.
I followed the instructions from the right hand column under "Re: I cannot enter time machine when I press the icon to enter time machine".
Basically it was some sort of disply glitch. Unplugging the Cinema Display and restarting the computer allowed the system to enter the "outer space" view again.
Plugging in the Cinema Display again hasn't recreated the problem.
    Thanks for helping out.

  • Time machine and hard drive space problems

It's a long story, but in a nutshell...I've had some problems with my time machine backups on my external hard drive and my MacBook Pro has been taking a long time time boot up.  So, I decided to wipeout the backups on my external by deleting them (I know that's a bad idea) and then I started to transfer all the stuff from my MacBook Pro that I wanted to backup, and now I have ran out of room on the external (1TB) drive.  However, the space that is being used doesn't seem to match what should be available.  There is around 200gb (I think) that isn't accounted for.....is there some hidden stuff I might have missed?

johnl927 is suggesting you wipe your external hard drive to remove any ghost files or errors in the file system. That would be the fastest and least time consuming way to go.
Your alternative is to run Disk Utility, verify disk and the partitions of the external hard drive, and if still in doubt verify permissions. The disk may sometimes claim to have less free space than really available because at some point in the past your computer or else where you plugged it in forgot to do some general housekeeping on the external hard drive.

  • Time Machine fails repeatedly with no problem detected on the external disk

Since a couple of days, Time Machine fails repeatedly, several times a day. I repair the disk with the Disk utility, that finds no error, then I reset Time Machine as indicated, and after one or two successful backups, it fails again, with the following report given by the Time Machine Buddy widget:
    Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/Copies de sauvegarde Time machine/Backups.backupdb
Error: (22) setxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.ModelID path:/Volumes/Copies de sauvegarde Time machine/Backups.backupdb/iMac de MM size:8

Error: (22) setxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.ModelID path:/Volumes/Copies de sauvegarde Time machine/Backups.backupdb/iMac de MM size:8
    Backup failed with error: 2
I insist, the disk utility doesn't find any problem in the external USB disk. Should I reinstall the OS?
Thanks a lot for any help!

  • "Time Machine completed successfully", restart.   Problem - Does not boot?

Time machine is on an external HD - works fine. Installed a new 1TB HD into a Dual PPC G5 MAC. Used Leopard disk to go to UTILITIES - PARTITION - ERASE on the new HD. Everything looked good. I then RESTORED FROM BACKUP under UTILITIES. I did not reinstall the Leopard OS from the disc, since it was on time machine. Proceeded to restore and after two hours, I got a message that stated "RESTORE COMPLETE SUCCESSFULLY", restart computer. Took out the Leopard disc, restarted computer and that is where I experienced the following. PROBLEM: On booting, I hear the music; then get the gray apple; then get the gear going around for a few minutes; then black screen; then the process starts over again. It will just keep up this loop until pressing the power off. Got out the leopard disc. Went to UTILITIES - REPAIR DISC - "appears ok". Then REPAIRED PERMISSIONS - Warning - came back with four SUID files that were modified but not repaired. It stated that permissions were repaired. I look at the new HD in UTILITIES and it looks like 204GB of data is on it, which is from the restore from TIME MACHINE. Do not see anything that appears wrong. Any help would sure be appreciated as I am not sure what to do next.

Solved this problem differently than what I would have guessed. Did a lot of reading and it seems that I did everything according to how it was supposed to be done. Went back in and redid time machine and this took hours to accomplish. Used the Leopard disc again and ran into the identical problem. I decided to install Leopard and then I restored the time machine to the new hard drive. Nothing else I tried worked until I installed the OS. From there it was rather easy and it appears that everything is as it was on the original HD. I would still like to understand why restore did not work the other way. I'm on an iMac now but will be back to the G5 shortly. Good luck if anyone runs into this problem.

  • Time Machine Backups external drive developed problem which the disk repair utility cannot fix, so suggested reformat. I can't reformat because the "Resource Busy". How can I reformat this drive?

My Western Digital external hard drive which I use as a Time Machine Backup stopped working. I tried repairing the disk using the Disk Utility program, but got the message that the utility can't repair the disk and to erase and reformat the disk. When I try that, I get the message the operation can't be completed because "Resource Busy", even though Time Machine is turned off. Any suggestions for repairing the drive/disk?
    Thank you.

  • Time Machine and .dmg

    Snow Leopard 10.6.8
    external hard drive (GUID)
1 partion (Mac OS Extended Journaled)
    1 x sparsebundle.dmg (Mac OS Extended Journaled)
I formatted the drive specifically for Time Machine to use the .dmg for it's backup - but in TM preferences I can't see the .dmg as a "select disk" option. It's mounted and I can read/write to the .dmg.
What am I doing wrong? It's driving me crazy.
I've reformatted the drive 3 times, but still no joy. I've reset PRAM.

Hi, a quick update...discovered that you can do it and I succeeded to create backup to .dmg with encryption where TM will automount the .dmg
I'm left with a Keychain problem which I've yet to crack, but my objective of having a password protected external drive for TM backups is met, so I'm happy. It's not 100% perfect in terms of accessing the backups via TM interface, but that's not an issue.

  • Time Machine Problem after restore

I had a hard drive crash, and after repair, I restored from a time machine back.  Everything seemed fine, although a few sets of photos were missing from iPhoto.  After things seemed to be fine I have started doing time machine backups again.
My problem is that they take a very long time to complete.  I expected the first one or two to take a long time, but not since then.  I have given it weeks to make sure that it has had enough time.
Every single time the verifcation stage shows 10s of thousands of files.  Even if I have not made any changes.  In my console log I see:
    6/7/12 11:17:34 AM
    com.apple.backupd[61578]
    Node requires deep traversal:/Users/dersh/Pictures/iPhoto Library reason:contains changes|must scan subdirs|fsevent|missed reservation|
For every single backup.  It seems like it is not actually fixing this.  From googling around, I expect that this should take a long time the first time or two, but then should finish.  It then says that it is backing up about 600 meg.  The exect number seems to change with each backup, depending on what I am doing, and what changes I have made.  But even if I do nothing, it still is in that range.  It then appears to complete, although it takes a long time.  I would guess that since it is doing the deep traverse it then has to match up a bunch of files, so doing the actual backup takes much longer then it should.  For example it might sit for a good few minutes at "backing Up:  105.2 MB of 580.2 MB" Then it moves on to 107.6.  Finally, the cleanup takes a very long time.  So overall each backup is taking 10s of minutes.  Even if I am not doing anything with the computer.
I am using a firewire drive directly connected to the computer.  I have done a repair of the external time machine drive, and have done a verify of the internal drive, with no issues.
I see that I have plenty of space on the external drive.
So, it seems like what is happening is that it doesn't "know" that it has done a succesful backup of iPhoto, each time so it does a deep traverse  and then backsup something like 600 meg of data from there.  How can I get it to "understand" that it has done this?  Can I force it to do it once correctly, so that it will take?
    Any other suggestions?

    UPDATE
Happen to have a QNAP NAS from work at the house which has Time Machine support and can select and initiate a backup there, no problem!
So, it's something about the Mac Mini or drive? I didn't do anything to the Mac Mini in the process other than removing the USB drive and plugging it back in.
As far as the drive, I dumped it and re-partitioned it with two partitions one for the Mini and one for the iMac. The Mac Mini is backing up to it locally, no problem.

  • Time machine - 2 problems I can't solve

Time Machine problems... I have them. And I have given up after spending hours googling, reading, trying and getting nowhere. I really hope there is some experts out there who have the time and energy to help me out. So, here goes. Crossing my fingers!
    Problem 1:
After putting a new hard drive in my old Macbook Pro, I did the first Time Machine backup a few days ago. Everything was fine until today, when I opened the Star Wars Display. I only have _one_ backup of my old hard drive along with about ten of my new hard drive. I have been using Time Machine for backing up to an external drive for over a year, so - where are all my old backups?
When I access the sparsebundle on my backup drive through Disk Utility, I get to Backups.backupdb > MyDriveName > about ten backup folders. The oldest being the same as I can see in the Star Wars Display.
I have checked the box in the Time Machine preferences which prompts Time Machine to tell me if older backups are being deleted. I have not gotten such a notification. So where are my old backups? Are they gone? If so, why? What did I do wrong? Why did Time Machine not warn me?
    Problem 2:
I have an old backup on the same drive as mentioned above. It is not in the form of a sparsebundle but as a folder named Backups.backupdb. It has three years worth of backups. I have not been able to access them since I formatted my old hard drive a year ago and gave it a new name in the process. Since then, the backups have been placed in the above mentioned sparsebundle.
I am able to open the backup in the Star Wars Display by choosing this backup as an alternative drive holding down the option key when clicking on the Time Machine logo in the menu bar. But all directories are just empty shortcut folders - exactly as if I just open the folders in the backup folders in the Backups.backupdb folder. I hope that makes sense.
Is there any explanation for this? How can I access the folders, since they are not working in the Star Wars Display? Are the files gone?
Also, after I open the sparsebundle (from problem 1), it appears in Finder as a drive. Thus, I can access the sparsebundle as a regular folder. What will happen, if I move the Backups.backupdb folder to the sparsebundle? Can I try or will that just screw everyting up?
    Bonus info:
In regards to space, my backup drive has 2 TB capacity. The sparsebundle has a size of 435 GB and the Backups.backupdb folder has a size of 53 GB. But when I check the info on the drive, only 58 GB of space is left. How does that make sense in any way?
English is not my native language, so I apologize for the ramble - it is hard enough to describe technical problems without writing in a foreign language.
If anybody chooses to answer me, know that I am not familiar with Terminal, but I can follow precise instructions
    Thank you!

The backup drive is not directly connected, I backup via the network. As mentioned, I have two files/folders at the root of the hard drive: A sparsebundle and a Backups.backupdb folder. These are two different backups - the sparsebundle being the newest. I suspect that Backups.backupdb folder stems back to when I started to backup and I did connect the backup drive directly to the computer. Even though I later began to backup wirelessly, the backups continued to be saved in the folder. And then - as I tried to explain in the original post - I did a formatting of my Maca year ago, renaming and it and thus began a new backup which was being saved as a sparsebundle instead of as a Backups.backupdb folder.
I appreciate your response, however it is not solving any of my two problems - I do need my backups
