Time Machine Preference Pane very very slow

Hi,
My Time Machine backups are failing. When I open the TM preference pane it tells me that it has failed because the disk could not be found. If I click on Change Disk it goes away for ages (we're talking 1-2 mins+) with the spinning coloured disk and finally comes back with an empty list. Why would it take so long to find out how many disks are available? Is there any way of reinstalling the Time Machine element of OS X? The disk I was using is mounted.
Thanks
David

It sounds a bit like your backups may be corrupted, and TM is having a tough time figuring out what's on the drive.
Try doing a +*Repair Disk+* on your TM drive, per #A5 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Then do a "full reset" per #A4 there.

  • Can't open time machine preferences

I just did a clean install of Lion on my macbook pro.  I used migration assistant to pull most things over, but not everything. I was going to go into Time Machine to pull out a few documents, when I encountered this error message. I clicked on Open Time Machine Preferences and got: An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584).  Does anyone know what this means?

Are you re-installing from the original grey DVDs that came with your Mac, or from a retail SL installer? The retail version doesn't include iLife.
The OE discs should have iLife on disc 2, so if that's what you're using you can re-install from there.
As to what CleanMyMac has done, I don't know. To alter the apparent processor signature seems very odd. Maybe some of the other guys around here can come up with a theory.
Cleaning caches is totally unnecessary unless there's a specific problem to address; caches are there to help speed up the Mac. If you clear them, you slow down the Mac until all the various applications and processes have rebuilt their respective caches.
Removing language files can be tricky too. Remove the wrong ones and the System will cease to boot.
    Likewise for fonts.
Logs are mostly harmless to clear, but they are there for a purpose too; to help you find the source of problems. In any case, the daily maintenance task built in to the OS does all that's needed in that regard.
Could be that one of those logs may have been able to tell you what that junk did.

    Loads of logs in there.

  • Time Machine Back up is too slow

I just bought a WD 1 TB hard drive for my Macbook Pro. I put files on but for some reason the Time Machine's first back up is taking forever for only 54 gbs. Is this normal? It took me just a few minutes to put in the 25 gb of itunes data on it but the Time Machine back up is so slow. Plus the encryption is very slow too.

    Hi there Balhabib,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

  • Time Machine Preferences breaks when I wake from sleep

I have recently started having a problem.
When I start my computer, everything is functioning fine. I am able launch System Preferences and open any preference pane and quit System Preferences and everything is fine.
When I put my computer to sleep and then wake it up, I have issues. If I open System Preferences, I can close it. If I click on Trackpad, I can close it. But if I click on Time Machine Preferences and try to quit System Preferences, it doesn't quit. If I try to Force Quit, I get the standard "this app isn't responding" error box.
I cannot quit System Preferences is any way. Force Quit does nothing and eventually the rest of my apps on my machine stop functioning. I have to hard reset my machine to get System Preferences back.
Anyone else seen this? I don't want to blame it on 10.5.6 but I think that this started happening after that.

So I have made a further discovery.
It is related to my non-Time Machine external hard drive. When it is connected I have the issue mentioned above, when it's not connected I have no problem. I re-formatted the drive and no longer have the issues with the System Preferences, but now, if I sleep, when I wake I can't shut down. It just hangs and I have to hard restart.
A couple of notes from the console log. When the "bad" drive is hooked up, I see the following message (multiple times when I wake up:
    *kernel AppleYukon2: 00000000,00000000 sk98osx_dnet - recovering from missed interrupt*
Also, when I try to do the actual shutdown, I see this error:
    */usr/sbin/kdcmond[37] dnssd_clientstub read_all(3) failed 0/28 0*
So I feel like the issue is somehow connected to my eternal drive having a conflict with the wired network card. I am going to do some more tests.

  • Cannot open the Time Machine Preferences

I'm running into this new problem after upgrading a client MBP to 10.6.2.
I get an error message when trying to open the Time Machine Preferences:
The document "TimeMachine.prefPane" could not be opened. System Preferences cannot open files in the "Mac OS X Preference Pane" format.
    Has anyone seen this?
I'm using Time Capsule for the backups. It is setup to extend a network with another Time Capsule.
    Thanks

Any suggestion please - I am down to the wire and need the backup today.
Hi, and welcome to the forums.
That's a new one. It sounds like something has been copied from a PPC Mac, or something's been corrupted so badly it looks like that's where it came from.
Can you do a +Back Up Now+ from the TM icon in your Menubar?
If, as you say, TM "stopped working," you'd have to figure out why and fix it, anyway.
Can you make a partition on your TM disk that's at least 10% larger than the data on your internal HD? if so, your best bet might be to download CarbonCopyCloner. It will make a full bootable "clone" of your entire system on a separate partition. It's donationware, available at: http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html

  • I am attempting to connect an external hard drive to my airport extreme and see this hard drive under time machine preferences. I used to able to do this under Leopard, but no longer under lion, even after downloading Airport utility 5.6.

Hi, I am attempting to see my extrenal hard drive, connected to my airport extreme base station, in time machine. I formatted the disk, backed up my mackbook pro to it via usb, and now want to be able to backup over wifi with my disk connected to my airport extreme base station. I spoke with Apple Care, and they told me Apple doens't support this. I used to be able to do this with my older MB pro and under older osx's. I do see the external hard drive connected under disks, just not in time machine preferences. Is there a workaround available that anyone is aware of?
    Thank you so much,

  • Time Machine Preference Safe?

    Desktop iMac late 2013

OSX Mavericks versions 10.9.4 and 10.9.5
No lock symbol showing on Time Machine Preference.
Is that safe or is it defective?

Why wouldn't that be safe? But if you want to make it safer: open System Preferences -> Security&Privacy -> Advanced -> Select bottom option.

  • I can see my backups but there is no info in the Time Machine preferences

I recently upgraded to Lion and everything seemed OK with Time Machine but now when I click "Enter Time Machine" I can see the backups but when I open Time Machine Preferences I see "Oldest Backup: None" and "Latest Backup: None"
I have not made a new backup in fear of deleting my old backups!
I have also had some problems connecting to Time Machine — I have had to reboot Time Machine more than once and reboot my Mac Book Pro in order for the computer to see Time Machine.
All this only started after installing Lion!

I talked to AT&T and Apple.  ATT says its the phone and Apple says its not the phone.

  • Time Machine preferences window appears as Finder view after restore

I wanted to upgrade to a larger disk drive, so I backed up using Time Machine to a USB drive, and then swapped out drives and did a restore. However, after the restore, now when I click on time machine preferences from the top bar, instead of the GUI appearing, a finder view appears with timemachine.prefPane in its heading. Any ideas what is going on? If I go through the System Preferences route, it works.

  • Time machine back up is very slow and now has restarted

Just bought a new 500gb G Drive at the Apple Store to use on my MBP. Got home, connected the drive and launched Time Machine. Said the back would take 10 days . I figured, OK that's slow but at least it will get done. Checked the MBP this AM and now -- after saying there was 2 days left to complete the back up of about 90 gb remaining - it has apparently restarted and now shows only 2gb as backed up.
I ran "sudo tmdiagnose" because I read on one of the other boards here that it would successfully have TM backup at normal speed ... but it did not work.
    Help please...

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Time Machine backups have become very slow

My time machine backups to a USB attached external drive (dedicated to backups) have recently slowed horribly.  They are taking timeframes like 30 minutes to even an hour even when nothing has changed on my system.  They didn’t do that previously (usually just a couple of minutes for same).
Console ouput below.  I see MDS errors.  What are those?  Are they a concern?
I have run Disk Utility on both my hard drive and the time machine drive and they look okay.
