Time machine preparing forever and spotlight estimating indexing time

hey guys,
Im having two problems that seem to be related. time machine gets stuck on preparing with the following error in console:
Jul 18 17:03:19 Macintosh-5 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[6926]: Waiting for index to be ready (905 > 0)
Spotlight is also acting up and freezes indefinitely whilst estimating indexing time with the following console error:
Jul 18 17:03:44 Macintosh-5 mds[94]: (Error) Server: mdsync launch failed: (ipc/send) invalid destination port
I have not been able to find much on this last error on support forums. Any ideas? I have erased all spotlight indices, reset PRAM, this problems occurs when indexing both the internal and external hard drives. (The drive i am using for time machine has worked in the past.) I have also repaired disk permission etc. Any solutions without reinstalling leopard as the reason why i am trying to back up is so I can do a reinstall then!
Thanks!

I had this exact problem yesterday (Waiting for index to be ready (905 > 0)). I rebooted with the shift key held down, rebooted again, and rebuilt my Spotlight index. Now there seems to be a conflict between Spotlight and Time Machine:
Aug 26 05:03:08 Musa /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[702]: Waiting for Spotlight to finish indexing /Volumes/Backup of Musa/Backups.backupdb
I thought of adding the backup drive to Spotlight's exclusion list, but doesn't the backup drive need to be indexed by Spotlight for it to work with Time Machine?

  • Time Machine taking forever and backing up extensive files.  Help!

Ever since we upgraded my spouse's iMac, Time Machine has been acting up.  My Mac store/guru guy migrated all the files from her really old G5 to her "new" (refurbished) aluminum iMac... NOT from the external HD she used for her Time Machine back-ups.  When we connected the external HD to her new iMac, Time Machine automatically made a new back-up folder and did a complete back-up to that new folder.  That was unexpected but understandable.  After that, however, subsequent back-ups take forever, and Time Machine insists on preparing tens of thousands of files for back-up every time it runs, even though the great majority of said files had not been touched and did not need to be backed up.  I will periodically check Time Machine preferences during these interminable back-ups, and sometimes it will be stuck in the "preparing" phase, and sometimes in the "finishing up" phase.  The poor external HD just cranks and cranks and cranks.
I've read many of the Time Machine-related questions and responses, but none seem to address this particular problem.  I tried putting the external HD on the Spotlight Preferences/Privacy/Indexing exclusion list, quitting System Preferences, then opening it up again and reversing the process to see whether Spotlight would re-index the external HD (per one communities suggestion I read), but that didn't seem to take place.
I have yet to visit the site referenced several times as the Time Machine FAQ gold mine; will do that next.
    Any other ideas, anyone?

Thanks, Joe.  My software is up to date.  I forgot to mention that, after this first began happening, I erased the external HD and had Time Machine start all over again.  It did the first, complete backup overnight, but subsequent ones still take longer than they should and it still prepares 90,000 - 120,000 items when it should be doing no where near that many files on an hourly basis.  I'm wondering whether the cable needs to be changed out, as well.  We're running OS 10.6.8.

  • Time Machine "prepares" slowly and then does NOT complete B-U.

Since Christmas day, I've had a Time Machine problem.  First it takes about 40 minutes to "prepare" to back-up and then it only backs-up 15gb out of 105gb.
And the animated icon keeps rotating for hours without completing the task.    Could someone please share their knowledge on how I might be able to fix this issue?  It would be greatly appreciated.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • Spotlight - Estimating Indexing Time

If I don't exclude my RAID partitions with a privacy setting, spotlight never finishes indexing.
Unfortunately I want to spotlight search my RAID partitions. A few don't have Journaling, and a few do. Is Journaling a requirement for spotlight to work? Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get this to work?

    Hi OS Lucinity;
Having never heard of the 3Ware Sidecar before, I went out and read the link you provided.
I then did some searching and discovered this link
    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/external-raid-storage,1922-4.html
In this one it says this product is extremely slow when used in the Raid 5 configuration as you are. I would suggest talking to the vendor about your problems and seeing if they can help you.

You're probably right: your TM problems are likely one symptom of something else.
Your best bet may be to re-post in the +Using Leopard+ forum. Describe the symptoms and what you've done in as much detail as you can, including just what you did with OnyX.
You might also want to get familiar with the Console and +Activity Monitor+ apps (in your Applications/Utilities folder). They should help you home in on what's going on, as your problem(s) could be OS, app(s), hardware, or a mixture.
I'd start with Activity Monitor. Sort the list of processes by the CPU column, highest numbers on top, and select the CPU tab towards the bottom. Watch it especially when your slowdowns occur. See what processes are using a lot of your CPU; also see what the +% idle+ figure at the very bottom is. These will, of course, "spike" up and down, but the trend should tell you fairly quickly whether processes are waiting for the CPU. If they are, then you can figure out which ones they are and why. If not, you can look at memory.

  • Spotlight is "estimating indexing time" forever.

I just got this late 2010 Macbook Pro from a friend of mine after I broke my Macbook Air. I restored from Time Machine to get all my settings and files from the Air. Since I started up the computer two days ago, it has been "estimating indexing time" on spotlight search. I use spotlight search often so I really need to know how to get it unstuck from this loop! There was a CD in the computer, but I took it out and now I don't see what could be causing the problem.
I tried using sudo mdutil -a -i off and on, It still appears to be estimating forever.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Ok so turns out it was a special case, someone did something to this Macbook at some point in its life that kind of messed up the hard drive and then spotlight could not index it. Apple Support helped me and now all is well!

  • STILL Estimating Indexing Time: Spotlight

    Hi,
Spotlight is STILL "estimating indexing time". It's been doing this for weeks!
I have 175gb worth of sound effects (which live on an external hard drive) where I'd like to search for files via the Finder or Spotlight. However this "indexing" process is literally taking forever. As it is currently, the Finder or Spotlight is not locating / finder files that are clearly on the drive.
How can I speed up the indexing process or enable to locating of the files on the external drive?
    Thanks.

I do not think it is true that TM requires Spotlight indexing of the TM (or any other) drive to work. (why should it? everything it needs to know is in the usual disk catalogues, it does not need to see/search the file contents). So you can put the TM drive on the private list in System Prefs/Spotlight and this should stop Spotlight pointlessly indexing the backup drive (which will still have the usual disk catalogues so you can examine it in the Finder or with TM).
Having said this there is a genuine problem here. My machine works fine with Spotlight and TM and even though it has not been manually excluded Spotlight does not, I believe, index the TM drive anyway, at all events it does not find all the backup near-duplicates of things on the TM drive. I think there is somewhere an invisible setting that ensures this. But on my wife's machine running the same system there was/is endless disk activity whilst Spotlight tries (apparently fruitlessly - the process seems to take forever without completing) to index the TM drive. I have tried excluding the TM drive as above but it still seem to try! One can manually kill the process using Activity Monitor but this may stop all indexing.
What I really want is direct control of the indexing process (clear include/exclude by drive, say) rather than having it hidden away somewhere - maybe Apple will provide this! I wonder whether indexing a TM drive presents problems because of all the similarly-named backup file copies....

  • Slow backup (and spotlight problems) after time machine restore

    Hi All,
After having some shaky moments with my macbook pro's internal hard drive, I have now installed a new one. I am running the latest version of 10.6.8.
The machine is running fine after a restore from my Time machine backup, but there are a few problems:
    1) Time machine is now making a new backup - it looks like it wants to do a complete backup, which is ok as I have the space. However, after about 30 mins it has completed 156k and is now running at about 1k a second (or less).
    2) Spotlight is reindexing, but appears to be stuck on "Estimating indexing time".
    3) I tried opening mail, and it said it had to convert my mailbox - it got part way through the number of messages and stopped. I force quite, I'll try that one again later.
Any ideas for 1) and 2) above? I can't see any odd looking messages in the console...
    Cheers

So... thought I'd update this since it may help someone else later...
The time machine backup completed fine in the end - it looked like it wanted to do a complete backup but I think it just did a delta in the end.
The spotlight reindex ran for about another 6 hours, judging by the console messages.
However, now I'm trying to run mail - and it's stuck on importing the mailbox - it got to 14157 of 57904 and stopped there. The "time remaining" is increasing by about 5 minutes every minute....
I've seen the following message in the console, which I also saw while it was trying to do the spotlight index last night:
    NSDataMessageStore: couldn't find body
Anyway, I'll let it run and see what happens...

  • Spotlight stuck at "estimating index time"

During normal work, Spotlight tries to build an index and remains stuck at "estimating index time". I have reviewed various threads about the problem but none solves my issue.
In my case the time machine volume is set as "do not index" in the privacy settings of Spotlight. Nothing else is there. Right in this moment no volume is connected and estimating index time remains there, at the cost of high CPU usage and fan noise.
    What can I do?

  • Time Machine prepares backups forever

I have had Time Machine set up on my MacBook Pro for over a year without any problems, and all of a sudden in December, it begins by preparing the backup as it always did, but it never goes any further. I left my laptop open for 2 days and it hadn't gotten any further than preparing the backup. When I check the Time Machine settings it confirms that the last time it backed up was the beginning of December 2010. My roommate also has a Mac (both running Leopard with the latest updates), and his Time Machine is working fine. Any thoughts on what is causing this for my MBP?

Thanks for the link. I downloaded the widget and worked through a few of the error messages listed, as well as doing a restart of Time Machine (#A4). That doesn't seem to have resolved the issue. Below is a copy and paste of the widget. I understand that it's telling me that the drive is full, but it should know to make space on its own to store newer backups.

  • Spotlight hung, displays "Estimating Indexing Time" indefinitely

After I used iPhoto Library Manager, Dup Annihilator, and Thumbnail Annihilator, I have seen Spotlight crippled with this endless "Estimating Indexing Time" message. I removed an external hard drive after seeing this message, but this didn't help. I re-installed Snow Leopard--likewise, no help. What can I do? Help Appleheads!

If the problem is indeed iPhoto, you can go to the Spotlight prefs pane, open the Privacy tab, and put the iPhoto Library into it. That will remove it from Spotlight's indexing attempts. If Spotlight is then able to finish indexing you will know for sure that the problem is iPhoto. If that turns out to be the case, follow Barry's advice and post about the problem in the iPhoto forum.

  • Spotlight endlessly estimating indexing time

I see this has been an issue with several others. I've tried a few of the suggested UNIX commands in terminal, but no luck. This morning I reinstalled Snow Leopard plus the combo update and it's still "estimating index time" Prior to the reinstall, I did use Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner to delete the indexes, but I'm thinking it still shouldn't take hours to estimate the index time regardless. Any suggestions as to what I can do at this point?

Seems to be indexing now. Hopefully this will be the end of it!

  • Time Machine - Preparing backup - It's endless

My C2D Mac Mini is hanging on Time Machine - Preparing Backup for the second time since "Upgrading" to 10.5.2
I had to re-format my backup disk last time and start all the backups again.
Here is an extract from the console log:
    29/04/2008 23:50:13 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[1094] Starting standard backup
    29/04/2008 23:50:13 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[1094] Backing up to: /Volumes/LaCie Disk/Backups.backupdb
29/04/2008 23:50:15 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[1094] Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
    29/04/2008 23:50:15 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[1094] Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|kFSEDBEventFlagReasonEventDBUntrustable|
Does anyone recognise this? I'm a Mac novice so I don't understand what it all means. I hope I don't have to reformat and start again as I was converted to Mac from PC on the advice that "A Mac Works!"
My backup drive is a 500GB Lacie Mini if that is of any relevance. Spotlight is told not to index the drive and also the Lacie drive is told not to back itself up.
Can anyone help as it's driving me nuts!

Are Lacie really that bad? I thought that the main reason they are mentioned in these forums is that Lacie are one of the only brands of external storage that apple actively promote through their own web stores so there a good chance that quite a few Mac users will buy one. Anyway I can't afford to buy another Hard Drive at the moment and the lacie works perfectly apart from Time Machine.
The problem seems to be with Mac OS the more I delve into these forums and more importantly the 10.5.2. update which is where Time Machine appears to be providing users with a lot of troubles.
The Apple support self service on the website is far from comprehensive as I guess they want you to purchase Apple Care for ongoing support after the 90 days initial period but come on apple give us a break and sort it out or provide a support email address for specific problems!

  • Mac OS X Server 10.6.7 update - Time Machine not working and other trouble.

I've upgraded my mid 2010 mac mini server to 10.6.7 with server Combo download.
After installation (without any errors) i've detected this troubleshooting.
Time Machine (backup hd is the 2nd 500GB Hd of mini server) dont work more and
display error message that suggest to verify hard disks (done with no errors detection).
    Mac Help display white page.
And if try to install Server Admin Tools, installation utility not recognize system HD and cannot be done.
The mac mini server seems however works and services seems works rights. Can be rebooted without problems.
I've tried to backup the system disk on the second hd with Carbon Copy Cloner without problem and it recognize system disk well.
I've upgraded also two others mac minis (mid 2010) with standard 10.6.7 version (no server) and a macbook and a macbook pro without problems (but i've not tried time machine on them).
Thanks in advance for any help!

I know the problems with Time Machine on Mac OS server. In your case: Look at the log files, searching for "backupd", if that tells you anything.
In my case, Time Machine in the last year stopped several times. Occasionally, there was a helpful message in the log files where I could identify a file where it had hung -- typically intermediate build results of Xcode. After excluding or deleting the offending files (where possible), Time Machine ran successfully.
Another situation which has repeatedly occurred is that time machine just hangs and does not progress, and no log entry helps. In 3 such cases what helped was to delete the spotlight index (e.g., with TinkerTool System) and let it rebuild. It took inordinately long (10 hrs) and there were log entries by mdworker that it had difficulty processing files. But when the spotlight index was finally rebuilt, Time Machine worked again.
BTW: I don't need Time Machine to backup the server system, for that I run mirrors etc., but for user files it is most convenient and has helped several times. Thus I have excluded nearly everything but /User/*.
