Time machine questions.  Please help

So,  I'm getting rid of my laptop and switching.    I've had my time machine external HD plugged into my airport extreme doing backups.   Well,  I just plugged it into the laptop directly and hit backup
So is it really just as simple as plugging the HD into the next computer and hitting "restore"    Is there any extra steps?   Will it come back just like this one is set up?
I'm nervous that I accidently deleted an older backup in time machine through the finder to make space for the new back up.   I hope that doesnt mess anything up.    This backup is only like 90 mb.    IS that cause it took previous ones so its only adding the new data since the last backup an hour ago?
I want to not include my movies that are in iTunes,    They eat up about 60 gb of space and my new computer HD will be smaller.   Is tehre a way to do that?  I currently have the movies themselves copied onto the external.    But cant seem to get them out of my iTunes library.    Couple of questions regarding that..
    1.  Is this a good idea
     2.  Is that the best way to do it
3,  will doing that mess with my backup at all?
     4.  How do I get them out of my itunes library to shrink the overall backup?
If my backup IS larger than my new HD,  can I pick and choose what I want to put into it or not?  Or will it give me message saying the backup is too large?
I know this was a lot of questions.  But if anyone could please help I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for reading.
----Confused and nervous

In order to do a TM restore, that means erasing the hard drive and restoring from a TM backup which will put everything back the way it was before, including the operating system. However, since you're getting another computer, don't go that route. I would only use that when restoring to the same computer.
You said you deleted backups via the Finder. Wrong move. You may have damaged your TM backup. Always better to delete from within TM.
If you're switching to a new computer and you don't need backups from different times, I would erase that external and create a new backup, or clone your hard drive using Super Duper or Carbon Copy cloner.
With the new computer, when you first log in, you will be asked if you want to migrate your data. This is the Setup Assistant. You should have your backup drive plugged in and imediately migrate your user account from the backup drive. You can also migrate applications (any apps installed by you), or just reinstall them after if you want a clean installation. You should have the option to unselect any data from your user folder that you don't want to migrate.

  • Time Machine question--please help!

I bought an external hard drive. Western Digital MY BOOK. I got it set up appropriately & formatted correctly. The thing I can't figure out is how I mirror (copy) what I have on my IMAC to the external hard drive. I basically want to copy everything onto the time machine (external hard drive).
How do I go about doing this?

Connect your backup drive then open Time Machine preferences. Click on the Set Disk button and select your backup drive and click on the Use Disk button. Click on the Options button and locate whatever you wish to EXCLUDE from your backup, if anything, then click on the Save button. Now click on the large Slide Switch ON/OFF gadget to enable Time Machine. That's all there is to it.
I recommend that prior to this you open Energy Saver preferences and set the Computer Sleep slider to Never. Uncheck the option to put the disks to sleep when possible.

  • Time Machine Problems - Please Help!

I am fairly new to the world of Mac's, purchasing my first in late November 2010 and i have recently been investigating Apples own Time Machine software as a means of backing up my Mac. I had an Iomega 1TB Home Media Network drive which i had connected via ethernet to my router and my Mac was on wireless. When Time Machine saw the network drive it refused to back up to it and then occasionally it didn't see it at all. I then decided to use this drive just for the Windows PCs in my household and not for my Mac as i thought it may not be backing up because i have Mac backups and Windows backups on the same drive without partitioning. I have now got a Freecom Classic 3.5" 500GB hard drive connected directly to the USB in my Mac and Time Machine sees it and begins the backup. I get so far and then i receive the error "The backup was not performed because and error occurred while copying files to the backup disk" - i have installed the Time Machine buddy widget from Apple and have looked into it, this is what i get:

I have tried everything and looked through the forums finding people with similar problems - i have tried Verifying my Internal HD, Repairing my External HD and have tried running Tech Tool Deluxe - all of which cannot find any problems. I have also tried excluding this file but Time Machine just finds the same error with the next file in alphabetical order in the folder - i should also add it is not just the folder Applications. Can someone please tell me if i am doing something wrong as this is always a possibility with my inexperience with Macs.
Thanks for your help and sorry it's a little long winded.

Time Machine can back up to some NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices, if they meet Apple's criteria. But there are some downsides; see the pink box in #2 of [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
But yes, even if it supports Time Machine, backing-up both Windoze and OSX to the same partition is unlikely to work.
You'll have to check with Iomega about that.
Error parsing SystemMigration.log to determine source volume of system migration.
That's not really a problem; it just means Time Machine isn't sure whether you "migrated" your data from a different Mac.
    Error: (-36) SrcErr:NO Copying /Applications/AlpineCrawler.app/Contents/Resources/aahh_02.aif to /Volumes/Macbook Pro Backup 1/Backups.backupdb/Macbook Pro/2011-04-12-190436.inProgress/A63BA24E-781B-4368-B837-3A4DCA67834D/Macintosh HD/Applications/AlpineCrawler.app/Contents/Resources
I have also tried excluding this file but Time Machine just finds the same error with the next file in alphabetical order in the folder - i should also add it is not just the folder Applications.
That's the kind of thing we see when there's a problem with a file or the destination; often a bad connection. But if it's happening on every file, obviously it's something much more serious.
Is the external HD formatted properly? See #C1 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Time Machine Recovery - PLEASE HELP

I searched to find something close enought to solve my problem but was unable so I aplogize if this has occured before.
Last night I backed up my hard drive in preperation to erase my computer in order to partition it for boot camp and was running 10.6.xx. When trying to then recover my time machine data, it kept failing to boot afterwards and kept showing the grey screen with the power logo. The only system disk I have with me here (Iraq) is the one that came with my computer which is 10.5.xx.My 10.6 disk is at home and I have no way to get it here. I would have it mailed, but I won't get it before I demobolize.
So, what I need to know is of anyways to recover a Time Machine backup that is 10.6 with a 10.5 system disk.
Please e-mail any questions or answers to [email protected]

No, sorry, you must have a Snow Leopard disc (a borrowed disc will work, and not violate the license, but a Leopard disc just won't work).

  • Time Machine Problem, Please Help.

Hi, I have a new MacBook Air and TM just doesn't work. I keep getting the "backup volume cannot be found" error message. I've trashed the preference file in Library, quit TM, restart again, and repaired permission to no avail. I have also reinstalled the OS and the same problem persists. I've tried on 3 external drives (Time Capsule wirelessly, WD MyBook connected via USB and a Lacie portable drive connected via USB) and TM fails to backup every time. I've searched this board and other Mac fora and found no solution to my specific problem. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi there,
Today I installed a little program to convert flac audio files to mp3. When I ran the program the computer froze, so I rebooted but then I could move the cursor but not click on any menus or icons on the desktop, they just wouldnt respond - so basically I couldnt use the computer. After re-booting a few times with the same result I decided to reinstall the system using time machine from an external hard drive. I reinstalled OSX, then reinstalled Snow Leopard, then reinstalled the system from a previous save from Time Machine.
how exactly did you reinstall the system from TM? please give details. the correct way to do it is to boot from the snow leopard DVD and use the "restore system from backup" utility in the Utilities menu. there is no need to reinstall anything prior to using that utility. the restore utility wipes your hard drive and restores it to the state it was in at the backup time.
It said the installation was successful, but when the computer restarted a message comes up saying "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again". Ive done this about 5 times now but it always just says the same message without starting properly. WHAT DO I DO???? I really need to use my computer tomorrow so any help is hugely appreciated!!! TIA
PS. i have done a hardware test in "loop mode" and it says everything is fine

  • Time Machine Error - please help!

My dad has been having trouble with his Time Machine backups. I'm trying to trouble shoot, but can't seem to solve the issue. Whenever we run a backup we get the message: "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume" It happens fairly quick after we run a TM backup. Here's what we've done:
    1. Repaired permissions on the internal drive (several times)
    2. Started a brand new TM set-up and back up.
    3. Erased and reformatted the external TM drive
    4. Tried an entirely different external drive as the TM drive
    5. Trashed the/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file and restarted
    6. Downloaded the Time Machine Buddy widget to see if that reveals anything. Here's the error message:

    NOT SURE WHAT TO DO?
    Please help......!!

    Hi Pondini -
thanks for the reply. Your troubleshooting User Tips was what I was referring to all along. I've seemed to have resolve the issue, however, by means of a far simpler solution. I noticed just recently that although the external TM hard drive seemed to have no apparent issues when verified and repaired with Disk Utility, it did hang up and produce some Error messages when simply trying to copy large files manually over with the Finder (not using TM). This caused me to think that maybe it was not TM, but rather something wrong with the data being copied (corrupt files) or the actual drive enclosure. It wasn't the actual hard drive inside, as I had earlier swapped the original drive in the enclosure with a drive that I knew was OK and the problem still occurred. I then noticed that the drive enclosure was connected to the computer via a Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 adapter cable (the enclosure has only FW800 port and the older imac has only FW400 ports - my dad had purchased that specialty cable). When I had earlier swapped drives to check the actual drive, I kept the same cable connection. I now tried reconnecting the drive with a simple USB cable - and wallah! - all my Finder copying worked and Time Machine copying seems to be going fine. SO it seems that the actual FW cable connection was causing issues???? TM is still chugging away at the moment (first copy - large amount of data), but seems to be doing fine. Is there anyway I could have gotten a clue that the problem was something so simple as a bad cable. Is FW more buggy than USB. Maybe those that adapter cables are buggy. I've always preferred FW as I thought it was the faster more reliable method of external HD connection - but maybe USB is a better choice. Obviously here it is. Thanks for the help.

  • My apps didn't restore from time machine. Please help!!

I had to restore my iMac from time machine. The apps didn't install. What'd I do wrong please help!!

Were your applications excluded from your backup? How exactly did you restore from your backup? Did you do it using Migration Assistant?

  • I had two computers backing up on my time capsule, with time machine. Main computer with ethernet cable and laptop... airport. My iMac hard disc failed and I can't find the back up on time machine. Please help!

I open time machine preferences and only see the backup for the laptop. Have no idea what to do at this point. The time machine was backing up my iMac just fine until it stopped working.

But no prohibited signs, like these:

I did navigate back several days prior to my Mac dying. Still nothing.
Sounds like it may have been excluded, or perhaps damaged.
Just for future reference, it's always a good idea to keep "secondary" backups.  See #27 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for some suggestions.

  • Time machine question please. (Mavericks)

When TM begins a backup (not the initial but a normal everyday backup; when you get the initial progress bar, I believe I understand correctly that TM is reading the hard drive for changes since the last backup.
My question concerns the changeover on the progress bar when TM begins the actual backup for what it has found changed. The numbers change at the instant the backup begins to what I believe is the total amount of what TM has found and is backing up.
Now as the backup continues the progress bar of course shows the backup progress and the number amount of the backup decreases as I watch.
What happens is that whatever the total is showing for the backup being done, the backup ALWAYS ends somewhere short of that amount. For example I could be showing a 2GB backup in progress, but the progress ends and the backup shows complete at say 1.2GB.
I'd really like to understand what is actually happening here. The backups seem normal when I check TM on the "My Passport" that I'm using. But WHY doesn't the backup progress on my backups continue on to the actual amount showing as the total backup being transfered to the drive?
Many thanks if someone can help me understand this process a bit better.

2013 Macbook Air, Mavericks all updates current. TM drive is a 500GBWD My Passport. All hardware checked and ok. Plenty of room on the external drive and all systems are normal.

Ah so !! "Estimated" is the word of the day and seems to solve everything.
So all IS normal, and there is once again peace in the valley.
Thank you very much for your time and expertise. I really appreciate these forums.

I logged 3 times wrong security question. please help me

    Hey annamyle91,
Thanks for the question. If you are having issues with the security questions associated with your Apple ID, follow these steps:
If you forgot the answers to your Apple ID security questions
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6170
    Reset your security questions
    1. Go to My Apple ID (appleid.apple.com).
    2. Select “Manage your Apple ID” and sign in.
    3. Select “Password and Security” on the left side of the page.
    4. If you have only one security question, you can change the question and answer now.
    5. If you have more than one security question:
              - Select “Send reset security info email to [your rescue email address].” If you don't see this link or don't have access to your rescue address, contact Apple Support as described in the next section.
              - Your rescue address will receive a reset email from Apple. Follow its instructions to reset your security questions and set up new questions and answers.Didn't receive the email?
After resetting your security questions, consider turning on two-step verification. With two-step verification, you don't need security questions to secure your account or verify your identity.
If you can't reset your security questions
Contact Apple Support in either of these circumstances:
              - You don't see the link to send a reset email, which means you don't have arescue address.
              - You see the link to send a reset email, but you don't have access to email at the rescue address.
A temporary support PIN isn't usually required, but Apple may ask you to generate a PIN if your identity needs to be verified.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

Hello, my mail is gone and I can't find it anywhere. Its not in library and I have not configured Time Machine yet. Help please?!

Use Find Any File, if the old messages might have been in a specific mailbox, to look for a file by the name of the mailbox to see if there are any larger versions of that mailbox.
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
If your Mail is indeed gone, you may be able to recover it with one of the data recovery tools here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
But act quickly.  Every action while the computer is turned on weakens its chances of recovery.  There is a slim chance also your email provider may have tape backup from before you checked your messages and after it arrived at their server for certain messages.  You may want to ask them if that might have happened.

  • HT201363 Hello, I have my pass word, I have my Apple ID, but itunes think I am buying a song for the first time and is asking me 2 security questions, please help, what should i do?

I cannot remember the answeres to my security questions, please help.

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; this can be done by phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, or clicking here and picking a method, or if your country isn't listed in either article, filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • I recently changed from a Mac Pro to an iMac. A large chunk of emails have disappeared. Time Machine is no help. Any ideas as to how I can get them back?

I recently changed from a Mac Pro to an iMac. Despite using Migration Assistant, a large chunk of my recent emails and nearly all of my wife's emails have disappeared in transit. Strangely, emails from my distant past are still there. Time Machine is no help; the messages may be on my backup disc but they're behind an invisible  icon. Any ideas as to how I can get them back?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

Nobody can tell you anything without proper system info or other technical details. The standard answer with all text issues simply is, that you have a "bad font" on your system and need to get rid of it.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
If you are unable to remember your password, security questions, don’t have access to your rescue address or are unable to reset your password for whatever reason, your only option is to contact AppleCare, upon speaking to an operator you should explain that your problem is related to your Apple ID, this way you will not be charged for assistance, even if you don’t have an AppleCare plan.
The operator will take you through some steps you may have already tried, however they need to be sure they have exhausted all usual approaches before trying to reset your account, so you should try to be helpful and show patience with the procedure.
The operator will need to verify they are speaking to the account holder and may ask you some questions that only the account holder could know, and you will need to answer them if the process is to proceed.
Once the operator has verified your identity they will send a message through to your device which contains an alpha numeric code, which you will need to read back to them.
Once this has been completed they will send an email to your iCloud email address after a period of 24 hours, so you should check that mail is enabled in your devices iCloud settings.
Upon receipt of the email, use the reset link provided to reset your password, after which you should be able to make the adjustments to iCloud that you wish to do.
