Time machine reconnect

I inadvertently disconnected my Time Machine back up and now when I reconnect system wants me to delet the exiting backups ( which it can see). Is it possible to reconnect so the Time machine resumes where it left of.
If not, is it possible to save it and access it as well as the new one I create?

Time Machine reconnect old sparsebundle

I encountered a problem with a corrupt sparsebundle (I use TimeMachine with my Synology NAS) and Time Machine creating a new sparsebundle, not using the my good old sparsebundle with all my previous backups.
Maybe there are people with the same problem, so here is my solution.
First I had to repair my original sparsebundle image (in this post, the filename is further called A ). TimeMachine seems to rename this sparsebundle giving it read-only rights. To bypass that: ssh with Terminal to your NAS and navigate to the folder which you pointed out as backup folder for Synology Mac Backup.
type:
+chmod 1777 A+
End your SSH session with the NAS, but keep Terminal open. Open 'Finder' and navigate to the backupfolder on your NAS (so the folder is mounted). Then, go back to Terminal and go to /Volumes/*backup folder*/. If you type ' +ls -ls+ ' in your Terminal, the sparsebundle will be shown.
Then to mount and repair, type:
+hdiutil attach -nomount -readwrite A+
then a list with disks appear as output. Remember the bottom one (with me /dev/disk1s2).
type:
+fsck_hfs -rf remembered_path+
This can take a while (like 12 hours or so, depending on the size of your sparsebundle).
Sometimes this process quits with an error (with me it did), but restarting the process worked for me (so just type in the command again).
Then, manually start a Time Machine Backup (letting it create a new sparsebundle). Wait until the 'Making backup disk available' disappears and stop the backup. Disable TimeMachine again.
Go to Terminal again and ssh to your NAS.
Go to the folder again with the sparsebundles.
Type ' +ls -ls+ ', remember the name of the sparsebundle created last, i call this X.
type:
+cd X+
type:
+cp Info.plist ../A+
+cp Info.bckup ../A+
+cp com.apple.TimeMachine.MachineID.plist ../A+
+cd ..+
+mv X choosea_filename_not_ending_withsparsebundle+
+mv A to X+
If you point Time Machine to use the NAS disk again, the backup process will go and continue to backup to your good 'ol sparsebundle.
For me it worked, hope it does for others!!

Of course, I could prove this fix by restoring from Time Machine, but I'm not going into that now, maybe I will test that later on.
That would be prudent. But restore to an empty disk/partition, so if it fails, you're not in a bigger pickle. You might try it twice; once from the last backup before the message, once from a later one.

I would recommend setting the wireless encryption on the AirPort Express BEFORE configuring it for the AirPort Extreme in this case. This issue also comes up often when configuring AirPorts into a WDS.
If setting up security in my recommend order does not work, temporarily connect the Express by Ethernet to the Extreme; make the security changes, and then, move the Express back to the desired location.

Can't reconnect to Time Machine backups after upgrade to Yosemite

I did a clean install of Yosemite and restored the user accounts from my time machine backup. I reconnected to the time machine backup on my time capsule and performed a backup. That went fine.
Now I can't access any of the backups made before I upgraded to Yosemite. They all show up in the history bar on the right in time machine but when I click on a backup nothing loads. I've run a verify on the backup and it passes. Looking at the backup file it has 400GB of data, the same as before the upgrade to Yosemite.
Any ideas why I can't access the backups?

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
If you need to restore from a backup of the hidden user Library folder, first select a snapshot, then press shift-command-G. A Go to Folder dialog will open. In it, you'll enter the path to the folder. The dialog will help you by automatically completing the parts of the path when you start to type them.
The path begins with slash character ("/"). Enter that. The rest of the parts will be separated by slashes.
The next part is the date and time of the current snapshot. Enter a "2", and the rest of the date should be filled in automatically. Press the right-arrow key to jump to the end of the path. Enter a slash to start the next part.
Next is the name of the volume (usually "Macintosh HD" unless you gave it a different name.) Start to type that, then jump to the end and enter a slash.
The next part is "Users", followed by a slash.
Next is your (short) user name, which is also the name of your home folder.
Finally, enter "Library", then press return. You should now be in the Library folder. From there you can get around as in the Finder.

Time Machine is not a good way to do that, when it eventually needs more room it deletes old Backups to make room.
If you really want to keep Files but remove them from the Internal Drive, then I'd get another external drive to copy or clone them to that is not used for TM.

My Time Machine does not recognize my newly-reconnected external hard drive, so I cant set it up

I have unplugged and restarted the external drive and the notebook itself multiple times. And done some troubleshooting. The drive is simply NOT recognized by the notebook (macBook 2007). It was however working fine until last night when I dismantled the whole system (to clear the table top for a party).
Now setting up again my NEW (bought 2 weeks ago) LaCie (2 TB USB-connected external drive) neither the Time Machine NOR the Mac itself recognizes the external drive, so I can't select it when I'm asked to configure the Time Machine.....
What is going on here. The disc is far from full and I've shut down and rebooted everything. Disconnected and reconnected everything (drive from Mac too) Trouble shooting included finding the preferences in Library and deleting the old com.apple plist file which I've copied below (could not attach it here)

I'm trying to reconnect my Time Machine backup. When I select my Time Machine I'm getting an error message "The disk image "kimby's iMac.sparesebundle" is in use. Try ejecting the disk image. How would I do this?
I have no clue what they are talking about.
Any ideas / help would be great.

The problem is, backups are stored differently when done over a network. See the blue box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17 for an explanation.
Connect the drive to your Mac, open it via the Finder, and delete the <your computer name>.sparsebundle there.
Then you should be able to continue backing-up to the drive directly.

I use an external 500 GB WD hard drive for my Time-Machine backup.
Sometimes - several times - after i've disconnected the drive to go travelling, when i reconnect the external drive, Time Machine tries to resume but tells me there is not enough space on the drive, and to chose a bigger disk.
It is as if the previous backup file is "closed' and cannot be written to again.
The only fix i can find is to erase, start again from scratch and do a full backup from scratch - which totally defeats the purpose of Time Machine.
I've tried repairing the disk, nothing appears to allow the previous backup to be continued.
Suggestions please ??

Currently, having once again yesterday flattened and restarted my T-M from scratch i probably overwrote all the backups since the last time i had to do that - and as long as i don't disconnect my external backup drive it seems OK now.
I'm a bit paranoid as i use my MBP both as my Mac, but also as my Virtual PC so i have a lot of technical and commercial data which i need to keep properly backed up.
Is it possible when i've ejected my TM backup disck, gone travelling, and then reconnected it some days later - that i am causing a new backup to start by hitting the 'Backup Now' command on the menu bar.... should i let TM pickup by itself automaticvally without porvoking a Backup Now command ?

"Reconnecting" Time Machine Backups on New Macbook Pro

I recently got a new macbook pro and used Time Machine to set it up. Unfortunately, when I attempt to continue to use time machine backups, I get the warning that I don't have enough space.
I next attempted to use the Pondini B6 troubleshoot to reconnect my backups via the terminal (http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html), however upon attempting to execute the "sudo tmutil inheritbackup" command I received the following error message:
The backup "I***Mac" can't be inherited because it would conflict with "I***’s MacBook Pro" (with I***Mac being the name of my old laptop and I***'s MacBook Pro being my new one).
Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I just wipe my backup HD?

After this:
sudo tmutil delete "/Volumes/Time Machine/Backups.backupdb/Computername 2/"
sudo tmutil associatedisk -a /Volumes/Mac\ HD /Volumes/Time\ Machine/Backups.backupdb/Computername/Latest/Mac\ HD
I was able to go into Time Machine and see the backups that were in Computername that I hadn't been able to see via Time Machine (but could see from the command line).
And then I deleted a folder in TIme Machine (a profile inside ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox and the entire old backup in /Volumes/Time\ Machine/Backups.backupdb/Computername/ was deleted. Perhaps fat fingers? I dunno. I have a volume copy of the Time Machine volume, so I'll try again...

If you want to back up to the old drive, just select that drive via +Time Machine Preferences > Select Disk.+

Time Machine Disk Icon not Displaying Properly After Reconnect

I'm noticing a little oddity that has been happening since I upgraded to Mavericks. If I disconnect my Time Machine (TM) volume, then, reconnect it later and perform a backup, the disk icon on my desktop isn't changing to the green TM icon, it's still displaying as the orange Firewire icon. I can correct this by opening the TM preferences, clicking "select disk" and, then, reselecting my TM volume. The icon will, then, change and it will remain correct as long as the volume is connected. Normally, the icon should change automatically when the first backup is initiated.
Anyone else seen this and know why this might be happening? I'm wondering if there might be something screwy with my TM preferences. As a next step, I might try resetting TM (i.e. trashing the .plist file) and see if that fixes the behavior.
This isn't affecting TM functionality at all. TM is still working perfectly. This is, at best, an annoyance.

I suspect Apple took this funcionality out of Mavericks for some reason. I'm running several Macs at our business, and they all are doing the same thing.

Can I reconnect Time Machine backup after drive swap on OS X 10.6?

I swapped my MacMini's HD few days ago (previous one was dying, had hardware issues). I used CCC and replaced with a hybrid drive. So far, so good. However, when I plugged back the external USB drive were I keep my Time Machine backups, it is not being recognized, TM wants to run a new full set.
I did some research and discovered that TM may use the HD or machine's UUID and that's why it's triggering the new FULL.
I also found this article by Pondini (which seems to be a guru on the topic, lol ):

But attrb is not working, I guess such command it's not available on 10.6.8 ? ...
How can I reconnect Time Machine backups to the new HD? Or ... I simply cannot and I will have to delete and run a FULL set? I would prefer to keep my old backups, if possible, but it seems that with my OSX version that's not possible without workarounds.

The trick did not work :-(
I entered into TM and while I can see the old backups , I can't select them or do anything with them. Clearly, they have not been identified as previous backups, hence the reason for Today's FULL.

Depending on what version of OSX you're running, and how the data was transferred, you may be out of luck.
If you're running Lion, and your backups were made to a directly-connected external HD (ie, not a Time Capsule or other network location), you may be able to get Time Machine to "associate" the new disk with the old backups. See #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, especially the pink box there.
If you're running Snow Leopard, you might be able to do a full system restore of your backups to the new HD. See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14 for detailed instructions. That should leave a "trail" that Time Machine can follow to "associate" the new drive with the old backups. Unfortunately, that doesn't always work, and there's no way to do it manually, as there is with Lion.

"Reconnect" Time Machine?

I have Time Machine backing up to a 500GB external HD. It's been faithfully backing up with no problems. A couple weeks ago the screen on my MBP died and I had to take it to the Apple Store to be fixed. I got it back today, and after setting everything up, I noticed that Time Machine hadn't backed up because it said the backup volume couldn't be located. The drive I use was connected, and mounted on the desktop, and it was listed in the TM preferences. I clicked on "change disk", re-selected it, and this time TM found it just fine, but the problem is, it's trying to create another set up backups on the HD instead of using the existing folder of backups that it's been using for months. The original set of backups were in a folder called "MacBook Pro", and now it's trying to create a new folder called "MacBook Pro 2". Is there any way to "reconnect" to the original folder that's already in place?

Time Machine was working perfectly on my iMac until I had to take it in to replace the video card. When the computer was repaired a week later, I reconnected my external hard drive and clicked on "Back Up Now" under the Time Machine icon in the menu bar. A "Time Machine Error" message came up informing me that "This backup is too large for the backup volume." More than half the hard drive is still available (38.3 GB), but Time Machine demands 40.9 GB, which is more than my original backup with Time Machine months ago. So it seems Time Machine wants to start over with a new backup of my entire system. Can I tell it to resume where it left off? Or do I have to buy another hard drive and start all over again?
