Time Machine refers to a non-existing Sparsebundle

Hi there,
I had set-up my Time Capsule and TM-back-up had been running for a couple weeks.
However, out of the blue my complete TM-back-up/sparsebundle disappeared (really, completely gone :-() and had to be redone from scratch.
I tried to simply start a complete new sparsebundle. Through the Finder I deleted all files and folders (including hidden ones), i.e. TC-drive has been completely empty. Nevertheless the Time Machine still refers to the old Sparsebundle which is not on the TC-drive anymore.
How can I remove this dead-end-link inside TM now?
I already removed the TC-volume in TM and re-selected it then again.
However, after reselecting the TC-drive it still refers to "a started but not finished" sparsebundle which as mentioned does not exist on the TC-drive.
TIA!

I did not physically remove the drive of the TC. Actually I am using the Disk Utility Program inside Yosemite.
Though, I have to admit that this is a bloody lengthy process.  To partition and format the first 500GB took 48hrs !!!!
My issue, is that I would like to find a way to utilize these partitions as is and get rid of the dead-end reference Time Machine is using yet (despite the removed  and renamed sparse bundle.)
Alternatively, how could I reset the drive to the original state with correct partition table (1x 3TB) and format "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" ?
Is there any quick way, cause spending days is not really an option.

This is asked at least 5-6 times a day here.
Look at the right hand column.. more like this.
It is a bug in Mountain Lion.
    Read C12 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
But the fast solution.. unplug the TC.. count to 10.. plug it back in.

  • I restored a Macbook Pro from a Time Machine backup and now none of my passwords are working (and I know they are the correct passwords).  What can I do?

I restored a Macbook Pro from a Time Machine backup and now none of my passwords are working (and I know they are the correct passwords).  What can I do?

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
Another reason why the password might not be recognized is that the keyboard layout (input source) has been switched without your realizing it. You can select one of the available layouts by choosing from the flag menu in the upper right corner, if it's showing, or cycle through them by pressing the key combination command-space or command-option-space. See also this support article.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password. In OS X 10.10 and later, this option also works with FileVault, but only if you enabled it when you activated FileVault. It's not retroactive. Otherwise, see below.
Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead these instructions.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities window appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar at the top of the screen—not from any of the items in the OS X Utilities window.
In the window that opens, type this:
    resetp
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens. Close the Terminal window to get it out of the way.
Select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected. You won't be able to do this if FileVault is active.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but the Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as the login password), there's no way to recover it.

  • Time machine not automatically backing up to sparsebundle

    Used TimeTamer to create sparsebundle.
    Manual backups work fine.
Receive message that "time machine destination not resolvable" when automatic backups are tried.
    Is this issue correctable?
    Thank you

I am backing up to a 1st generation Drobo.
All I know about Drobos is what I read on their site and some threads here.
How is it connected?  Network (Ethernet or WIFI) or direct (USB, Firewire, eSATA)?
The reason for doing so is to limit the amount of space my Time Machine backups will take up.
Depending on how you're connected, there may be a better way.  Are you still running 10.6.8?  Note that on some models, Drobo says not to use that with Leopard or Snow Leopard (http://support.drobo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/610/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xMzI 2NzcyMDg3L3NpZC9NZFN1TWtPaw%3D%3D).
According to this page: http://support.drobo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/609/~/how-do-i-make-time-machin e-work-with-drobo%3F, some models of Drobo allow you to create partitions.  If yours will, that's the way to go.
Then let Time Machine create a Backups.backupdb folder at the top level of the volume if you're connected directly, or it's own sparse bundle if you're connected via network.
If not, and if you're connected via network, you may be able to let Time Machine create the sparse bundle, then limit the maximum size via #A8 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
    hdiutil create -size 8192g -fs HFS+J  -volname "TM-backup-of-****-*****-mac-pro" /Volumes/Drobo/****-*****-mac-pro_001f5b32e8e4.sparsebundle
Some possible problems with that (I can't tell since you substituted ***s):
Check the names (of all odd things) of your Mac, network, and Drobo per #C9 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  The names may be a problem even if you let Time Machine create the sparse bundle.
As I read the man page for hdiutil, that command will not create a sparse bundle disk image with a maximum size of 8 TB; it will create a fixed-size disk image of 8 TB.
Since 10.6.0, Time Machine no longer includes the source Mac's MAC address in the name of the sparse bundle.  I don't know if having it there is a problem in your setup.
Have you used any other 3rd-party apps (such as Time Machine Editor, or Time Machine Scheduler) to alter Time Machine's default behavior?

  • Time Machine is Corrupting my External Drives, Sparsebundle on NAS

Started as my timemachine drive getting flagged as locked and read only 6 months ago.  Read up on this problem and no great solution so I buy a new drive so I can fix later without deleting my backups.  I tried repairing but it can't be repaired by disk utility.  Tried logging in as root and clearing all the permissions, flags and acl's etc, always tells me some type of error why it can't do that.  Can open the drive and view the files in time machine.  Can open and view files in finder/terminal.  Can't copy them off the drive in the directory structure that is there, always says there is some reason it can't do it.
New drive was a NAS approved for time machine use, worked great for a month.  First verification thing ran today, and of course Time Machine found a problem and the only solution is for it to delete the whole sparse bundle and start over.  Great, because 3 days ago my MBP started locking up, hard reboots, had to repair from CD boot multiple times, still getting beach ball of death and random lockups even though activity monitor says everything is good.  Strongly suspect harddrive is going south despite testing out ok.
So right now I bought yet another external drive and am running a new time machine backup as I can't access the last 4 years of time machine backups I have.  If I get this running again I'm returning to my previous 10 years of superduper imaging that were rock solid.
Any tips on getting data out of time machine more efficiently once it has locked the drive down so badly?  Any reason why in root I still can't overcome the flags on the drive?
Haven't tried much with the sparsebundle yet as I'm worried the drive will fail any moment.

New drive was a NAS approved for time machine use
    Not by Apple.
Backing up to a third-party NAS with Time Machine is risky, and unacceptably risky if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want, and I also know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS for backup, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.)

  • Time machine error - backup fails due to sparsebundle already in use

Since upgrading, Time machine reports backup error:
    TIme Machine Error
The backup disk image ...sparsebundle is already in use.
    Any thoughts?

Thanks russ. After the initial upgrade to Mt Lion, no backups have been made. Every attempt reports the sparsebundle error. I recently updated to 10.8.1 and a whole new set of problems have shown up which is having me question the wisdom of continuing to invest in Apple product.
I have decided to pack it in with regard to the timecapsule product, as it is just too unreliable, and certainly not worth the continued time and effort it has been taking to try and get it to work. I have instead gone with an online backup service, Crashplan. I have the backup service I am seeing and I am no longer frittering away valuable time on something that ought to just work.
    Problem solved.

  • Unable to prevent Time Machine backing up volume mounted from sparsebundle

I have a password-protected sparsebundle that contains my financial files, private data, etc, which I mount as a volume at startup. It's about 8GB. If I'm going to be away from my computer for a bit, I'll unmount the volume as an extra security measure.
I don't need or want Time Machine to back up the files INSIDE the volume, just the sparsebundle itself. If I needed to access a backup of a file inside the volume, I'd rather just pull up an earlier version of the sparsebundle, mount it, and find the file in there.
However, I've recently discovered that I can't exclude the mounted volume from Time Machine backups in the usual way - the volume name is greyed out when I go through the System Preferences/Time Machine pane, and won't let me select it to be excluded from backup.
So what's happening is that TM is backing up the contents of the volume, which is showing up as folders on the TM backup drive. Inside these folders is the complete listing (and actual data) of all the files in my secured volume!
Even if I UNmount the volume from my system, it's still possible to access the data via Time Machine.app (and via Finder, on the TM backup disk).
So, essentially, even though I've password protected the sparsebundle CONTAINING the data, all a person needs to get the data is to have access to my user account on my Mac, and they can get the data via the above methods.
Is there any way to allow TM to back up the sparsebundle itself, but not the listing of the contents (and data) of the mounted image?
It seems odd that I can exclude the volume contents from being indexed by Spotlight, but can't exclude them from being specifically backed up by Time Machine.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

I have exactly the same issue. I cannot exclude the content of mounted disk images from my backup using the GUI (strangely on my other computer the content is not backuped).
I have manually edited with a text editor the preference file (Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist) today (I am using 10.6.3) and added in the SkipPaths section the mounting point of the disk image (typically /Volumes/NameofDisk ). So far so good. The corresponding folder appears in the backup but is empty.
    Use at your own risk

  • Time machine not working says MacBook Pro.sparsebundle in use

TIme machine has'nt backed up for over a year. Don't know why it was brougt to my attention by my laptop today. I've tried to restart it ,but it says that the "disk is already in use" or "Heidi’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" in use or" try to eject disk image" which I have no clue how to do.  Any suggestions?

Did you try to restart the Time Capsule?
Pull the power cord from the back ot the Time Capsule
    Wait a few seconds
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes and try a backup. If that does not do it, then look here for more information:
The Backup disk image ... sparsebundle ... is already in use.

  • Time machine is not recognizing my existing sparse bundle

On my MB Pro with OS 10.8 I have been making backups for two weeks to a new Time Capsule 3TB. Time Machine (and my Mac) lost the ability to connect to the drive called Data on the TC. In Airport Utility everything looked fine. After some messing around (restart TC, reboot Mac, remove the Data drive in TM Preferences and then select it again as the backup disk) I find myself with Time Machine connecting to the Time Capsule, but trying to create a new backup from scratch. It appears not to be recognizing the old Sparse Bundle. Is there anything I can do to get TM to recognize the old Sparse Bundle?

Does it just show "None" for the backup dates, or does it actually show it's going to back up a huge amount of data?
The "None" is very misleading -- it just means the preferences window hasn't been updated (and won't be until the next backup is finished).
Did you change the setting for Secure Shared Disks (on the Disks panel of Airport Utility) to or from With Accounts"?  If so, that will cause a new backup, as they're stored differently.
Log on to an Admin account. Via the Finder, see if there are two sparse bundles, something like this (in Column View):

  • Time Machine could not complete the backup (sparsebundle error)

    I'm getting the error:
Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk image "/Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Myusername's computer.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).
What has happened it's been backing up since November 21st with no issue? Can I recover from this error?

The backups may be damaged. Try Repairing them, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
What is the destination for your backups?

  • Warning:  Don't use Time Machine to backup disk containing existing TM backup files

I ran into a problem while starting a clean TM backup on a new hard drive.  I found the solution on this board and wanted to do a clean post of it in case it might help someone else.
A few months ago, I had got a new external to put my Aperture referenced masters on.  When I first hooked up the drive, IIRC, I got a message from Time Machine asking me if I wanted to use that drive as a TM backup drive.  I didn't have a proper backup plan in place so I said "Sure why not" and never thought any more about it.  So that drive contained the TM backups as well as a lot of Aperture files.
Fast forward to now when I decide to do a proper backup plan including a new drive just for TM.  So last night, I hook up this new drive and tell TM to use it to backup my iMac as well as that previous external.  But I specify in the preferences that I want to exclude the old Backups.backupdb folder of course.  Great.  I go to bed expecting to find everything backed up the next morning.
Uhhhh... not!  This morning, the TM preference window is still spinning on "Excluding items" and it is currently at 35 millions!  (That millions with an "m").  ???  So I did a search on this board and found this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2520870?start=15&tstart=0
in which another user had a similar problem and, after fishing around a bit, Pondini discovered that this old Backups.backupdb folder was the source of the problem.
So I stopped TM, and this time I told it to exclude the whole original external drive. TM immediately started doing a proper backup which only took a few hours.
The one thing I wanted to point out is that even though Pondini suggested Excluding the old Backup.db folder, this apparently is not enough.  Because when you do that, it wants to go in there and exclude every little file one by one and for god knows what reason, there is a huge number of these buggers.
So it looks like if you have an external that contains an old TM backup, you have to copy the other files (the ones you want to keep) somewhere else, erase the drive and put those files back on it before you can do a TM backup of it.
Thank you to Pondini once again for his invaluable help.
    Bo

Thanks for your reply V.K. much appreciated.
I have gone into the options and I can see my external drives there, but for some reason I can't remove them from the exclusion list. I can add and remove the Laptop HD from this list, but for some reason the "-" button becomes disabled whenever I select the external Hard Drives.
Is there a reason for this? I've been using both drives for a while, so they are both Mac formatted.
    Thanks again.

  • Time Machine LOG file, does one exist

I'm getting errors saying that the time machine backup has failed, but there seems to be no detail as to how it failed. Yet, when I look at the Time Machine status, it will show that backups are completing. I just no longer can find out if they are really any good or not.
I need a LOG file or something where I can see the actual error message and diagnose the real problem. Telling me there is an error but not what is going on is just not at all helpful.

You are asking in the wrong forum.

  • Does Time Machine automatically reformat a non-Mac OS Extended hard drive?

A friend has just told me something surprising he read in the "Mountain Lion Missing Manual".
It apparently says that if you connect a FAT or NTFS formatted hard drive to your Mac and startup Time Machine, it will be automatically reformatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) by TM.
    Is this true?

Here is the quote from David Pogue's, "Mountain Lion - The Missing Manual"
Note: The backup drive must be a standard Mac-formatted hard drive—yet many new drives bought by Mac fans come preformatted as Windows disks. Fortunately, Time Machine automatically reformats them to the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) scheme, which it requires. Thoughtful, really.
It sounds too good to be true  .  .  .  . .  can anyone confirm it?
