Time Machine - Refusing to Backup!!

Hi All,
Really losing my patience with Time Machine now!!
After having issues with my old external hard drive and it failing to complete the very first initial backup (it stopped at 1.44 GB every time and an error popped up) I visited the Genius Bar who advised me I needed a new hard drive and it sounded like the hard drive was damaged.
Today I exchanged my hard drive for another, and guess what! The same problem occurs with this new one. I phoned Apple support and he refused to help me any further unless I pay!! I don't really want to drive 30 miles back to the store to get it fixed either!
I've tried all the support on the website and can't find a solution to my problem here either...
Please help!

Hmmm. Your forum config says you are running Tiger. You need Leopard to have Time Machine.
Did you partition the hard drive using GUID and then format it Mac OS Extended (Journaled?) Did you look in the console.log file for any related messages that might indicate what the problem was? Use the Console application in the Utilities folder. It would also be useful to tell us what the error message was.

Time machine refuses to backup any more

Been using time machine for a long time now. Backing up 100GB or so to a 300GB external disk for the past few months. The disk in question is used exclusively for time machine.
This morning I get this error:
time machine error this backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 11.7 GB but only 3.4 GB are available.
This is correct, but I thought the whole point was that time machine will just delete previous backups.
Do I have any option other than to re-format the disk, thus losing ALL previous backups?

Do you have the +Warn when old backups are deleted+ box in TM Preferences > Options checked?
If so, un-check it, and TM will begin deleting old backups when it needs room for new ones.
If not, TM may have started a new "sequence" of backups, as if you'd gotten a new Mac. This can leave the old backups "stranded," since TM on one Mac won't delete the backups from (what it thinks is) a different Mac.
Have you done any of the following lately: Had certain hardware repairs, especially a new internal HD or logic board; done a full restore; changed your computer's name via System Preferences > Sharing?

Time Machine refuses to backup

First off, hello .
Second, I'm about to explode. This problem has been irritating me for the past 6 months.
The problem: "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
My Attempted Solutions (in order...kind of)
1. Erased and reformatted the disk - fail
2. Erased the disk and formatted it as MS-DOS (FAT) and then had the Time Machine application format it for me - fail...
3. Deleted everything to do with Time Machine except the application and re-configured it - fail :/
4. Verified the hard drive (it passed) then tried again - fail -_-'
5. Repaired disk permissions and verified the start up disk and then tried again - fail >.<
6. Rebooted my computer and attempted it again - fail >:(
7. Erased Time Machine completly from my computer and transferred it from another mac via flash drive - fail >:O
8. Yelled at the computer and the hard drive for a couple of minutes - fail
I have no idea what to do. I've been using an alternate backup application, but it will never compare to Time Machine. This is a good little hard drive that I picked up at a store for 20 bucks and I've never had problems with it. I've owned and used macs since the late 90's. I've never had any problems until now. I know there's a solution to this in which a certain file or files can cause the backup to fail. I absolutely cannot remove any of the files I'm backing up. I refuse to re-install my OS. I have to have 24/7 access to Logic 9 . Please help me out.

Thanks, but that didn't seem to do the trick. Time Machine seems to be getting stuck on .wav files. The problem is, I have countless wav files on my computer that are part of Logic, Ableton Live, sample libaries, viynl conversions, and so on and so forth. They must be backed up. I find the solution to exclude these files from the backup extremely pointless consdiering the fact that I need them. Any other suggestions? Anyone else have any tricks? I hope this is fixed eventually; I don't want to upgrade to Lion for various reasons nor do I want to upgrage for something this simple and something that should've been fixed and polished before the OS was released.

Time Machine does not backup home/user directory (on separate drive)

I recently installed a SSD into my Mini. Due to size restrictions, my home/user directory has to be kept on another drive. I retained the stock 1TB drive that came with the Mini for this.
Ok, installed the SSD, restored a Time Machine backups (sans user data). Used a different admin user and configured my user to use the 1TB drive for it's home directory (/Volumes/1TB/home/<user>). Restart, log in as my user, all is good. All data, settings, etc is there. Everything looks normal.
Time Machine REFUSES to backup this directory. It will backup the 1TB drive and anyting else I create in it, but not the home directory. I tried every permission trick I could think of or found online. I even tested it further by formatting the 1TB drive fresh, adding a new user, configuring the user to use the 1TB for their home directory and it still won't back it up (this was a test of permissions the OS set, to make sure I didn't change my data perms somewhere along the way). Time Machine would not backup the new user's home directory on the 1TB drive.
Any thoughts? I can't be the first person to have their home directory on a non-OS drive.
If I were to create a folder/file in /Volumes/1TB/<test file> ... Time Machine gets it perfect. It just will NOT touch /Volumes/1TB/home/<anything here>

Open the Time Machine preference pane and unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Options button. If there is one particular folder with items that are not being backed up reliably, add it to the list of excluded items. If there are many such folders, add your home folder to the list, or add a whole volume (i.e., what Apple calls a "disk.") Save the changes.
Start a backup, or wait for one to happen automatically. When it's done, open the preference pane again and remove the exclusion(s) you made earlier. Back up again and see whether there's a change.

Time machine won't backup, yet plenty of space & not much used on Mac HD

Well, this is yet another "Time machine won't backup becuase there is not enough space" thread. I have searched Google and threads here but it's still a mystery why this error is occurring and it seems there is no clear solution. I also looked at the Apple Time Machine errors FAQ as well.
Here are my specs and what I have tried so far.
2010 Mac Pro Quad Core with 1 TB hard drive with 12 GB RAM. (137 GB used so far on internal Mac hard drive disk, so about 863 GB free space).
- New external 1 TB hard drive initialized as Time Machine backup disk when inserted for the first time.
The exact error I am getting is this: "This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 1.80 TB but only 999.20 GB are available."
I have tried deleting the Time Machine system preference, reinitializing the external disk, clearing the system caches with Cocktail, restarting and letting Time machine ask me all over again if I wanted to use the external drive for Time Machine. Still the same error.
My question is how on earth can 1.80 TB be required for the backup when I only have 137 GB of used space?

Two possibilities:
There's another disk (or disks) connected to your Mac. If they're formatted HFS+, Time Machine is trying to back it/them up as well. You can exclude them per #10 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). The 1.8 TB includes 20% for temporary workspace on the TM drive, so TM is estimating the backup at about 1.5 TB.
Something on your internal HD is corrupted, causing an incorrect calculation. Verify your internal HD, per #6 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum).

How do I use a Mac Mini + Airport Express + Time Machine disk to backup another iMac?
The question pretty much says it all.
I have a Mac Mini with an attached 3TB Hard Drive used for Time Machine Backups.
I have an Airport Extreme base station which services that machine plus several others.
I would like to backup my new iMac and a MacBook Pro to the Mac Mini.
What do I need to do on the mini to export that hard drive so that it can be used as a Time Machine target from the other systems?
All systems are running 10.6.8.

Well you would have to do backups over a network which is much slower and has highest chance of becoming corrupt. I think your best option would be to get an apple time capsule to act as a network and back if thats how you wanna do that

Time Machine will remove old backups automatically. It tells you when it does, but of course by then it's too late.
There is no recovering deleted backups, since it was necessary to overwrite them with newer backups.

Time Machine fails to backup HD and stalls computer when backing up to external HD (Western Digital WD5000MT) when using Firewire 800 but works fine using USB

I have a mid 2012 MBP (MacbookPro9,1) running Mountain Lion 10.8.2. When I start a Time Machine backup to an external Western Digital HD (WD5000MT) connected using a Firewire 800 cable, my open programs stop responding and in general my computer freezes up not allowing me to open activity monitor or the console utility. I can't even shut down or restart my computer and must hard boot to reset. Though removing the firewire cable that goes to the external HD can sometimes get my system working again. However, the WD external HD also has a usb port and when I connect it to my computer via a USB cable, Time Machine seems to backup my system fine without stalling my computer. This same external HD worked fine with Firewire 800 using my old late 2007 MBP running snow leopard. I should note that my brother has the exact same model WD external HD and he also had issues with the firewire port on his MBP running mountain lion. I have run the disk utility checking for disk/file permission errors and the drive itself seems fine. I initially formatted that drive as ExFAT but while troubleshooting reformatted to HFS+ and still had the same issue. I tested using a different firewire 800 cable but still had the same issue. Can't think of anything else to do. I don't have another firewire-compatible device to test if it is the HD vs the firewire port. I would prefer to use the firewire port for quicker transfer speeds but I'm stuck with USB for now. Any suggestions?

As the harddrive is full, Can the time machine clear old backups, and override them with new backups. For example 5 - 6 days +++ old. Backups were proformed dayly

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

Doesn't Time Machine delete old backups when it needs more space?

I've had time machine running for a long time now. It worked flawlessly for quite some time.
Today it gave me the error that there was not enough free space on the disk to complete the backup (the error message says something like there is 360 GB of data on the Time Machine drive already, 140 GB of free space and it would require more than that to complete my backup). I have a 500 GB Time Machine disk and my Mac has a 500 GB hard drive, so I should technically never run out of space.
The Time Machine almost acts like this is the first time I've ever backed up, which is not true. Shouldn't Time Machine delete old backups to make space for the new? What's even weirder is that if I open the "Star Wars" window of Time Machine I only see one backup from March 31, 2011, but I have been running Time Machine for well over a year now. I'm totally confused as to what happened. Any advice on how to get my Time Machine back up and running (without buying a new drive) would help!

You see only one backup in the Time Machine window because Time Machine has deleted the older backups to make space to do the current backup.
Time machine needs some working space to do its backups, and so backing up a 500GB drive onto a 500GB time machine volume is not ideal.
However, I do essentially the same thing, and what I do, when I have this problem, is exclude things from the backup.
First off, figure out what you changed. If you moved things from one partition to another, then that will cause a backup of the size of the thing that was moved. This may be why you have a large backup.
When I have this problem, I exclude large things that have changed recently from the backup. This makes the backup smaller, and means that there is less working space needed. I do this until I get a successful backup. Then I remove things, one by one, from the exclusion list, and back up after each one.
So, for instance if you just put 4 new folders on your drive, each of which s 20GB of data and they are named A, B, C and D, add all four to the exclusion list, do a backup, then remove A from the exclusion list (leaving B, C & D on it) and do a backup, and continue like this, adding 20GB of backup data each time until none of the new data is on the exclusion list and you get a completed backup.
Another possible issue, if you use multiple partitions, is that Time Machine may be keeping an obsolete backup of a partition that you previously reformatted. To see if this is the case, go into time machine (The universe interface) and go back to the most recent backup it shows. Click on your computer and see what partitions show up-- are any of them old ones that have been reformatted and renamed? You may be storing a duplicate backup because Time Machine does not realize that the disk that went away isn't coming back (because it has been reformatted as a different partition)
You can right-click on these items and remove them from your backup by sleecting "Delete all backups of...." This will free up space as well.

Time Machine fails on backup. Have verified and reformatted external. Have also run etrecheck and Time Machine Buddy.

In making an attempt to copy my files to a different external hard drive, I ran into several issues with document files that were "read-only" so the copying stops. (they were just a couple of pdfs and photos). I deleted all of those files. I then ran back up again after verifying the external I have designated for Time Machine. (Ive also completely erased, repaired and verified this drive several times over the past few weeks) Backup failed, again.
I feel like my next move is to start deleting the "files" that are causing the errors listed above in TM Buddy (they are mostly photos in iphoto)... but then I realized that some of those errors are associated with the backing up of my iphone.
Just now, I pasted a portion of my system log into Textedit, and the application just hanged... for 2 hours. I finally force quit it.

Hi! I did exactly as you said. I was able to backup with my home folder excluded, but was not able to do so after I removed the exclusion. It crapped out 5G before finishing.

Time Machine deleted "expired" backups. Why?

I want to know why Time Machine deleted some backups although the disk has plenty of free space available.

Backups are alright so it is not an important issue but I am wondering if something in my preferences set is wrong.

Time Machine keeps hourly backups for one day, then daily backups for a week, etc. What you are seeing is it deleting the daily backups form more than 24 hours ago. This is what it does, nothing to worry about.

Pull the power cable from the back of the Time Capsule
Count to ten
Plug the power cable back into the back of the Tme Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup again.
