Time Machine reinstall

Have a Time Machine backup on an external drive. I needed to install a clean system and was told (by an Apple Genius) that after system installation, a Time Machine backup would copy everything BUT the old, (possibly) corrupted system and restore the machine to its previous condition.
Did the Time Machine backup, but alas, my info was NOT installed. Restarted. Shut down. Nada. Checked the address book, and it was empty.
Do I need to startup from the Snow Leopard disc and then do the Time Machine backup to have my info reinstalled? Did I miss a step?

First, can I make sure I understand you? "Backup" is copying your system drive files (system files, applications, and user files) to the backup drive. "Restore" is bringing those files back. Which are you talking about - backup or restore?
If you're talking about restore, a full system restore does exactly that - it restores everything, including any possible corrupted files.

Again, do you mean "restore"? What exactly did you do? Yes, if you wanted to do a full system restore, you would boot from the install DVD and use the "Restore from Backup".

    I also have the exact same problem.
    I NEVER use Safari, but I tried it just to see if it would also crash. It did. It crashes under all user accounts as well. Please understand that iTunes crashes when I go to the store, and The App Store just crashes after a few seconds (~10) after launch.
    Any help with this guys? Here is the log file/dump from starting the App Store...
    I am willing to restore whatever from hand. I really don't want to have to restore the OS from scratch and then manually reload everything.
    Also. I tried removing all the extensions mentioned, and I had none.
    I tried the disk repair utility and it found no errors.

  • Backed up with Time Machine, reinstalled OS X, how do I import contacts?

    Hi all,
    I backed up my MacBook with Time Machine, and reinstalled OS X 10.5.5 on it, then upgraded to 10.5.8. How can I re-import all of my contacts back from the Time Machine backup?

    There is no AddressBook folder in the backup. There's an Application Data folder, but no AddressBook folder is inside of it.
    EDIT: Thank god! I misread the post, and now my addresses are all back! Thank you SOOO much. Definitely adding that link to my favorites. One more thing. It's not about contacts, but it's about the Time Machine backup. How can I get my applications back? I tried copying and pasting the Microsoft Office 2004 folder to my applications folder, and it worked, but when I tried to run it it gave me an error. When I edit again I will tell you what it says.
    Do you know what folders/files I need to copy for this?
    You can not restore applications like MS office by hand from TM backups. they restore stuff all over the system and you need to get all those files. you can only restore by hand applications that were installed by drag and drop. fro MS office and any other app that used an installer you need to either reinstall them from scratch or run Migration Assistant (located in /Applications/Utilities). it will let you migrate all your apps from the backup. you can not pick and choose which ones to migrate though. MA also lets you migrate all your users (with all their data) but you seem to have decided to recreate them all by hand so uncheck that option.

  • Clean install / time machine / reinstall

    Just came back from Genius bar where we did a clean install & reinstalled my apps only.  When I came home I 'entered' Time Machine (top left); selected most recent backup (from Genius Bar this morning) & let it run.  Came back; laptop was asleep; my laptop has almost the same amount of memory available since prior to my Genius visit:
    - I can't find my music
    - I can't find my photos
    - Apps were installed properly
    - because memory is almost the same, I'm assuming my music/photos are on here somewhere
    - not a biggy but things are different:
         - I'm still on 10.8.2 but the left side view of Finder looks different;
         - Mail looks different; my "X" "-" "+" buttons aren't Red, Yellow & Green anymore;
         - I can't remove an App from the Dock by dragging it off to go 'poof';
         - I can't drag an App to add to the Dock
    Any help would be grateful

    Back up all data.
    This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
    If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
    Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
    The first step should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary.
    Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
    When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
    from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
    In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
    Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
    Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
    Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
    Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
    Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Mail v. 5.3 and Address Book Won't Work from Time Machine Reinstall

    I installed a new harddrive in my MacPro 15" (early 2011) running OS X 10.7.5.  I successfully reinstalled OS X10.7.5 and all my software/files from Time Machine.  However, I get messages on Mail v. 5.3 (1283/1278) and Address Book that "you can't use this version" with Mac OS X v 10.7.5 (Build 11G63) and I should check with the developer. Everything is up to date regarding updates.  Can someone help with this problem please?  Thanks.

    Hello,
    Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    *Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
    Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
    (Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
    If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
    Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk.

  • App store won't open after running time machine reinstall

    my HD crashed last week, got it replaced and just got my iMac back (20" intel). I ran a restore from my Time Machine backup from before the crash (took forever, but finished).
    All looked fine but I found two problems...
    1) Safari would crash without opening. I fixed that by just downloading and reinstalling Safari.
    2) the App store does the same thing. the icon jumps a few times and then just stops and won't open. Unfortunately, it's part of the OS and it doesn't seem Apple allows direct downloads of the App Store app. I'm current on my OS so I'm not sure how to fix this problem.
    Again, summary, restore from Time Machine, App Store won't open, OS is up-to-date. Any suggestions?

    Hi,
    Install the v10.6.6 combo update available here. It's ok to do this even though you are already running v10.6.6. The combo includes fixes that were not included in the original update.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349
    Restart your Mac and try the MAS again.
    You can download apps directly from the MAS once you have it running.
    Considering the TM backup took so long, make sure there's enough space on your Mac startup disk.
    Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.*

  • Time Machine - reinstalling OSX

    Hi all,
    I am just looking for some advice really...
    I have recently bought a MacBook Pro and am looking to pass on my MacBook to my girlfriend after reinstalling OSX. I'm pretty much starting again with the new MacBook Pro but would like a back up of my data from my old MacBook. I have been backing up using Time Machine on a regular basis. Will these Time Machine backups contain all the data I would need to refer back to or is it worth taking some extra measures before reinstalling OSX? I have backed up things like Photos and music separately too.
    Any advice is welcome.
    Thanks.

    Provided you are simply reinstalling Leopard on the same hardware and nothing else is changing (particularly your computer name in the sharing preference pane), Time Machine should be unaffected.

  • Please HELP! = major disk issue - none of OSX "help" tools works (repair/time machine/reinstall)

    Hello to all,
    My first post, but directly with a very difficult case I suddenly encountered yesterday evening...
    When, as usually I opened the lid, it turned on from sleep, as usually, however frozen suddenly... so I did hard turn off... with ON/OFF button. When it turned on again, I had no possibility to put my password, but I was directly faced with "OSX tools" with 4 options (it is in Polish so I try the translation):
    1) Recover from Time Machine back up;
    2) Install OSX again;
    3) Get online help;
    4) Disk tool;
    I am totally ****** off how this could happen. There was so much stuff on the disk, including the whole Aperture libary with thousends of my daughter photos (she was born a year ago) - priceless stuff.
    I would never expect Apple to give me such an "experience"... never heppened to me on any PC's before..
    I have 2011 MacBook Pro 13" with Maverics.
    This is what I encountered using each of solutions:
    1) I use Synology DS209 for Time Machine backup (connected via Lan cable). As far as I remember backup is about 2 months old. Anyway when I choose this option. OSX tool finds the Time Machine in DiskStation, connects to "MacBook Pro" timemachine on the external disk, BUT cannot find any BACKUP further on!!!! I am lost!
    2) second, but not preferred option is OSX reinstallation.After initial analysis, and conditions acceptance, I cannot choose the only disk available. I can see only "recovery disk", but when I click on it, there is a message popping up "This disk is blocked". Obviously this prevents any further activities in reinstallation;
    3) Third option is BS clearly, no help at all.
    4) Disk tool shows me several disks / I am not an expert, so I am not sure how to understand it (Bold is active, standard non active):
    - 320,07 GB Hitach HTS54503...
         - Macintosh HD
    - Superdrive
    - disk1
         - OS X Base System
    I run "check disk" for Hitachi. No problems. Nothing to repair.
    I run "check disk" for Macintosh HD => This disk requires repair. So I run "repair". Quickly I get a message "Disk Tool is unable to repair this disk. Please backup as much data as possible, format the disk and recover the files from backup"..... Really????? How can I backup any files???
    DEAR COMMUNITY, please HELP!
    What to do in order not to loose any data on one hand and on the other be able to use the computer again?
    Please note I do not use "recovery CD" all is running without anything in CD/DVD drive.
    Thanks in advance for your answers, competence and experience!
    Disk tool does not give any solution, showing

    You are in a bad situation, because the internal drive has malfunctioned and your only backup is on a device that is not suitable for use with Time Machine, despite what its manufacturer says.
    You must try to make another backup now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible.
    There are several ways to back up a Mac that is not fully functional. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • Time Machine and Reinstall

    I am planning to reinstall OSX 10.5 as it has been about 3 years since I bought my Macbook Pro. Recently it has been a bit sluggish so a complete format and reinstall should do the trick. I am using time machine to back up on a regular basis. My question is that does time machine reinstall all my old application data and settings ONLY or does it also reinstall my old system files as well. Since I am doing a reinstall I do not want any old corrupted system files coming back via time machine.

    Time machine can do both. what you want is equivalent to an archive and install and you actually don't need Time Machine for that. but if you want to do it using Time Machine do an erase and install. upon restart after an erase and install you'll get to setup assistant which will offer to migrate your user data and applications from a TM backup.

  • My drive recently had to be replaced with a new one installed by Apple they reinstalled all my stuff from my time machine. Most my programs had to be updated which I managed with a little help from my friends, but the last one that I can't solve is

    My IMAC OSX 10.6.8   2.8 GHz intelcore  2Duo 4GB 800 Mhz DDR2 SDRam recently had to have its hard drive replaced by apple thy actually had to give me a larger one because mine was no longer available,They also reinstalled all my programs and data from my 2 terrabite time machine back up. I got my system home and found that I had to upgrade most of my programs which I managed with a little help from my friends, but I still have one problem that I can't solve I have a Nikon Coolpix S6 that I have Been Syncing with my Iphoto since I've got it 3 years ago and now when I place it in the cradle the program reconizes it and says that it is going to start to import the new photos the little white wheel in the center of the screen starts spinning but nothing else happens. I checked all my connections and they are goog plus I even downloaded a nikon progam just to double check the camera & cradle and it works there but it wont pair off with my IPhoto.

    First go to iPhoto Preferences, look in both General and Advanced tabs to make sure that things are set to import from camera into iPhoto.
    Then if that doesn't help, connect the camera and open Image Capture in your Applications > Utilities folder and see if you can use Image Capture to reset the import path from the camera to iPhoto.

  • I have reinstalled my OS without time machine (using the disc). I want to restore some pictures in the iPhotos which are already in the time machine i was using previously. How can I restore iPhoto from previous time machine?

    My mac book was incredibly slow. When I went to Mac store, they asked me to reinstall the OS with CD and not with the time machine. I reinstalled the operating system. But when I opened the applications, all those started as fresh applications as usual. I have the backup of all other data in another hard disc. But unfortunately, I forgot to copy the photos before reinstallation. I have those photos in my time machine back up. But when I opened time machine, it started like a fresh (very new) time machine and it started backing up my present OS (the reinstalled one). I cannot open the previous time machine, which is in the same hard drive. I wish to open the previous time machine to get the photos which are backed up previuosly. When opened the time machine disc (manually by clicking the icon), i can see all the thigs which I had previously in my macbook. But unfortunately, i cannot access those through time machine! Can anybody help me please?

  • Old FileVault crashed my MacBook Pro, had to delete, reinstall and Time Machine restore failed. Trying to manually rebuild. No iPhoto pics, no iTunes music and NO DOCUMENTS found! Any thoughts?

    Here's the ordeal. I'm running a 2007 MacBook Pro 17 inch with Lion OS. When I converted to Lion, I didn't have enough room on my harddrive to convert to the new FileVault, so I remained on the old system. Less than a week ago I reboot my computer because iPhoto seems to be stuck on "cataloging" my photos, though after days of letting it run, it doesn't do anything. After the reboot, my computer appears as if it had been reset to factory settings with all my programs gone, etc. I'm like, hey, I've got Time Machine, I'll restore it. After the restore is run, when I go to login, I get the dreadful error message, "You are unable to log into the FileVault user "John" at this time. Logging into the account failed because an error occurred". I searched the internet via my iPhone for suggestions and followed everyone of them, all the way down to erasing my harddrive and reinstalling Lion. So I get back into my computer and think I'm golden. I go to restore my computer via Time Machine and wham....I'm right back to that error message. I think, ok, I'll do it again. This time it messes us even more, giving me two login screens, one for the new Lion like before I restored the computer and then a second, as if it were restored, but unable to login. On top of that, I couldn't get back to the Command-R page! I thought I was really screwed! Well, I finally figured a way back, or maybe it was just that it finally decided to cooperate, I don't know, but I erased my harddrive again, and reinstalled again and thought, well, I'll rebuild manually by selecting what I want to restore from the Time Machine drive. I was able to get all my applications back and running, but to my dismay, I seemingly have lost all my iTunes music (except that which Apple has graciously setup to redownload now "thank you!) plus all my iPhoto's and even worse, all my DOCUMENTS!!!! Here I thought Time Machine from backing all this stuff up, but with over a years worth of back-ups I cannot locate any photos, music, or my documents on my drive to extract! Needless to say, I will never be using Time Machine again to back up my computer, I'll find another program or at least do it all manually. But my question is: am I looking in the wrong places for this files? Are they hidden under some unknowning folder that doesn't list it as music, photos or files? I can manage with the music, I can live with the photos because my wife has many of them on her computer and I have many uploaded to Facebook, but my files! My documents, thousands of them, many with information I won't be able to compile again, seemingly gone unless someone out there has any ideas?!!!
    I even had iPhoto search the drive for photos and after hours of the barber shop pole spinning I cancelled the command for I figured it wasn't going to find anything.
    If anyone has any suggestions, or if Apple, you are reading this and can provide some direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Also - my battery has been telling me "service battery" for a LONG time and then it switched to "replace soon" som time ago. Can't really see what this has to do with anything but whatever.
    That could conceivably explain all the problems you're describing. Replacing a Mac's battery should not be postponed since a failed battery will cause other problems to occur. It is also possible that its hard disk has failed, which means the information on it may soon become unrecoverable.
    ... my latest TM back up was from April 2014, can I just run this when I have rescued everthing and then it might not be as slow?
    If that Time Machine backup remains intact, it may be the only viable means of recovering that Mac's information. I suggest you do not attempt to restore its contents to your ailing Mac.
    Given that you are having trouble creating a newer Time Machine backup you should stop using that Mac immediately and have it serviced as soon as you are able. Do not take it to anyone other than Apple or a service facility authorized by Apple, for the very reasons you explained. If there are no Apple Stores in your vicinity search for an Authorized Apple Service Provider using the Contact Us link below. Use one of the options that appear under Contact Apple Support. The language on that page will be different for your location.

  • I changed the name of my imac to reflect it's new location, but inadvertently, it unchecked the box to allow the administrative user account to administer the machine.  I am trying to reinstall with a time machine backup and am unable

    I need a little help.  I changed the name of my imac to reflect it's new location, but inadvertently, when I saved the change, the system unchecked the "allow this account to administer the computer" so now I can't make any changes....  I tried to reinstall the OS, but it wants me to go online while installing and use my apple id, but this is not my iMAC, so I don't want to use my account.  Also, I am working in a building that will not allow me network access until I authenticate, which can't be done unless I open the browser first.  So I'm stuck at this point.  I can't even restore a time machine backup that I have because it gives the error message that the system encountered an error.  Any suggestions?
