Time Machine Restore After New Logic Board

Older iMac (2009) had hard drive and logic board replaced.  Running latest system (10.10.2) before and after logic board replacement.
When attempting to restore from a Time Machine backup made prior to the new logic board, although the iMac sees the Time Capsule and the "Data" file, attempts to proceed with the restore are met with error message "There was a problem connecting to the server [name of Time Capsule] - contact your administrator."
Any experience with this issue?  Anybody successfully perform a restore following a new logic board?

  • Time Machine doesn't recognize old sparsebundle after new logic board

    Installed new logic board in pre-Isight 20" iMac due to capacitor swelling and kernel panic. I had also erased the internal HD. I was able to restore all my files to internal HD from Time Machine backup on the 1TB Time Capsule. Now I'm trying to back up my restored iMac to Time Capsule, but there is insufficient space. Time Capsule has three sparsebundle files: one for the 20"iMac prior to new logic board, one for a Powerbook, and one for a newer 24"iMac. Time Machine wants to create a new sparsebundle for the restored iMac, but there is not enough room and I would like it use the residing sparsebundle so that I will have backups prior to the point the new logic board was installed. I tried just changing the name of the old IMac Time Capsule sparsebundle file to the new sparsebundle filename that Time Machine creates when attempting backup, but that did not work. Any suggestions?

    1. I thought of just deleting the old sparsebundle in order to make room, but it was a less elegant solution because: a) I'd have to do a complete (i.e. lengthy) backup when really only a few things have changed (mostly software updates) since the restore. b)if something should go wrong with that process, then I've lost my backup file to restore the computer. True, I could archive the old sparsebundle to another drive, and then delete it from the time capsule, but somehow I think there should be a quicker, less labor intensive way that doesn't involve bringing in another hard drive.
    2. I believe you can restore any Mac with any time machine backup. If you boot from the system disk, go to utilities, and select restore from time machine backup, it then allows you to pick any of the files on the disk that time machine has backed up to. After all, even though Time Machine thinks this is a new computer, the restore that I just did makes it essentially the same computer that I had before the failure of the logic board--the desktop looks exactly the same. BTW, the Apple authorized service center that did the logic board replacement had put a clean version of 10.6 on the internal hard drive, and I was unable to use that system to do the restore--it just hung up. I had to do the restore using my system disk CD (and basically downgrading to system 10.5.8)

  • Will time machine do a full backup of external volume (extra storage) after new logic board?

    I have a MacBook Pro running leopard, that just had the logic board replaced. I haven't picked it up yet, but I am told that my hard drive and data were not touched.
    I have read Pondini's very helpfull info/site, so I know that time machine will want to start a new set of backups.
    Here is my question, based on my setup:  in addition to the internal HD, I have a firewire drive for additional storage of files. Time machine backs up both volumes to another, larger, FireWire drive
    Now, after the new logic board, will time machine make a whole new copy of the external storage drive as well as the internal?  Or just the internal?
    Basically, I know time machine will think it's on a new machine, but will it treat the external storage as if it were new as well?
    I would appreciate any help or advice you can give me.  Thanks. 

    Still no answer? I do have the same trouble on my iMac G5 PPC with 10.5.8: I just replaced the MOB and Time Machine insists to create a new bkup! Attempted with "tmutil" command but doesn't work on my OS...it is really impossible to tell the machine to learn the new address? I DON'T want to believe it!

  • Time machine doesn't recognize old time machine backups after new drive

    After getting my original hard drive replaced on apple care. Time machine refuses to recognize time machine backups dating back to October when I first installed Leopard. The Records are there on an "off-board" Lacie drive. Any fixes for this? I have had so many problems with Time Machine I am afraid to turn it back on. Last time it took over 40 hours to do an initial back-up.

    Yes I had been having multiple problems and once saved the entire system in archive and install and also time machine had been active since October when I first installed it. all of this was saved to an off-board Lacie drive I can find the old time machine files easily enough but time machine since the new drive, does not recognize them. Since I got the drive back with tiger installed, I first had to re-install Leopard so I don't know if that caused Time machine to start over . I did do an archive and install at that time but there was nothing really to archive since they had not recovered my old files. If this wasn't bad enough The Technician replaced my administrator password with his own and the was off for a few days and I couldn't do anything for awhile. You have been very helpful thank you for your time on my behalf.

  • Horror after new logic board installation.

    I have an older 2008 MacBook Pro 2.5 GHz 17" computer which after years or erratic behaviour (overheating and black screen after that) forced me to buy and install new logic board. I've done it myself due to my extensive (unfortunately) experience in baking the old board. All went well. The computer booted however it took very long time to actually load the system. After 20 minutes or so I interrupted this and switched off the system. After switching again it booted quicker and loaded the system as normal. Long story short. All the components register properly under system profiler. However both firewire ports don't mount my external hard drive. The drive works perfectly with other computers. The drive (Lacie) when connected to either port (400 or 800) spins up and indicates connection made (blue light is on). I can even hear it mounting but it never shows up on the screen. The computer literally doesn't see it even after Finder relaunch. I've followed all the usual resetting procedures found on the internet with no results. Same problem with ethernet. It shows in the system profiler, after connecting cable computer sees it but no internet connection is made. The network setting says: self-assigned IP ... and shows orange indicator. I never had any of these issues with my old logic board. Again here I've done all the resetting with no results. Before coming to this forum I've spent the entire week trying to figure it out.
    Can somebody please at least point me in the right direction as to what should I do.

    Actually there are no NEW 2008 MBP logic boards. Apple stopped having them made sometime in 2008 or 2009. All that are available now are used, reconditioned and or left over stock (but I doubt that). Seeing as the 2008 model had a recall for failed nVidia GPUs all of them have been baked and or reflowed.
    So it seems the current replacement 2008 LB you have is also faulty.

  • Serial No. no longer shows in system profiler after new logic board..!

    My Macbook had to go in to my Apple Service centre to get the random shutdown fault fixed. They fitted a new logic board and last night I noticed that the System Profiler no longer show the computers serial number. Instead it says "systemserialnumb" where before it listed the Macbooks serial number. Does anybody know whether this will affect my 3 year Applecare warranty as normally they check your machines warranty status by confirming the serial number? I have all the documents but would not normally carry them all if away from home.

    I love this board..ask a question and someone always knows the answer..! Mort..thanks, at least now I know it has happened to other people and also that the serial number is also to be found under the battery which for repair and service purposes is good. I am a little surprised that the engineers don't routinely reset it at the time of repair though as it is one of the pretty relevant bits of information in the "about this computer" button.

    if i backup my mac os in an external hdd with time machine and then ill change my mac hdd, can time machine restore my os in new hdd?(for example by Recovery Disk Assistant)

    Naming it the same tends to make things easier. Time Machine can backup your entire OS as long as you haven't excluded anything in System Preferences/Time Machine/Options.
    Another option is to make a bootable clone. You should have more than one backup on 2 different drives since hard drives do fail.

  • Time machine restore after crashed internal drive

    The internal drive on my daughter's MacBook crashed. She had been using Time Machine during the school year, so we have backups that are a little over a month old. I am a bit confused by the different Time Machine restore methods. When I originally set up Time Machine, I first set up 2 partitions on the external drive. The first was an image of the system at that date created by Restore. The second partition was used by Time Machine. I installed a new hard drive in the MacBook. I then did a Restore from the external drive of the System Image. What is the best way to restore to her last Time Machine backup? I want to make sure she has all of her class notes and papers in the restored system. It appears from reading some of the discussions, I could have just done an installation from the install DVD and then used the Migration Assistant to restore from time Machine. Is this preferred. As her system was originally a Tiger that we upgraded to Leopard. I have been considering doing a clean install of Leopard and then a restore from Migration Assistant. If I do that, is it better to do the clean install of Leopard, then Migration Assistant, and then install Ilife 08? Will that bring over the programs she has downloaded? Is there software or anything we would loose from the by doing a clean install from Leopard and iLife08 that is bundled only in the factory install disks? I would like to do this the best way possible and am looking for suggestions.

    that's up to you. the easiest is to restore from TM. if you are having problems with your current system you can do a manual restore but it's a lot more work.

I use Time Machine to back up both the internal drive (soon to be 1TB) and the 1TB external drive (once again, my iMovie Events).     yes. the easiest option is to do a full system restore which will restore your system drive. to do that boot from the leopard install DVD and choose 'restore system from backup" from the Utilities menu at the top. you don't need to install leopard on the new drive first. the drive can be blank.

  • Time Machine restore to new computer

    My iMac G5 has completely failed, and I am getting a new iMac Core2Duo. As the old computer is dead, I won't be able to use migration assistant to copy my stuff from the old computer. So I will need to restore my files from the Time Machine back-up.
    Slightly worried because I'm moving from a PowerPC to Intel machine.
    Any tips or ideas? I know I will need to go through the install DVD to initiate the restore process.
    Any help would be really useful!

    I was just going to make a post myself but thought perhaps I could do it as a reply to this post.
    I have had the same issue and ... Time Machine doesn't work. Apple Care has been pretty much useless in solving my problem. Background: 6 month old 24' iMac, I'm doing a software update and the OS update (10.5.6) fails. System resources are corrupted so I have to do an OS reinstall. Except that doesn't work. Bad file system. Only fix is to wipe the disk and reinstall. That doesn't work, Apple replaces the hard drive "bad firmware". Hmm.. So I go to restore from Time Machine - the restore won't work either from the new install or the migration assistant. The symptom is that the Time Machine app can see the external hard drive, knows it's a time machine disk, but says no system is present. I don't get the list of folders (dates) I'm supposed to get at the various restore points. The Time Machine disk is fine. I can use the finder and see all the files and folders. I can do the painful drag and drop restore. I'll have to reinstall apps from scratch but the data is there. I've deleted the interrupted backup, deleted the "Latest" folder, done a variety of stuff Time Machine tech support has suggested. It just doesn't work. No explanation. I've got a good Time Machine backup and essentially a new machine and no-go.
    What I would do is make a back up of your time machine disk. I would get another disk and do a drag and drop copy of the data you care about. Make a backup of the backup in other words. Then use the Time Machine restore function to selectively restore folders.
    What I think is happening here is that despite the assertion that Time Machine is a simple incremental backup, I think that there are ties between the source and the target at the system level. In my case I had a more complex file system than usual, multiple user accounts, and probably a corrupted OS that migrated itself onto the time machine volume. I think Time Machine is looking to the system files somewhere on the Time Machine disk and if those are corrupted your Time Machine disk as a source for a full restore is useless.
    I'll probably make a separate post on this so sorry in advance on that but if anyone has any ideas on how I can solve this and help the original poster Mr. Tanner avoid this, it would be great. Maybe a Time Machine system engineer is reading and can offer some help. I live in San Jose and I'm happy to bring my Mac and Time Machine disk over to Cupertino....

  • Lost my registrations and my sites in iweb after new logic board was instal

    I recently brought my MacBook Pro in to the Apple to store to check out why it wasn't starting up properly. I would hear a chime but the display wouldn't even light up. We tried an SMC and a PRAM reset. We tried plugging in an external monitor and reseating the ram. They had determined after 30 minutes at the genius bar that I must have a faulty logic board. Four days later I picked up my repaired notebook and everything was fine.
    I then began noticing some very peculiar things. Saved settings seemed to be missing. My browsers cache was not as I had left it. My BootCamp Volume had gone back to a previous state prior to some applications being installed and even had a user account missing. So far, this didn't seem to be enough to make an issue of until tonight.
    I went to open an application and it prompted me for my registration number. I've had this app installed for about 6 months now and never had an issue. Then I go to open iWeb and discover that all my sites and pages are missing. I haven't looked for them because they really aren't that important to me... but what if they were?!
    Many settings and preferences are perfectly fine but I find it extremely hard to understand how coincidentally all of these other items crapped out immediately after a new logic board was installed. Is there any explanation for this at all? Is there any further testing or further info I can provide to get to the bottom of this?

    Look in "About This Mac" in the  menu for the serial number. They probably didn't copy it to the new logic board. They can download software to do this from a website restricted to Apple service departments.

    Hi folks
    I used the cmd R option on booting the MBP and did a disk scan and it reported errors that could not be fixed/repaired.
    So I opted to install a brand new 1Tbyte Seagate hybrid hard drive and restore from my time machine backup.
    So I installed the new drive in the MBP...it stated that it needed to restore from the internet and I was treated with a rotating globe for about 10 minutes.
    It then gave the normal restore options and I opened to format the new drive as a mac drive etc...
    Selected the most recent TM backup from USB drive and pointed it to the new formatted HD in the MBP.
    So far so good I thought....it said it was restoring....
    waited about 4.5 hours and apparently it completed when I was out so I did not see any messages just a normal looking mavericks desktop BUT with "?" In the dashboard where all the applications icons should be?????
    I assume something went wrong somewhere so I reinstalled the old HD and restarted TM and it's not starting to backup all 493Gbyte of disk whichI. Understand is normal after a full restore.
    So...what to do now??? I'll wait for the 7 odd hours of TM to complete but how best should I proceed with the new HD etc...should I reinstall and copy mavericks to it from a memory stick and then attempt a new restore from the recent TMS backup? Or will this cause issues....
    I also have an Inateck hard drive cloning device (brand new never used) so I had wondered if I should simply install the old drive and new drives into this and start the cloning mechanism? OR will this simply clone the errors that were reported on the old drive when it was in the MBP?
    In short I'm not sure what to do for the best now and would welcome helpful suggestions as to how to proceed.

    If at first you don't succeed...
    Last night after the new 493 Gbyte time machine completed. I once again installed the new drive and restarted the MBP ...waited 10 min for the internet to download the basic disk utilities...restarted the restore from TM and waited 6 hours...Happy days it worked perfectly and like a rocket...the old disk had a read write speed of approx 50-60 Mb/s the new one (hybrid drive) measures at 100-110 Mb/s...programmes open and close noticeably faster and it's better than when the MBP was new...
    Apparently this new hybrid drive "learns" frequently used programmes and caches parts that improves start up time etc as time progresses etc...the MBP now starts from cold boot in less than 1 minute compared to 2 plus before...I know minutes should not really matter but it does improve the user experience. I should add I have 16G of RAM installed which does make a difference with Photoshop and Aperture etc.
    Hope this helps others or at least encourages people to try hybrid drives over the much more expensive SSD option.

  • App store and Safari not working after Time Machine restore to new hardware.

    I just had to install a new hard drive to my mid 2010 imac.  I restored with time machine.  I cannot find the original OS disc.  Upon restoring it appears there is a problem with the webkit framework as Safari, App store, and Skype all freeze upon clicking on them and after bouncing, they never open.  Chrome is working.  What do I do?

    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
    from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
    The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
    Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • Can't open iWeb 09 even after Time Machine restore to new

    Well I broke it!
    I tried to open a saved iWeb html file that was saved from my old Intel Mac Mini running iWeb 08 that I Migrated over via Firewire. I even tried to restore iWeb using Time Machine, from when it worked new out of the box, no luck. When I click on the iWeb icon a small window pops up:
    Can't open file "~/Desktop/WebSite/About_Me.html."
    Locked up. So is there a file that I can modify back to where I had it? Thanks

    iWeb can't open html files. It can't import them, either.

  • Time Machine restore after a new HD

    Hello
    I am thinking of replacing my 17" macbook pro internal hard drive with a SSD. The process seems strait forward but I am a bit put off by all the talk and expense of cloning my current disc.  Is the following suggestion possible?
    1.Back the current drive up with time machine
    2. Remove the old HD and replace with a new SSD. I gather it can fit into the same space.
    3. Do a repair boot of the Macbook from the internet
    4. Format the new SSD
    5. Restore to the new drive from Time Machine
    6. Voila !!!
    7....I bet its not that simple

  • Time Machine Issue with new system board.

    OK MAC Fans here is an issue that I discovered with Time Machine (TM).
    First I have a 17” MacBookPro that has two 1TB external HDs and a 30” monitor attached to it.
    Something happened to my system and the system board had to be replaced.
    The Mac was sent to TX and a new system board was put in it and the very latest OS (10.5.2) was installed on the hard drive.
    The Apple store added my profile so you think everything would be good?
    Wrong!
    None of my applications made it through.
    But I was thinking let just use Time Machine to restore them. WRONG in a way.
    The first thing I did when I got home was set up TM. I pointed TM to the external HD that has all of the previous backup files and TM wanted to backup the system. During the backup I notice that TM created a new directory for the backup files.
    The name of the directory was the name of my MAC. The old directory was also the name of my MAC but with the new OS software release it was stated that you could not use any special characters when naming your MAC or TM may not recognize your backup files (there is a note on this under support).
    The new name is FirstnameLastnameMacBookPro17 the old name was Firstname Lastname’s MacBookPro 17”. TM created a new directory named FirstnameLastnameMacBookPro17 and this was the only files that are visible in TM.
    I deleted the new directory and renamed my MAC back to the old name and TM created a NEW directory with the old name. Now there were 2 directories with the same “old” name. I can not get TM to use the old directory and display the old backup files.
    I was able to drag and drop the files and applications I needed from the previous backup folders back to where I needed them to be so all is not lost but I can not restore files from TM.
    Also I renamed my MAC back to FirstnameLastnameMacBookPro17 and TM automatically changed the name of the new directory to the new name.
    I tried to drag old backup folders from the old TM directory to the new TM directory but received an error that the files can not be modified.
    The only thing that I can think is that when the system board was replaced TM got confused and did not recognize it as the same system. So now I am starting my backup history all over again. The old backup files are good, the only thing is that I have to drag and drop items I want from those folders to the location I want. I can not use the old backup files in TM.
    Dose any one have a magic pill (red or blue) I can take to make the old files visible in TM?

    I decided not to worry about the syncing my TM. I was just at the Apple store and they have decided to replace my MacBookPro. I am going to start my backups on the new system all over again. I know I can drag and drop files that I want from the old files to the new system if I want and that will be go enough.
