Time Machine restore didn't restore some apps
I needed to restore my MBP last night from Time Machine. After the restore, I find that some apps are missing (Time Machine, Grab, Stickies, even System Preferences). How do I get these apps back? I can't seem to find them on the Leopard install Disk.

After Time Machine restore, lost app licenses
So after the Time Machine system restore, various apps loses their licenses. WHY? Apps like Terminal, TextExpander...and more...
Sorry, mis-typed. That should have been Transmit FTP app. So when I launch any of those apps, I am asked for the license key again...

Time Machine Restore Issues - Apps Unexpectedly Quitting
I have a 2009 iMac 21.5" 3.06 Ghz 8GB of RAM using 10.6.8
Recently my original Seagate Hard Drive started to fail (S.M.A.R.T. status: Failing). Luckily I caught it in time, had time machine back ups, and bought and installed new Hard Drive (WD WD1002FAEX) and restored my installation to the last Time Machine backup. (Dealing with the fan speed and noice, but that is a seperate issue)
Everything seems to have worked fine, but I am experiencing issues with Mail, Dashboard and Software Update unexpectedly quitting, when I use them.
Mail opened and imported all my mailboxes and info properly (it appears) but when I click on an email to view it, it quits giving me a crash report.
I have verified and repaired permissions and reset PRAM.
What else could I do to fix this issue?
Thanks,
RyanHere is the Crash Report I get if that helps:

Time Machine restore leads to strange file permission issues
I've had three Mac laptops over the last 8 years. It all started with an iBook. When I bought my first MBP I used the "migration assistant" to move my files over. I started using Time Machine when it was released. I then upgraded the hard drive on the MBP and used Time Machine to restore the data. Later, I bought another MBP and used Time Machine to transition all of my files.
Each Time Machine restore was flawless.
The problem comes from my most recent hard drive upgrade (details are below). After upgrading the hard drive on the second MBP I did a Time Machine restore, which appeared to complete without incident. However a couple of problems, which are probably related, have cropped up.
After clicking on Firefox.app I get "Profile Missing Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible."
The following message is printed to the console: [0x0-0x31031].org.mozilla.firefox[493]: Error: Access was denied while trying to open files in your profile directory. com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[275] ([0x0-0x31031].org.mozilla.firefox[493]): Exited with exit code: 1
I tried to delete my old profile from ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox and the problem persists. Running /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -ProfileManager results in the same error.
The file permissions on the ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox directory are:
drwxrwxr-x 2 my_name staff 68B Feb 20 08:31 Firefox
I'm at a loss here because the permissions look correct. When I run the ProfileManager as "sudo" it starts correctly and let's me edit/create a profile for "root".
I've repaired permissions several times, and the disk utility (and Onyx) don't report any problems. A very similar problem occurs for MS Office problems. When I launch Excel (or any other office app) I get an error message saying that the MS Office Database can't be used. Also interesting is that it builds the font cache every time. If I'm not mistaken the font cache and Office database are also stored in profiles, but not under ~/Library
Short story long, after a Time Machine restore some apps can't seem to write profile information, but the file permissions look correct and Disk Utility can't find any problems with my new disk.
Any help or pointers would be great.

My Macbook Pro was recently stolen, and I have replaced it with a Macbook Air. I attempted to simply do a restore from the Macbook Pro's Time Machine backup, but since the new Macbook Air's hard drive is significantly smaller, a Time Machine restore was not possible. I even tried to choose only settings or only my User Profile (option) when restoring, but the backup was still too large to do a restore onto the new machine. How do I restore my more-expensive apps (ie iWorks) onto my new Macbook without repurchasing them? Also, I reaad somewhere that if you went to the Mac App Store and attempted to repurchase the app and clicked BUY, it would simply alert you that you have already purchased the app (and trigger a re-download)... NOT THE CASE... So I just dropped another $19.99 for a second copy of Pages... Not my intention....
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
LMyou should get a usb backup drive as well. time machine has limited use in my eyes. it saves things. but older things can be errased ad space drops without telling you
nothing beats data redundancy. 2 saves is. 1. and 1 is none
im personally not fond of time machne though i use it only for a recovery parameter for a mac
id never ever myself consider time machine a genuine data backup tool. though most do consider it as such
drive clones such as superduper and carbon copy cloner can clone your entire drive for emergency recovery. and you can boot from them as well o. another mac -
Time Machine Restore Mangles Permissions and Groups
Circumstance:
My Macbook Pro running 10.5.5 gave a gray spinner after a restart last week. The restart was to clear out a couple of system processes eating up CPU when I had left it alone for a few hours.
Action:
After Disk Utility, zapping PRAM, and the probably some other standard trouble-shooting actions didn't fix the stuck start-up problem, I decided to try a full system restore from my Time Machine backups. I had previously successfully restored individual folders and files. Time Machine backs up wireless to a USB hard drive connected to my AirPort Extreme. To speed up the restore, I ran an Ethernet cable to the MBP from the Airport. The restore completed successfully. All the folders & files are correct, looks the same, etc. I restarted using the restored boot drive.
Problem:
The MBP is like a museum now--I can look but I can't touch. I first noticed something was wrong after logging in the first time because I couldn't move a file into a folder via drag-n-drop. Then Terminal went into a spinning beach ball when I opened it. Spotlight was not running. Then I noticed that my entire boot disk was read-only. I got info on the boot disk, and the Users & Groups list was strange--everyone was read-only, "wheel" had read-write and was the owner, and staff had read-write. Basically, it's like me, the Finder, an all applications have lost all their write/execute permissions on the entire drive.
*Unsuccessful Steps Taken:*
Ran Disk Utilities' Repair Permissions from Leopard dvd. Ran fsck -fy after mount / -uw from Leopard dvd Terminal and from single-user boot mode. Time Machine restore direct from TM disk via USB. Joined my user to wheel group. Changed my user password from Leopard dvd (which repairs home folder permissions). Played with chown to make all wheel-owned items staff-owned.
*Open Theories:*
Airport Time Machine restores strips ACLs and Permissions. I have to restore over wireless, not ethernet or usb. My TM backup is screwed up somehow.
Whew. This has been going on for a while, so I'm ready to give up and do an Archive & Install and begin manual migration from the backups, but my MPB is a fine-tuned machine and I hate to lose that, especially since it taunts me by being so close to normal (I can see everything! My desktop background and apps are there!).
Any help much appreciated! The "full restore" from Time Machine is only for OSX drives.
For data-only drives, use the Time Machine browser (the "Star Wars" display). See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #15.
Depending on your setup, you may also want to review Transferring Home Folders not on a Startup volume. -
Hi, I recently started having some major operating system problems after installing the latest security update for OS 10.5.8 on my PowerMac G5. Im fairly certain that the download file was corrupted in some way because my substandard-expensive-archaic system that gives itself the undeserved title of "Internet Service" often loses bits of downloads and is generally very unreliable. Needless to say I decided to do a complete time machine restore. Thinking it was going to be as easy as it has been when Ive done it on other macs, I decided this was better than trying to fix the system issues (Which involved a repeated "There is no point for line" error about 45,000 times a day in the console logs, about which i could find no information). Anyway, I booted from my OS X dic and loaded time machine, selected my backup, and selected my destination drive and away we go! After about 2 and a half hours (which is to be expected with over 1,000,000 files totaling over 900GB of data) the restore finished....or so I thought. The screen said Restore Process Complete and the Progress bar cleared out but the restart button at the bottom of the window never showed up like it should. All I got was the spinning beach ball. So, thinking that the data had copied over and it should all be there anyway, I decided to force restart after waiting for about 2 hours for any progress. Upon restart I found that the newly restored drive was not bootable. Using Disk Utility on my OS X DVD I found that all the files were copied. So I tried it again, erasing the drive completely and then restoring from a backup with a slightly different time, and I got the same results. Any help would be awesome and ill be checking back to answer any questions about what info I may not have covered. Thanks!
PS: I looked around for a similar posting but all the ones I found were involving hangs during the restore process (IE: 64%) and I didn't see anything quite like this, so if this issue has already been discussed then sorry for the double post.It sounds like something in your installation of OSX was corrupted, and got backed-up. So when you restore, you're restoring the problem.
Your best bet is probably to do an +Erase and Install+ of Leopard, then use +Setup Assistant+ when your Mac restarts to transfer all your users, data, apps, and settings from the backups. See #19 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Then download and install the "combo" update, to get back to 10.5.8. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards. -
Time Machine restore and applications
I just purchased a new 320GB HD to replace the 120GB that came with my MacBook. Awhile back, I posted about an Address Book problem [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1712440]. I was never able to resolve it, and gave up trying. I assume it's some corrupted file somewhere, but nothing seems to work. Anyhow, I thought this might be a good time to fix it since I'll be reinstalling OS X.
So the question is: if I restore from a Time Machine backup, will it bring whatever corrupted file is causing the problem along with it? It sure would be great if I didn't have to reinstall ALL my apps and preferences.Pondini wrote:
Did you copy, or use Time Machine to restore directly to Address Book? I guess it's too late to try anything else now, though. And as posted earlier, if V.K. couldn't figure it out, it's doubtful anybody else can.
I just did a drag-and-drop of my contacts onto the desktop. Although it may have been smart to try using Time Machine, it didn't occur to us at the time, and any changes in the data has since been deleted when my TM drive filled.
Can I restore selectively from Time Machine? For example, could I restore JUST my iTunes library, documents, photos, etc. and then start fresh with everything else?
Yes, but that's more difficult than you may think. Here are the options:
You can restore your entire system from your backups in one process, per the previous reference.
You can do an Erase and Install, then migrate from your backups, as detailed in the *Erase, Install, & Migrate* section of the Glenn Carter - Restoring Your Entire System / Time Machine post at the top of this forum. The main difference here is, you get a fresh copy of OSX.
You could limit what you restore that way, but you can't "fine tune" it the way you want. You can restore your configuration and apps, but omit your user data, for example.
Then, once you restart, you'd have to selectively restore what you want, via the normal +Enter Time Machine+ interface. That's going to be rather tedious, especially for those apps that store their data in multiple files and/or places.
This is almost what I'm looking for, but the other way around...can I omit the apps but restore my user data? That should accomplish exactly what I want. I know it'll be tedious, but that's not the end of the world.
So yes, it can be done, and might fix your Address Book problem. But it might not, and you may introduce other problems by restoring things piecemeal. Great choice, right?
Well I am realizing that I will have several copies of my data....TM, a SuperDuper clone, and the original hard drive....so if something doesn't go right, the worse case basis is that I restore from one of those backups...and just live with my Address Book problem.....and cross my fingers that Snow Leopard will fix the problem. -
Update from 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 blown - Time Machine Restore blown
Hello,
summary of events:
Update form 10.7.02 to 10.7.3 went wrong
After Time Machine Restore no more Recovery Partion
Lost about what to do
On Saturday, I startet to update 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 on my MB Pro 15" (2007) Apples Software Update showed the combo update, and so I started download and installation. Just before that, I had run Time Machine on an external USB drive, so I was relaxed.
After about 2 hours, the update was still running with no progress. After another hour, I forced a restart. Not very suprisingly, after the login, the wheel beneath the Apple logo kept on running.
So I restarted from the Recovery Partition, selected my Time Machine-Backup from the external USB drive, selected my internal HD as target and clicked on "go".
While the progress bar showed progress, I waited. Then it seemed to be complete and the MBP restarted. Now I got a folder with a question mark. My heart rate did not yet accelerate, since I had a back up, right?
So I restarted again trying to boot from Recovery Partition - BUT, there was no longer a Recovery Partition. Or at least, nothing I could boot from.
What options do I have? I could get my hands on a DVD that contains an Lion installation from the app store, but that is not the most recent version, as far as I can tell. If I would go that way:
Does the version of the Lion-app matter?
Will it create a Recovery Partition?
If not, how else could I restore a complete Time-Machine backup?
Any help and suggestions are very welcome :-)
Regards
Jimbo
Naturally, I a am mad as **** at Apple. First, that they abandoned physical media for Mac OS distribution, and secondly that some not so bright lad thought it not necessary to secure the availability of the Recovery Partition under any circumstances short of phyical damage. This really *****, guys!Ok... I'm not sure if the following suggestions will work with Filevault 2 enabled. I guess you can try after you create a backup for safety.
You can recreate the Recovery HD two ways. One is to reinstall Lion using a bootable USB thumb drive of the Recovery HD created with the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant. Or from a bootable USB thumb drive with the Lion installer restored to it.
A second way, which I have used many times, is to follow the instuctions at this site using Terminal commands. Step 3 is what you want to follow. The instructions use the RecoveryHDUpdate.dmg file downloaded from Apple to recreate the Recovery HD. It works great! -
Hi there,
Before upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite I wanted to test. So I went ahead and clean installed Yosemite on an external hard drive, then I've restored all apps and data with Migration Assistant using a Time Machine backup.
Besides from 3 apps that lost their activation key during the process, all the rest moved nicely and smoothly. Everything was exactly as it was on my Mac. MS Office up and running, some Adobe apps as well, all working fine.
Although I've read that by doing a clean install, and the restoring a Time Machine backup, I'm actually not having a clean install, as I'm migrating all apps and data I'm even migrating bugs from the old OS.
Is it better then upgrade rather than a clean install and a TM restore?
ThanksYou seem to have already made the transition. As an aside, I think a "clean install" is a colossal waste of time (IMHO only).

Time machine restore not complete
I had to get a new hard drive for my iMac. Time Machine restored all the files and programs, but not the settings, so my desktop, my dock, all the pointers in software like Apature, etc are wrong. Why didnèt all this come back with the restoreÉ Or how do I get it back without manually setting everything up again.
Thanks
JeffThere is a bug for some users.. but not in Snow Leopard if you are using that as per your profile. It is Mountain Lion that is the issue.
See http://pondini.org/TM/D10.html
Did you Migrate or did you do system restore?
They are different. Settings will mostly not migrate.
See Q14 and start over to do a full system restore.

FCP X does not recognize projects and events on USB drive after a time machine restore of the MBP macintosh disk.
I upgraded from an i5 to an i7 15" MBP and restored my files using my time machine backup. All seemed to go ok, except I had to use the migration assistant because on the initial boot the MAC didn't recognize the backup database on the USB device. MAybe this is a hint.
Since when I start FCPX it too cannot finnd the project or event directories.
Before my upgrade, I had a choice of files either on the Macintosh disk or the 2TB USB disk.
Now only files on the Macintosh are accessible to FCPX. The USB drive is visible under events and project but it finds no projects or events.
Please help if you can.
Thanks
BarryThanks... alas no one has responded.
I think I have the structure that you are recommending.
I have a root level directory (Final Cut Events) with the files in them.
The puzzling thing is that it used to work before the migration!.
Anyway I'm going to move the contents to the root and see what happens.
On a slightly different note...
I also posted a question about CPU utilization. Can I ask a question or two?
While rendering a short clip, I noticed burst of disk activity when the render started (likely loading the media files into ram since I have about 4Gigs available, then almost no activity while the render is happening, then more disk activity when its done.
However the cpu activity is not as high as I would have expected since rendering requires a lot of cpu.
What is your experience? I know some render is done by the GPU, but in my older i5 the CPU was about 100%, now in my i7 its about 50%.
Please look at the attached utilization for CPU and disk activity.
Thanks for any thoughts... Barry -
Time machine restore selective intonation vs full installation compromised system
I have some questions regarding the above mentioned issue
I have reviewed notes regarding selective app restore method and am aware that there are issues assossiated with failed apps since the original app installer installs files in various libraries and system settings
My backed up Mac contains rogue programs such as the programming app python 3 and various rogue bugs and system settings.
1 Does a full restore reset all backed up system settings or does it keep the fresh installation and include all your apps and settings such as mail accounts mail folders documents pictures movies podcasts etc without the bugs
2 Should the answer to 1 be a yes all compromised settings will be restored, then will I have issues with installing VMware fusion as its an encripted integrated app that I keep all my master business applications but store documents in the Mac documents area.
Other factors
1 My accounting tax business has been hacked over and over again for the last 7 months from start of tax season
2 I have lost 50% of my clients due to the interruptions and been hospitalized twice from sitting on the computer for extended hours and days reinstalling fresh system and restoring Mac documents only, 3 times over, as well as trying to learn everything about best practice, hacks etc
3 I'm using fire vault 2 however the time machine backup is not encripted are there any potential problems with either of the two methods?
4 I will be using a proxy server when I next build the Mac will this be enough to mitigate potential security breach using the full time machine restore method?
5 I have many apps that I have not purchased through the app center and have not kept the keys and will be a headache to get all my details
6 what implications are there as far as the prior keychain access is consurned? How does that get restored?
What is the most effective and efficient method to restore from time machine given above scenario?
Thanking you in advance
PeterThank you for your advice
I tried consulting Telstra premium services and other third party security consultants. I explained my steps and procedures upon each fresh installation and the extent of the hacking and they refused to service me. Additionally Telstra security center replied on the issue of using a proxy server that they only support windows operating systems. Last night an apple consultant told me to obtain the proxy server address and he will guide me through to setting it up. I hope this will resolve the security issue. However I'm not entirely sure. My iPhone was also hacked and 8 GB of data used in 1 day untill I caught on. Freaked me out since I had disconnected from the wifi.
I'm currently installing from flash drive and transferring my information from time machine. I think it's a full restore.
I am investing in a website in a couple of weeks however I'm not currently hosting one on my laptop.
Cheers

Reactivate software needed after Time Machine Restore?
So I'm getting ready to upgrade the HD in my MBP and I am going to try the time machine restore feature (hopefully) to reload the new HD to exact status of old HD. From what I've read this is pretty easy to do. What I can't find in my searches is if all the apps on my HD will need to be reactivate after this procedure.
Once I restore the new HD does all the software need to be reactivated? I have a ton of apps that I have no idea where the serial #'s are and would be screwed if I had to reactivate them. Or does the restore to the new HD work seemlessly so that it's as if I didn't even swap HDs.The only 'problem' I've ever had after a restore was with the MS Office for Mac suite 2011. It required me to either re-enter my activation code or sign-on to my Office 365 account (I did the latter).
Never had a problem with Adobe products, though. I can't guarantee that you won't, of course, but I've personally never had a problem with Adobe products.

Time Machine restore fails from Snow Leo disc. iMac 24" 2007
My hard drive sufferd some kind of crash yesterday. I booted to the SL-disc and formatted the drive. I then verified it with no errors before formatting again - this time I told it to write 0´s. The drive verifies fine in disk utility. I go into the Time Machine restore dialogue and selects the latest recovery point and it goes to work and I go to bed. Wake up the error "the OS X install could not be completed" or something like that only in norwegian. I try again with an earlier recovery point, but after a few hours it displays the same message.
The only weird thing about my setup is that the TM drive is connected through my firewire audio interface. I am at work now and came to think of this little weirdness. Can this be the problem? I seem to remember having recovered before without this causing a problem. Any other suggestions? Is my drive really troubled even though it reports no problems after the format? It's hard to tell, but just to be safe, I'd connect the drive directly.
It might have been damaged by the crash; you might also want to repair it, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
When you do the restore, select Window, then Show Log and Show All logs from the menubar. These selections may require several seconds to take effect, but you can tell how far the process has gotten.
If the restore seems to get most of the way, but fails again, see if it will start up. If not, try installing a fresh copy of OSX. See what didn't get copied; you may be able to recover the missing stuff by restoring it selectively. -
Time Machine Restore with downloaded Lion 10.7
Hello,
I have a laundry list of questions, I hope you answer one for me, thanks.
My system disk has version 10.6.2 , and I'm pretty sure when I booted from this disk,
it presented a large icon saying it was 10.7, is this true or imagination?
Anyway, I had some sort of virus or other problem that forced the imac to keep
flashing the restore window modal panel, I couldn't resolve it by clicking on anything,
so I did a restore from a month old backup.
Questions
It restored the system to 10.7, because that's what the backup copy was. But,
booting from the disk and following through the prompts, it was asking if I wanted
to continue and instal version 10.7, (from my original system disk), how is this
possible? Or rather, this confused me, because I didn't have any idea what version
number coresponded to the latest Lion(10.7)
So I opted to do the Time Machine restore.
So, did I have to use time machine, or could I have continued with the system disk instal,
and gotten the latest version 10.7, AND not lost all my files since this last backup?
I lost some files, and I don't think I would have needed too.
So far it looks like all my software has been restored, and everything Mac seems to be working.
Parallels isn't quite working yet, but it looks close.
Thanks again for any info.
Your heart really does start to beat when the computer starts getting dodgy...How do I restore my entire system?
Regards,
Colin R.
