Time Machine restore does not recognize sparsebundle password

I am trying to do a time machine system restore from an encrypted sparse bundle. I have a mac with OS X 10.10.2 and the sparse bundle is on a time capsule. I rebooted with cmd+R and selected “Restore from a Time Machine Backup”. I was asked for the time machine password and then selected the sparse bundle I wanted to restore. At that point I was asked for the sparse bundle password, which however the system keeps rejecting. I am 100% sure the password is instead correct. To double check I restarted the mac and checked in the keychain, and the password is in fact correct. Also I could restore specific files from time machine without any problem. But when I try the system restore the way I just described, the system does not recognise that password as the correct one.
Can anybody suggest a solution? thanks
john

I think you will have to ring apple support and see if they can help you.. there is no easy way around this .. TM is simply buggy in Yosemite.. although encrypted TM bugs are not new. I think the same thing happens on earlier ones..
Re: Clean Install Problems With Encrypted Time Machine
The fix might be fairly long.. use setup assistant and use a different target drive eg USB and do a full install of the entire backup there. And then pick and choose the files..
For now I would avoid using encrypted backup.

  • Time Machine restore does not restore (completely)

    Hi there,
lately I did a "clean" re-install and later I restored all applications (only the applications, because I clicked "do not restore this user account" or something) backed up earlier via Time Machine.
Today I wanted to do a full restore of everything I backed up in the past, including photo's movies, documents, etc.
I tried to do that but it only restored my applications again and that's it...
I just try to restore the backup from my iMac where I backed it up from, so...
    I used the Migration Assistant.
    What did I do wrong?
    Any tips/comments are welcome!
    Grtz,
    Peter.

What I already did before I got your answer is restoring my complete system using the install DVD that came with the iMac. I didn't re-install OS X, but restored my system from the TM backup, via the Utilities>restore from TM backup, or whatever it says.
Good. (That's the procedure in #14 of the FAQ Tip, and step #1 of the second option I suggested.)
It seems that it indeed restored my complete system this time.
Ah, so your system is now complete, with all your apps, data, etc.?
If so, now it's fairly quick and easy to get a fresh version of OSX. Do an +Archive and Install,+ being certain to select the +Preserve users and settings+ option, per the *Archive & Install* section of the Glenn Carter - Restoring Your Entire System / Time Machine *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Then either use Software Update (as in that article), or download and install the "combo" update, to get back to 10.5.8. That's a combination (thus the clever name) of all the updates to Leopard since it was first released. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.
If this sounds familiar, it's step #2 of the second option in my previous post.
I forgot to switch of TM, so it directly made a new backup from the "new" system, which is normal of course.
Should I have switched TM off, instead, so it didn't make the backup or is that no problem?
No, not a problem. It's suggested there mostly to save space on the TM drive since TM will usually new a full backup.
At the end of your answer you mention NOT to setup TM, so, did I do something wrong again?
Again, no, you're ok, since you did the full restore and don't need to use Migration Assistant.
Well to check wether I still/again had the shut down problem I, as a test, selected Disk Utility (via GO>... in Finder And guess what: it shut down on me... Again! Aaagghhhhrrr!
Not surprising, since the full restore has you back to the same condition as before you started trying to fix that. The full restore was step #1. Step #2 is to get a new version of OSX via +Archive and Install.+ I can't promise the +Archive and Install+ will fix the problem, but it will get a fresh copy of OSX, preserving all your apps and data.
Can the LaCie d2 quadra drive have something to do with. I didn't format it like you suggest in point 5 of Frequently Asked Questions User Tip. Should I perform a re-format (and partition it in the mean time which indeed will be better)? Maybe, as you say in the Freq Asked Questions: it might conflict with Mac (???).
Doubtful, since you were able to do the compete reinstall successfully.
In any event, I'd wait until the +Archive and Install+ is done before addressing that.
Don't worry about your answer being late. My question was extremely early because I'm in the Chinese Time Zone (I work/live in China as an expat)
    Ah, that explains it!
You might ask yourself why I didn't go to an Apple Support shop here in China (the closest one for me is in Shanghai), but I don't really trust them... I've been in China for quite some time now, if you know what I mean. Probably I shouldn't worried, but there is also something like a language problem, too.
Even in the U.S., many of the Geniuses aren't very familiar with Time Machine, unfortunately.
I think you're well down the road to recovery . . . good luck!

  • Time Machine does not recognize my password. Can I change or delete?

Time Machine in my MacBook Air does not recognize my password. Can I change or delete?I'm connected to an auxiliary disc via a USB connection and power is present for both devices.  No Backup started after disc encryption and now the external disc drive can be used since the password I started with can not be used to unlock it.  Am I missing something or am I just out of luck with this external drive?

I had already done this to no avail.  I'm wondering if I'm confusing the password to unlock the external device with the password to encrypt the disc used after it was connected to the MacBook.  If so, there is no way I can recall a password for a device I bought a decade ago (pre increased security about identity theft, etc.).  So maybe the answer is to secure a new device.

  • After reboot my hd - i would like to restore my data from time machine but it cannot recognize the password

I Installed the OS X Lion at my computer and all the application double. After I called to Apple support the suggest to erase all the HD and start to install the system again.
After that I am trying to rescue my data in the time capsule and it does not recognize my password.
do I lost all my data?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • The time machine Icon does not does not show up in my menu bar

The time machine icon does not appear in my menu bar. The desk top icon for the external hard drive is green. I've checked preferances and the time machine is turned on and the box is checked that has the icon appear in my menu. I've turned off the time machine and rebooted and then turned it on and rebooted again. Nothing seems to work. I'm running Mavericks and I have an Intel I5 processor.

the box is checked that has the icon appear in my menu
Uncheck it and check it again. Any change? If not, see below.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • HT201250 Time Machine App does not start under OS X Lion

I tried to restore an item from my back-up, however the Time Machine App does not start.
I use the latest version of OS X Lion 10.7.5 (Build 11G63).
I used the work around by opening my back-up volume with the finder and copied the wanted item.
However, this is not the correct approach I think.
Does anybody have a solution to my problem?

Just the last addition to my question.
The modifications of the access rights took very, very long. In the end I cancelled the process.
Nevertheless, time machine now works correctly. As far as I can see it.
If annybody runs into similar problems. The solution is I think just to modify the access rights on the back-up volume to read and write access for everyone.
Probably OS X Lion added an undocumented feature to the time machine.

I keep getting a popup error message in Ical "server does not recognize name/password"  This started after they did the change to Icloud and extended our subcriptions.

I guess that the server name is incorrect, then.
    Did it ever work?
Delete the account, reboot the phone, then add it back and be sure you choose Yahoo as the mail server type. Everthing should then fill in automatically except your user name and password.

I just changed my  Apple Password and icloud does not recognize the password.

To change it on your iPhone you have go to Settings>iCloud and delete the account, then set it up again with your new credentials.  When you delete the account from your phone it will delete any data you are syncing with iCloud (such as contacts and calendars) from your phone but it will remain in iCloud.  Provided your are signing back into your existing account and not changing to a new account, it will be synced back to your phone when you sign back in.

Today I opened iCal on my iMac and I get an immediate error message saying that the "server does not recognize my password for my user name and says to make sure that it's entered correctly." I went to MobileMe in System Settings and everything was OK. I was able to see it on the MobileMe website but it still gives me the error message when I open iCal.

Today, I had this exact same issue. What helped was quitting iCal, deleting the cal.me.com password in keychain, starting iCal again, then entering it again in iCal preferences. It started syncing right after that.
People who don't have the cal.me.com password should check their general mobile me settings.
