Time Machine Restore Fails PLEASE HELP!!!

I originally installed Leopard as an Archive and Install. However, I was having performance issues and decided it would be best to make a backup with Time Machine and then bring everything back over with Migration Assistant. Now during the process of backup installation my computer snags up at the end on an iWork 08 file. However, I cant delete the file from my backup disc because of insufficent privlages (the exact error message is something to the effect of "the file cannot be deleted) Now, this wouldnt be a problem to restore everything 1 at a time through time machine prefrences>choose backup dic except for the fact when I try to bring my software back over that came bundled with the computer when I originally bought it. Specificaly im talking about Final Cut Pro HD: it ask for a product key that I dont have. Is there a way to regain admin privelages or a way to delete that particular file. Also, I have found my itunes music library but I cant find where my Movies,RIngtones, TV shows and Podcast are located in the FIle Hierarchy. If I need to manually bring my library over I dont want to lose purchased content. Where are these files located? If anyone can help me with these issues I would GREATLY appreciate it. I know it was dumb to do in the first place but I expected it to work and thus far its to no evail. I have a ton of programs installed that I have no idea where my install cd's are or product keys. PLEASE HELP!!!

Thank you so much for all the detailed help. I figured out the solution. To delete any file permanently in Time Machine you have to do this. Open up Time Machine Window. Select a backup other than the most recent named "today" (or something like that). Then select the file. In the upper Time Machine Window there is a cog. Select the cog drop down menu and you get some options. Click Delete permanently from all backups. This is the ONLY way other than fudging with the root to permanently delete anything from a time machine backup. Otherwise, you get an error message about how back up items cant be edited (same if you try to drag it in the trash). Then, I had to do what you said and actually use Utility under the Leopard Install Disc instead of Restore from backup within leopard setup or Migration Assistant after setup. This actually erases the current Volume and fully restores the previous volume. Im not sure why that file was holding things up but this seems like the right fix. Now, my fingers are crossed but I think this will fix the problem. Again, thank you so much erik for the help.

To restore from a time machine backup use Utility under the Leopard Install Disc and select a Time Machine Backup to restore. NOT Migration Assistant after Install and not the function after the install process where you choose the backup with your name,apps et. ( basically Migration assistant again but in leopard). You must use Utility from the Menu bar after the Leopard install disc restores.
To PERMANENTLY delete an item from ALL time machine backup-- Within the time Machine application Window select a back up other than the most previous one (why this is I do not know). Highlight the document and in the upper menu bar select the "cog" looking icon. The menu then drops down. Select *DELETE PERMANENTLY FROM ALL BACKUPS*. You cant do it through finder. You cant right click delete. You cant drag it in the trash.
I hope this thread helps anyone if they have a similar problem.

External Drive locked after time machine restore. Please help

I've restored my Mac OS x (10.6.8) from a time machine backup after reformatting the iMac's hard drive.
After restoring all my files the external drive that time machine uses is locked and I cannot seem to get it to unlock itself.
I've tried resetting the permissions on the "get info" panel without any success (Did a restart after every change- it just seems to go back to custom priviledges). I've also toggled the "Ignore Ownership" toggle on and off- again followed by a restart each time.
I have no idea as to what else I can do.
The external drive is connected by Firewire 800 and is a RAID 1 configuration using two 2Tb drives.
I don't want to lose my existing time machine files on that external disc- hense formatting it is out of the question..
Any ideas or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Unfortunately none of what you said was helpful ds store. **** of a lot of effort and risk to go through just to get the drive unlocked. It might work though.

Thanks for the link as that got me reading some other posts and I then came accross other variations of " a+rx" that work for some but not for others. Sounded a bid dubios to me, especially since I'll have absolutely no clue as to what to do if things do go pear shape.

Time Machine restore fail - best method to reinstall OS?

I've just had a Time Machine restore fail on me, startup gets to blue screen but no further. Also tried the next previous backup. Trying to decide whether to reinstall Snow Leopard on my not-quite-restored drive and then do the combo update to the last OS version, or whether to do a clean install (wipe drive) and then use the Migration Assistant to import everything.
I have a ton of software / plugins authorised which will take me an age to reinstall, hoping that whichever method will retain all the pref files in macintosh hd/library and user/library. That being said I was in the process of trying to fix my intermittent system freezes, it was happening at the last TM backup so maybe aiming to return to duplicate system / user folders is a bad idea?

Yup. See #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). Then you'll have to erase your OSX volume and install OSX again, since the transfer was incomplete.
Or, if the repair finds and fixes problems, you might want to try a full restore again (much less likely to have problems with transferred apps), but perhaps from an earlier backup, before the problems started. If that seems to complete normally, but won't boot, then just install a fresh version of OSX over the old one, then download and install the "combo" update and repair permissions.
Or should I try to mount the backup and manually pull off all my critical data?
Only as a last resort. You may have all sorts of permissions problems that way, and of course will have to reinstall all your 3rd-party apps.

Time Machine restore fails from Snow Leo disc. iMac 24" 2007

My hard drive sufferd some kind of crash yesterday. I booted to the SL-disc and formatted the drive. I then verified it with no errors before formatting again - this time I told it to write 0´s. The drive verifies fine in disk utility. I go into the Time Machine restore dialogue and selects the latest recovery point and it goes to work and I go to bed. Wake up the error "the OS X install could not be completed" or something like that only in norwegian. I try again with an earlier recovery point, but after a few hours it displays the same message.
The only weird thing about my setup is that the TM drive is connected through my firewire audio interface. I am at work now and came to think of this little weirdness. Can this be the problem? I seem to remember having recovered before without this causing a problem. Any other suggestions? Is my drive really troubled even though it reports no problems after the format?

It's hard to tell, but just to be safe, I'd connect the drive directly.
It might have been damaged by the crash; you might also want to repair it, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
When you do the restore, select Window, then Show Log and Show All logs from the menubar. These selections may require several seconds to take effect, but you can tell how far the process has gotten.
If the restore seems to get most of the way, but fails again, see if it will start up. If not, try installing a fresh copy of OSX. See what didn't get copied; you may be able to recover the missing stuff by restoring it selectively.

Time Machine restore fails to solve airport issue

I have a had a nightmare trying to reconnect my airport to our wireless network. I completed the usual sets (like buying a new Netgear router and creating a new network!) and all the usual PRAM zapping, plist trashing etc. All this in 10.5.6. I then read that there were tonnes of others with the same issues and so i decided to a complete restore using Time Machine to 10.5.5 (prior to my upgrade). I had had no problems at all connecting to the network under the old OS.
On rebooting in 10.5.5, the problem seemed to be resolved only for the connection to drop again. This leads me to the conclusion that I must have a faulty airport card. I spoke top Apple and they put me on to a tech at the local repair shop. This guy said that all they would do is a complete re-install of clean OS as "Time Machine does not restore all the files when it restores you drive. True or false?
My understanding is that my drive would be wiped and my old system would be restored to it. Has Time machine just restore some parts of the systems and left others in place???
I can do a clean install and I assume that I can re-install my apps using migration assistant, but before I do this, I'd like to know why a "time machine restore" (done using the Leopard Install disc) has not fixed my problem....shoudl I just go back and restore from an even older backup...?

This is most strange, as when I was restoring my old system from TM (to 10.5.5 where I had no problems), TM & the OSX installer was telling me that all the info on my HD would be wiped - clearly not. Since my wireless problem still persists, I can only assume that you are right and that a TM system restore, does not fix all and that I am going to have to do a clean install of system software and then hope that migration assistant will allow me to reinstall all my software...
The other alternative is "archive and Install". Is this better? My drive is partitioned (a system drive and an archive drive) - can I do an "archive and install" on my system drive partition and retain all my software without affecting the data on the other partition (it is backed up on TM of course...).

Time Machine Restore fail from Yosemite

Ok, so this issue appears to be multi-faceted so please bear with me as I try to fully explain what's happening.
I have a mid-2009 Macbook Pro with OSX 10.6.8, and I decided to give Yosemite a try since it was free. Before upgrading, I did a Time Machine backup on an external 500GB WD drive in case I wanted to switch back to Snow Leopard.
I did the upgrade, but wasn't very pleased with the results. Seeing as how the computer was older I figured it would slow down a touch, but what broke the deal was when I tried to run After Effects and had plugins - that never gave me trouble before - crashing. I decided to restore from Time Machine and rebooted into Recovery Mode. However, by accident I selected the External Drive with the backups as my boot disk. I quickly rebooted AGAIN and selected the Recovery drive, but the TM drive wasn't showing up when I tried to access it for the backup.
I rebooted back to Yosemite and found that the drive was not mounting despite lighting up and making spinny sounds. Disk Utility could see it but was unable to repair, so I used DiskWarrior instead. Everything seemed to work out ok and the drive was reading on my desktop as a TM backup. I rebooted AGAIN to recovery mode, selected the appropriate backup, and let the computer do it's work overnight.
When I woke up in the morning and checked in on it, I got an error message saying that the restoration had FAILED at some point along the way. I tried to reboot normally, but the grey screen of death would appear after a few seconds and I'd have to shut down.
I went back to Recovery mode, tried to access the TM drive, but once again it was not showing up! So I reinstalled Yosemite and was able to login to my desktop. The TM drive was still showing up, and according to a reinstalled DiskWarrior the drive was fine. I rebooted in Recovery, selected the TM backup, and it only took about 20 minutes before the restoration failed! This time the computer appeared to be wiped clean, with no OS.
Fortunately I still had my Snow Leopard install DVD, so I managed to reinstall it from there. However, now I CANNOT login. My username shows up but the password I've used for FOUR YEARS is constantly rejected. I can't even login to the GUEST account!
If you've made it this far, PLEASE HELP!!!!

Boot off the DVD again and under the Utilities menu select Reset password. Boot normally and test.

Time machine restore Fail on imac late 2012

Here.... my new imac late 2012.
Try to restore previous backup time machine of imac 27 mid 2012 with same OS mountain lion.
At the end of the restore fail.
Fail because when open user i have non email no folder on desktop,no preference settings.... nothing.... only apps on folder macintosh hd.
Help me.....

It sounds like you're selecting your internal HD in the backups and clicking the Restore button. If so, that won't work (unfortunately, Apple doesn't make that clear).
If you're trying to restore your entire system, see Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14.
If you want to restore selected files/folders (but not your entire home folder or OSX drive), see FAQ #15.

Ridiculous & grotesque HD crash and Time Machine restore failure! Help?

Trying to make this short. iMac 24" 2009 2.66GHz, 640GB HD, NVIDIA 9400, 4GB ram.
Bought used, installed operating sys from disks, then upgraded to Snow Leopard. All was working fine. Set up Time Machine and it made several backups over two days.
Tonight, for reasons unknown, came into office and screen was on (instead of asleep or screen saver) and fan going 1000 MPH--LOUD!
Cut it off, rebooted, would not boot. Gave me "No bootable device" msg. Booted with OSX 10.5 disk, did UTILITIES/RESTORE FROM BACKUP, restored from Time Machine.
When it rebooted, the gray apple showed up and seconds late a gray shade descended and a black box in center of screen says "You need to restart your computer. Hold down power button until it's off, then press powerbutton again." Says this in 5 languages.
So I did, and the box keeps coming back. Repeatedly.
So then I reboot from OSX 10.5 disk again, go to UTILITIES/RESTORE FROM BACKUP, and restore from ANOTHER Time Machine backup from the iMac 24" I'm replacing, also Snow Leopard updated.
Same result. Black box, "You need to reboot," etc.
***? Am I missing a key step in the full restore? Please advise ASAP as this is driving me batty. not only do I not know what went wrong in the first place (somewhere early on I ran disk utility and did all 4 of the repair/verify options there; all said HD was fine), I have no clue why Time Machine won't restore like I assume it's supposed to!
Please help me before I kill again!

You do not use migration assistant to restore from a TM drive.
You boot into your Leopard DVD and use it to restore from TM drive.
You do not need to do anything with your internal drive. Just follow the instructions.

Time machine questions. Please help

So, I'm getting rid of my laptop and switching.    I've had my time machine external HD plugged into my airport extreme doing backups.   Well, I just plugged it into the laptop directly and hit backup
So is it really just as simple as plugging the HD into the next computer and hitting "restore"    Is there any extra steps?   Will it come back just like this one is set up?
I'm nervous that I accidently deleted an older backup in time machine through the finder to make space for the new back up.   I hope that doesnt mess anything up.    This backup is only like 90 mb.    IS that cause it took previous ones so its only adding the new data since the last backup an hour ago?
I want to not include my movies that are in iTunes,    They eat up about 60 gb of space and my new computer HD will be smaller.   Is tehre a way to do that? I currently have the movies themselves copied onto the external.    But cant seem to get them out of my iTunes library.    Couple of questions regarding that..
    1. Is this a good idea
     2. Is that the best way to do it
     3, will doing that mess with my backup at all?
     4. How do I get them out of my itunes library to shrink the overall backup?
If my backup IS larger than my new HD, can I pick and choose what I want to put into it or not? Or will it give me message saying the backup is too large?
I know this was a lot of questions. But if anyone could please help I'd greatly appreciate it.

In order to do a TM restore, that means erasing the hard drive and restoring from a TM backup which will put everything back the way it was before, including the operating system. However, since you're getting another computer, don't go that route. I would only use that when restoring to the same computer.
You said you deleted backups via the Finder. Wrong move. You may have damaged your TM backup. Always better to delete from within TM.
If you're switching to a new computer and you don't need backups from different times, I would erase that external and create a new backup, or clone your hard drive using Super Duper or Carbon Copy cloner.
With the new computer, when you first log in, you will be asked if you want to migrate your data. This is the Setup Assistant. You should have your backup drive plugged in and imediately migrate your user account from the backup drive. You can also migrate applications (any apps installed by you), or just reinstall them after if you want a clean installation. You should have the option to unselect any data from your user folder that you don't want to migrate.

Time machine restore fails

I have a 2010 MacPro 6 core 24GB (Macpro5,1) and had OS 10.9.5 running fine until yesterday and have recently had Time Machine running for a while (at least from January) My BootDrive just stopped functioning as startupdisk and then on "restart" computer booted with another disk that had a generic OS 10.6.4 on it. The 10.9.5 was still listed as a potential StartUp disk in SysPref pane but it wouldn't actually; after several restore attempts, I have had to wipe it clean. I have checked both original (failed but now reformatted) boot drive and Time Machine hard drive and both are "OK" according to disk utility. When I ask Time Machine to restore the boot disk y, it chugged along copying a bunch of files, as expected, and then stopped with
****The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “0165XXB1-AXXX-4A61-84A2-XXXXDB9A8A00.rtf” can’t be read or written.
(Error code -36)***
(I anonymized the filename a little, X = digit)
So now I am guessing my back-up in Time Machine is corrupted somehow but the app won't tell me where or offer any other options. That .rtf isn't visible.
I am hoping I can re-install a clean 10.9.5 on the boot drive and then use some parts of the TimeMachine copy that are not corrupted?
I am wondering whether I stand any chance of restoring user info from the TimeMachine backup - like keychains and registration info on the apps (and apps themselves?) etc...(most important data is on other drives that are still unaffected)

What you referred to as my "analysis" was in fact a fairly neutral statement of events with one openly confessed "guess". I simply reported the alert provided by Apple when the restore stopped - incidentally a wonderfully ambiguous alert that did not help me in any way - how is anyone other than an expert to know the significance of one file? And if they do, they wouldn't post here, now would they:( Yep - newbie here, definitely not an expert, made no such claim - just came looking for some support.
Your tirade assumes that everyone who posts here must know the innermost workings of all the software that comes with a Mac. That's as valid as my assuming that everyone here has good interpersonal skills.
As a matter of fact I have indeed sold a bunch of artwork, and that after a successful career, after my doctorate, in the world of biophysics and biotechnology - your analysis of my capabilities leaves a great deal to be desired (aka there are other sciences than computer science). You do seem to have caught on, however, that I don't know that much about how to diagnose technical problems on a Mac.
Despite your apparent intention, you have helped my by considering restoring my backup to a different disk.

Time Machine restore failing with error code -43

I have an external hard drive with a 1tb partition that I use for my time machine backups. I am trying to restore my system and I repeatedly get "an error occurred while restoring from the backup time machine...restart"
I tried on several different backups, ranging from a few hours, a few days and a few months. All of them fail with exit code -43. Here is a sample log:

It appears that Time Machine needs to have it's preferences reset. Apparently it's lost track of the drive you use for TM and probably set itself to use the new external drive you were working with.

Old FileVault crashed my MacBook Pro, had to delete, reinstall and Time Machine restore failed. Trying to manually rebuild. No iPhoto pics, no iTunes music and NO DOCUMENTS found! Any thoughts?

Here's the ordeal. I'm running a 2007 MacBook Pro 17 inch with Lion OS. When I converted to Lion, I didn't have enough room on my harddrive to convert to the new FileVault, so I remained on the old system. Less than a week ago I reboot my computer because iPhoto seems to be stuck on "cataloging" my photos, though after days of letting it run, it doesn't do anything. After the reboot, my computer appears as if it had been reset to factory settings with all my programs gone, etc. I'm like, hey, I've got Time Machine, I'll restore it. After the restore is run, when I go to login, I get the dreadful error message, "You are unable to log into the FileVault user "John" at this time. Logging into the account failed because an error occurred". I searched the internet via my iPhone for suggestions and followed everyone of them, all the way down to erasing my harddrive and reinstalling Lion. So I get back into my computer and think I'm golden. I go to restore my computer via Time Machine and wham....I'm right back to that error message. I think, ok, I'll do it again. This time it messes us even more, giving me two login screens, one for the new Lion like before I restored the computer and then a second, as if it were restored, but unable to login. On top of that, I couldn't get back to the Command-R page! I thought I was really screwed! Well, I finally figured a way back, or maybe it was just that it finally decided to cooperate, I don't know, but I erased my harddrive again, and reinstalled again and thought, well, I'll rebuild manually by selecting what I want to restore from the Time Machine drive. I was able to get all my applications back and running, but to my dismay, I seemingly have lost all my iTunes music (except that which Apple has graciously setup to redownload now "thank you!) plus all my iPhoto's and even worse, all my DOCUMENTS!!!! Here I thought Time Machine from backing all this stuff up, but with over a years worth of back-ups I cannot locate any photos, music, or my documents on my drive to extract! Needless to say, I will never be using Time Machine again to back up my computer, I'll find another program or at least do it all manually. But my question is: am I looking in the wrong places for this files? Are they hidden under some unknowning folder that doesn't list it as music, photos or files? I can manage with the music, I can live with the photos because my wife has many of them on her computer and I have many uploaded to Facebook, but my files! My documents, thousands of them, many with information I won't be able to compile again, seemingly gone unless someone out there has any ideas?!!!
I even had iPhoto search the drive for photos and after hours of the barber shop pole spinning I cancelled the command for I figured it wasn't going to find anything.
If anyone has any suggestions, or if Apple, you are reading this and can provide some direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also - my battery has been telling me "service battery" for a LONG time and then it switched to "replace soon" som time ago. Can't really see what this has to do with anything but whatever.
That could conceivably explain all the problems you're describing. Replacing a Mac's battery should not be postponed since a failed battery will cause other problems to occur. It is also possible that its hard disk has failed, which means the information on it may soon become unrecoverable.
... my latest TM back up was from April 2014, can I just run this when I have rescued everthing and then it might not be as slow?
If that Time Machine backup remains intact, it may be the only viable means of recovering that Mac's information. I suggest you do not attempt to restore its contents to your ailing Mac.
Given that you are having trouble creating a newer Time Machine backup you should stop using that Mac immediately and have it serviced as soon as you are able. Do not take it to anyone other than Apple or a service facility authorized by Apple, for the very reasons you explained. If there are no Apple Stores in your vicinity search for an Authorized Apple Service Provider using the Contact Us link below. Use one of the options that appear under Contact Apple Support. The language on that page will be different for your location.

Time Machine-FileVault! Please help!

I have tried looking extensively on the net and here, but can not seem to find an answer that I understand or that helps. I am not sure what else to do and need some advice.
To cut the story short, I decided to encrypt my macbook due to some confidential work files being on there. I run time machine as my back up. From what I could see, it backs up the entire drive. I have since seen on line that it only backs up when you log out, I find this a little strange.
Anyway, I had some issues which caused me to do a full wipe of the system and start again. I restored from the Time Machine and when it came to logging in, it would not allow me. I re installed Mac OSX and then tried to restore from back up, it seemed to copy across 23gb of something but whatever it was, it did not show anything on my system.
I have 10 years of photos, music and documents on there and would really love not to lose it all, I thought I was doing the right thing by backing up etc
I have a couple drives, the actual time machine I individually copied stuff onto recently before using time machine, I am thinking about paying to try and retrieve that stuff.
Can anyone help at all?

To understand what's happened you need to learn how FileVault works:
Your home folder is stored in a sparsebundle disk image in /Users.
When you log in that sparsebundle is mounted as /Users/username
Because Time Machine excludes mounted volumes it ignores /Users/username
It cannot backup the sparsebundle while it's mounted which is why it only works when you're logged out.
Even though things are broken in terms of logging in, so long as you can find the sparsebundle file in /Users you can mount it and get to your stuff.
You're probably best off getting your machine to create a new admin user and use this working user account to locate and operate on the old account's sparsebundle. To do this you need to boot into single user mode and remove the /var/db/.AppleSetupDone file and then go through the original initial setup process which will create an additional admin account (and set itself up to autologin to the new account)
If this is not making sense to you then I'd recommend popping into an Apple Store for a Genius appointment if you can.
FileVault is probably best avoided unless absolutely necessary.

I have a 2.53GHz processor intel core 2 duo. 4GB 1067MHz DDR3 MacBook pro, circa 2008, and running Lion since 2012.
I have been backing up using a 1TB time capsule for the last 2 years.
Now I have just had a clean install to Maverick OSX10.9.5, but cannot see any files in the time machine pre-dating the install.
when I enter the time machine, the date bar on the right shows all the old backup dates, and will 'scoot' back to them, but all the finder window images are black, and will not populate with any data at all.
I've tried restoring from applications - that doesn't work either.
I have tried using the migration assistant and that doesn't see any HD prior to the clean install.

notebook to notebook migration help page says something about the source OS needing to be Mountain lion or newer, but does this apply to time machine back ups as well?
I didn't have this information prior to the update. boo.

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.

Time Machine restore failed repeatedly

I recently purchased a samsung evo 840 SSD (250 GB) brand new to replace my original 5400rpm Hitachi in my MacBook Pro 6,2. I went to restore the disk from time machine but I was met with repeated errors with the restore never going past 2%. I was constantly met with a message on how it failed, that i needed to restart my recovery, and listed were a bunch of com.app.blahwhatever lines. I finally gave up and used carbon copy cloner to get my system up and running. i verified and repaired the external drive with no errors. Should i re-do my system backup? I want to make sure that if I ever were to have a catastrophic failure, that my backup could get me up again quickly. I used the snow leopard disk the computer came with to access a recovery easily. I understand that my original drive has gotten old, but it doesn't have any signs of failure (errors, sluggishness, things needing to be repaired).
On a side note, any tips for a first time SSD user on getting the best performance from this? I hope not messing with TRIM doesn't impact the drive too much.

In the Finder, right-click or control-click the folder icon and select Show View Options from the contextual menu. In the dialog that opens, select None from the Arrange by menu. Close the dialog and try again.
