Time Machine. Restore multiple partitions in to one. Is it possible?

Hi. I currently have 3 partitions in my iMac running Mountain Lion but I want to clean install the OS and format the disk as just one partition.
Can I use time machine to back up all the 3 partitions and then restore all the data to the "new" disk as just one partition whitout loosing any data? I have 2 user accounts.Thanks

Short answer is no.
Since you seem to want to collect everything onto one partition, (and one user?) perhaps the best way to go about this is to start assembling all of your data from the various drives into one. Space limitations of the various partitions will turn this into process of swapping data here and there until you have a partition large enough to hold all of the data. After you've completed this, you should be able to create a new backup. (Also note that what I mention about will undoubitibly mean temporarly erasing your backup drive so that you have another hard drive in which to accomplish moving the data from 3 partitions to 1.)

I have two hard drives in it - SSD that runs OSX and apps and HDD with data, sound banks, music etc. I am using Time machine to backup both drives on regular basis. Now, I have problem with my HDD, it cannot be repaired by disc utility, which suggests me to format and restore the data. I hear grinding and clicking from HDD, so it is probably failing. When I insert new HDD and format it, how do I set Time machine to restore only that partition? I try to restore it, but it is automatically restoring it into folder "Volumes" on my SSD. How do I set Time machine to restore on new HDD?

My mac mini hasn't been reformatted for a couple of years now and is starting to creak a bit. I'm going to do a clean install of Snow Leopard from my OS disks and then use time machine to restore iTunes, accounts, documents etc.
My questions/queries/worries (delete as appropriate) are..
1. Will the time machine restore and 'put back' all 4 accounts on the machine automatically or do i select them from a list?
2. Will I be given an option of which backup date/time to select from (i.e a backup done 20mins ago, one an hour ago, last week,last month) or will it just do the most recent backup?

That's unlikely to help much, if at all. Your best bet is to find out why it's "creaking" and fix that.

If all you want is to restore everything, don't bother with erasing your HD and installing OSX. Just do a full system restore, per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). The first thing it does is erase your internal HD. And it restores everything from the backup you select.
If you want a fresh version of OSX, then erase your HD and install OSX. When your Mac boots up, +Setup Assistant+ will ask if you want to transfer your data, from the last (successful) backup. If you accept the defaults, it will copy everything but OSX. Or, you can omit some things, like a particular user, if you want. See #19 in the FAQ.
When your Mac boots up again, download and install the 10.6.4 "combo" update. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

Time machine restore destroys the recovery partition

I wanted to restore my Lion installation with a Time Machine backup. So I restarted the computer with cmd+r and choose Time Machine restore.
After the restore everything works except FileVault. I can't enable it and when I try I get the error message "Can't enable because recovery partition is not available.".
How can I fix this? The restore from Time Machine works perfect and all files are at my computer but I can't use FileVault. And when I try to reboot with cmd+r so will it get the rescue information from the internet instead of the disk. So I'm thinking that the fault is that Time Machine deletes the rescue partition or disables it in the restore.
How can I restore from Time Machine and later use FileVault?

Reinstalling Lion worked. First restore and later reinstall... maybe not as good as advertised but it works.
Pondini I'm evaluating TM as backup software so there was nothing wrong with the installation just I wanted to test to make a restore so the day when it doesn't work I know what can be done.
Sadly I'm not that impressed about Apples Time Machine at the moment.

On Saturday, I startet to update 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 on my MB Pro 15" (2007) Apples Software Update showed the combo update, and so I started download and installation. Just before that, I had run Time Machine on an external USB drive, so I was relaxed.
After about 2 hours, the update was still running with no progress. After another hour, I forced a restart. Not very suprisingly, after the login, the wheel beneath the Apple logo kept on running.
So I restarted from the Recovery Partition, selected my Time Machine-Backup from the external USB drive, selected my internal HD as target and clicked on "go".
While the progress bar showed progress, I waited. Then it seemed to be complete and the MBP restarted. Now I got a folder with a question mark. My heart rate did not yet accelerate, since I had a back up, right?
So I restarted again trying to boot from Recovery Partition - BUT, there was no longer a Recovery Partition. Or at least, nothing I could boot from.
What options do I have? I could get my hands on a DVD that contains an Lion installation from the app store, but that is not the most recent version, as far as I can tell. If I would go that way:
Does the version of the Lion-app matter?
Will it create a Recovery Partition?
If not, how else could I restore a complete Time-Machine backup?
Any help and suggestions are very welcome :-)

Naturally, I a am mad as **** at Apple. First, that they abandoned physical media for Mac OS distribution, and secondly that some not so bright lad thought it not necessary to secure the availability of the Recovery Partition under any circumstances short of phyical damage. This really *****, guys!

Ok... I'm not sure if the following suggestions will work with Filevault 2 enabled. I guess you can try after you create a backup for safety.
You can recreate the Recovery HD two ways. One is to reinstall Lion using a bootable USB thumb drive of the Recovery HD created with the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant. Or from a bootable USB thumb drive with the Lion installer restored to it.
A second way, which I have used many times, is to follow the instuctions at this site using Terminal commands. Step 3 is what you want to follow. The instructions use the RecoveryHDUpdate.dmg file downloaded from Apple to recreate the Recovery HD. It works great!

How do i see my desktop and applications after a time machine restore?

What a disaster.   For reasons I won't bore anyone with, I had to end up reformatting my iMac hard drive (internal drive, I7) to get my machine working again. I have had a daily backup going (thank goodness) with my Drobo NAS drive using Time Machine. Yes, I know Apple doesn't technically support network drives with Time Machine, but anyone with a Drobo (and Data Robotics) will tell you it works great.   That's NOT the issue.
I flattened (reformatted) my machine and reinstalled Snow Leopard. I then connected to my Drobo drive with Time Machine, and searched the most recent backups and had it restore THE ENTIRE MACHINE. All applications, all documents, etc. Took about 14 hours.
I also created the same account (I think!) that I used before when I installed Snow Leopard.    However, when I reboot, my desktop looks like a fresh Snow Leopard desktop, and none of my applications or documents show anywhere. Yet, I am sure they are there, because when I went to later restore one file (Photoshop CS5), it said "this file already exists, do you want to copy over it?" I chose not to.
I feel like it must be some permissions or account thing, but for the life of me, i can't figure out where I went wrong.   It would be a HUGE inconvenience for me to truck this huge machine (and my network backup drive) into an Apple store to talk to one of their experts, so I'm hoping I can get this resolved here with your help.
Basically, I'm stumped. Anyone got any ideas?

From your description, it sounds like you may have more serious issues than a simple permissions problemand that you are now dealing with a dysfunctional "Frankensystem." Nevertheless, it is usually worthwhile trying something relatively fast and simple before going on to more complicated solutions.
You have not indicated what remedies you may have already tried outside of the setup Assistant Tip, so I am assuming you have not yet tried anything.
I have never faced this precise problem before, but in other situations involving permissions issues, I have often had success doing the following:
1) Do a "Get Info" on the folder(s) with which you are experiencing issues. In your case, this is pretty well your entire restored drive, since the Applications folder exists at the root level. So go ahead and do a "Get Info" on your internal hard drive.
2) Click on the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the GI window and enter your admin password when prompted.
3) At the bottom of the window in the Sharing and Permissions section, ensure that your disk is set up this way:
system=Read & Write
admin=Read & Write
everyone=Read only
4) Click on the gear icon and choose "Apply to enclosed items" from the pull-down menu. Allow this to work through, which in the case of a whole drive may take some time.
5) Reboot the machine and log back into your home account. Hopefully, you can now see and access all the files that should be there.
If this doesn't work, your problem may lie in the fact that upon your reinstall of Snow Leopard, you created a home folder with the same name as the one you are trying to restore from your backup, thereby creating a big headache. You might have to repeat the entire reinstall/restore process, but this time creating an account with an entirely different name when you install Snow Leopard, and then deleting it after the restore from backup.
OR
If the total amount of data contained on your Drobo Time Machine backup is not yet prohibitively huge, I would suggest that the easiest and most foolproof solution might be to use a program such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the drive to a partition on a storage device of sufficient size directly attached to your iMac. You could then reformat your internal drive and repeat the complete restore process from the Snow Leopard install disk which should then yield normal results, i.e. a fully functional home account in which everything works as usual upon login.
This will eat up considerable time, but most significantly, it is machine time, not your time!
In my experience, the entire Time Machine process is a finely tuned one that does not take kindly to tinkering under the hood or straying from the blessed path, as you have just discovered.

Is it possible to boot or Time Machine restore from an external Thunderbolt disk drive?

(There are several questions - search for "?".)
I purchased a Seagate Backup Plus for Mac Desktop Drive 3 TByte with default USB 3.0 interface, and also acquired the Seagate Thunderbolt Adapter for Backup Plus Desktop Drives and Thunderbolt cable.
I do a redundant backup to the Seagate Drive using both Carbon Copy Cloner (nightly) and Time Machine (hourly) using its Thunderbolt adapter. BTW: One never knows when Time Machine will choke - see discussion titled, "UPDATED: Serious Time Machine bug on Mountain Lion", which I had; Rest In Peace Pondini (James Lewis Pond).
Booting from the external Seagate Backup Plus via Thunderbolt inteface from System Preferences -> Startup Disk:
I select the Time Machine OS X, 10.8.5 Startup Disk (Thunderbolt attached drive), click Restart, confirm my choice, the computer reboots, however, it reboots from the internal Macintosh HD OS X, 10.8.5, NOT the selected external Thunderbolt drive. The SSD drive was used as the Startup Drive, not the selected external Time Machine volume as indicated by the display free disk space command (df(1)) and seeing that the Macintosh HD OS X, 10.8.5 volume is mounted as root. That is very deceptive in that both the internal and external drives will appear in the same manner from a GUI point of view! OS X doesn't even inform me that it did not boot off the selected volume. This is the first half of the problem, that is, Is it possible to boot from an external Thunderbolt disk drive? In my case, the answer is deceptively No. Can anybody else boot off a Thuderbolt attached disk drive? Note that if I remove the Thunderbolt adapter, and attach the drive via its USB 3.0 cable, the MBP boots off the external Seagate Backup Plus just fine, as is expected.
Booting from the external Seagate Backup Plus via Thunderbolt inteface from boot-time "Option - Select startup disk" method:
When I restart the MBP using the startup Option key to select the startup volume, the externally connected Seagate drive ONLY SHOWS UP if it is attached with the USB 3.0 cable, not when it is attached with via the Thunderbolt interface. Can anyone else boot off a Thunderbolt drive with the startup Option key sequence? At least the MBP doesn't deceive me in this case - I know right away that the external Thunderbolt drive is not an option when connected as such.
Time Machine restore from the external Seagate Backup plus via Thunderbolt interface from the "command-R - Recovery Parition" method:
After booting from the recovery partition, I attempt to perform a Time Machine restore from the Thunderbolt connected Seagate Backup drive. When Time Machine attempts to present me with a viable backup Time Machine volume, the external Thunderbolt drive is never offered as an option. So I switch the Time Machine volume to use its USB 3.0 interface, and then Time Machine displays that drive as an option, and the MBP proceeds with the restoration as expected. The interesting thing to note is that while booted in the recovery partition via the Thuderbolt cable, the MBP Disk Utility may be selected, and the Thunderbolt attached drive may be operated on just fine. Can anybody else restore their MBP using Time Machine and the Recovery Partition via the Thunderbolt interface?
This is also a big problem for me in that I am forced to restore my MBP via Carbon Copy Cloner using the USB 3.0 interface, because I cannot even boot off that volume's Thunderbolt interface. Of course, the option may be that I could use yet another eternal USB 3.0 drive, boot from it, and then use Carbon Copy Cloner to restore the Macintosh HD via the aforementioned drive connected by a Thunderbolt cable, but that is less than ideal and not elegant, so I'm not going there.
Another side issue is that the commercially available program, TechTool Pro 7's eDrive, which I installed on the Time Machine volume, will not boot off that eDrive as advertised, but I won't got through those steps here, because that would be beyond the scope of this issue, however, I must say, It does not work either when the Time Machine volume is connected via the Thunderbolt interface, but works just fine when connected via the USB 3.0 interface.

If this helps anybody else make a decision about whether to consider Apple because of Apple's superior customer service:
Apple sells this entire line of drives right in their store, from 1TB to 4TB. I spent 1 and 1/2 hours, yesterday, confirming that the 3TB model IS NOT 100% Thunderbolt compliant. A MBP cannot boot, nor can it Time Machine restore from this drive, though EVERYTHING about the drive is normal.
Apple's South Coast Plaza store management had at least two responses to me personally about how to proceed:
1. Buy a different drive from another drive manufacturer, and to attempt to return the drive to COSTCO. A lead genius suggested going with GTech drives, for instance.
2. Wait for Seagate to fix their problem.
I told Apple management in the store that the drive is advertised as Mac Compatible (see picture) and that it is advertised as being a Thunderbolt drive (see picture). I pressed management that my purchasing decsion to get the best possible MBP Retina was based on the availablity of Inexpensive Devises (raID), and that not having this complete compatibility is a show-stopper for my needs, and that I wanted a refund. Their response? They needed to talk with "Merchendising" to see if they are on or off the hook for these kind of 3rd party assertions, and would get back to me.
I am not holding my breath.
Note: I do not hold this against the Geniuses that helped me, nor against the management I've dealt with, nor the upper level engineers that I've corresponded with through Apple Care - their problem solving skills were helpful - although I could have arrived at similar conclusions given enough $$$. (For instance, try a Lacie TB drive and see if that works - we did, and it did not work. Or, we have a different TB cable and a different TB adapter, let's try those - we did, and it did not work.) I blame myself for not doing enough homework before going with Apple's solutions.

Time machine restore help

I've recently been having issues with my early 2008 black Macbook. I ran the apple HW diagnostics and determined it is a bad hard drive. I went out and bought a new 500GB SATA HD, and attempted to restore my system using a Time Machine backup. I booted into the Leopard Disc that came with my computer, formatted the drive, and ran the Time machine restore. Everything appeared to go fine (took about 2 hours, no error messages). Any thoughts as to why this is happening? I don't really want to start over with a clean install, that's why I have Time Machine!

My computer originally had Leopard, and was upgraded to Snow Leopard.

Any number of possibilities. First, did you prep the drive properly:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Any brand new drive should be setup per the above because they usually are configured for use on PCs rather than Macs.
Second, depends on how you went about the process of restoring your system. Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine." Look for an article specifically about performing a full system restore. Also, see User Tips for Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.
What you saw was a kernel panic screen. Panics at startup may be indicative of a hardware problem. You might give this a try:
How to run hardware diagnostics for an Intel Mac
Boot from your original OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended tests for a minimum of two or three hours. If any error messages appear note them down as you will need to report them to the service tech when you take the computer in for repair.
Some "common" error indicators:
SNS - sensor error
MEM - memory error
HDD - hard disk drive error
MOT - fan error
To assure the problem isn't with your backup you might consider installing OS X by itself. If all is OK, then you can complete the TM restore using Migration Assistant.

Do I need to remove Bootcamp before Time Machine Restore?

Hello - anyone familiar with this scenario.
I have used TIME MACHINE from the very first day I had my iMac. So it was started almost immediately after the initial boot of a brand new iMac case I ever needed to restore my Mac to that initial Day 1 state.
That day has come, but it's now two years, and in that time I have installed BOOTCAMP, Parallels and Windows 7. That process created another partition, and created the required 'links' between my OSX and Windows via Parallels etc.
So my question is this - can I do a 'Restore from Time Machine' over the top of the new partioned set up of my iMac OR or will it be now totally confused because of the changes I have made to my system in that time, and do I firstly need to remove Windows, Bootcamp, and erase the partitions I created back to one.
So in summary - will Time Machine do this when it restores, or do I need to do it before I restore?
I also have a CARBON COPY CLONE from Day 1 too. Am I better using that instead - and if so, same question - will i need to remove Windows, and my Bootcamped partion first?
(My system is iMac late 2012 still running OSX Mountain Lion if that makes any difference)

You are using the BC Windows and running it as VM. There is no separate VM with virtual disk.

It is much simpler to run BC Assistant and use the last option - "Remove Windows". It is a bit cleaner.
"If the backup on TM which started on Day 1 has continued as you have made changes, including BC/Windows/Parallels, it has continued to backup OS X and partition information. I suggest you backup Windows using Windows Backup to a separate external drive formatted as NTFS, and also consider Winclone or CampTune for a OS X compatible BC backup, if you run into any issues."
As above, I am not bothered about keeping Windows or the BOOTCAMP partition, I want to resore my iMac to the DAY 1 status - when I did my first full Time Machine backup - which was before I created a Bootcamp partition or installed Windows.
I suggest removing Windows via BCA and backing up to Time Machine. You will keep you OS X intact and keep all your files on the OS X side.

Bootable Time Machine Restore Disks

My data protection philosophy is one does not need a backup system; one needs a foolproof and tested restore system. So I talk about restore volumes, not backup volumes.
I followed PlotinusVeritas' advice and purchased Carbon Copy Cloner to create a clone of my internal storage as my fourth restore disk. Great advice. I will keep this cloned volume offsite as a medium-term archive. Having used CCC for cloning I now use it for a different purpose. I do not need a bootable clone onsite for my emergency restores.
New procedure: Each Time Machine disk can be bootable if one runs CCC on them to prepare them with a bootable recovery partition upon initialization. This simple innovation avoids the need of keeping around a cloned disk with its recovery partition. My onsite, bootable restore disks will be up-to-date as of the last TM snapshot.
If I used a cloned disk as an emergency quickly-bootable volume, the changes between the clone time and the last TM snapshot would be lost. For me, this loss of data is not worth saving the few hours of TM restore time to get back on my feet after an system volume failure.
How might one easily create a bootable recovery partition without using CCC or other for-fee utilities?
P.S. Creating bootable recovery partitions on freshly reformatted TM restore disks should be a standard TM feature (a la CCC). I will submit feedback to ask for this change.
P.P.S I tested restoring from my bootable TM restore disk. I booted from the TM disk's recovery partition. I selected that disk's TM volume as the source and a freshly formatted external disk as the destination. It erased the target disk and then to my horror said it was erasing my SSD system volume. I powered the Mac off immediately. It apparently did not get very far because my SSD system volume and its recovery partition are intact and Disk Utility verified my system filesystem is OK. Whew! This is a major bug in TM. I will report it as well.

The logic of all of this is sound but for 2 or 3 points.
A: TM is designed to be a "click it and forget it" method of doing a simplex backup for amateur users, ......as such any complexity at all or elaborate nuances in explaining diff. in clones, backups, archives, active and static storage is mostly lost to any amateur who often has a "I dont care, its backed up" attitude.
B: You said---"This simple innovation avoids the need of keeping around a cloned disk with its recovery partition". Neat idea, but far from 'simple'. Nothing is as "frozen" and secure as a clone stashed in a firebox or safe as the prosumers and pros do.
Recovery partition isnt any kind of necessity, in fact the creator of SuperDuper didnt include and as I spoke with him never WILL include it for a clone option. Ive made clones for years without any recovery, and the recovery partition isnt needed 'in general'. If you upgrade a macbook Pro or Mac Mini, and stash the original drive (to use later to restore in case of selling it), you dont need a recovery on the upgraded internal larger HD, nor do you need one on a periodically updated CLONE.

Though Ive used CCC, Superduper for clones turns out more reliable, is more simple......however the entire statement of "how might one easily..........without" implies there IS something "more easy" than CLONE APPS like Superduper or CCC, and there utterly isnt.
You seem to be pointing at a "revolving secure clone" which elminates the "GAP" between a monthly or biweekly clone update/refresh.
Ideally you would erase and create a new clone of your updated system every 2 weeks or month, which would therefore leave a gap in data integrity and OS files and system changes.......
Autonomous constant data hub archiving fills this downside “gap” of HD clones, wherein which the worst that would be lost is a 2 week or one month window of application updates, or system changes irrelevant to your vital data.
I dont (however some do) care if I lose a system APP update, or a few web bookmarks etc over 2 weeks, I only care about important data I got, made, modified etc.

Time machine restore after crashed internal drive

The internal drive on my daughter's MacBook crashed. She had been using Time Machine during the school year, so we have backups that are a little over a month old. I am a bit confused by the different Time Machine restore methods. When I originally set up Time Machine, I first set up 2 partitions on the external drive. The first was an image of the system at that date created by Restore. The second partition was used by Time Machine. I installed a new hard drive in the MacBook. I then did a Restore from the external drive of the System Image. What is the best way to restore to her last Time Machine backup? I want to make sure she has all of her class notes and papers in the restored system. It appears from reading some of the discussions, I could have just done an installation from the install DVD and then used the Migration Assistant to restore from time Machine. Is this preferred. As her system was originally a Tiger that we upgraded to Leopard. I have been considering doing a clean install of Leopard and then a restore from Migration Assistant. If I do that, is it better to do the clean install of Leopard, then Migration Assistant, and then install Ilife 08? Will that bring over the programs she has downloaded? Is there software or anything we would loose from the by doing a clean install from Leopard and iLife08 that is bundled only in the factory install disks? I would like to do this the best way possible and am looking for suggestions.

that's up to you. the easiest is to restore from TM. if you are having problems with your current system you can do a manual restore but it's a lot more work.

yes. the easiest option is to do a full system restore which will restore your system drive. to do that boot from the leopard install DVD and choose 'restore system from backup" from the Utilities menu at the top. you don't need to install leopard on the new drive first. the drive can be blank.

Which one? If you used a Leopard Install disc, that's the problem. You need to use a +Snow Leopard+ disc to restore a +Snow Leopard+ backup. (Unfortunately, Apple doesn't exactly make that clear -- you are far from the first!)
If your system is not too large, and didn't take more than an hour or so to restore, just do it over.
If it's a lot larger, though, you can just install Snow Leopard. Your Mac should boot up normally, but don't use any apps yet. First, download and install the 10.6.5 "combo" update. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

Undo time machine restore

Hello, is it possible to undo a Time Machine restore on a new setup and start again? I had an iMac that I backed up to Time Machine and then bought a new iMac (May 2012). When setting up the new iMac I chose to install a copy of my old iMac from Time Machine. The new iMac is now a perfect copy of the old one..... only I really just wanted a totally fresh start. Can I undo this process so that I can set up the new iMac as if it is just a new computer and can this be done without damaging the backup of the old iMac that I have on my Time Capsule? Lastly, can I subsequently just take the photos that are part of the old iMac backup on the Time Capsule and save those to my new iMac.

iPhoto '11: Move your iPhoto library to a new location
If you’ve created multiple photo libraries, be sure to move only the library currently displayed when iPhoto is open. To move a different library, you first need to switch to it
If you start you iMac in Restore mode you can effectively wipe and reinstall Lion, fresh and new.

Time Machine restore password problem

I had my HDD replaced by Apple. Was running latest Lion OS version before the fault, and had fully backed up with Time Machine. Booting up the iMac with the restored Lion was going well. Had selected restore from time machine. Then i was asked for my password. I know 100% that the password i entered (several times) is correct. There isn't any possibility at all that it is wrong but my iMac will not proceed further saying the password is wrong.
As I can't get past this stage I cannot access anything including the operating system - I can't get to the desktop even without any data. So I cannot get to any Lion recovery partition either. Have tried Lion interent recovery but that simply hasn't worked. Apparently I didn't purchase Lion through my Apple ID - utter rubbish. I've tried every Apple ID that I have used and no records of Lion purchase in any of them - how the **** did I download it and use it for ages then?!!
I bought the iMac originally with Snow Leopard so have that install disk but it seems I can't go back to that.
Going back to the apple store is a real pain the proverbial.
I am happy to wipe the HDD completely and start over, with Snow Leopard then pay (again) for Lion and then copy across the data I need from Time Machine manually and/or thru migration assistant. So here's the main question: How should I do that - wipe the HDD when I have no access to the desktop? I guess I'm going to have to boot up using Cmd C or similar and then type in some code. I have no experience/knowledge of that code so any help will need to be idiot proof please!.

As I had a brand new HDD installed by the Apple store this was the sequence of events (slightly different from the original post due some new info):
1     The external HDD which was the original Time Machine back up was plugged into the firewire port.
2     Booted up (as normal) for the very first time to be met with a fresh installation process just the same as when you buy an entirely new iMac - setting up language etc.
3     During that set up sequence I was asked if I wanted to restore from Time Machine, I selected that option.
4     About 3 hours later, c450GB of data is seemingly successfully loaded from the Time Machine external HDD to the internal, new HDD
5     The only option I now have available on screen is to log in using the same password as had on my original set up (before the internal HDD replacement). The forgot password hint is available, and clearly indicates that I should be able to enter my password to move, but no matter how many times I input the correct password (and, just in case, all other possible password options each with all conceivable varieties of CAPS on and off etc.). Nothing is accepted. No option to go backwards (eg uninstall the restore or anything else), and no ability to get to the desktop.
6     Several expletives later....I decide the only option is cmd+R reboot, internet recovery....and this is the udpate from the original post....
7     I'm in the UK and I try doing internet Lion recovery at about 11pm UK time. Indications are this will take 4+ hours. The trick is, I have now discovered, instead, if based in the UK at least, is to try this at 6am (when most people in the US will be asleep) and it takes about 10 minutes!
8     That brings up a chance to recover the "OS X". Great I think, just enter my Apple ID....error: "This Apple ID did not buy Mountain Lion"...cannot proceed. Mountain Lion? Where was the Lion only option? Doesn't exist seemingly. (Q: has Lion internet recovery been withdrawn? If not how on earth does one get to it?) BTW, I cannot see any partition on the internal HDD with the Lion recovery.
9     However, with the failed internet recovery (inviting me to install Mountain Lion, if only I'd actuall bought that before, but no option to select Lion or buy Mountain Lion there an then!), what I do get is a menu option to "Choose Startup Disk". "Choose the the system disk you want to use to start up your computer". One icon is there...my internal HDD...BUT I see that says "Mac HD OS X 10.6.8" - what? That's Snow Leopard, not Lion. I bought my iMac (from new) with Snow Leopard then upgrade to Lion when that came out. On the original set up (step 2 above) there's nothing to indicate what OS is running. I just assumed that as I had Lion the Apple store would have reinstalled Lion when the swapped by HDD. Likely then this is not the case. V annoying Apple Store (Brent Cross, London!). Idiots.
I guess there's a possibility that my Time Machine restore won't work because it is a Lion based backup.
Not had time to do this next step yet but likely to be my only option before admitting defeat and driving to the store again...internet recovery, get to disk utility from there, wipe the internal HDD and load Snow Leopard from the installation CD I still have (phew). BTW have tried to cmd+C and boot from the Snow Leopard CD. No joy..just ejects. Doesn't want to know!
