Time Machine Restore on New Internal Drive

I'm getting ready to install a new 1TB internal drive for my iMac and trying to determine the best way to do my system restore. I have two questions...
Question #1: Should I use Time Machine to restore my data, etc, to my new internal hard drive? Is this the best way to accomplish this or should I start fresh and restore everything manually?
Question #2: I have two external drives. One is used only for iMovie Events (1TB) and the other is used for Time Machine backups (2TB). I use Time Machine to back up both the internal drive (soon to be 1TB) and the 1TB external drive (once again, my iMovie Events). If I use Time Machine to restore, can I restore only those files that were associated with the internal drive? I really wont need to restore all my iMovie events on the external drive.

that's up to you. the easiest is to restore from TM. if you are having problems with your current system you can do a manual restore but it's a lot more work.

yes. the easiest option is to do a full system restore which will restore your system drive. to do that boot from the leopard install DVD and choose 'restore system from backup" from the Utilities menu at the top. you don't need to install leopard on the new drive first. the drive can be blank.

Hi, i just installed a new 500GB western digital scorpion blue hard drive as my original 60gb was full. I did a time machine back up, swapped the drives, an started up using my original install disk (not the snow leopard upgrade disk). I formatted the new drive to OS X journalling, and then went into utilities, chose restore system from back up, and am working my way through it. i keep getting to the point where you need to select a destination, and it stops at searching for disks. I can select my time machine back up, but it doesn't seem to find the new drive to restore to.
Am i missing any steps, or could there be something else keeping me from completing the restore?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

How is your new drive partitioned and formatted? See the following:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

Time machine restore after crashed internal drive

The internal drive on my daughter's MacBook crashed. She had been using Time Machine during the school year, so we have backups that are a little over a month old. I am a bit confused by the different Time Machine restore methods. When I originally set up Time Machine, I first set up 2 partitions on the external drive. The first was an image of the system at that date created by Restore. The second partition was used by Time Machine. I installed a new hard drive in the MacBook. I then did a Restore from the external drive of the System Image. What is the best way to restore to her last Time Machine backup? I want to make sure she has all of her class notes and papers in the restored system. It appears from reading some of the discussions, I could have just done an installation from the install DVD and then used the Migration Assistant to restore from time Machine. Is this preferred. As her system was originally a Tiger that we upgraded to Leopard. I have been considering doing a clean install of Leopard and then a restore from Migration Assistant. If I do that, is it better to do the clean install of Leopard, then Migration Assistant, and then install Ilife 08? Will that bring over the programs she has downloaded? Is there software or anything we would loose from the by doing a clean install from Leopard and iLife08 that is bundled only in the factory install disks? I would like to do this the best way possible and am looking for suggestions.

All applications were "?" On the dashboard after time machine restore to new hard drive...what went wrong?

I used the cmd R option on booting the MBP and did a disk scan and it reported errors that could not be fixed/repaired.
So I opted to install a brand new 1Tbyte Seagate hybrid hard drive and restore from my time machine backup.
So I installed the new drive in the MBP...it stated that it needed to restore from the internet and I was treated with a rotating globe for about 10 minutes.
It then gave the normal restore options and I opened to format the new drive as a mac drive etc...
Selected the most recent TM backup from USB drive and pointed it to the new formatted HD in the MBP.
So far so good I thought....it said it was restoring....
waited about 4.5 hours and apparently it completed when I was out so I did not see any messages just a normal looking mavericks desktop BUT with "?" In the dashboard where all the applications icons should be?????
I assume something went wrong somewhere so I reinstalled the old HD and restarted TM and it's not starting to backup all 493Gbyte of disk whichI. Understand is normal after a full restore.
So...what to do now??? I'll wait for the 7 odd hours of TM to complete but how best should I proceed with the new HD etc...should I reinstall and copy mavericks to it from a memory stick and then attempt a new restore from the recent TMS backup? Or will this cause issues....
I also have an Inateck hard drive cloning device (brand new never used) so I had wondered if I should simply install the old drive and new drives into this and start the cloning mechanism? OR will this simply clone the errors that were reported on the old drive when it was in the MBP?
In short I'm not sure what to do for the best now and would welcome helpful suggestions as to how to proceed.

Last night after the new 493 Gbyte time machine completed. I once again installed the new drive and restarted the MBP ...waited 10 min for the internet to download the basic disk utilities...restarted the restore from TM and waited 6 hours...Happy days it worked perfectly and like a rocket...the old disk had a read write speed of approx 50-60 Mb/s the new one (hybrid drive) measures at 100-110 Mb/s...programmes open and close noticeably faster and it's better than when the MBP was new...
Apparently this new hybrid drive "learns" frequently used programmes and caches parts that improves start up time etc as time progresses etc...the MBP now starts from cold boot in less than 1 minute compared to 2 plus before...I know minutes should not really matter but it does improve the user experience. I should add I have 16G of RAM installed which does make a difference with Photoshop and Aperture etc.
Hope this helps others or at least encourages people to try hybrid drives over the much more expensive SSD option.

Time Machine restore on new Hard Drive and now my login password not working

I just had a new hard drive installed and they put in a clean version of 10.6.
I got home and used my TIme Machine to restore from my other computer. It finished, but now I am locked out, bacause its not accepting my password. I know its my password, the hint is the same as I have always had. It just won't work,
Since the repair place installed the software, I don't have any other disks to boot from. Does anyone know a way to fix this or reset the computer again? I don't care if the files are lost, I can copy them over later. I just need to get past the login screen. Thanks!!

Do you have any OS disks you can boot from? If so, boot from the disk, look in Utilities, and see if there is a reset password option.

Time Machine restore to new hard drive fails

This is on a Mac Mini (Early 2009), 8GB RAM, that was running the latest version of Mavericks. This all started when the 120GB hard drive began failing. The computer was running slow so I tried to repair permissions to no avail and also to repair the disk, but Disk Utility said there was a serious error and it was not able to repair it. As it was at nearly full capacity anyway I replaced it with a new 1TB drive.
I am using an install DVD from Leopard (my Snow Leopard disc is damaged) to initiate the restore. I've erased the new hard drive and formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).   I'm able to select my from backups on my external drive and it will go through the entire process of copying everything back (1.5 - 2 hours long) only to give me a message at the end saying there was an error and it could not restore the files. Restart and try again. (which I have, twice). My TM backups include 6 user profiles and go back several years (and OS versions).
I suspect there is a compatibility issue between the Leopard install DVD and the TM backup which is Mavericks.   I've searched through the pondini.org site for assistance but nothing addresses this issue.   I also have an iMac (late 2009) running Mavericks. Not sure if I can do something through Target mode?
I've tried restoring the latest Mavericks backup as well as the last one I had on Mountain Lion but no luck.

Well my day just went from bad to worse. Somehow I managed to erase the drive with the only copy of my backups.
I guess the good news is I get 10 points for solving the problem.

If you want to use Time Machine to recover the contents of one of its a backups to a new drive, follow the instructions in Mac OS X 10.6: Recovering your entire system. Note that you must select the "Restore System From Backup" option from the Utilities menu of the Installer disc to do this.
Also note that if you are transferring files to a hard drive to be used with a different computer, you should use Migration Assistant instead. This intentionally will not copy everything because some settings, applications, etc. are not compatible computer-to-computer. Migration Assistant will copy everything that is.

Boot your computer and immediately hold down command, option and R (three keys together). This gets you connected with internet recovery.

This process installs an OS on your blank drive. You can then boot from the fresh OS installation and restore from your Time Machine back up.
Note that you cannot boot from a TM back up.

Where are your backups (external HD, Time Capsule, etc.)?
It sounds like there are two separate sets, and you're not connected to the right set.

Hi,
My iMac is configures as follows :
- the internal hd contains the apps/etc
- my home path is pointed to my external usb hard drive (/volumes/hd300gb/users/danygeller)
Is working perfectly and time machine backs it up correctly...
NOW, I need to replace this hard drive with a larger one 750gb.
So, how can i restore Time machine to this new drive ? What's the procedure ?

Time Machine Backup to New Hard Drive

So, I bought a new 1TB hard drive. Now, I only need to backup SOME applications and some music and photos. Can I choose which applications I want to backup with Time Machine? And if so, how do I do it, do I just back it up, replace the hard drives and put the Mac OS X disk in and back up, right?

Naming it the same tends to make things easier. Time Machine can backup your entire OS as long as you haven't excluded anything in System Preferences/Time Machine/Options.
Another option is to make a bootable clone. You should have more than one backup on 2 different drives since hard drives do fail.

Time Machine restore to new computer

My iMac G5 has completely failed, and I am getting a new iMac Core2Duo. As the old computer is dead, I won't be able to use migration assistant to copy my stuff from the old computer. So I will need to restore my files from the Time Machine back-up.
Slightly worried because I'm moving from a PowerPC to Intel machine.
Any tips or ideas? I know I will need to go through the install DVD to initiate the restore process.
Any help would be really useful!

I was just going to make a post myself but thought perhaps I could do it as a reply to this post.
I have had the same issue and ... Time Machine doesn't work. Apple Care has been pretty much useless in solving my problem. Background: 6 month old 24' iMac, I'm doing a software update and the OS update (10.5.6) fails. System resources are corrupted so I have to do an OS reinstall. Except that doesn't work. Bad file system. Only fix is to wipe the disk and reinstall. That doesn't work, Apple replaces the hard drive "bad firmware". Hmm.. So I go to restore from Time Machine - the restore won't work either from the new install or the migration assistant. The symptom is that the Time Machine app can see the external hard drive, knows it's a time machine disk, but says no system is present. I don't get the list of folders (dates) I'm supposed to get at the various restore points. The Time Machine disk is fine. I can use the finder and see all the files and folders. I can do the painful drag and drop restore. I'll have to reinstall apps from scratch but the data is there. I've deleted the interrupted backup, deleted the "Latest" folder, done a variety of stuff Time Machine tech support has suggested. It just doesn't work. No explanation. I've got a good Time Machine backup and essentially a new machine and no-go.
What I would do is make a back up of your time machine disk. I would get another disk and do a drag and drop copy of the data you care about. Make a backup of the backup in other words. Then use the Time Machine restore function to selectively restore folders.
What I think is happening here is that despite the assertion that Time Machine is a simple incremental backup, I think that there are ties between the source and the target at the system level. In my case I had a more complex file system than usual, multiple user accounts, and probably a corrupted OS that migrated itself onto the time machine volume. I think Time Machine is looking to the system files somewhere on the Time Machine disk and if those are corrupted your Time Machine disk as a source for a full restore is useless.
I'll probably make a separate post on this so sorry in advance on that but if anyone has any ideas on how I can solve this and help the original poster Mr. Tanner avoid this, it would be great. Maybe a Time Machine system engineer is reading and can offer some help. I live in San Jose and I'm happy to bring my Mac and Time Machine disk over to Cupertino....

Backing up images on external hard drive and restoring to new internal driv

I recently purchased a new external hard drive and a new internal hard drive. Before installing the new internal drive, I backed up the old internal drive on the external drive. Then I installed the new internal drive to my Macbook Pro. However, when I tried to access and print my Aperture images on the new internal drive, I received an error message saying "versions with unavailable master images cannot be printed." I clicked on 'show referenced files," but couldn't determine how to recover my master images. I checked the forum and under "referenced files go offline after restore from a backup" it said to go to "File>manage referenced files" but nothing else. How can I recover my master images? Please help - I have nearly 6000 images that are lost without recovering the master images. And no, I was ultra stupid in not placing everything in a vault = but I'm relatively new to Mac OS and thought a backup would be sufficient. Thank!

The volume name of the new hard drive needs to be the same as the old hard drive - rename it if you have to - then they should be fine.
If you cannot seem to make this work then you will have to reconnect them with locate referenced files under the file menu. Select all the files that are disconnected before going into the dialog.

Hi, I switched from PC to Mac. I bought a Lacie Network Space 2 (network hd) in an apple store (turns out it's NOT an apple store, it's an apple premium reseller according to the 90 days free telephone support guy, and apple's policy is then: you should have bought a 'time capsule' then.) That doesn't help me now. So I'm hoping some of you might have had this or similar trouble before. The Lacie drive is able to back up my macbook through time machine. It recognizes the drive and it does my backups on a time machine enable share on the hard drive. So I thought it worked like a charm. Until i wanted to go back to a previous date and restore all my data. I read you gotta start from the mac os install dvd and choose the restore option in utility. It recognizes the lacie harddrive. But when i want to connect to it it will say connection failed! I tried this over wifi (the hard drive connect to my linksys router with ethernet cable) and i tried this with the hard drive directly connected to the macbook with ethernet cable. It always finds the harddrive but when i want to connect to it to choose a previous date to restore, i can't even get there because it will say the connection failed. I'd really appreciate some help, because I tried to go on support pages and look up an answer, called apple, but can't really figure out what's wrong. So it can backup, it can restore single or multiple files in time machine, but it can't restore the whole OS when used with the install disc? Also made a dmg file with disk utility, but this one doesn't recognize the network drive. Finder does however. Any tips? Any at all, please?

Whatever the +LaCie UI+ is, that's probably why you can't do the full restore. That may be doing the equivalent of the Terminal command, to "fool" Time Machine into thinking it's backing-up to a supported destination. But you can't do that when booted from your SL Install disc, so Time Machine can't find the network drive.

Yes, that's likely for the same reason.
BUT I didn't know about *migration manager*. So the option of installing mac osx again and then creating another user and using the migration assistant, that DOES recognize the time machine backups, will surely work.

It would be nice to skip the extra step of having to install the OS first, but this will definitely be a valid option to restore. So for now i'll mark this item solved.
Let us know how it turns out.
If anyone has even a speedier, better option to backup and restore a total disc image (or time machine backup), please let me know.
The time involved is probably about the same; it's just in two steps instead of one.
And there's only one step if you use a "supported" destination: Disks that can be used with Time Machine.
