Time Machine Restore; QuickTime no longer works.
The HDD on my mid-2011 27" iMac was on its last leg (unfortunately not part of the HDD replacement) so I took it in to Apple to have it replaced. They noted that I would need to do a restore from Time Machine to get my machine back to spec, which I did.
Unfortuantely QuickTime did not seem to make it through; the icon is broken and when I open it to try and play anything the application crashes. I do not have any problems playing video via iTunes
I get the following results from the error report:

Do you have a Mavericks image available?
Get it and have it ready.
You need to use a Finder window to 'Open Package Contents' and get into the Mavericks Install app. Once in, go to the Shared Support folder and inside that is an InstallESD.dmg.
Click on that to mount the OS packages.
Once it's mounted a window should open with a single Packages folder in it. In these are the various OS bits.. Now you need to get the tool to install the bits you need.
This is where Pacifist 3.2.2 (it's shareware but you can use it for free - I cannot say enough of how great this program is, it has saved my skin more times than I can count) comes in.
http://www.charlessoft.com
Using Pacifist, point it at the OSX installer image. Open and you'll see the Packages. Point Pacifist to the Essentials.pkg file.
Let Pacifist read the package and it will present you with a Contents of Essentials - and in the Applications folder will be the QuickTime Player app.
Select that and go up to the Install arrow at the top of the Pacifist window and have it install the player and all it's associated files will be put in as they are supposed to be.
I have re-installed many apps with this tool and they all work perfectly.
Good luck!

Time Machine over wireless no longer working
First time posting, so please forgive if I have not followed proper protocol.
I am using 2010 MacBook Pro running OSX 10.6. The MBPro's Time Machine is no longer able to back up. I am using an external HD that is connected directly via USB2 to a MacMini (BTW, Time Machine is working fine on the MacMini). Both the MacMini and the MacBook Pro are connected wirelessly to the router.
I get the following error message whenever Time Machine attempts to backup:
"The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk. The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem perists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."
1. On the MBPro when Time Machine attempts the backup, I can see the 'Time Machine Backups' drive mounted on the desktop .
2. On the MBPro, using Finder I can open/explore the Ext HD connected to the MacMini.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you.HI,
Try repairing disk permissions...
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Restored Aperture from Time Machine backup. No longer works :(
I have a late 2007 Aluminum iMac with a 500gb hard drive which decided to go about 2 weeks ago. I had apple care put a new one in. Everything works well except Aperture. If I try to launch the application it immediately comes back with a window saying that, "The application Aperture quit unexpectedly." If I click Relaunch a few times it prompts a Reset and Relaunch which does nothing. I have recently received 4gb of ram from crucial which doesn't work when all 4gb are installed but I am currently running 3gb and it works fine. (I have one gig of apple installed ram and a 2gb stick from crucial) Could the extra gig of ram be the issue? I am tempted to delete the program and reinstall it but I am not sure if that will also delete my 6,000 photos :/
Any ideas?I would first try deleting the preference file.
username/library/preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist
If that didn't work I'd try a re-install.
Deleting the app should not affect the library, but is it not backed up in a "vault" anyway.
Don't really know if the ram could be an issue. -
Mountain Lion Server Web Server not working after time machine restore
Our Mountain Lion Server (mac mini) lost its drive yesterday. We got a new mac mini and did a time machine restore. Everything in the Server seems to be working (users, groups, file shares, etc) except for the web server.
Trying to connect to the server results in safari not being able to connect to the server. Even just clicking on the "view server website" link in the Server app doesn't work.
We've tried stopping / restarting the services. We have confirmed that the files in Library / Server with the web pages were restored.
Are there any gotchas, troubleshooting steps or guides anyone can point me to? I'd like to get our wiki back.
Thanks

Log-ins don't work after an OS X Leopard Time Machine restore
I upgraded the RAM and HDD on a Santa Rosa MacBook and then did a Time Machine restore from my old iMac G5 Time Machine backup. Everything seemed to go well but afterwards my login and admin passwords were no longer accepted. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks.Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.) -
OS X Restore with Time Machine via LAN does not work
Hi all,
i did a full backup of my mac mini with mountain lion on a time capsule via LAN. Tried to do a full restore on a new hard disk and connect to the time capsule after i booted into a restore environment. I was able to choose the time capsule as the restore source and connected using my dedicated backup user, which was also used to create the backup before. But after i cannot chose my just created backup!
Using a local USB disk with time machine everythings workes fine. But the main reason why i chosed time capsule is, that i can make my backups of all the used mac books and minis via LAN / WLAN...
So, is there anybody else experiancing this Problem?
Regards,
DavidHi,
tested OS X Restore with Time Machine via QNAP NAS Box - working without any problem. So with the Time Capsule it might be firmware problem?!
Will update thies Thread when i've any news...

ILife Apps will not work after Time Machine restore
I just did a clean install of Leopard, and restored my user account from my Time Machine backup. All applications work except for iLife 09 apps.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm desperate. iPhoto has all my photos (photo library still in Pictures folder).
This is my first time doing this, you would think as seamless as Apple is their iLife apps would at least work!!How did you restore your user account? Could you outline what you did, step by step?

Update from 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 blown - Time Machine Restore blown
Hello,
summary of events:
Update form 10.7.02 to 10.7.3 went wrong
After Time Machine Restore no more Recovery Partion
Lost about what to do
On Saturday, I startet to update 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 on my MB Pro 15" (2007) Apples Software Update showed the combo update, and so I started download and installation. Just before that, I had run Time Machine on an external USB drive, so I was relaxed.
After about 2 hours, the update was still running with no progress. After another hour, I forced a restart. Not very suprisingly, after the login, the wheel beneath the Apple logo kept on running.
So I restarted from the Recovery Partition, selected my Time Machine-Backup from the external USB drive, selected my internal HD as target and clicked on "go".
While the progress bar showed progress, I waited. Then it seemed to be complete and the MBP restarted. Now I got a folder with a question mark. My heart rate did not yet accelerate, since I had a back up, right?
So I restarted again trying to boot from Recovery Partition - BUT, there was no longer a Recovery Partition. Or at least, nothing I could boot from.
What options do I have? I could get my hands on a DVD that contains an Lion installation from the app store, but that is not the most recent version, as far as I can tell. If I would go that way:
Does the version of the Lion-app matter?
Will it create a Recovery Partition?
If not, how else could I restore a complete Time-Machine backup?
Any help and suggestions are very welcome :-)
Regards
Jimbo
Naturally, I a am mad as **** at Apple. First, that they abandoned physical media for Mac OS distribution, and secondly that some not so bright lad thought it not necessary to secure the availability of the Recovery Partition under any circumstances short of phyical damage. This really *****, guys!Ok... I'm not sure if the following suggestions will work with Filevault 2 enabled. I guess you can try after you create a backup for safety.
You can recreate the Recovery HD two ways. One is to reinstall Lion using a bootable USB thumb drive of the Recovery HD created with the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant. Or from a bootable USB thumb drive with the Lion installer restored to it.
A second way, which I have used many times, is to follow the instuctions at this site using Terminal commands. Step 3 is what you want to follow. The instructions use the RecoveryHDUpdate.dmg file downloaded from Apple to recreate the Recovery HD. It works great! -
Apple Modem will not answer after Time Machine Restore
After restoring from a Time Machine backup the Apple External Modem no longer answers incoming [fax] calls. I verified all modem/fax settings - they are good and the same as before the restore. The Modem Status in the Menu Bar doesn't indicate "ringing..." when the line is ringing and the Fax no longer answers.
Opening the Console I see these errors repeating endlessly-
9/15/08 10:09:10 AM com.apple.service_helper[1271] com.apple.efax: Already loaded
9/15/08 10:09:10 AM [0x0-0x15015].com.apple.systempreferences[155] No matching processes were found
9/15/08 10:09:27 AM com.apple.efax[1274] /usr/bin/fax: line 537: cd: /var/spool/fax: No such file or directory
I believe the fax app is supposed to create this dir, but I created the dir in /var/log/ as follows:
drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 68 Sep 15 10:33 fax
Makes no difference, rebooted, still makes no difference, ran disk utility to see if it would change permissions, no it didn't - still getting the errors, so there's something else that's also missing after a restore, or the error message is erroneous since the dir now exists.
It appears a Time Machine Restore - doesn't restore all that's needed for the fax subsystem to work. I thought the restore was supposed to completely restore the volume to previous operating state?
Any help on this would be great, I now have no incoming FAX - one of the main jobs of this Mini - thx - KRBy the way, it's running OS X 10.5.4

Need to re-authorize iTunes after Time Machine restore -bug?-
After a ganked iTunes/Quicktime update I had to use Time Machine to restore my Mac.
After trying to re-sync my iPod with iTunes I was informed that this machine was no longer authorized despite it being the same machine.
I had to re-authorize the machine through iTunes and now have 2 authorized Macs even though it's the same machine and I can't de-authorize the "old version" since it just de-authorizes what you're using i.e. the "new version"
My worry is that if I have to carry out further Time Machine restores then my 5 authorized slots will fill up and then I'll have to de-authorize all computers which you can only do once a year.
Has anyone experienced anything similar and I assume this is a bug?Yes I've seen that and yes, it's a case of sending Mac OS X Feedback .

Older MB (Core Duo [not '2']) Time Machine restore issues
The hard drive in a family-member's MacBook died and I'm trying to find the path to restoration. Regular Time Machine backups were made right up to the point of failure. I've installed a "new" drive in the MacBook (an Apple-sourced drive which formerly lived in a Mac Mini) and attempted to use the utility functions on the Snow Leopard install disk but have had no luck.
Note that this is a "Core Duo" MacBook. Not a "Core 2 Duo" machine. It cannot run Lion due to the hardware limitations enforced by Apple.
The MacBook had been updated to the latest versions of software on a regular basis. I think that the O/S version may have reached the point where the TIme Machine backups are in the "new" format where the Snow Leopard disk utilities cannot be used to restore the backup and only the Lion utilities work. (I just went through this with my MB Air.)
I have tried using a Lion install disk to run the restore but receive the "No Entry"/"Banned" symbol at boot. This makes sense as the MB is beneath the minimum hardware requirements for Lion.
When I first tried the old Mini drive in the MacBook, it booted up just fine to the Mini's condition 3 years ago. Surprising and encouraging.
I then booted from the Snow Leopard DVD and ran the Time Machine restore utility to restore the most recent backup to the newly-installed HD. All seemed to go well. The restore completed but on restart, the system hung in the gray-screen/apple-logo/spinning-gear in perpetuity. I tried restoring the second and third eldest backups with the same result.
In order to verify the health of the HD, I used the Snow Leopard disk to erase the drive. Then I installed a fresh copy of Snow Leopard. And then I patched it up to current standards.
So. Now I have a squeaky-clean new install of Snow Leopard on a MacBook (Core Duo, which cannot run Lion), a dated Snow Leopard installation DVD in hand, a solid series of dutifully-recorded Time Machine backups on a Time Capsule, and no freaking clue of where to go from here.
Everything I've read online seems to be based on the assumptions that I can a) use the older utilities on the Snow Leopard disk to install Time Machine backups made under a version of Snow Leopard compatible with the disk utility, or b) I can boot up using Lion installation media (USB or DVD pulled from the DMG in the downloaded Lion app-store installation app) and restore the "late model" Time Machine backup to the hard drive.
Has Apple just f'd me over? This computer is used by my college-student child and I would appreciate any suggestions.
A bit about me: I'm an IT professional -- a DBA -- who is by no means a Mac expert. After years of Windows machines, I returned to the Mac fold 4 years ago after a 14-year absence.
I could really use a good piece of solid advice at this point.
Thanks,
- EricIt sounds like it's working perfectly. With Fusion I don't believe it is backed up, I know for sure Windows isn't. You may want to contact Pondini to ask about Fusion. As for your Adobe apps you can thank Adobe for that, you will need to re-install the apps, I believe this is one way Adobe ensures users aren't violating their licensing. I believe you will need to manually install the Adobe apps which shouldn't be a big deal as long as you have licensed software. Your data should have come over smoothly and frankly that's the most critical part. Reinstalling some apps should not be a problem.
I'd recommend looking over Pondini Time Machine Tips and if need be contacting Pondini directly (he has a contact section on the page) he has a lot of experience with TM and as you have already seen migrating Macs. He can provide much more information than me. -
Problem after Time Machine restore
So i just did a time machine restore since i replaced the HD in my old macbook, and whenever i start up the machine it stays at grey screen and eventually pulls up a folder with a ? mark. But if I hold down option at start up and select the drive, it boots fine, even if i do a restart from start up settings in system preferences it works fine. Just if I'm booting after shut down, it won't work without holding option key, Is there something I did wrong, or anyway I could fix it?
Are the specs for the replacement drive, especially for power consumption, similar to those for the original drive? If not, it may be that new drive takes too long to spin up from a cold start or some similar, specification related issue is causing this problem.
You also should make sure that the partition scheme of the drive is not MBR & that the file format of the startup volume is "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)." Disk Utility will tell you both of these characteristics when you select the drive & the volume respectively from the list on the left. (Look at the bottom of the window for this info.)
You can also try resetting PRAM & then reselecting the startup disk in the system preference. -
Time Machine Restore - Empty Postgres Databases
Hello,
i just had to restore Lion Server and have a problem with it now. All files are back, but my the databases are completely empty.
I have a dumpall.psql file, but i dont see how to get it back into the postgres database. I know how to deal with mysql, but this seems completely different to it.
I also have PgAdmin installed and can connect to the database.
Can someone point me the right way please?
Another Problem i have is, that the server seems to forget my password. Everytime i try to login with my main user, the password field shakes. I am a 100 % sure it is the right password. I can only login with a second admin account. When i do a restore from an Open Directory Backup in Server Admin it seems to work again for a while, but not for long.
Please help me, i really need the server back to work.Ok, i'm at least some steps closer:
I have my data back in postgre and all users have their data back on their devices. At least their data up to the last backup.
Here is what i did:
I restored another time machine backup.
Apple claims, that serverbackup (and therefore Time Machine) does backups of the postgre data, which is true.
Apple claims, that the postgre data will be restored in case of a Time Machine restore. In my case it didnt.
You find a dumpall.psql in your time machine backups --> Library/Server/PostgreSQL/Backup (In my case there was a gzip file as well, but it didnt seem to be updated)
I connected with postgre using pgadmin 3 following this tutorial: http://www.mactasia.co.uk/revisited-using-postgresql-in-lion-server
I dropped all databases but the postgres-database.
Open Terminal and write "sudo psql -f infile postgres" with infile being the path to your dumpall.psql (More commands at http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.1/interactive/backup.html)
This will write all data from the backup to your database.
Voilá, you will have your data back.
Give the clients time to get the content back from the server.
Never start the wiki again, because it was the one which destroyed everything in the first place.
Still i have a huge problem:
I cant login with my main admin user. I can login with another admin. Then i reset the main user password and i can login with it again. But only once. Any advice on this? -
Time Machine Restore at 149.7% and freezes.
Hi there,
Yesterday I had a bit of trouble with my Macbook - took a long while to start up, and it showed this "progress bar" under the little Apple at start-up etc. Had this before and the Mac store changed the HD saying it was damaged.
So, fortunately I could start up, but not everything was working well enough. I managed to make a Time Machine back-up of my HD (some 250 Gb).
Did a disk check after starting up from the OSX CD, which recommended I should erase and restore.
Now, the HD has been erased now, and I started to do a Time Machine Restore.
But, after some 5-6 hours, it appears to have frozen up, at 149.7% (why did it exceed 100%?).
It's not doing anything now. I don't hear my laptop working, nor the external drive (and that one makes quite some noise when active). It's just sitting there at 149.7%. All I can do, is press a "Stop" button which I haven't done so far.Hi, and welcome to the forums.
It's possible that whatever was going wrong on your system damaged or corrupted some of the data. Time Machine may have backed-up the corrupted files, so now it's trying to reload the same problem(s).
By the way, be sure you're using a Snow Leopard Install disc to restore a Snow Leopard backup.
It sounds like this was your very first Time Machine backup -- if not, and the restore fails, try again from an earlier one, done before the problems started.
If you only have the single backup, and the restore fails, first run this: this: Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test
If that shows a problem, take it to Apple for repair.
If not, about all you can do is start up again from the Installer disc, but instead of selecting +Restore System From Backup+ in the Utilities menu, select +Disk Utility,+ and use it to erase your internal HD. Then quit Disk Utility, back to the Installer, and install a fresh copy of OSX.
When your Mac starts up again, use +Setup Assistant+ to restore everything else from your backups. See #19 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for details.
If some of that data was damaged, that may not work well. If it doesn't, post back and we'll try a workaround.
Then download and install the "combo" update to get back to 10.6.4. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards. -
Time machine restore resets after 1% completed
I am at the multi-language welcome screen, I get to the appropriate Time Machine restore backup and it begins. After 1.2% completed, it just takes me back to the multi-language welcome screen. No restart, no chimes, like nothing happened. I'm restoring from a 2-week old backup via USB on my 4 month old 15' MacBook Pro.
Please! I need this thing for work tomorrow and am desperate, the restore will take 9 hours and I'm getting frustrated.Check that the data cable to the drive is firmly inserted at both ends. If the drive is bus-powered but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter. If it's connected through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port. Try another cable. Failing all that, continue as below.
Starting from a fresh installation of OS X, set up a new administrator account and log in. You should now be able to enter Time Machine and restore your user data from a snapshot.* I suggest you do this in two stages. Quit all applications except the Finder before you begin.
Restore all the visible items at the top level of your home folder.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. Enter Time Machine and restore all items in the Library folder. Log out and log back in as soon as the restore is complete.
Any other invisible folders or files at the top level of your home folder that you want to preserve will have to be restored separately. For most users, that isn't necessary.
You'll have to reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, or restore them from another kind of backup, if you have one.
You'll have another problem if this is a new computer, or if you erased the startup volume: Time Machine won't continue your previous snapshot series, but will instead try to begin a new one, starting with a full copy of all files. There might not be enough space on your backup volumes for that. There are different ways of dealing with that situation, depending on your needs. The easiest way is to set your backup drives aside, if possible, until you're sure you'll no longer need the data on them, then erase them and start over. Meanwhile start a new backup on one or more empty storage devices. If that solution isn't workable for you, ask for instructions.
*If you don't see any snapshots in Time Machine, exit the time-travel view and then hold down the option key while selecting
Browse Other Backup Disks...
from the Time Machine menu, which has an icon that looks like a clock running backwards. Select the backups of your computer by its previous name. If you don't have the Time Machine menu, open the Time Machine preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked
Show Time Machine in menu bar
