Time Machine saves over 8 GB each time

I am using a USB drive connected to an airport extreme for my back up.
However each time I run time machine it saves 6 - 12 GB of data. So it takes several hours.
Is there a way to find out what files are the big ones and maybe exclude them or reduce thier size?
Thanks a lot
Philipp

you should know that your setup is not supported by Apple and your problem(s) may stem from it.

  • I'd like to go back to Maverick but i miss a Time machine save

    Hi everyone.
    Here are my 2 questions:
    - First, I'd like to go back to Maverick but i miss a Time machine save. Is it possible or it would be too complicated? Complicated is another word that i'd never, ever, imagine to use with an Apple product.
    - Second, how can i ask for a refund? I payed much for a high level of service and this is not even a good service
It has been a while since i wrote something in English so sorry for any errors, i'll try to fix them soon.
    Thanks for the help.

I'm sure Apple will be happy to refund the purchase price for Yosemite in full...

  • HT3231 Is it better to migrate to a new MacBook Pro using FireWire, from Time Machine, or over ethernet?

    Hello,
Is it better to migrate to a new MacBook Pro (non Retina display) using FireWire, from Time Machine, or over ethernet? The older Mac is a MacBook (Intel, 2007 vintage). The Time Machine backup is to a Western Digital external drive with FireWire & USB ports.
    Thanks!
    Chips

    Thanks for the helpful reply.
After posting, I read & researched further. We're going to be limited by the hardware – the MacBook & external drive both have FireWire 400, & we don't have a 400 to 800 cable or adapter. So we'll connect by ethernet, & be patient that it make take some time.
I have to assume that Migration Assistant will be just as comprehensive regardless of the connection method / protocol.
    Best!

  • Does Time Machine save all of your Apps as well?

    Hi,
I have a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard 10.6.7, which includes an Application called Time Machine. I have set it up to save onto an external HD and it has been doing this for months now.
I need to send my Mac in for repairs on the optical drive and was wondering if Time Machine saves everything on the External HD including Applications, so say if I were to delete an application by accident and went into Time Machine to the time before the Application was deleted, would it restore the deleted Application with its previous licence or would I have to reinstall it and enter in a new licence number?
Thank you for your time and all of your responces in advance.

    Hi
This is from the Time Machine Help pages:
Initially, Time Machine makes a complete backup, including system files, applications, accounts, preferences, music, photos, documents—everything you keep on your computer, except for a few temporary files (such as web browser caches).

Yes, applications are included.  However, one can set up Time Machine preferences so that certain files and folders don't get saved.

  • Match gets deleted and process takes over 20 tries each time to complete.

I have gone through the match twice (each time taking over 20 tries each). For some reason, my itunes match gets deleted, and I'm expected to try it again. This is really frustrating. How do I get my Match to stick and stop being deleted on the server. I'm not sure what is causing it to go wonky.  I do have my library in about 3 spots (2 local disks and one network disk). But goodness, why is it being removed on the server side? Shouldn't it realize that i've gone through this agonizing process more than once?
    I have a 2007 MacBook Pro running 10.7.5
    thanks in advance!

  • Is there a way to save over previous files without renaming when packaging InDesign files?

I am finding the file management a nightmare with having to package my work from Creative Cloud at home in order to work in Creative Suite at school. I usually have to do this back and forth multiple times for the same project creating multiple files and folders - it is too confusing!
I would like less clutter by having the option to save over my packages without having to rename resulting in yet another packaged folder for the same project to my storage devices. Is there a way to do this? I searched and am not finding answers to this particular issue.
Normally I would not package before the project is complete but I need the IDML files in order to continue my work when at school. Any answers or tips around how to manage this would be appreciated.
    Thank you!

Thank you Bob! I understood all of that. My frustration was that I have to give it a new name every single time I package thus creating yet another version of the same file on my system. I don't like cluttering my system with multiple versions of the same project. I work with duplicating layers inside the same document so I can always revert back to something done earlier without having to dig around and open an old file. I think this lack of saving over a file option is a flaw in the way the software is designed. One should always have the option to re-save over an old file with the same name. Just my opinion!

  • Opening CS3 docs in CS4 are not allowing me to save over?

    Hello,
When docs created in INCS3 are opened in CS4, by one of my students at their location,  and they go to save them, it treats it like a save as option, asking for the path, rather than allowing them to save over them. Is this normal?
    thanks!
    babs

    Yes.
The first time an older version document is opened in a newer version it is treated as a new document. Among other things, this is a safety feature to help prevent accidental overwriting and rendering a legacy file useless in the old version.

  • Does an HP Officejet 6700 Premium machine save Sent faxes into memory?

Does an HP Officejet 6700 Premium machine save [successfully] Sent faxes into memory?

"Sending a fax from memory" is not addressing the same issue as "saving Sent faxes into memory".
In general, printers do not retain any content (of faxes, or print jobs, etc.) in memory, because this would potentially require a very large quantity of non-volatile memory.
What they might retain (I don't know)  is some meta data (for example, the date, time and fax numbers of the last 20 sent faxes).
Some printers (almost certainly not your model) include a hard disk to which certain objects can be saved, but I've no idea whether or not his might include the content of faxes.

  • How to Save OVER original instead of creating another file

Hi, I set up iphoto to edit in photoshop. When I use photoshop I save it as is, without renaming or finding a new folder to put it in. At first, I assumed I would be effectively saving OVER the original, but when I clicked through "Show File" in iphoto it showed me a file in a modified folder.
Since then I have had to save my photoshopped photos in a completely different folder, imported them into iphoto, and deleted the originals. This is a pain. I would really love to find a way (or have someone create a way) to opt to save OVER the original. Sometimes, yes, it is nice to keep the original. But I am wise enough to decide for myself when the original is garbage and it's killing me to try to work around this. I'm not running out of space on my computer yet (it's only 9 months old) but I'd like to make sure I am not wasting any space.
    Thanks for your help!

Media Expression will do what you want and it will allow you to manage your folders yourself, add keywords, create albums (called Supplemental Categories) and a lot more.
Unfortunately (or not) iPhoto follows the tenets of good DAM (digital asset management) and preserves the original file as the digital negative. EM can do the same thing or let the user overwrite it if desired. All good DAM applications protect the original in one way or another. If an edit were to go wrong somehow and was accidentally saved there would be no going back.
Another option would be to use an image browser to manage the photos and use iPhoto only for special projects like books, calendars, cards, etc. That's what I do. I use EM to manage my photos and iPhoto for the special stuff.

  • I have 3 different emails over the years each with itunes music on them , how do i consolidate them so all of my music is on my current one?

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

  • How do i create a form in live cycle E4 that i can save as a PDF that the user cannot save over?

How do i create a form in live cycle E4 that i can save as a PDF that the user cannot save over?

You can't. If the file is made read-only via the file system, the user will prompted to save as a new file if they attempt to save.

  • Does photoshop cs6 not save over files that are also open in cs5?

I started a project in CS5, saved it, left it open, then opened the same file in CS6.  Then I started steadily working on the file in CS6 for about 20 minutes.  I saved frequently while working in CS6.  Then Photoshop crashed, I believe because I had several smart objects open at once.  However, when I checked the file I had been saving, it was still in an identical state to when I stopped working on it in CS5.  Not only that, but the "recovered file" was about 10 minutes behind in CS6.
    This is really frustrating.

I don't know what went wrong for you but you are correct that it's normally possible for CS6 to save over a file that's open in CS5, and vice versa, and the same thing is possible with many other apps.
Furthermore, some apps watch for changes being made to a file which they have open and will automatically update the version of the file which they hold in memory with the modified version that another app has written to disc.
Of course, there are apps, databases for example, which do lock files which they have open.
None of that helps you, but just letting you know that you weren't wrong to expect your work to be saved.

  • Not able to edit assets in Illustrator/Photoshop and save over existing assets in Edge animation

Not able to edit assets in Illustrator/Photoshop and save over existing assets in Edge animation to update image changes. Has Adobe changed this capability with new releases? Does this mean to update an asset on the Edge animation timeline, you have to copy and paste all the animations of that old asset over to the new imported asset?

    Hi, CamShazam-
You should be able to save over existing assets in the images/ folder, then close and reopen the file.  The other option is to save your assets and then use the swap image option in the properties panel.  Is this what you're talking about?  Thanks,
    -Elaine

  • Save over as LZW Tiff Droplet

    Hi,
I have created an action in PS which saves a files as a LZW Tiff and then created a droplet. I want to save and close the file in the same location that it is in (i.e. replace a it) but it keeps on saving it in the folder that I first saved as in the action - for example In:Macintosh HD:Users:Kerry:Desktop
Does anyone know how I can change this so it just saves over the original tiff in whatever location it is in? The droplet has suppress file open and colour options ticked and save and close as the destination...
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
    Thanks,
    Kerry

You might try checking: Override Action "Save As" Commands in the create droplet dialog.
