Time Machine Screwed up my Macbook Air!

I used time machine to transfer all my old Macbook to my Macbook Air and everytime I turn on my computer I get the Candy Spinning Wheel of Death....

Migration Assistant will transfer all applications and accounts. So your initial issue (not being able to find any files, music, etc) was because they weren't copied to the account you were logged into - a new account was created and the files transferred to it.
Migration Assitant doesn't overwrite the target computer's operating system but it will copy items into the sysem's library (into the folder called Library - not the folder called System) because some programs install Internet plugins, preferences, preference files, and application support files there. I suspect that's where the problem with the beachballs of death began.
Try restarting your computer and hold down the left shift key until the grey Apple appears. This is booting into Safe Mode. If the computer lets you log in and get to the Finder without the beachball taking over that suggests one solution. If you are still getting beachballs that suggests another.

  • Time Machine and the New Macbook Air

I am selling my iMac and have purchased a new Macbook Air. Since it does not have firewire or a DVD drive, does anyone know if I can ask Time Machine to restore the latest iMac backup directly to the MBA as a way of transferring my files to the new computer? Thanks.

Where are your backups? If they're on a USB drive, or a Time Capsule, you should be able to use +Setup Assistant+ on first boot. See [Setting up a new Mac from an old one or its backups|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Setup.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Snow Leopard > Installation and Setup+ forum).

  • HT4927 How do I retrieve photos from Time Machine on a new macbook air?

My previous mac book pro had all my photos on it. I thought I saved the library to a disk, but was unsuccessful. I also backed up my photos to my Time machine daily.  Once my macbook and coffee got acquainted, it no longer worked. I am unable to retrieve my photos from anywhere, nor do I know how to access them from my time machine. When I enter time machine, the date only goes as far back as to when I started back ups with the new macbook. How can I obtain them? I have a lot of baby photos I'm without.

Not for photos as I don't have alot of room, nor am I 100% know what I am doing.

I have a new macbook air, and want to transfer all my data using time machine from my old macbook running leopard, is this possible and easy and will it transfer all my musc and photos?

The Setup Assistant can restore your data from a Time Machine backup. You'll be asked if you want to do this the first time you turn the computer on.

In addition, I have another question, after bought the Mac, I found there is a screw come out and we can touch it clearly, could I know why?

    Amanda,
I have asked the moderator to remove your personal information, including your email and serial number. Posting that information on a public forum is not very wise.
Regarding the loose screw take the machine to an Apple Store or AASP to be looked at.
Regarding your first  question, would you please re-word it, I'm having difficulty trying to understand what you are looking for.

  • Can I use my 2TB WD My Book Essential for the Time Machine feature on the MacBook as well as two other Windows computers (one running 7 and one with Vista)?

Can I use my 2TB WD My Book Essential for the Time Machine feature on the MacBook as well as to store information from two other Windows computers (one running 7 and one with Vista)?

Yes you can but you need to partition the drive into at least 2 separate drives.
To do that you need to use a Windows PC to do the first partitioning. Say you split the drive into two partitions each 1TB (or close to 1TB) each.
Partition fand format both partitions on a Win PC as one NTFS and the other FAT32.
Then move it to the Mac and Reformat the FAT32 partition Mac Extended (Journaled) with a GUID Partition Table.
I have that same drive and that is what I did originally with it. I now have it just for the Mac as I have other externals for the Win systems.
    Good Luck.

  • Using Time Machine on the new MacBook after migration

    Hello,
I have an external hard disk that I use for time machine. I changed my laptop from Macbook Pro 15" to Macbook Pro 13" and I used this external hard disk to migrate from my older Macbook to the new one. Now I want to use my external hard disk to back up my new computer but the problem is that I think when I try to backup it makes the backup on top of everything from my older computer. The back up on the new Macbook takes 250GBs on top of 600-700GBs. I don't think that my backup should take 900GB of space. I think 600-700GBs is from the older computer and I don't want to have an unnecessary backup on top of what I actually need...
So what should I do to get rid of that 600-700GB properly , and then set the external hard disk as the new time machine for my new Macbook ?
    My OS is 10.8.4.
    Thank you

Exactly how did you do that?
If you used Setup Assistant when the new Mac started up (preferred), or the Migration Assistant app later on, and let it transfer Computer Settings, when the next backup started, you should have been asked if you wanted the new Mac to "inherit" the old Mac's backups.  See #B5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for more explanation and details.
If you did something else, or answered the prompt with Create New Backup, you may be able to do that manually.  It's a bit geeky, though. See #B6 in the same link.

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

  • Time Machine 1 iMac, 1 Macbook and one external drive

This must be a very simple question as I cannot find anyone else that seems to have this problem.
I have a Macbook that is just a few months old and a very new iMac each running Leopard. I have an external drive connected via Firewire 800 to the iMac. I have shared the drive on the iMac so the Macbook can access it. I mount the drive under Devices in Finder on the Macbook. In Time Machine preferences on the Macbook I select the drive to be used by Time Machine. When I do a Back up Now I get the Preparing message for a few seconds and then get a Failed message. The status is: 'Latest Backup: Delayed'.
Oh and I have just clicked on the red I next to the Failed message and am told:
Time Machine Error The backup volume could not be mounted.
Is Time Machine an idea before its time (I speak as an old Windows user that is used to stuff being released before it is stable - and I am beginning to wonder if I should have stuck with the devil I know)

See this article: Mac OS X 10.5- Time Machine - "The backup volume could not be mounted" alert.

  • Imported old computer via time machine into new 2012 macbook pro, but its still running ilife 09 instead of 11?

imported old computer via time machine into new 2012 macbook pro, but its still running ilife 09 instead of 11?

I am assuming you had iLife 09 on the old computer - when you moved everything over, that came along with it.
I also have older versions of iLife (on install disks) and just recently got a new 2012 Macbook Pro. I noticed that iMovie 11, iPhoto and Garageband (I think) are listed in my Mac App Store Purchases with a notation to "accept". So you might want to check MAS to see if the apps are sitting there.
Now, I have chosen not to accept them for now for two reasons: I have iLife 11 on a disk and prefer that rather than having it tied to MAS/Apple ID and as long as I have my disk version installed, I also still have iDVD which I use a lot. I'm not sure if "accepting" those three from MAS would wipe out my iLife 11 installs including iDVD (which would be unacceptable for me). So, since I already have the latest version, I've opted to ignore the "accept" and, in fact, will leave it like that - if I ever sell this machine, the buyer can then accept them if they want with their own Apple ID. So before accepting the apps (if they are listed in MAS), you might want to check to make sure that your iLife install isn't wiped out - that is, if you have iDVD and want to keep it.

  • Each time I start up my MacBook Air a document appears on the desk top -calendarlogging.txt  I'm synching my calendar with iCloud.  Using Mavericks, but the same file was appearing using Lion.  Any thoughts.  Thanks

Each time I start up my MacBook Air a text file appears on the desk top (calendarlogging, txt) the file/document contains lines of code.  I'm using iCloud to synch my calendar to multiple other devices - iMac, iPad and iPhone.  Using Maverick on both my iMac and my MacBook Air.  The file was also showing up on the desktop when I was using Lion.  Any thoughts?

    Hi everyone,
To anyone who might read this, I ended up re-installing with the original install disc and was able to get back on to Mac, though I lost all of the previous data that I had not backed up. Unsure still if it will continue to let me access the HDD in this, but it kind of confirms that installing Lion probably put too much stress on the computer this last year.
