Time Machine - Seagate GoFlex

Hi
I have been using a Seagate GoFlex Home drive connected to my wireless router as my Time Machine backup drive.
It has stopped working and i get a message saying,
"The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features.
Open Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk."
Is this because of Lion, or a different reason.
Please help

    Hi ive bought a seagat backup plus external hard drive. Ive been using it to transfer files from a pc to my new mac. When i originally used it for the first time, i think it asked me if i was using it between both windows and mac formats so i said yes, and this has worked seamlesly.
    Now all my files are on the mac, i want to use it for a time machine back up. Upon trying this it failed because it is not in the correct format i think.
    So here is a couple of questions....
    1- How do i give it the correct format?
    2- Some of my family still use the windows pc, and i would have liked to have still been able to use the hard drive across both formats. So if i format for Time machine, will this not then be possible?

  • Time Machine Seagate HD to my MacPro.

    I recently added a Seagate HD to my MacPro. Installation went like clockwork and so did initialisation and other installation measures. There is, however, something I do not understand. Now that the Time Machine has had the opportunity to make backups, I thought I would test the backup. So, in Finder, I clicked on Seagate HD, which led to backup, then MacIntosh HD and Applications. I chose Pages as the application I would open, but an error message appeared, saying that there was an error, denominated -10657. None of the other applications in that panel (except some Adobe's) would open, all showing the same error. Why is that ?
    Now, if I go to Users on the Seagate, the next pane shows Documents, Library, System etc but not "Applications". If i then choose Documents, and from there select a specific document, there is no problem: the corresponding Application opens. I sense that the 10657 error shown merely means that a user should first have been designated but showing Applications on the same pane as Users seems like an invitation to open an application without going through Users. Can anyone explain that ?

    Thank you but that did not work. I clicked on the Time Machine icon in the Dock which opened my Desktop, clicked on Applications, went to Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac, clicked on Powerpoint. Result: a semi transparent small window showing the Powerpoint icon, No amount of clicking there will open PowerPoint.
    I then chose iWork and Pages. That didn't work. Same result as Word. I think opened Dictionary.app and that worked well. Several other apps worked also. Apparently, there are some applications that Time Machine will open and others it will not. Unfortunately, for me, Word and Pages, Powerpoint and Keynote are the apps I shall need if wish to go back in time. They are the ones Time Machine will not open.
    I tested my backup drive, a Seagate Barracuda, brand new. No problem there. I can open any Word or Pages I want. It looks therefore as if the problem is with Time Machine.

  • Can't view my iPhoto libary in Time Machine backup

    So here is the issue; I often view my pictures of iPhoto by going directly into the iPhoto Library: Finder --> Pictures --> iPod Photo Cache --> iPhoto Library --> then right click on this "iPhoto Library" --> Show Package Content... and I can view all my photoes/events the way I uploaded them from my camera.
    So far everything is good. However, when I'm going into my External Hard Drive which I'm using as my Time Machine (Seagate Backup Plus FOR MAC) and trying to locate the same folder there I can NOT find it. The only folders I can locate under my latest backup (and every backup since I started using this external device) are:
    - AlbumData2.xml
    - iPhoto.ipspot
    - Metadata Backup --> BackupStatus.impeta
    - Metadata Backup (original) --> BackupStatus.impeta
    All of the files are extremly small (like few KB) compare to my 280GB iPhoto Library.
    Can anyone help me find my complete "iPhoto Library" on my external backup drive.

    You are welcome.
    My concern now, is that if I just simply move the iPhoto Library by dragging it to the main Picture folder I will loose the link between the source (which are the photoes in the iPhoto Library) and the pictures I'm looking at when opening the iPhoto application.
    Moving the library between folders will not break the connection between the thumbnails and the original image files, as long as you drag the library as an entity - the whole package and not folders inside. So dragging the iPhoto library one level up, outside the "iPod Photo Cache" folder, the links shoud stay intact.
    Have you checked your Time Machine preferences, if you excluded your iPhoto Library from backup?
    if you press the "Options" button in the "System Preferences > Time Machine" panel, it will show a list of items, that are excluded from backup.

    After having my hard drive replaced I restored using time machine (Seagate backup drive)  There are 2 users of  this iMac.  After restoring I seem to have all my stuff back but the other user has nothing, no pics etc.  I assumed that time machine backed up everything on the computer.  Is it possible that it only backed up my data? If not, how do I restore the other users data.  Appreciate any help with this!

    How did you restore the computer? If you used migrate it is important you prepared the computer correctly. If you already setup the user name that pre-existed on the old hard disk migrate will not work properly.. you cannot restore to the same username. So you might need to do the restore again.. (migrate but to a different location eg a USB drive and pick up the files from there).. TM should backup all users that previously were on the computer.. but how you restored will affect how it behaves now.

    Ok, I solved this problem! I ejected the drive and then disconnected it both from the power supply and the USB connector. I then reconnected everything and powered it up again and Then went into TM preferences and chose the drive as the backup. TM did a new backup (well over an hour) and now works as advertised.

  • Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 500GB Disconnects Unexpectedly during Time Machine backups

    I have a 20" 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (Early 2008) iMac with 4GB Ram.  A few days ago I finally took the time to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks.  I have 3 Seagate external drives connected to the iMac (2 connected directly and one through a powered hub - all via USB).  I use one of the external drives, a 500GB Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex named TARDIS for my Time Machine backups.  This has been running fine for quite a while.  After the upgrade to Mavericks I started seeing it disconnect unexpectedly.  There were no power fluctuations, the cord was not bumped, and this had never happened prior to the upgrade.
    I searched these boards and found several people having issues with drives disconnecting after upgrading and followed suggestions regarding resetting the pram which I did to no effect, a suggestion to delete the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist preferences file which I did, also to no effect.  Finally, knowing that I didn't have anything irreplaceable on the existing Time Machine backups, I re-formatted the drive - this also had no effect.  Through this process I discovereed that the disconnects were always happening while Time Machine was trying to run a backup.  It would get to about 20 megabytes backed up and then just sit there until it gave me the drive was improperly disconnected message.
    I was getting really frustrated at this point.  I read something somewhere about issues with the main drive causing errors with Time Machine (not sure the details at this point) and so I did a Verify Disk on my internal system drive.  It did find some issues so I followed the instructions to repair them which worked fine.  I also ran the verify on the Time Machine drive which did not discover any issues.
    I reformatted the drive again, giving it a different name (Backup).  I set up Time Machine again to backup to the newly named drive.  It was backing up properly.  I thought I had finally gotten it into a working state.  I thought maybe there was a trace of the old drive name somewhere that was causing the issue.  The backup finished successfully.  All was good.  Until the next time Time Machine started to run when it again stalled before disconnecting.
    I reformatted the drive one more time, giving it yet another new name (Delorean) and have not set up Time Machine.  If I don't run Time Machine, the drive does not suffer issues with disconnecting.  I have tried copying a large file to the drive to see if some I/O would trigger a disconnect and I had no problems.  I plan to run a few more tests like this but so far it has been connected for more than 24 hours and has not disconnected itself.  This to me suggests it is something to do with Time Machine running under Mavericks.  I don't have another Mac that I can try running Time Machine on to verify that this is an issue caused by Mavericks but that seems to be the case.
    Any ideas?

    I really wish people would learn about the A #1 issue that affects external HD,  its a 50 cent part that makes it seem their ext. HD has failed / failing.
    Thousands of people every day experience what at first seems that their external USB or Thunderbolt HD, either 2.5" portable or 3.5" desktop model is dying, is dead, or all hope is lost for it. Good news is that you have roughly a greater than 50-60% chance that your external hard drive is perfectly fine!
    The great news at the end of the tunnel of an apparently failed or failing external hard drive.
    When checked on another computer, and with no need for spending money on data extraction expertise or software, the very likely case is that your external USB or thunderbolt HD is in fact fine, and merely the card interface, or SATA bridge card has failed or is failing.  Keeping a HD dock around handy, or cheaper still a $20 hard drive enclosure or a SATA to USB connector can be a real life saver in getting your drive back to use, when the drive itself is fine, and merely its interface card has gone bad.

    What are the realistic odds your HD is perfectly fine?
    There are no hard facts whatsoever, especially since so many people discard their assumed “dead/faulty” hard drives, but a good educated conclusion from years of examining and seeing this issue is that for hard drives made since 2010, and not dropped or generally abused, is that a minimum of 50% conservatively are perfectly fine! I personally estimate however that it likely approaches 60%+.
    Considering how many external hard drives ‘fail’ (rather the SATA bridge more than half the time) each day, that is a very high number of perfectly fine HD that are tossed!
    This is especially common with 3.5” desktop HD that are connected 24/7 with power and see a lot of data transfer. People wrongly conclude that “X” mfg. just made a defective drive, when in fact their 3.5” drives inside the plastic enclosure is 100% fine.  I have personally seen well over 200 of these dead SATA cards and additionally seen 3 fail within a one hour span of doing a large data copies.
    One of the very reason pros use bare HD as inserted into HD docks is not just the saving of space and the need for endless USB cables, but the elimination of the need for this high failure-rate part.
    While the shapes and sizes vary somewhat on SATA bridge cards, they all serve the same purpose and have likewise failure rates
    What exactly is the SATA bridge card in your external HD?
    In the middle to late of 2009, most all external hard drives both in 2.5” and 3.5” reached the shelves in SATA III. These small SATA cards or "bridges" are used to translate between the hard drives’ interfaces and the enclosures' external ports (USB, Thunderbolt, Firewire). Additionally these small bridges not only transfer power but also of course the data. Unfortunately these SATA bridge cards have a very high failure rate as they are burdened with moving power (in 2.5" HD) and of course data.
    Literally, these little unreliable and fragile cards are the power conduits and of course the nervous system for all external HD data transfer.

    The assumption that the hard drive is bad when its not!
    Countless 1000s of good external hard drives are thrown away each year because the owner thought the HD was bad when it fact it was the SATA bridge card which had failed. This card is removed in a matter of mere second once an external USB HD is cracked open from its plastic casing to reveal the bare HD and the attached SATA card which attaches between the HD and the USB cable.
    To complicate this problem, even many computer professionals do not know that there is a very easy solution to the “failing or dead HD” issue since the hard drive itself is very likely just fine.  Its astonishing that so many highly educated computer repair persons are unaware of this high-failure part, but this is mostly due to the fact that they do not juggle 100s of hard drives and know that of the iceberg that is a “external hard drive failure”, the mostly unseen majority are not a HD failure at all, but a bridge card failure.
    To add to this great misunderstanding is the fact that people assume that "likewise symptoms seen on an external HD are the same as seen on an internal HD, therefore also the external HD must be bad". This is a compositional fallacy of logic. Since internal HD do not have a SATA bridge interface, to conclude similar symptoms "indicate the same failure" is misplaced and incorrect.
    This is all not to say that HD do not fail, they do indeed, and I have seen many 100s of dead and failing hard drives.  Hard drives even under ideal conditions have a life expectancy of around 4-8 years due to ferromagnetic depolarization from entropy and the main reason being mechanical failure.  But of the mountain of symptoms that are seen as “hard drive failures” in comments, posts, and hearsay, half or more of these are not a HD failure at all.
    What makes up an external USB HD or Thunderbolt HD?
    While modern external HD boxes vary in shape and size somewhat, they're the same inside on almost 100% of them.
    Four parts essentially:
    1. Your 2.5” or 3.5” hard drive.
    2. The plastic or metal box it rests in.
    3. The USB cable and also (in the case of the 3.5” external) the power cable and block. 
    4. The SATA bridge card.

    The USB cables are almost entirely unheard of today to fail, and the box enclosure cannot fail, leaving the good HD you have taken care of and the 50 cent part which juggles both power and data to and from the HD itself, that being the SATA card.
    What drives will work for this go-around fix?
    Almost any drive 2010 and later, all 3.5” HD mid-2010 and on, and almost all USB 2.5” external hard drives, including firewire, and thunderbolt enclosure encased conventional platter hard drives.
    The rare exception is a slimline 7mm thick "slim" external HD in both Toshiba and WD in certain models where the SATA bridge has been incorporated into the HD to save money and production costs.
    Much older drives 2009 and earlier will not work for this faulty part work around.

    Event store UUIDs don't match  naming your internal HD or any other drive/partition being backed-up.  Time Machine can't be sure the OSX internal log of file changes that it normally uses is correct. 
    This happens in the following circumstances:
    •The first backup of a disk, or to a new location
    •After booting from your install disc, Recovery HD, or a different OSX volume (usually)
    •A full restore
    •Certain hardware repairs (e.g., new internal disk or logic board)
    •Removal of large exclusions
    •A very large volume of changes (especially an OSX update)
    •An improper shutdown of your Mac, or improper disconnection or power loss on the Time Machine drive
    •If it's an external HD, an improper shutdown or disconnection of the drive
    •A failed or cancelled backup
    •Many days without a backup
    It usually causes a lengthy deep scan/traversal (below), so if you see it frequently, you need to figure out why it's happening.

    I want to start Time Machine. I bought a Goflex Home netwrork storage system, which says it is compatible with Imac. Each time I go online to try to get any updates, it always comes back saying Error. In other words, I can't start Time Machine because I can't get any software updates. Anyone else experiencing problems with Seagate software updates?

    If you want to use Time Machine the Seagate software is unnecessary. The drive is probably ntfs format which is not for the Mac.
    Manually preparing a new disk for Time Machine
    If you want to erase a disk before using it with Time Machine, follow these steps:
    Open Disk Utility (located in the Utilities folder).
    Connect the disk if it isn't already attached.
    In the left side of the Disk Utility window, select the disk you want to use with Time Machine.
    Optional: If you want to partition the disk, click the Partition tab and select a layout. Make sure "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" is selected in the Format menu for the partition that will be used for backups. Click Apply.
    Click the Erase tab.
    Optional: If you want to securely erase the disk, click Security Options to configure, then click OK.
    Click Erase.
    After erasing, open Time Machine preferences in System Preferences and configure as described in the section above.

    Forgive my ignorance, but I can't figure out how to connect Time Machine with my new hard drive. I've clicked on "select back up disk" but my external hard drive doesn't appear. I've looked at a lot of similar support online, but everything tells me to click the button and select the drive, but not what to do if there is no drive to select. Can anyone help me? Am I missing something obvious?

    In theory, I agree that it ought to be simple, but that's Seagate's programming, not Apple's.  Few folks here, and none at Apple, are familiar with it.
    Do you have the current version?  Does it claim to be compatible with the version of OSX you're on (is that Snow Leopard 10.6.8, per your profile)?  Not all NASs are compatible with all versions of OSX.  You need to contact Seagate (or return the NAS).
    Again, I'd strongly recommend reconsidering.  I just spent the better part of a couple of days helping a user of a GoFlex Home who replaced her internal HD, then found her backups were corrupted, piece her system back together.  Not for the faint of heart.

    I strongly recommend having an external drive dedicated solely for TimeMachine. You could partition the drive but if something goes wrong you risk losing the data on both partitions. Should you decide to go ahead with splitting the drive for two different uses you’ll need to partition the drive either using the Mac’s built in Disk Utility program or Windows utility. I believe the built in Windows disk utility program will destroy the current partition and erase the data that’s on it - I use a third party Windows disk utility program for partitioning and it allows for non-destructive partitioning but warns to back up data first just in case. Apple’s Disk Utility can do non-destructive partitions but I don’t recall every trying to do a non-destructive partition on a disk originally formatted for Windows using it. Again - back up that data just in case.
    Finally, your TimeMachine drive should be at least 1.5 times (I prefer 2 times) the size of the data you expect to be backing up a year or two from now.  In other words, if you currently are using 50GB of your computer’s drive but expect to begin purchasing Mac software to replace software on your Windows computer and if you expect to be putting photos, music, and other data on it you might expect that two years from now you’ll have 100GB of stuff on the drive. So a 200GB partition is the smallest size you’d want.  TM’s backup scheme keeps multiple copies of data as it changes so the extra room is important for this scheme.

    Does Time Machine erase previously saved files if, say, photos are deleted from the Macbook upon the next update, or will they be stored indefinately despite the current status of the files stored on the computer? Eg. can I bckup photo files to a Seagate 1T disc and then delete them to make more room on the computer in the knowlwdge that they are always going to be on the Seagate disc? Sorry if this is very elementary but I have not used a back up before like this, and am not sure how successive backups are overlaid or retained. Thanks!!

    TM is not designed to do what you ask. As Allan wrote TM is an incremental backup not an archival solution.
    If you delete a file from the HD it will eventually be removed from the TM backup (if it ever makes it on to the backup at all).
    How long before it is removed depends on a number of factors, TM disk drive size being one factor but not the only one.
    Material that is impossible to replace and is important to you (image files usually fitting that description) need to be backed up to as least one other drive and preferably more for long term storage.

  • When Time Machine tries to back up to my Seagate HD before the HD is fully on, it fails. Then Time machine thinks it needs to back up the entire drive and there's not enough room. It won't just do the backup of new info now. Any thoughts?

    When I try to do a Time Machine backup with my Seagate HD, and if I accidentally have Time Machine automatically on, it will fail if the HD is not fully on and recognized by the computer yet. But the problem is that when this has happened (twice now), it seems it loses all knowledge that it has backed up using Time Machine before and it will only try to back up the entire Mac HD to the Seagate. The Seagate already has 147 GB of data from prior Time Machine backups and I only need to backup the latest stuff since my last backup, but it won't let me do that. It tries to do the whole drive and it says it can't because there is only 135 GB of space left and it needs to backup 147 GB. Anyone know how to fix this and get it to start backing up again without erasing the drive and starting over? That's what I did last time. I erased the Seagate and then reset it as my Time Machine drive and it started working fine again until it failed and reverted to the problem. Thanks

    These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to an abnormal backup. Now
    CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
    so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
    If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
    If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

  • How do I get time machine to see my Seagate external drive?  I

    I continue to have trouble getting the machine to ID an external drive for time machine.  I bought a new external, Seagate, installed it and things were fine, until I had to move my computer due to home repairs.  I ejected the Seagate as part of the shut down for the move, and when I reconnected everything OS now no longer sees the Seagate. 
    I have a 2008 Imac with 10.8.4

    Dear experts, I am trying to view a PDF from my iPad3 on my HD-TV using AppleTV 2. All works well except for the fact that due to screen aspect ratio (4:3 iPad vs. 16:9 TV) I end up with black bars left and right. So how can I get the PDF fullscreen

    I am trying to create a large catalog.  I have 3 very different product types that require different info, and therefore I think, completely different templates.  I was thinking that I will need to create three separate data merge templates/ merges,
