Time machine seems to have losts valauble brain cells

Time machine on my macbook is seriosuly stupid. When you wake the macbook up and there is no network available time machine will constantly try to mount the disk to back up (I back up over my home network)
The consequence to this can be devastating. For instance if I try to open or save anything the finder cannot find the network either and allt hat occurs is you get a system wide crash.
This used to happen in 10.4 and 5 and seemed to be fixed for a while in 6, but its back with a vengence.
It mightn ot be time machine persay, but an issue of the fact that snow leopard is a bit stuipd so does not realise that if a network is not available its not going to find the disk that was on that network.
So why does it not just stop looking instead of crashing my mac?

TM will constantly attempt to find the disk, it will spin dumbly all day.
But I think this is merely the manifestation of a larger issue in that SL is too stupid to work out that my network is not there.
No. It doesn't on mine when I am at work - it looks once, fails and gives up so the fault is somehow in your machine. In fact, when I reconnect to the TM at home, it will not restart until I prompt it to do it. This is how it operates when not being confused by something. The something is in your machine, not in the TM or TC interface so lets try and find out what the problem is.
Could you download the Time Machine Buddy Widget and let it run when you are next at work and extract the logs. Post them here please. ? We can then see what is happening.
Initial thoughts are that somehow your system thinks the backup drive is mounted even though it isn't there and so it will try and keep backing up. Normally when you disconnect, or a drive isn't there, there is an ignore button which one can use to temporarily fool the system while a backup drive is being swapped for example. Its almost as if someone is pressing the Ignore button and the backup drive is staying mounted.

  • Time Machine seems to have locked me out of data previously on ext. drive?

I copied my Tiger install off to an external USB disk, so that I could do a clean install of Leopard... which went well. I'd been happily dipping into ~/Library on the external drive, to get at the settings I needed in tweaking the newly reinstalled apps on the MBP.
Then I turned TimeMachine on, using the same external drive. And now I've been locked out of all the private folders inside the Tiger backup on that drive...
    Help?

This is normal. The Time Machine application just doesn't know the information to put in because it hasn't initiated a backup yet on the "new" selected disk. I wrote "new" because Time Machine doesn't know about the previous backup yet. As long as you have the correct disk selected in the change disk options of Time Machine (the one with the backup sparsebundle file already on it), once you initiate a backup it will mount the Backup and read it (it may take some time) and input the information back in the fields that are now blank. It will continue backup as usual, based on my experience.

  • Where is my I Photo Library in Time Machine Backups as I seem to have lost photos after installing Lion?

Can anybody tell me how I can locate my photos from I Photo in the Time Machine backups as I seem to have lost most of 2011 after installing Lion.
    Many thanks

To recover individual photos open iPhoto and use the File ➙ Browse Backups menu option.
That will take you into iPhoto in Time Machine where you can search for the phtoos and restore them.
To restore the entire library, close iPhoto, go to the Pictures folder, enter Time Machine, go back in time till you get the library you want to restore, select it and use the Restore button.

Well, iCloud has nothing to do with this.
Do you have the built-in backup function Time Machine running on your Mac?

I had to erase my data to upgrade my iPhone software from an older version. I backed up first, but seem to have lost all my notes.   Does anyone know how retrieve my old notes?

Is this the note you are referring to:
Not sure if this can help you.
I checked my notes. They are stored here:
    MacintosHD/Users/MYHOME/Library/Containers/com.apple.notes/Data/Library/CoreData /ExternalRecords/
    xxxxxserie.of.numbers.probably.yours.are.different/IMAPNote/_records/0/
If I go tot this window on finder and enter Time Machine I can go back and find old notes...
If so, am I doing this on my new hard drive on on the time machine? When I do this on the time machine, what is "my home"? Also, I am unable to find "containers".
If I go to users/jeff/library, then I see components, compositions, contextual, etc, but not containers.

  • In Lion, Time Machine seems to be perpetually running - and running slowly

Up through Snow Leopard, Time Machine did its incremental backup every hour quickly and stopped.
Since upgrading to Lion back in July, Time Machine seems be be running almost all the time - and very very very slowly. There doesn't seem to be any exessive Spotlight indexing going on anymore. That was long ago. So I don't think that's it.
Preparing for backup takes a long time. It take hours to eke through the backup itself, even if there weren't many changes, and finishing backup takes a long time.
I would say each backup, no matter how small, takes more than three hours.
At these forums there seems to be lots of discussion threads about this, and help pages linked to, but the suggested solutions seem to be a jumble, with some people saying they worked and many saying it didn't.
I did do a disk repair on the Time Machine volume just in case. And there is nothing else on that drive except for Time Machine backups. The drive is directly connected to my iMac (3.06 GHz Dual Core Duo, 12 GB RAM). While not vital, I'd rather not reformat the drive and lost all my old backups, which go back over a year. If I knew for sure that was the solution I'd do it. But in the discussions here there are people who seem to have tried that and reported back that it didn't help.
Right now it says it's backing up 3.5 MB of 132.9 MB - and taking forever to do it.
I know that since the last backup I haven't changed anywhere near 132.9 MB of data. Unless Lion is making massive behind-the-scene changes.
Something definitely seems to be wrong with Time Machine in Lion.
Have there been any additional thoughts on this? Is Time Machine just buggy in Lion?
    Thanks,
    doug

I feel ya, dawg, as they say. Right now I'm running a backup that has taken 43 minutes thus far. On an idle machine, it backed up 29.8 MB (17,949 files) followed by 19.5 MB (17,256 files). 12 min. for the first batch, 11 min., for the second. 13 min. of "Finishing backup" until it transitioned to "Cleaning up," which just completed after 12 min. Each backup typically goes 70–90 minutes. So backups are running for 65% – 80% of the time, if I leave TM running. I don't; instead, I turn on backups before going to bed, and turn them off on the first happy occasion when I notice that TM is idle.
TM backups have been behaving this way for about 2 months. Before that they were as speedy as Snow Leopard, for a couple of weeks. Before that they were taking 3 hours with the dreaded "Waiting for index to be ready" messge repeating for on hour or more. I fixed this latter problem by "trying everything" from http://pondini.org/TM/D2.html (a fine resource but, as you say, all over the map as all of the suggestions are).
TM in Lion is hosed. It's as simple as that.

  • I seem to have lost the abilty to send a PM ...plus username..

I seem to have lost the abilty to send a PM in the Adobe forums
Is that the case for everyone or am I being stupid and missing something?
For the record...I wanted to respond privately to Steven Gotz and Bill Hunt : re Usernames.
    @Bill ..awesome memory sir.
You are absolutely correct when you informed Steven  of my username situation
At least is the case of ShooterNZ, Craig used to use his real name, but somehow his Adobe I.D. got hosed, and he could not get it back, so he adopted ShooterNZ.
Many of us were affected similarly at that time (a long time ago.)
When I tried to fix it and  get it back ..I was informed it was not available as a Username.
Used by some one else... that would have been me in fact .
I was probably the first person in the world to steal my own identity ..off myself.   (With Adobes help)
    @Steven
    What Bill said.
No hidden mystery or reason  behind it apart from that!

Not sure what is going on with your one "problem" computer.
Many aspects of the Adobe Forums rely on JavaScript to function, so might be something there. On Chrome, I have recently lost the ability to "Attach" a URL link, as I was once able to do. I get only part of that Attach Link dialog screen now, so have to just Copy/Paste the full URL, rather than embed it, say over the word "ARTICLE," as I could until recently. I have not been able to find out what changed on my laptop, and with Chrome only - things worked perfectly for a year, or so, then suddenly I developed a problem, and it seems to be unique to my machine and to my installation of Chrome. Stuff happens.
    Good luck,

  • After the last update of itunes I seem to have lost all my music (Cds that I had downloaded into itunes) except the once I had purchased from the itunes store. Can anyone help? Do you know what might have happened?

After the last update of itunes I seem to have lost all the music that I had downloaded from my Cds. It was a lot of music! All I still have is the music that I had purchased in the itunes store. And before you asked. No, I did not have a backup. Never got around to do it.
Does anyone of you have an idea if and how I can maybe get my music back?
Your help is very much appreciated. Would it help if I recover my computer from an earlier date?? I am not even sure if I make sense here.

Hi - I seem to have a similar problem. I was prompted to update to iPhoto 11 yesterday (don't know why yesterday, I'm in iPhoto all the time). So I followed the instructions, library updated, all existing events and albums are there. I uploaded some more pictures and created a few new albums and did some new year spring cleaning, moving stuff around etc. And I started making a calendar.
I've opened it up today, my calendar is still there as are all the new events, but the pictures are empty outlines. If I open up a picture I just get the "!" but I can still see the thumbnails showing in the slider in the bottom - I don't know if that means the source files must still be there somewhere, or if it just means it captured thumbnails yesterday.
I've gone into it via "show package contents" and there just don't seem to be any masters for an upload yesterday. I also just had a look in the last import folder, because of a comment from someone above. As I scrolled down through the folder the images were there and literally disappeared in front of me - by which I mean, the thumbnails were there as I scrolled down and then would turn into empty outlines...!
All my old folders are still there, thankfully (although they're of course the ones that are also all safely back up).
Although I have a timecapsule, my photo library is too big to keep on my hard drive, so I keep it on an external drive - so it only gets backed up when I do it manually (thanks Apple for that, I will never understand why it was designed to work - or not work - that way). So if the pictures have been lost then they are gone for good which is super-frustrating (I just got back from South Korea and was in the middle of sorting out all my shots from that trip).  It seems that this can only have happened because of the update - I should have known better than to have pressed yes.
If you have any ideas, I'd be most grateful!
    Regards
    R

  • I seem to have lost some of my settings and now I cannot configure my airport connection. How do I get my settings back?

Hello. First time using this. Still trying to figure out how to post my questions. I seem to have lost some of my settings and now I cannot configure my airport connection. How do I get my settings back?

If you are using cable and a Nethear router sounds like from the information you provide before your Airport setting are setup improperly. PPoE is not something a cable service would need to work. Fallow the steps I will provide bellow, I will add some screen shots also to assist if necessary.
1 - Open System Preferences from  (Menu)
    2 - Click "Network"
3 - From the Network window you are going to wanna make sure Location is : Automatic and Show is : Airport
4 - Once the Show: Airport is select you should see a window like this, my window is selected for Ethernet simply because I am no longer running Tiger but the window will look the same.
5 - You will want to click on the PPPoE tab and you should see this
6 - You're gonna wanna make sure " connection using PPPoE " is not select, if it is make sure to uncheck this option
7 - Once this is uncheck make sure to click "Apply Now"
8 - You will want to click back on to the "TCP/IP" tab and make sure IPv4 is set to " Using DHCP "
9 - If the option to " Apply Now" is available again please click this
10 - Once this is done go to your Aiport Menu and see if your network is listed and select your network and eneter the password if necessary.
11 - If after these steps you still have issues I would recommend Power Cylcing your Router and Modem for about 5 minutes
12 - Make sure all lights are off when unplugging the Router and the Modem
13 - Some Modems have backup batterys so you may have to push in a tiny button on the back with a pin

I seem to have lost the red, green, and yellow dots that are in the upper left hand corner that close or minimize the page.  How can I get them back?

You may have to try a general OS X troubleshooting process to see if the issue goes away by doing this...
Have you tried: starting the computer in SafeBoot mode, with shift key held down; a login screen should appear after a time, and then the regular desktop. At this point, locate Disk Utility in utilities folder, and run 'repair disk permissions' on the startup volume, usually the name given the hard disk drive as it appears on desktop. After Disk Utility is finished the permissions repair, restart the computer normally.
...The iTunes player has free support only through the duration of the hardware product's complementary or AppleCare extended plan coverages, so though you can download a newer version, that is not the same as free support for an issue. However, the iTunes Store or App Store has a different factor for their product.
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/
There is an iTunes area in Apple Support Community discussions for more topics like this; except for when they involve a hardware product where an OS X is involved. If your computer is NOT a powerPC (an 'intel'-mac) the topic would more naturally need to be posted where that hardware and later supported OS X version topics get seen. So that is why one asks 'on what Mac running what version...' instead of writing four paragraphs in a wide angle reply. The details about your iMac and the OS X say more; without them, more questions arise.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I seem to have lost all of my playlists and more than half my songs. How do I get them back? Dont know what I did wrong? Please Help

I seem to have lost all my original playlists and more than half my songs. How do I get them back, where did I go wrong?
If I was to press "restore" does this wipe everything off my library? I always thought that you could never loose songs? That they were always stored somewhere
    in there. Please help,

If those tabs aren't in History > Recently Closed Tabs or Windows then they are probably lost.
You can try to search them in the History if you haven't bookmarked them.
Using the "Show my windows and tabs from last time" setting is a more reliable way to restore session data.
    * Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

  • Since downloading spotify trial (one month), i seem to have lost itunes and my music from my dock. how do i bring my music back

Since downloading Spotify app (trial for 1 month), i seem to have lost itunes from my dock, including my music. How do i bring it & all my music back. the last time i saved it to my hard drive was 3 months ago.

If you start iTunes from Launchpad or Applications. It will Show the icon on the desktop. Right mouse click select Options and Keep in Dock.
When you say your music has dissapeared is it removed from your hard drive?
username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music is the path to my music on the local hard drive?
If it is missing from itunes then redrag the Music folder back into iTunes and your music should reappear.
Or did you mean something else?

  • HT201250 I've just used an external drive to back up my Mac with Time Machine. I have Lion, but didn't click and check the "Encrypt Backup Disc". What should I do? Can I delete the external drive and start again, or can I encrypt later?

I've just used an external drive to back up my Mac with Time Machine. I have Lion, but didn't click and check the "Encrypt Backup Disc". What should I do? Can I delete the external drive and start again, or can I encrypt later?

I guess if stolen or lost it would protect my "stuff", and if I'm travelling would protect my privacy.
You must understand the purpose and implications of encryption before deciding whether to use it.
Encryption locks your data with a password. If you forget that password, the data is lost beyond any chance of recovery. Neither Apple nor anyone else will be able to help you recover that data if you don't know the password.
By the same token, the password must be strong enough to provide the security you want. For example, if you're the potential target of industrial espionage by a government or large corporation, you need the strongest possible password. To create and manage such a password safely is a task in itself, not to be undertaken lightly.
If you're only concerned about casual snooping by someone with no special skill, a weak, easily-remembered password is appropriate.
But regardless of the strength of the password, if you lose it, the data is gone forever.
Another point to remember is that if you encrypt your data on one storage device, you must also encrypt it on all other storage devices that would be accessible to the same attacker. Otherwise the data isn't protected. For example, if you keep your computer and your backup drive in the same room, and the internal drive of the computer is not encrypted, then there's no point in encrypting the backup drive.

    Good evening,
after upgrading Iphoto 9.5 a page opened requiring to upgrade my library. As it did not work out,for fear of losing all my pictures I  loaded Iphoto 9.4.3  with Time machine but I had lost quite a few photos. As a matter of fact, after searching , I found them In Photo library in 'images' on my hard drive. When I double click, 9.5 appears with all my pictures. Therefore, I would like to use 9.5 just by by clicking on the icon down my finder and  not by being obliged to open my hard drive.
Would you please tell me what I should do. Thank you.
    Best regards,
    Robert

    Huh?
As it did not work out,for fear of losing all my pictures I  loaded Iphoto 9.4.3  with Time machine but I had lost quite a few photos. As a matter of fact, after searching , I found them In Photo library in 'images' on my hard drive. When I double click, 9.5 appears with all my pictures.
So, you have restored 9.4.3 from Time Machine but can see all your pictures in 9.5?
Do you have two version of iPhoto on your Machine?
And if you didn't update the Library, ("as it did not work out,") how can you see things in 9.5?
So, whatever set up you have is confusing.

  • Upgrading to Mavericks seems to have lost my windows 7 dual boot up capability.  How can I get it back?

After having installed with Bootcamp windows 7 a couple years ago, upgrading to mavericks seems to have lost that capability despite windows being installed in its own partition.  How can I get this back?

    This was the scenario:
The first time I updated, it was only my music that was lost.
When I got my music back, I lost my apps.
When I got my apps back, my contacts, notes and photos were lost.
Now I got back everything except for my photos.
(Yes, I restored from backup several times since the first update.)
Do you think if I try restoring from back up, my photos that were taken from my ipod will be restored finally?
    Thank you.
