Time machine server makes client freeze.

I got a macpro server with 10.8.3 and osx server running on the network as a time machine backup.
After the server is a few hours connected to the mac pro client with a gigabit network connection, the client feezes. Not responding to anything.
When I dissconect the network cable, all remains normal.
This happens everyday when I leave the system on overnight.
Does anyone know where to start looking?
Cheers,
Karel.

Thank you,
I turned off the server and disconnected before leaving last night and even then it crashed at 5.50 in the morning... This is what I got. As you can see it cycles trough the same things over and over.
Until it finally frose around  05:50:55,419.
I did a hard reset of the system on 09:43:38,000.
Thanks for any help!

  • Mavericks Time Machine Server - multiple client backups disappear and merge

    Hi there,
In our environment, which is shop environment where many computers are worked on, we use a Mac Pro with roughly 5TB disk space running Mavericks server. Essentially, we rename the computers to be worked on (in the Sharing pane of System preferences), then use Time Machine to connect and backup using a Sharing Only account that exists on the server. The TM backups are verified using Migration Assistant by opening MA and making sure the option to restore is present, without the 'No Backup Volumes found' message, common with TM backups on the network. All OS's are backing up to our server, the oldest being 10.6 and the newest likely being 10.10 now.
Recently, we have noticed some backups seemingly disappear from the server. Just this morning, I looked at a VERY large sparesbundle and got curious.
Upon launching Migration Assistant and opening that very large sparsebundle, I was able to find all the backups that 'dissappeared'. This is very concerning, as all of these backups were verified using MA immediately after having been created.  Migration Assistant is quit, the system shut down, and the computer's work proceeds.
    A few bits of information:
-Computers sometimes come in to our shop (Apple Authorized) not being able to boot, so their storage volume is booted either via target mode or plugged in to another known good mac via a RocketStor Thunderbolt Dock, or simply directly in to another Mac
-if a computer boots it is backed up natively using it's own OS
-All of this takes place using AFP connections, and over an enterprise network, but devices are all plugged in to the same switch (at this point).
There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the disappearance of the backups, and they are very frustrating to attempt to locate when they 'go missing', especially since these backups are only looked for when a HDD is wiped and data is needed....
Any help is appreciated! As stated earlier, we are an Apple warranty authorized shop in a collegiate environment. Thanks all!
    Best,
    Chris

I suggest you turn it back on, at least on the ones you want to back up.
Is this necessary? It seems to do half the backup without it. If I remember correctly I have indexing turned off not only because I don't use it but also because it was hanging up/using a lot of CPU... If I absolutely must I will turn the indexing back on and wait for it to do its dirty business, but I'm a bit reticent in trading my problem for one that I don't really have an interest in solving.

  • Cannot use my Mac Mini server as Time Machine server

    Hello,
May some one can help me...
I try to connect clients to a time Machine server, well it's seems to be a bit difficult, I created user's accounts, computers accounts, group of computers... It works for the update services, but after configuring Time Machine on the server, shared in server admin, in Workgroup manager, file sharing, preference pane, user's services... I can see the volume in time machine preferences, but there is always the same issue, first message is "the disk is not reachable" second "there is a probleme with the network name and password" I tried with different posix, ACLS, with user's password, server admin password, directory admin password... Well I'm a bit tired...
I tried on the server and on a Promise 4To, I can see the shared items folder and the Backups foledr and that the only thing I can do...
Well if some one can help me it will be great for me and for every body arround me...
    Thanks,
    Nicolas

    Hello Peter,
    Thanks for your answer.
There must be something wrong in the different steps I follow.
Firts I set Time machine on the server for each user, shoosing the Volume "SmartStor" (a network volume attached on the Mac Mini server) it creates a "Shared items" folder with a "Backups" folder in.
In Server Admin tools I can see in the AFP services the share point /Backups
In Workgroup Manager I set the Time Machine's preferences for the different computers and computers' group with the path afp://myserver.local/Backups/
At least on my client's computer I can shoose the volume "Backups" "on my server".
And it doesn't work... even with all the logins and password, User's, Dir Admin and Server Admin.
With User's and Dir Admin it runs quickly and tells "the volume is not reachable on account of wrong user's name or password"
With Server Admin login and password it runs indefinitly, nothing occurs ...
Is there something to do in terminal ?
Well I tried to find explanations on the web but I found nothing for the moment... The informations are to set a network volume in Terminal in place of the default one...
'Hope to find soon, I can't stand that something runs for every one but not with me...

  • Time Machine Server backup speed

Has anyone used time machine on OS X 10.5.8 Server to backup 50+ client machines at one time?
We have a project where we will be binding 50 Macs to AD and migrating user data.  We have a process for the migration and will have done extensive testing by the time the migration happens, so if I have any questions about that it will be in a different forum.
We would like to have a solid backup that is easy to restore if we run into issues.  We have Retrospect backups yet the backup server is a Windows 2008 Server and sometimes even restoring small amounts of data can be troublesome.  I would rather not restore a user's account using Retrospect if at all possible.
We don't want to goto each machine and use Carbon Copy Cloner if possible, yet we are looking into using CCC over the network for backups/restores.
One backup plan is to setup a Time Machine server on one of our OD masters with an external RAID.
Next we touch every machine and direct each client to the Time Machine Backup drive on the network and they all start backing up.
How long would you think it takes for 50+ machines averaging 10GB of data to backup using Time Machine on a new Gigabit LAN with CAT 5e cables and a Cisco managed switch setup?
Is there a way in ARD to send a command to set clients to choose a Time Machine Backup server?
If you were in my position and needed to backup 50+ machines in the shortest amount of time with the quickest/easiest restore process, how would you do it?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

    Well SAM
It actually worked. THANKS A BUNCH! I trying again as root, allthough I thought sudo did it.
I needed to first do some repairing (permissions and so on), change the host name and bind all the machines anew to server.
Anyway it finall works. The disk is available form startup prior to ANY login.
So aganin: thank you. I am sorry I can't find how to change the appraisal of your answer from 'helped' to 'solved' to give you more credit(s).

Any modem will work. Note that you will only use your modem to connect your Time Capsule to it using an Ethernet cable, and it will bring the Internet connection to the Time Capsule, so all modems do the same

  • Time Machine Server - external firewire 800 RAID array incompatible??

    Hi all
I originally posted in the wrong forum... so here I go again...
I have an XServe G5 connected to an 8TB RAID array via firewire 800 (running latest version of leopard server) purchased solely to act as a time machine server for a whole bunch of machines. A lot of money and resources went toward this as this is a vital part of our office. One of the machines is a completely decked out Mac Pro with 4x500GB Hard Drives striped for multimedia processing. (Thats why I need a HUGE backup partition on Time Machine)
Now, this was working for about 4 months. Some computers still see the backup array as a destination, but can't write to it, (just sit there for ever "preparing backup") and one machine successfully is still backing up to it.
But for the majority of the machines, when I try to set the Xserve external raid array as a Time Machine destination for the network, it comes up with a yellow "!" sign and "This disk drive may not support Time Machine over the network. Get more information about compatible drives" with a link that points here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306332
As you can see, that was completely not helpful, and now i'm wondering if I'll still have a job after the boss finds out I've just wasted his several thousands of dollars...
When selecting a backup destination for time machine backups, the array appears, but it always says "Failed" with an "i" next to Latest Backup in the system preferences, with the message "Backup volume cannot be found". Thats not true because i've so much as gone to the effort of actually mounting the dang drive in the finder... so its just not looking hard enough!
Here is some info about the external device:
It looks like a PC tower thing, with 8 firewire 800 ports on the back and 8 internal SATA slots. I purchased 8x1TB drives and inserted them in, and software partitioned them to create a giant striped drive (I understand that this might be a little unstable but its just a backup drive).
I daisy chained the firewire 800 ports on the back to output 2 cables, both going in the back of the xserve. Formatted fine, and works a treat. Except for the silly time machine thing....
I think what I am going to do is completely and utterly start again... go nuts one weekend and erase everything, every computer, every wireless router, everything, and start fresh. Since there have been so many little glitches here and there I just want them dead.
Well, if anyone has a quick fix, i'd appreciated it before the weekend

Hi everyone, Just thought I would give you all an update on how things went.
Lets just say that I got everything working fine... this is what I did.
    1. I went through, completely un-raided and formatted the external 8 Bay firewire 800 drive
    2. Completely reformatted XServe and reinstalled fresh (Probably not an option for a few, but I had a spare weekend)
    3. Completely reformatted all client computers and reset all client accounts (Once again, probably not an option for most)
Essentially, I was starting out with a completely virgin setup and setting up for the first time. I installed the firewire 800 drives, and made them into a RAID again. Then installed Leopard server. Brought all the backed up files across, and when I plugged in the drive in Finder, it asked "Do you want to use this as a time machine backup" to which I said "Yes". It proceeded to create a backup.
When that finished, I went into server preferences, and selected the external as a time machine backup for the network. It worked...
I then went about everything like business as usual, and everything worked great. Still going... for now.
So thanks for all that helped, maybe try completely reinstalling everything and it may work.

How can I force Time Machine to make a complete backup of my Hard Drive.  I just installed a new external drive for Backup since my previous one failed.  Now when I back up, Time Machine only backs up my data folder and the Users folder.
When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

Aside from the size of my backup drive, which I will increase at some point, I'd really like to have time machine backing up all system folders, especially Applications. How to I reset this hidden exclusions?

  • Time machine to make the backup of an external disk

    Hi community
I’m using time machine to make backups of my Mac as many people do, but now I’d like to know how can I use it to backup on a different time machine disk, the content of an external disk. don’t know if I’m clear enough, that’s a complex question and my english is what it is.
I will reformulate just in case. I have a 1Tb external disk that I want to backup from time to time. So the idea was to plug that disk on my MacbookPro, plug a 2Tb disk that I would use as backup or time machine disk (not the usual one that I’m using for backing up my Mac), and that the Mac will automatically backup one to the other.
right now I’m making security copies every 3 months just by copying the whole content of the first disk to the 2nd one, but it takes 24 hours to do it, and since the content to be copied, does not change a lot, I think that backup program will improve it quite a lot.
    thanks in advance.
    regards
PD: if you think of a more efficient way to do it not based on Apple’s Time Machine, I’m all ears specially if it’s simple and user friendly.

  • Deleting Backups from Time Machine to Make Room

Deleting Backups from Time Machine to Make Room
So, I went into my 1.5 terabyte back-up drive and deleted a number of the TM backups because the drive was getting too full. (I also use that drive to store “permanent” photo files in other folders.)
Evidently, the computer does not recognize the deletions because the drive shows the same miniscule amount of space as it did prior to the deletions.
I know people have talked about using “actions” button in the gear icon. However, I can’t find that.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Tek

    Thanks for the reply, V.K.
    Unfortunately, I deleted via the finder and then emptied the trash. :-}
I know now, (after the fact) that this was the wrong thing to do. However, I didn’t find a “delete” option within TM.
It all seemed “logical” at the time. . . and quite frankly, still does. Why the heck is TM so difficult to control? Why can’t one just set it for X number of backups and have an easy to access delete button? (grumble, grumble)
I looked at the FAQs, but am still not clear on how to find the “action” button. I am using a laptop with no “right click” feature. The mouse is a one piece model.
My backup drive is directly attached, but, only when I want to backup since I work on a MB pro laptop.
    So please:
    How do I correct this?
Do I need to format the backup drive and partition? I don’t want/need so many backups cluttering my drive. I need space for permanent photo archives which are very large. These are now merely in a separate folder on the backup drive.

  • What items do you delete from backup on time machine to make more space available

What items do you delete from back up on time machine to make more space?

There's no need to do that unless Time Machine has reported a Disk Full alert. In this case you can:
    1. Delete older entries using the Time Machine application to free up sufficient space.
    2. Get a new and larger Time Machine backup drive to replace the old one.
    3. Erase the backup drive and start over.

  • Back up Mac Server with Time Machine Server installed on the same Time Machine Server

I want to back up several Workstations (“Workstations 1-4” in diagram below) and a Mac OS X Server (“MacMini Server” in diagram below) that runs “Time Machine Server” on that same “Time Machine Server.”
    Is this possible?
The MacMini server doesn’t seem to find the “Time Machine Server” for backups. I read that this is due to the fact that Time Machine backups via network are organized in another way than “normal” Time Machine backups are.
MacOS server is running MacOS 10.8.5 with server app v2.2.1(169)-
    workstations are running 10.10.1, 10.9.5 and 10.8.4

The Time Capsule and Time Machine will automatically keep backups for each Mac separate.
A user on one Mac will not be able to "see" the backups of the other Mac.
You can add a few more Macs if you wish. 4 or 5 Macs would probably be a practical limit, depending on the size of the hard drive in the Time Capsule.

  • Time machine server / Bonjour

At my workplace we have Mac OS X Server Leopard 10.5.3 that we use as a Time Machine server, with a share point with the option "Enable as Time Machine backup destination" checked. Until now my Time Machine worked very well, both when my computer was connected to our lab's Airport or wired-ethernet.
But now there is a new institute-wide wlan, from which I can contact our server (with ssh, afp, ...). When I connect to this network Time Machine doesn't backup automatically anymore, and the backup fails. In my system.log I discovered the following:
/System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[3899]: Network mountpoint /Volumes/time not owned by backupd... remounting
/System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[3899]: [SnapshotUtilities remountVolumeRef] url could not be resolved via BonJour
/System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[3899]: Failed to remount network volume.
/System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[3899]: Backup failed with error: 19
So, apparently the problem is the fact that Bonjour is not working over the institute-wide network, which personally I find kind of logical, or at least it's difficult for me to find reasons to convince the upper levels to enable it. I also don't see any reason why Time Machine actually 'needs' bonjour, since it can connect the server, by ip address, hostname. And I can mount the time machine mount 'by hand' with 'Connect to server..." from Finder.
Is there anybody who knows (without destroying my current Time Machine archive) some way to change this behavior of Time machine so that it doesn't need Bonjour (by changing some setting, or putting a hard ip address in a plist or something) ?
    Thx,
    Werner Van Geit

    Hi,
Actually I don't know, the IT service over here is quite of 'black box', and it takes quite some time to get some information. I'm quite sure that even don't know what Bonjour is, they install all kinds of devices without actually knowing much about all the settings, so it will be **** of a job to get Time Machine working if Bonjour is necessary. But like I've already said, I don't think Bonjour should be necessary to use Time Machine, but I could be wrong.

  • Why does time machine backup seems to freeze iMac

Have just attached external hard drive to my new iMac - backup appears to have worked (although no confirmation). However, when clicking on icon in desktop, time machine is entered then freezes. Only way to get out is by disconnecting the hard drive from the USB port. Additionally, even if I'm not in Time Machine, but with the hard disk connected, I appear to be unable to turn the iMac off.
What am I doing wrong - have I not left things long enough to backup?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Sounds to me your hard drive doesn't have the appropriate firmware to be compatible with your version of Mac OS X. See my FAQ*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/firewirebug2.html
Fortunately you can take the hard drive out and put it inside another case that does work. You can purchase these cases from http://www.macsales.com/ even in the UK.

  • OS X Server 4 - Time Machine Restore of client Mac

Can anyone confirm that a client Mac when booted into its Recovery HD is able to perform a full system Restore over the network from a Time Machine back up on OS X Server 4 (Yosemite)? Are the user's login credentials accepted and a list of back ups with dates presented to choose from?
OS X Server 2.2.5 (Mountain Lion) works fine, but OS X Server 3.2.2 (Mavericks) has always given me fits where the client Mac's login credentials would result in the following error.
"There was a problem connecting to the server "sever.local. The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again"
I was told by Apple Support back on 7/16/2014 Engineering was aware of the issue, but had no ETA for a solution. At the time I was running OS X Server 3.1 but each and every update since then including the most current Mavericks version (3.2.2) has had the above issue. I'm just wondering if Apple fixed it in OS X Server 4.x.x.

  • Lion Server Time Machine with Lion Client

I have had a Lion Server running for a couple of months with no problem acting as a repository for Time Machine Backups from 4 Snow Leopard Clients.  I have two external USB hard drives partioned for each user's Time Machine.
Today I upgraded the clients to Lion, and now Time Machine on all of the clients cannot see the partioned disks on the Lion Server.  Therefore, I have no disk to select for the client's destination.
The Lion Server is updated to most recent and at 10.7.2.  The File Sharing switch is on and nothing has been changed as for as permissions or security on the external disks.  The external disks show up in the Finder and can see contents and info in them.  They also show up as share points on the Server App.
The clients are now also Lion and updated to the most recent.
Seems pretty basic, don't know what else to do.

Finally figured it out on my own 2 weeks later.
You have to open the Lion Server app and then turn on Time Machine on the server.
It will then ask what disk you want to use, which in my case was an external 2tb USB.
My confusion was that this is not they way you had to do it on Snow Leopard Server.
On SLS, I never used Time Machine, but had to partition my external disk individually for each user.  e.g.  2tb disk was partioned into 4 separate volumes.  This was necessary to keep one user's Time Machine backup from taking up the whole disk and not leaving room for the other users.
You then setup these partitions as Time Machine Sharepoint which would then show up as a choice on the users machine under Time Machine preferences, select disks.
Therefore, under SLS, a user could select from any number of partions to backup to on the server.  On Lion Server, it appears you do not have a choice and can only backup to the one disk you selected on the Server App.
At the risk of carrying on a conversation with myself online, my concern is now about limiting the size of the individual user's sparse bundle to again keep one user from taking up the entire disk for their Time Machine.  I guess that is another fight for another day.
