Time Machine Service, anyone using?
I'm a newb with this server, and just setting up a pair of new mac mini servers. I set one with Time Machine Service on, but some of my macs can't see it, or sometimes it can, but then can't. I also have one that is counting up like 3.78 GB of 3.78 GB --> 3.79 GB of 3.79GB with the progress bar at 100%. That's odd
Perhaps I've misconfigured something, or need Time Capsule ? Or is this just something that's not used (I never heard of it before, but it sure sounds like a great idea!)

Time Machine and download CarbonCopyCloner (freeware) and make a full bootable clone of your HardDrive. Should be sufficient.

Does anyone know why since upgrading to ML notes are not visible in Time Machine. They used to be part of mail and could be recovered from Time machine but since ML I don't seem to be able to access notes in Time Machine. Any help would be useful.

Mail doesn't support notes. If you use iCloud, you have them in it because Notes is an application -

Time Machine Service backup it's self?
Ok I have the Time Machine service setup and running and my Client systems can see it and use it.
My server it's self however can not see the service.
I want to use TM to backup the server into the same Time Machine Backups folder and not the root level of another drive.
Is this posible? Seams like it should be as simple as doing the same setup as the clients...In order to back up the configuration and state of some services the server needs them to termporarily be turned off. This includes the backing up of Time Machine.
So in order to back up the Time Machine configuration and details about what computers it is backing up where, the server would need to turn off the Time Machine backup service. But if it's turned off, it can't use it to back things up.
Similarly, imagine you needed to restore the backup. To view the backups you would need the Time Machine backup service to be working. But you can't overwrite the configuration and status information of a service which is turned on, because that would confuse the process doing the serving. But if the process is turned off, you can't use it to restore the backup.
So do what Linc said: use the System Preferences panel to back the computer up, and don't back it up to the same device you're backing up its Time Machine clients to. -
How to allow Time Machine service to back up to a NAS?
I have Mavericks and OS Server 3 installed and working without too much trouble (slight Caching Server 2 question) but want to tweak the Time Machine service.
I have two private networks in my setup each with their own routers, but the server can see both to service Time Machine. I was previously using Time Machine on a Synology DiskStation but it was hard wired to one of the subnets only, so to get all the clients to back up theu had to switch networks.
I tried setting up the TM destination on the NAS, but the clients could not actually back up and the destination folder was "(null)" instead of "Time Machine" (that I created and pointed at). I would really like to use this setup to allow clients on both networks to use a single Time Machine setup, but would prefer that (at least) the sparsebundles are on the NAS for a little RAID 5 love.

I have a Mac Mini Server with the Mavericks and running, but I can not define how disk for TimeMachine folders in there NAS (/ Volume_1) here. They appear to "Zero KB"!
But I can effectively define an external drive (/ TM_Caparica) connected directly to the Mac Mini via USB port for TimeMachine.
Beginning to believe that not - in fact - we can use a mapped drive for the server on the local network as the destination for the backup TimeMachine.

Time Machine Service - Run scripts after backup
I am running Mavericks Server (10.9.5), server version 3.2.2
The server is used as a backup destination for a lot of Macs, and I am trying to create a complementary service that keeps track of all of the incoming backups and logs all backup events.
Is there any way to have a script execute whenever the Time Machine service completes a backup, or for that matter, and way to tell when a backup is running or has completed?
The options I have thought of so far are:
1. Script that monitors the logs to look for appropriate events
2. Run script on timer that scans the backup folder and looks for new backups
Neither of these seems ideal to mean, so I was hoping someone might have a better idea.

Can I restore photo files from Time Machine without the use of an external drive? While I was transferring photos back and forth from a thumb drive something went haywire and my IPhoto was wiped clean! When I click on Time Machine I see all the dated pages (without an external storage drive connected), go back to a date where all my photo files are there, click "restore", and I get the message: "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in file cant be read or written (error code - 36)"

How can I use my time capsule as a time machine backup without using it wirelessly and not as a wireless router?

It is better to have the TC as part of the main network in bridge. You do not need to run wireless.
If you want to use the TC plugged in by ethernet and still use wireless for internet, that is possible but the setup is rather more complicated.. the computer must not get confused about which device to use as a gateway or dns server.

I need to add.. a USB drive would be cheaper, faster and more reliable. It is really poor use of a TC. -

How can I setup a time machine back up using a external hard drive connected to the Airport extreme? Even better for time managment purposes I want to use the Eithernet Thunderbolt connection for the first back up and then through the wifi there after for daily routine Time Machine back ups.
You can attach a hard drive, but Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port at the AirPort Extreme are not supported by Apple, so it's not possible to say what your actual results might be.
If you decide to try this, it would be wise to have a secondary backup plan in place as well.

iTunes does prompt when it is going to erase a device, and the message is clear.
She said in her message that she was able to successfully sync the old ipad. This indicated to me that itunes wiping the data was not an issue, because either it had been setup at the apple store (in which case it doesn't actually wipe the ipad despite saying it will*) (*based on a single case I saw), or because the itunes media folder was migrated.
Furthermore, my solution was to tell her how to backup her ipad (by either doing it manually, or as a last resort, by deleting the corrupt backup -- that she couldn't access anyway.)
I got that last part of the instructions from the "Taking Control of your iphone" book which I found samples of when I did a google search for "corrupted backup itunes".
She marked this as a solution, so it worked for her. -
If I completely fill my hard drive 500Gb how time machine will keep working having 1Tb of total space [externak hard drive], I mean I have to delete my hard drive but how I keep my previous information on time machine and keep using it with new information?
Time Machine does not provide archival storage.
If you delete a file from your disk it will eventually be deleted from your TM backup without any notice to you.
You need a second external disk to use for archival storage.
You also need a third disk for backups of the second disk. -
The error that I am getting is this "Time Machine can't use the disk image because it can't be written to." Any ideas on the fix for this? When I go to the Time Capsule my Macbook Pro shows that it is locked, I think I did something wrong, but can't figure how to unlock it to see if that fixes it.
As far as we know, Time Machine cannot write to a disk image. It needs to write directly to the Time Capsule disk.

Most likely, you got this message before all this started:
What that doesn't explicity say is, the backups failed the verification. When that happens, Time Machine marks the sparse bundle as damaged and won't back up to it anymore (even if Repair Disk can't find the problem). See #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details. -
10.9 Server, you do not have the necessary read.write permissions for Time Machine Service
Setting up 10.9 Server's Time Machine service when I try to backup from a computer on my LAN I get "you do not have the necessary read,write and [sic] append privileges on the selected network backup disk."
I am logging in as the admin user for the OS X Server install.
