Time Machine showing different excluded directories in each account?

I have two accounts on my Mac Mini running the latest OS X 10.6.  I have Time Machine backing up my files to a Time Capsule.  When I opened up the Options for Time Machine in my account, I see this:
When I open the same dialog box in my other account, I see this instead:
Notice how the two lists are different.  Some items appear in both windows (e.g. ~/Downloads in my account is the same thing as /Users/timur/Downloads from my wife's account).  But other things appear only in one window.
Can anyone explain this?  How am I supposed to know what's really being backed up?

The symbol ~ means the home folder of the logged-on user.
See the tan box in #10 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details.

I entered Iphoto for my user and only photo up until 2012 were in the library.  I thought the restore would do the incremental Time Machine backups too.....

Because the drive was disconnected Time Machine made a local snapshot on your Mac.

  • Time machine showing some files as directories

I just lost as bunch of files and tried to use time machine to restore the directory to one from earlier today. After copying I found that not all of the files copied over. Then I went to look at the individual files in the folder (also on time machine) - many of the files themselves are showing up as empty folders instead of files. I checked back several versions and it's the same thing. I noticed this seems to happen mostly with my .m files in xcode source directories but I haven't checked each one.
Luckily I saved another backup on an sd card a few days earlier so after a few hours of piecing directories together I'm ok... But now I'm wondering if I can actually rely on time capsule and I'm very concerned - has anyone else had this happen?

    Louie1981 wrote:
The .m files are just flat UTF8 text files, nothing special - except in an obj-c source they contain most of the code. So when the most important ones don't back up it's a big problem. I don't know if for some reason Time Machine backs up xcode source differently
It does skip the build folders (or at least used to), but that's the only difference I know of.
couldn't figure out how to get a screenshot from time machine
It's so bizzare (and stupid)  -- Shift+Cmd+4 to print a selected portion doesn't work, but Shift+Cmd+3 prints the whole screen!   Then you have to crop it.   Several BRs/ERs later . . . no change.
This is a really unusual one;  I've never seen anything quite like it reported.
    A few more possibilities:
You might want to try copying one or more of the affected folders elsewhere, to see what happens.  Maybe just some of the files in question, too.
Sounds like it doesn't affect all the files/folders -- any pattern to the ones it does?
There's a rare situation where a folder gets damaged somehow (no clue what or how), and either everything in it gets backed-up every time, or new items do, but no changes.  That doesn't sound like quite what you're seeing, but the fix is to rename the folder, create a new one, and copy the contents.  That might be worth a shot.
EDIT:  You might also want to look at the messages during a backup.  Usually any files TM has a problem with will cause it to fail with a message naming the culprit, but on occasion it completes and just logs a (usually cryptic) message.

  • Time Machine has been excluding items for hours... and counting!

I have been using time capsule for several years now. But today I brought a new hard drive to use with Time Machine. It's a Western Digital My Book Network drive.
Plugged it in selected the new disk and started to back up. For hours now it has been 'Excluding items..'. It has apparently excluded over 5 million items! Why is it doing this?
I've checked the list of files to exclude and it's just set to exclude the desktop and the Downloads folder.
I don't understand why it has been excluding items so long. Nothing had been copied to the external disk yet. If anyone could help me I'd be much apreciative!
    Thanks, George!

Well now I have this new hard drive
You may avoid some confusion and/or problems by not calling it that. It's a +Network Attached Storage+ (NAS) device, or +network drive.+ Yes, it contains a hard drive, but OSX handles it very differently for many purposes. You've already seen that you can't format it via Disk Utility, for example.
I'd rather not have erase the whole disk and put the wanted data back onto it.
If you can copy that 50GB elsewhere temporarily, erase the drive, then copy it back, that may be much faster and easier than deleting the Backups.backupdb folder. It contains at least several hundred thousand, perhaps over a million items, that OSX must delete one at a time. It may also have permissions or other problems.
Erasing, however, takes only a few moments.
This is why we recommend giving Time Machine its own, exclusive space. See #3 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Are you putting other things on the network drive? If so, you may have problems there, too, as Time Machine will eventually use all the empty space available to it.
Those backups will be inside a rather odd container called a +sparse bundle.+ If you're really on Leopard, as per your signature, you can limit the maximum size of the sparse bundle, per #A8 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
But since you've posted in the +Snow Leopard+ Time Machine forum, if you're on 10.6.3 or later, that won't "stick," so you may want to see if you can partition the network drive via WD's software (another thing you can't do on a network drive via +Disk Utility,+ unfortunately).

  • Time Machine ignores my exclude list

I recently changed my exclude list to include a bunch of directories and remove some others. Problem is, Time Machine is blithely ignoring my new settings... still backs up the old directories that are in my current exclude list and, more importantly, is NOT backing up the directories I removed from that list.
Is there a workaround for this?

Still no luck. It's very weird...
I reformatted my Time Machine external USB disc, removed the Time Machine pref file, rebooted the computer and set it all up again.
My disc reports as having 96GB in use. Excluded from this is a 25GB VMWare virtual machine and a 500MB directory containing Subversion checkouts (no point in backing those up).
Total size of backup according to the exclusions list page is 70.33GB... except the current backup progress bar is telling me xGB out of 80.79GB!
And when it's all over, my Downloads directory isn't backed up... the subversion checkouts are still backed up... the VMWare file (all 25GB of it) is still backed up and is included in every single backup whenever I've finished using it.
I have to conclude that this particular feature is well and truly broken.

  • Time Machine shows it's icon on my boot disk as well as on external USB dri

My problem started a couple of days ago when I bought a new larger USB-drive for backup purposes.
I believe it has something to do with permissions. Because when I read the disktool report I get warnings that 3 different SUID-files has been changed and that they not will be repaired.
Secondly when Time Machine counts it always says "26,7 GB of 26,7 GB" and not "26,7 GB of 138 GB"
I mean it doesn't says "26,7 GB of 26,7 GB" all of the time but counts upwards.
Another peculiar thing is that I am not able to Log out in a normal way. The screen is just the blue surface so I have to use the Power button to turn off.
I have also found errors like this:
My harddisk-4 mds[35]: (Error) Import: importer:0x867a00 Importer start failed for 505 (kr:268435459 (ipc/send) invalid destination port)
What is mds by the way ?

Just to clear the main issue with my bootdisk showing the Time Machine Icon. This problem remains even though I don't have my real Time Machine external drive hooked into the computer.
I have investigated the results from the disktool report more carefully this time.Because I have a swedish system I can't just copy and paste here.
But the problems are that 4 different SUID-files has been changed and they will not be repaired , as the report tells me.
    1) System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad
    2) usr/bin/setregion
    3) System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner
    4) System/Library/Printers/IOMs/LPRIOM.plugin/contents/MacOs/LPRIOMhelper
As I have mentioned I am not able to log out in a normal way without meeting the blue surface over the screen.
I created another user account and the result was the same here : I was not able to log out again.
However I am able to restart the computer but the startup time is very much longer than it used to be.
I have looked in my console.log but it was too old, from 2007, because I have probably deleted those files with Cocktail.
But when I took a look in the system.log I have found strange things- especially for the times when I have tried to boot my computer
but only got the fan louder and louder before I interupted by turning off with the power button.
Look at the time 09.21 and see if you can understand any of the information given there.
Before this I also want to mention how my bootup diskpermission preferences are.

  • Why does time machine show the backup failed

The time machine icon in the menu bar keeps showing up with a "!" in the middle of it, which is suppose to mean the back up failed.
Yet when I go to System Preference, it shows the backup succeeded.
The menu bar shows the last successful back up was on Sept 13.
System Preferences shows the last successful backup was an hour ago.  (15 Sept.)
How do I get these two to agree with each other?
Rebooting the computer doesn't seem to help.
    I'm running 10.9.4 now.

    LonerT:
Thanks for looking at the HomeSharing problem
I have three discussions open that are related.  The first one shows that the ATV appears to open the extra DAAP connections, which in turn appears to be related to Homesharing problem.
    Airport opens multiple DAAP connections
Numerous ATV DAAP ports to MacBook Pro
Cannot turn off Homesharing to AppleTV: IPv6 connections remain
This one (not mine) points at the Bonjour Sleep Proxy Service as being involved in the DAAP problem.
DHCP conflicts between AppleTV and Airport Extreme repeater
And this is the "other side" of the problem, which I have also experienced
Apple TV homesharing keeps dropping out ...
I note that my AppleTV started out with a DHCP address of 10.0.1.16, it jumped to 10.0.1.20 and then migrated up, one address at a time, to 10.0.1.25.
Given the number of systems I have on my subnet, if they are handed out in order, and given that I just moved from 192.168.1.0/24 private space, the highest address should be around 12.
I have two Apple TVs.  One on Wireless remote from the ATX and connected to an Airport Express and one connected via ethernet directly to the AEX.  I don't use the remote one.  It should not have been turned on (activated) for at least two weeks, yet the AEX is still sending out ARP requests for the last IP address that it had and my laptop still associates the AEX MAC with the last address assigned to the remote ATV.

  • Hard Drive and Time Machine backup Different Sizes

I had a lot of difficulty getting Time Machine to work with my new Time Capsule. It seems to work now but I noticed that on the initial backup the size of the backup data on Time Capsule was roughly 148 GB and my hard drive size is roughly 159 GB. If I were to do a backup would I discover that some of my data is missing? Or is it normal? I have not excluded anything from the backup. Thanks.

I sorted out the problem on my end, and perhaps the same thing will you help Gadifer. In my Aperture preferences, Library Location was incorrect - for some reason there are two. In my case it should be ~/Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary, whereas it had become ~/Pictures/My Pictures/Aperture Library.aplibrary (I don't recall changing in manually, and wasn't aware that there were two). When I check them in Finder, I see that the former is several GB, and therefore my actual library, while the latter is only 538 KB.

  • Time machine on different Volumes

    Hey there,
maybe it is just me but is it only possible to choose one Volume as a Time machine Backup destination for all the connected users? I used to setup different volumes as a Time Machine backup destination so that every user had his/her own partition to use. So that not one  person would wind up using the whole hdd. Let's say I want to backup 20 people. How do I setup Time Machine in Server app to backup 5 people to Volume 1 let's say and the next 5 to Volume 2 etc. Or even better. Can't I just use mulitple partition as a possible Time Machine backup destination as I used to in SL Server.
    Thanks for the help

    Hi!
I have a similar problem. Everything worked fine in Snow Leopard Server, and the configuration (using several shared TM volumes) survived the Lion Server upgrade. Now, when I want add another TM share, I noticed I couldn't.
Still hoping to find a solution in Lion Server, than 'downgrade' (upgrade) to SL Server 10.6.
I sincerely hope that a Apple product manager reads our concerns.

  • Time machine shows larger hard drive, so never deletes old backups and maxed out my drive

So I back up my Mac Pro to a Drobo Gen 2.  There is a 3tb and 3 2tb drives in it.  When Time Machine backs up, it says there is a 11.88 out of 17.59 available, which isn't true.  It actually ran out of room during a back up b/c it's putting so much stuff on there.  There is only 238.70 left. (the 3 TB drive is not used in the Drobo system, but is there in case a drive goes bad.)   My Mac Pro has 4 TB in it, and there's about 1TB left on it, so the Drobo is showing 5.19 is used, and only the 238.70 left, so all the rest is TM.  TM is suppose to delete older backups when disc is getting full.  But it's not b/c it thinks there is plenty of room.  How do I get TM to see the proper drive space, or is there a way to have TM only do a certain number of back ups then start erasing.  I'm not really tech saavy, so whoever can help and speak my language, that would be great!

To clarify, this all happened under Snow Leopard as I had said. My profile lists Tiger, since I haven't cared to update my personal profile since using that OS, and in fact I still use Tiger among other versions. I manage a lot of users. And I never got to upgrade to Mountain Lion on this system, as explained in the post above. So I don't see the confusion.
I don't think the model of Mac makes a difference for this type of problem, but in case it does, the incident was on a 2010 Intel iMac with a 4TB hard drive and 8GB of RAM. I would have mentioned that if this was a problem with hardware specific to the model of Mac. But this is more of a universal issue.
But to stay on topic, I'm guessing my old backups are toast. But if anybody has any experience with recovering from Time Machine deleting their old backups, I would be happy to hear from them. In the meantime, I am going to try to do some old fashioned file recovery, and see what I can salvage.

  • Time Machine shows no last backup date or oldest backup date

    Hi,
Sorry for the long title and if this question has already been posted, a search didn't show it up. I'm running leopard 10.5.6 on my iMac 2.4ghz intel, and the time machine icon in the menu bar has stopped showing the date of the last backup and when I check in sys pref no date info is shown for the most recent of the oldest.
Anyone have any idea how to cure this.
    Thanks.
    Jez.

I have been using TM for about a month with a new LaCie d2 Quadra. I do not know how this is calibrated for dates. When I activate TM it shows today. For anything back from there it dates everything January 17, 2009 6:45 PMCDT until it goes back to February. In the spot indicating the latest backup it is Jan 17 09 6:45 PMCDT for today. What do you think is responsible for time and date being the same and the actual backups are dated with the wrong date going back until clicking back in time it's the Jan. date until March 20,2009 January 17,2009 6:45 AMCDT. I tried the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist idea. No change.

  • Time Machine plist file excluded external volumes

Mac OS 10.8, 10.9, Time Machine.
Posting here is my final step after a few hours of research. I am trying to find out whether Time Machine stores the names of excluded external volumes anywhere -- those volumes that one enters manually in the Time Machine exclusions options window. They are not in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist. I have searched my Mac via "find" in Terminal as superuser and not found any other plist files that contain the name "timemachine" that contain this information, either. I've seen several apparently erroneous comments online that the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file contains this information, but in my own systems, at least, it does not.
Nor does the following command reveal this information:
    mdfind "com_apple_backup_excludeItem = 'com.apple.backupd'"
Pondini's excellent Time Machine resource states, with regard to the Time Machine GUI: "Excluded External Volumes (shown in black) are placed there automatically unless removed by the user, and do not appear in the plist."
My guess is that because Time Machine excludes external volumes by default, that it doesn't need a plist to store that information, and only cares about them if you delete them from the excludes list in the preferences window.
ADDITIONAL INFO: I am also aware of the com.apple.metadata:com_apple_backup_excludeItem metadata. I haven't been able to determine for certain what creates it, but my guess is Time Machine, at least as regards volumes.

Hi! I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to Mac OS, I have used True Crypt for a long time, you seem to know what you are talking about and I was just wondering if you have an easy answer for me, as I understand only 1/2 of what you wrote on your first post and other wise am lost.
I just want to know if TM works for my needs or if am doom to find another back up software.
I have a simple backup partition in my Mac Book and I store sensitive data in it, TM is backing up my computer now and that is fine, it also seems to back up my encrypted (with True Crypt) partition, but I read and read and read posts and now am confused and not sure if TM will actually back up the changes I do in the files inside the encrypted partition in my Mac Book. Or does it just back up the encrypted file without modifications inside?
If you could explain me this with an easy answer it would be fantastic! thank you!!

  • Restore with install DVD and Time machine backup that excludes system

Hi, I need restore my PB G4.
I backed up my data using TM but excluding all system files. Is there a possibillity to reinstall the system with the DVD and then rebuild the individual accounts using Time machine?

Yes, you have several options: (In all cases Mac OS 10.5 Leopard is required as previous OS X versions can not work with Time Machine backups.)
*Full Restore Via Migration Assistant & Time Machine*
You can use the installation DVDs that came with your Mac and reinstall Leopard (Mac OS 10.5). During the installation process you will be asked if you would like to Migrate data over from your Time Machine backups. The advantage here is that you start with fresh system software. The disadvantage is that you may lose many of the personal preferences/settings that had been established with the previous system. But this may be only a minor inconvenience to reestablish these. Depending on whether you choose to migrate your applications over as well, you may be required to reinstall any 3rd-party software or standalone Apple programs. Don’t forget to run Software Update once the initial installation is complete to bring your system up to date. Using Disk Utility at this point to repair any permissions issues is advised as well.
*Full Restore Via Time Machine Only*
Alternatively, you can use the installation DVDs to do a full system restore. Insert the installation DVD. When the welcome window appears, go to the Utilities menu and select “Restore System From Backup…” and choose the drive that your Time Machine backups are on. Then select the date of the backup you would like to restore from. This will completely erase your internal drive and restore your system to a relatively same condition it was in on the date of the backup you choose. (See this article for a list of files that TM does not restore, http://shiftedbits.org/2007/10/31/time-machine-exclusions/) The advantage here is that you retain many of the personal preferences/settings that had been established with the previous system. Additionally, no further installation of 3rd-party software is required. The disadvantage is that BECAUSE you retain many of the personal preferences, settings, and system files that had been present with the previous system, you run the risk of reintroducing problems you experienced with the previous installation, including any issues that necessitated the OS reinstall in the first place. Using Disk Utility at this point to repair any permissions issues is advised as well.
    *Full Backup After Restore*
Bear in mind that in all cases Time Machine will perform a full backup after a full restore. This is normal. Time Machine will resume incremental backups after the full backup has completed. To view previous backups, Control-click or right-click the Time Machine icon in your Dock or Option-click the Time Machine menu extra and Choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disks," then select your previous backup volume. You will enter Time Machine and be able to browse your previous back ups and restore files. (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338)
    Hope this helps.

  • Time Machine shows Backup Delayed

My time capsule / time machine have been working perfectly
Totally hands off, hourly backups etc etc
Now I have the problem that every backup is delayed as the backup disk is not available
Once I select the backup disk manually the hourly backups resume as normal
When I re-start the problem is back.
So unless I remember to manually select the time machine disk I get no backups
This was working perfectly, before I restored some files from the time machine
    Help

When did you start seeing this issue? Have you downloaded Mac OS X v10.6.8 and Mac OS X v10.6.8 Supplemental Update? If you plan to upgrade to OS X Lion, you will need Mac OS X v10.6.8 Supplemental Update but I must be honest with you:
Early adopters to OS X Lion, like myself, have found issues like the one you're having with Time Machine on OS X Lion. Backups are showing as "!" in the menu bar and error messages "Backup Delayed: Time Machine could not find backup disk" and Time Machine isn't keeping records of past backups. When I noticed this once installing OS X Lion at first run of using the new OS, I had to reformat and erase my external 500GB G-Drive Mobile FireWire 800 drive and the issue still hasn't been fixed.
If deleting the corrupt preference doesn't work, try submitting feedback on Apple's Support page for Time Machine by visiting the link provided:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/timemachine.html
The nice thing about the transition between OS X Snow Leopard and OS X Lion is the OS installs itself over Snow Leopard without you losing any of your files unless you find a way to do a "clean install".
