TIme machine - size of HD doubled after restoring a backup

Hi there,
I think I have an issue with Time Machine. I had to restore my HD, and after the backup the size of the drive has suddenly doubled. I suspect TM created saved a copy of the backup on the HD, but I can't find, so I guess I might be an hidden file somewhere. Do you know if this is possible? If so, can I delete the backup file? I basically lost 100+ GB which I'd like to have back...
Thanks for you help!

That erases your internal HD, which gives it a new UUID, which means Time Machine treats it like a new drive, and backs-up everything on it: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338
That was supposed to be fixed in Snow Leopard, but obviously wasn't.

Migration Assistant (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant) is the tool that you would use to restore backups from older Macs to another Mac.
Details are here:   http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html   The same info applies for Mavericks and Yosemite.   If you are saying that this is a "no go".....where are you getting stuck?  What error messages do you see?

  • Time machine wont continue backing up after restore

    hey all,
i had to do a restore after boot camp crashed on me and i lost my 10 Gig of space which i chose to partition. more to the point, i migrated from a time Machine backup to get my mac running the same way it was before i restored only one problem remains... when time machine tries to backup it does not carry on backing up from before i restored, instead it chooses to try and backup everything that is currently on my macs hard-drive (300 Gig) i just want it to backup changed files... just like before.
Other wise everything else is fine, time machine even works and i can go into the time machine interface and restore old files which i have deleted. This is such a nuisance can anyone help?
    Thanks.

I'm interpreting what you are saying as a reinstall of the system software followed by a migration of your user data from the Time Machine backup. The better procedure is to restore the whole system from the Time Machine backup (done by accessing the restore option from the menu on the install disk). I believe then you wouldn't have had this issue. The essence of the problem is that Time Machine thinks you have migrated user data to a new system and so is backing up the whole new system. I don't know what you can do about that. It is possible that the fact the system looks physically different (ie you don't have the partitioned hard drive you used to have) is a deal breaker for Time Machine.
But it's certainly worth checking the computer name. You find that by opening System Preferences and clicking the Sharing icon. At the top of the page is a box labelled Computer Name. That needs to be the same as the name when the backups were made. You can confirm the name when the backups were made by going into the backup volume via Finder. There will be a folder called Backups.backupd. Double click that and there is a folder with the Computer Name at the time of the backups. As I say, these have got to be the same for Time Machine to continue to use the same backup directory.

  • Time Machine  Problem with Apple Programs after Restore from A&I

Ok here is my situation. I originally did an Archive and Install before Installing Leopard. I was having performance issues with Photobooth and Time Machine. So, I decided to back everything up and do an Full Restore from Time Machine. I resotred from the Utility menu within the Leopard boot disc. However, after the restore ALL of my Apple programs were missing from Finder and the Dock. Including mail, itunes, photobooth, keynote etc..All iwork, ilife and everything else that came pre bundled. Now, I did an install of Leopard after the Restore (upgrade) and I got the basic apps back. My question now is where my other apps are hiding?? Are they somewhere within the previous system folder from the original Archive and Install?? (I havent been able to check because i'm now at work when the possibility dawned on me)
Does anyone know where these programs would be and how I can restore them?
Also, my prebundled software (Final Cut Express HD) that came pre bundled with My imac G5 originally is asking for a product serial number before it can launch. However, i never had a serial key for it.
Can someone please help and shed some light on this situation.

    Additional Info:
    Imac G5
    1Gb Ram
Original Install was Archive and Install
Did Full Backup With Time Machine
Restore Under Utility in Leopard Boot Disc
    All Apple programs were missing
Did an Upgrade>Install of Leopard after Restore and got back the basic Apps like mail, Garage Band, iTunes etc... However, all iLife was gone as well as Soundtrack and iwork 08...not to mention my Final Cut Express HD now wants a serial # that I do not have because it was pre installed originally with the iMac G5
    Where did these programs go?
How do I get them to restore?
fyi-- My dock where the programs were located (in addition to Applications folder) just had a bunch of ? marks on it where the icons would usually be.
Is it a result of the Archive and Install and the Applications are in the previous system folder?
I cant figure it out because when I search for the programs in FInder all I find is files for the programs and cache files etc... But not the actual Application icon

  • Time machine does not recognise itself after restore

I had to restore my data from time machine by doing a full migration of all data from my back up drive.
Now that I have recovered my existing system (which did involve a full wipe of HD, internet recovery and an update again from ML to mavericks).
My restored system does not recognise the back up drive as a time machine and it would appear I cannot append any future backups to this TM.
I would have to wipe the disk and start again which I did not particularly want to do.
    Any thoughts please ?
    thanks

I restored my safari bookmark playlist from time machine. But it again missing after sometime.Again I restored the same thing happns again.plz help

Triple-click the text on the line below to the clipboard, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
    Quit Safari.
    Select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the Finder menu bar. Paste (command-V) into the text box that opens, then press return.
A folder window should open with a file named "Bookmarks.plist" selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the folder open.
Relaunch Safari. It will open with the default set of bookmarks. Delete them all. Select
    File ▹ Import Bookmarks
from the Safari menu bar. Import from the bookmarks file you moved to the Desktop. Arrange the bookmark folders as you wish.
If Safari now performs normally, you can delete the old bookmarks file. Otherwise, quit Safari again and put back the file you moved, replacing the newer one with the same name. Close the Finder window and post again.

  • HT201250 I use time machine and I can't get a certain backup to allow restore

My MBPro stopped booting up. I got it up and running again after reinstalling everything(OSX and all). I am now running Mountain Lion, could this be causing problems seeing all the non Mountain Lion era backups. I can only restore those dates now, no older than upgrade date ones.
I hooked up my time machine drive and now I can't get a certain date to make itself available for "Restore" the latest date that lights up that button in Time Machine is the date I did the reinstall. How do I get my excel files I made back onto my computer.
Other issue is where are Excel files kept in the MAC's file structure. I know the were backed up, but I can't see them when I am using Finder to look within each subfolder in Time Machine.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. • Time Machine size discrepancy / backup fail

Hi! For a few weeks now my Time Machine backups have ceased to work, with an error that they are too big for the drive. While I only have a 500GB drive, my total size of the backup has always been well within that (thanks to the exclusions I have set up, mostly for my video projects).
I've finally had a chance to look through my files and determine that the only truly gargantuan folder was indeed my Videos folder, but it is excluded.
Here's the nub of my problem / question:
My Time Machine panel under Options says the estimated size of the full backup is 274 GB. But backups fail with a message that the backup requires 849GB! That's way more than the 20% overhead I know TM requires in addition to the backup size.
This seems to be the key to why my backups are failing.
Can anyone suggest a course of action?
    Thanks!
    Adam

ARGH! Would you believe that - only days after I fixed it with the combo update - it happened again?
Well, it did. "The backup requires 847.90 GB but only 93.79 GB are available."
847 GB? The "Estimated size of full backup" in the exceptions window is 276.88 GB.
    Just like before.
I did run a Repair Permissions after the combo update as suggested... just to rule that out...
Just in case it's at all helpful, I'm including the info from the Dashboard widget that reveals Time Machine log info - first for the last successful backup, then for the first one to fail.

It must have found the old backup corrupt.. so you will more than likely have little choice. You can archive off the old backup if it is still useful.
You can also verify it. See A5 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
He also has some info on this problem. eg C13.

Please can any help? I can find the mail folder in my libraries, but the Restore Button is grayed out

OSX treats the reformatted drive as a different one; it's the same as replacing it, and the old one is no longer connected.
See #E3 in  Time Machine - Troubleshooting to see and restore from the "old" drive.
And, you may not want to restore via the Finder; see the blue box in #15 of  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • HT3275 Time Machine Breaks in Mountain Lion after 1st backup

I have been having great problem within both Lion and Mountian Lion and Time Machine. After only a single backup the next backup will ALWAYS FAIL!. When I run Disk Tools to repair the disk for it, I am also always have to do a force eject to remove it from the desk top in order to repair it. It alway finds some errors. I had thought that perhaps the disk may have bad sector but checked this with Drive Genious 3 and fouund this was not the case. I even used a brand new drive and this problem sitll occurs.
This same problem is present on both my Mac Pro and a mac mini that are runnning 10.8.2. I am so frustrated at this point I have been investigatin commercial back up products. I wish and hope that Restropect is still around. It is a day I thought that would never happen to see Apple go down hill so far with the qality of thier software.
I have tried all trouble shooting steps provided by apple at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3275?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US and none of this will fix this problem. If anything is accomplished, the next back up will work only once and then fail on next back up.

I would like to perform a clean install of Mountain Lion
Why?  That rarely accomplishes anything good.
I do not wish to use setup or migration assistant.
    Why not?
If you want to leave apps behind, do the clean install, then use Setup Assistant to transfer your home folders, but omit Applications.  You can also omit some broad categories of things in your home folders if you want.  See Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion.
    1. After the clean install, will I be able to browse AND copy filed from the old backups manually?
If you mean via the TM browser (the "Star Wars" display), perhaps.  If the user account(s) you set up have the corresponding UIDs as on the backups, yes.  (See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.)
    2. If I do copy the files, will I have permission errors?
If you copy them via the Finder, possibly.  Especially if the UIDs don't correspond, the new user account may not have permission to change or delete things.  You may be able to put default permissions on them via
    Resetting Password and/or User Permissions.
Basically, I wish to copy only select files from the Home Folder and re-install everything else anew.
If you skip Applications, and reinstall them, your best bet is to use Setup Assistant, omitting any broad categories you can.  Otherwise, let it all transfer, then delete what you don't need.
After that, I want to restart Time Machine in Mountain Lion and start a new backup.
If you don't use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant, the next backup will be a full one.  Plus, the previous backups will be treated as if they were made from a different disk.  You can still see them, but via the procedure in #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
You may be able to avoid that by manually telling Time Machine to "associate" the erased drive with the old backups, per #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • How is it possible that in preference the lock by Time Machine is unlocked the day after i locked it

How is it possible that in preference the lock by Time Machine is unlocked the day after i locked it

The crossdomain security policy stuff is annoying, but it's there to prevent this sort of scenario:
Joe Blackhat writes a flash game about Bob the Goldfish. Joe Blackhat decides that a fun thing to do might be to write an SMTP client in ActionScript so that fans of Bob the Goldfish could unknowingly send spam while they play. Bob the Goldfish game goes viral. Everyone is playing it and spam volume bajillion-duples. Spam kills the internet. The End.
This is facetious and contrived, but without crossdomain security policies, the internet would be a much more dangerous place. JavaScript has even more restrictive crossdomain policies. I don't think this is going away.

  • Time Machine size configuration

How do I manage my time machine backup sizes?
I need to be able to limit/quota the time machine size.   I can quota per user per system, but that would impact their home directories.   I've tried to modify the sparsebundle size, but that just horks up TIme Machine.

Shame nobody cared to describe this working solution... I am running Mavericks and struggling to find this setup/config

  • Restricting Time Machine size with LaCie NAS Share

I have a question regarding quotas for my LaCie 2big NAS. I am using Time Machine on my MAC OSX. I had no issues in the Time Machine setup and initial backup so far. I wanted to limit the amount of disk used by Time Machine. I created a separate Share for Backup on the NAS. However, I am not able to set a quota based on the Share. I can only set the quota based on the user. I tried to create a user named "backup" which had a quota but the Time Machine sparse bundle has my own username (i.e., "my_username") as the file owner (it seemed like I needed to have the backup and my_username for the NAS with permissions on the Backup share). Time Machine identifies the disk as "Backup - My_NAS_Name" with the 500 GB limit which I established. This seems like it is working but I am not sure about the best approach.
Why doesn't the 2big NAS support Share quotas? It seems to be supported on other LaCie products. Is this the best way to configure or use the NAS to restrict the TIme Machine available size?

To protect yourself against fire, flood, theft, and direct lightning strike on your power lines, you need secondary, off-site backups. Get a portable external drive (or a pair, to alternate). Periodically do separate backups to it, and take it to your safe deposit box, workplace, relative's house, etc. CarbonCopyCloner (which I use in addition to TM), SuperDuper!, or the like would be fine for this, although you could use TM by just doing a +Change Disk+ each time.
Frankly, looking back 20 pages through this thread, I am astonished by the number of problems that people seem to be having with Time Machine. It rather looks like a flakey piece of software that's best avoided.
Don't be misled by what you see here. TM works just fine for most people. They only post here when there's a question or problem. Many of the questions wouldn't be necessary if Apple's documentation was better, and most of the problems are either things people did without knowing they shouldn't, or hardware problems. You'll find similar threads on the CCC and SD forums, too.
