Time Machine "Skipping"

I have an odd little issue that I hope someone can help with.
I have a 2.8 GHz MacBook Pro 15" running 10.6.4, with two external 1TB LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Drives (one is a weekly Carbon Copy Cloner backup, and the other is my Time Machine).
Approximately 2 weeks ago, I noticed that my Time Machine backup wasn't keeping up, but the menu bar icon still occasionally cycles indicating the routine backup procedure.
After more investigation, I found that if you tell TM to backup now, it will calculate changes, start prepping files (it'll get up to somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000), and then for no reason, simply stop, and show that the next scheduled backup is another hour or so away. Again, no reason, and nothing backed up.
_I have tried the following things:_
-Restarting
-Ejecting/Power Cycling/Re-connection of the external drives
-Verifying/repairing the disk (it showed as OK)
-Testing backups with JUST the Time Machine drive connected
-Deleting the preferences file in the root Library folder (the plist file)
-Re-selecting the TM external drive
I'm at a loss, and would like to know if any of the Time Machine experts out there have an idea of what might be going on...
Thank you,
DAVE

No luck with the plist file. Here's the contents of the crash report:

And why not? Apple is selling these things like BigMacs. They can't make enough of them. You've been suffering since May because you refuse to get a decent router.
Can you imagine if a company that makes a refrigerator told me that I needed to upgrade my electrical system to rectify a problem with their device? What kind of response IS that?!?!
What if the problem with their device is that it requires a new-fangled "grounded" outlet and your circa 1890 house doesn't have grounded outlets. Would you refuse to purchase a $ 25 adapter on principle?

  • Time Machine skips every backup

My problem is similar to the one described in this thread - TM sometimes skips backup. The difference is that my Time Machines is skipping every backup.
The Preferences panel will show that a backup is scheduled for 7:12 PM. I watch for backup activity in the panel but the only thing that happens is that at 7:13 the next backup is set for 8:12 PM. This happens every hour.
Using the Console utility, I find no errors logged. If I select "Back Up Now" from the Time Capsule menu bar icon I get a perfectly good backup.
Time Machine is backing up to Apple's Time Capsule. I started using the Time Capsule 8 months ago and, until 10 days ago, everything worked fine. I have two computers backing up to the same Time Capsule. Both of them stopped backing up automatically on the same date. The Time Capsule has a 2 TB capacity and 1.84 TB is available.
I tried removing the Time Machine plist from the Preferences folder. I reselected the Time Capsule and initiating a backup but automatic backups have not resumed.
Any suggestions for a solution will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your suggestions. Here are my results.

  • Time Machine skipping files and folders

Running OS X 10.10.2 on a Early 2009 Mac Pro. System installed on a 256 GB solid state drive. 10 GB of memory.
I'm having a problem with Time Machine where it's not backing up some of my files and folders. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to it, but it includes very, very important things like the parent directory for projects I'm working on, arbitrary hash directories in some git repositories, an assortment of emails, Messages attachments, random preferences files, and somehow the entire contents of my Pictures folder. And probably more -- I haven't checked everything.
I've recently forced Time Machine to do a full traversal when it made a recent backup (and confirmed that it was a full traversal by looking at backupd's output in Console.app), but these files are still missing.
Does anyone have any suggestions for what I can do to fix Time Machine? I just want it to do a full backup, not skipping anything.
As a last ditch effort I could blow away my Time Machine drive and start from scratch, but I really, *really* don't want to do that because it contains several months worth of backups, and I occasionally do need to go back and get older versions of files.

It is a nasty bug of OSX 10.9 and 10.10 . Some workaround is described here: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/170219/time-machine-is-skipping-files-a nd-folders-how-to-fix/170336#170336 by Pete.

  • Time machine skips files

I had serious problems with a (non-Apple) program update, and since then Time Machine has only been willing to back up part of the disk, not all of it.
Is there a way to reset Time Machine so it will know it should back up the entire drive?

Check the Time Machine exclusion list in the Time Machine system preferences and remove all items from here. In addition you might check the following article to see about hidden settings that might be preventing Time Machine from making full system backups: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57556922-263/ensure-that-time-machine-is-ma king-restorable-backups-in-os-x/
Do keep in mind that Time Machine will not back up certain files like those in the Trash, or temporary files like caches, so upon restoring some programs might need to re-cache data, but they should still work.

  • Time Machine skip certain files

For some reason Time Machine doesn't want to backup every day a Microsoft Access file.
For some obscure reasons, sometimes it save it. I haven't been able to determine why.
These informations can be helpfull to give me assistance:
the file is stored in a volume which seems to be backup correctly
the file in not in the exclusion list and has never been in
the file modification date is changing as user modify it
I have tried to apply the 'touch' command to the file and start manually TM right after. But the file has not still being backup.
if I make a copy of the file at the same level of the file system, TM save it.
if I restore the latest version of the file from TM. Some data are missing in the file. That proove that the version is older.
    Anyone can help?

  • Time machine skipping scheduled backup

just noticed i had not had a backup since the 23rd. checked and one was scheduled for 4:01. 4:01 came and passed. no backup. checked and one was scheduled for 5:01. hit "back up now" to get myself covered, but why would it skip past the appointed time.
some time back, i had used timemachineeditor to change from 1 to 4 hour intervals. that doesn't seem to be active either (since it went from 4:01 to :01).
    clues?

Interesting conversation. I have timemachine editor also and back ups have been at random since I got it. I set it for 24 hrs. It has not gone days but will go from 3-10 times a day. It has a propensity to start back up as soon as I start working. I am continually hitting the stop back up command because everything is slow and choppy when the back up starts.

When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

  • When is Apple going to fix the problem with slow Time Machine backups with Mavericks?

I have been with Apple tech support and they got my Time Machine working by doing a spotlight re-indexing and a safe boot.  This worked for about three days and I am back to very slow backups.  It is impossible for Time Machine to back up every hour when it takes six hours to do the back up.  I don't want to take hours to re-index with spotlight all the time.  I think taking six hours to do an incremental backup is a bit much.  I see that there are many people that have this trouble and it all started with an upgrade to Mavericks.  The question is when is Apple going to fix this problem of slow backups with Time Machine for Mavericks.  I have wasted more time than I care to.  I am think of going back to Windows.  I need good solid backups of my machine and Apple has taken it away with the new Mavericks. Oh, I am using the UBS 3.0 connection so the drive should not be the problem.  Also this has occurred in about the last five months, so I am not sure this problem was in the original Marvericks.

Allen Thanks for your reply.  All I can say is several months ago Time Machine quit working in a reasonable manner.  Right now I have a Time Machine backup that has been running all night and still has three hours to go to backup 6 GB of data.  I am using a OWC 1.5 TB drive connected directly to my MacBook with a USB 3.0 connection.  In the resent past I have added Dropbox, GoogleDrive and a MAMP server on which I am using a program called Learning With Text from Sourceforge.  There have been a lot of questions on the forum about people having very slow Time Machine back ups, so it appears to be a general problem.  I should also state I am getting this very slow backup after doing the Spotlight re-indexing and the Safe Restart procedure that was told to me by apple support.  I have a 750 GB drive in my MacBook Pro which I am constantly trying to keep at a 5% level of free space.  This might be a problem also.  However, I am working on a lot of things and like to have a lot of things on my drive.  Also the heavily loaded drive has not be a problem in the past.  This slow backup business started about three months ago, so something has happen in a very short time period.  Now it seems even the procedure that Apple support gave me is not working.  Currently I am in China and it is difficult to interact with Apple support to solve this problem, but because I am in China having my computer backed up is critical. I have run the EtreCheck and am attaching the results below. I would appreciate any suggestions.  If necessary I will clear out more of my hard drive if that appears to be a solution.  The Time Machine drive was recently reformed so I only have a few backups on it.  I also don't run the Time Machine all the time as I don't want multi-hour backups running all the time.  I run it every few days.

  • Time Machine backup slow in copying phase

I've had a gander through Pondini's (excellent!) site and other locations, but still can't seem to get TM to backup at a regular pace.
I've got it connected via ethernet, but with about 500GB to backup and a copying speed that managed to do only 40GB in 14 hours, it's waaaaaay too slow.  Current message says "Backing up: 44.01 GB of 499.82 GB"
I've done various things like removing Sophos for Mac, relaunching Finder, checking the Activity Monitor to see if there's anything hogging CPU, re-booted my My Book Live NAS and a few other things besides.  Nothing's helped.  Below is a copy/paste of details from EtreCheck.  Can anyone help?

In case it's useful to someone who stumbles on this some time in future, I had another look at Pondini's site and found mention of TechTool Pro causing issues, of which  I'm running v7.
I went into System Settings/TechToolProtection and Disabled protection features.  After a minute or so, I got a bump in speed, with TM now copying a GB every 4 - 5 minutes.  Still very slow, but something of an improvement.

  • Specific Files Deleted from All Time Machine Backups

    Greetings all!
I hope you may be able to solve my problem here. Today I purchased a new late-2013 iMac 3.2 GHz i5, running OSX 10.9.3. I've had several computers this year and chose not to restore from my many backups, but rather transferred all documents, data, settings, etc. from my latest backup (completed today, which I know had all the original files) via Migration Assistant. Upon completion, I noticed that many of my folders and files were missing! My first response was to simply check my month-long list of backups for those specific folders and they were all missing as well. This came as quite a scare, as I run a design business and this is my main backup. Note: these are not files that would be on the list that Time Machine skips over; they're just my regular files (docs, pics, pdfs, etc.).
Now, in a few of the backups, in my User folder, there are more folders than others, along with a few seemingly random files (i.e. company A -> contracts -> onlyme.pdf), but the rest of the files are missing! Some backups include the main Music, Pictures, Documents, etc. and some only include a few. I've verified and repaired the disk, but this only made more files vanish from the backups! I have hidden files visible, which also has not helped. Is there something I'm missing? Disk permissions on Disk Utility are greyed out and I don't know of any other options. Can anyone advise? Are these files simply lost forever?
    Thanks in advance!
    Tim

If repairing the volume caused more files to disappear, then the drive is malfunctioning and must be replaced. That's why one backup is not enough to be safe. You need at least two independent backups on different storage devices.

  • Time Machine does manual backups but not automatic.

Time Machine skips automatic hourly backups but will do a backup if I click "Backup Now".  Any idea why automatic backups are not working and how to enable them?  Thanks.

  • Time Machine - which old backups are deleted?

    Hi,
Apologies if the answer is obvious - just wanted a second opinion.
I'm backing up a 500GB MBP and a 2TB external to a 4TB Time Machine. If I complete a backup right now, can I be sure that everything on both drives is contained on the Time Machine drive?
If both my MBP and 2TB drives exploded in the next few minutes, will I be able to get back all those files from my Time Machine?
I ask because TM deletes old files during the backup process but we're never told which ones. If I've created and then backed up files in March (and not deleted them from the original drives) can I be sure that they're still available to restore from in July?
         Thanks,
    A

Everything you need, yes (Time Machine skips some things that aren't needed, such as system work files, most caches & logs, trash, etc.).
I ask because TM deletes old files during the backup process but we're never told which ones.
It "thins" backups, per the schedule on the prefrences window:
If I've created and then backed up files in March (and not deleted them from the original drives) can I be sure that they're still available to restore from in July?
Yes.  Time Machine will never delete the backup copy of anything that's still on your system.
The mistake some folks make is, they start deleting originals to save space not realizing that Time Machine will, eventually, delete the backups of those files.
See #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details.

  • Time Machine and Aperture 2.0

I just went to restore a backup up my Aperture 2.0 library that I backed up last night, but in time machine it says my Aperture library from last night was 182 MB. In reality, it was over 30 GB! So why is time machine telling me it's so small, and if I revert to that backup, is it going to really restore my library from last night or only 182 MB of it?

Apparently the corruption issue has been fixed, but there are still some bugs with backups while Aperture is open (which Apple has not acknowledged).
I just discovered that by turning off automatic backups and only backing up with Time Machine after quitting Aperture, you can make Aperture and Time Machine work well together. This is still a bug though that needs to be addressed by Apple! If you ever accidentally backup while Aperture is open, Time Machine skips Aperture on that backup, and re-copies the entire library (not just the changes) on the 2nd backup.
I guess this fixes the corruption issue (since Time Machine ignores Aperture when Aperture is open), but it's not good enough to fix the bug by basically disabling Aperture backups while Aperture is running, and not documenting that. Apple made it out like Aperture and Time Machine were supposed to work together under all circumstances (like iPhoto and Time Machine).

  • Time Machine interface frozen. Must exit using command, option, escape.

When I enter Time Machine (from Finder, email etc) I am presented with the usual interface, but apart from the starfield animation, it is frozen.
The cursor can still be moved and background apps continue to run ok, but nothing happens when I click anything and there are no animations when I scroll over the timescale on the RHS of the screen.
The only way out is to use Cmd, Opt, Esc
Looking at my backup USB drive using Finder I can see that backups are working OK.
    No antivirus software in use
Diagnostic on external backup drive (using the Mac Disk Repair utility) indicates all OK
Can anyone advise steps to troubleshoot and to resolve?
    Thanks
      Dave
