Time machine, SL and external HD = FRUSTRATION!!!
I guess this is my fault because I had a perfectly stable system using Leopard but upgraded anyway.
Ever since installing SL my MBP has slowly degraded. It started with not seeing my iPone 3G and now whenever time machine runs Finder crashes with a a 10810 error.
I have rebuilt directory services, cleaned every cache, run system update and nothing changes. Time machine starts, scans and then dies when the actual transfers start. And this started right after Time Machine automatically deleted older backups so it wants to do a HUGE 67GB backup (of a 100GB startup disk).
HELP!!!!!!
Use Disk Utility to repair permissions.
Boot using your install DVD and repair your disk.
Then re-apply the combo updater.

If you are using "Restore from Time Machine Backup" option from OS X Recovery, you can only choose from the broad categories presented.

To be clear, if you are asking if you can use the volume containing your Time Machine backup to store additional, non-Time Machine files, the short answer is yes.
It's not a good idea though, since the Time Machine backup will eventually fill all available space, after which it begins to remove old, "expired" backups to make room for newer ones. The presence of additional files doesn't change that fact, and Time Machine will not erase them, but you will encounter a dilemma should you want to store additional files on that volume when there is no remaining space. You will have to make room for them on your own, by deleting existing files. Furthermore, since Time Machine cannot back up its own volume, those additional files will not be backed up by Time Machine.
The easy solution for what you describe is to purchase additional external storage. External USB hard disk drives have become very inexpensive; about $55 will buy a perfectly suitable 1 TB drive.
You can also choose to replace your MacBook Air's internal storage with a larger capacity one. Look for a suitable replacement from OWC / MacSales:

Time Machine, Mozy and external drives? Somehow I lost 300GB of data! :(

I have 2 external 500 GB hard drives. One a USB drive used for Time Machine, the other a firewire 800 drive I use for HD video/iMovie files and editing. I also have Mozy (online backup service) installed and running in the background. Not sure what updates I have been running, but about 2 weeks ago I would start getting the spinning color wheel or "spinning beach ball of death" where the mouse pointer/curser would not return. All I could do to recover was hold the iMac power button dow to issue a hard reset. After several occurrences of this event I started yanking my peripheral devices and it seemed to be caused by one if not both external hard drives. 'Cause when I unhooked them, the busy curser went away. Anyway, after this happened for a few days then my external hard drives started randomly un-mounting. Eventually the firewire drive would never remount. WelI, I yank the drive out of the case it was in and put it in another case thinking maybe the external case has gone bad... the strange thing, I could still see the drive in "System Profiler" but it would never mount, even did a PRAM reset. Anyway, I got it in another case, USB only, and it showed up in "Disk Utility" but when I checked it, is said the file structure was bad and couldn't be repaired. So I had to reformat it. Now I'm trying to download 300GB from Mozy because the DVD option from them (Mozy) will cost over $200 (this is what they are charging for the DVD retrieval option)... BTW, the free download retrieval option keeps bombing out on me too, so now I'm not sure I will ever get my files back. Oh well... does anyone have a clue what may have happened here so I don't get in this predicament again... we can start with me not screwing things up but beyond that? Oh, I did hot plug the USB and firewire drives and got warnings about un-mounting first, but with a spinning color wheel I could not do anything like that. Sorry this is partially a vent post. This makes me disappointed in Apple and/or Mozy. This was my first Apple computer purchase and had hoped for something more robust. I can get this same treatment with a PC... at least with a PC I am a little better prepare, I expect this to happen. Anyway I'm done, for now.

I'm sorry to hear about all your troubles!
In the future, if you have an issue that occurs twice or more in a short period of time, you need to start looking at what's going wrong so you can keep things safe.
With regard to those external drives:
You may want to invest in the application Disk Warrior; it can repair many errors that Disk Utility isn't able to touch.
Odds are what happened is you thoroughly corrupted the directories on the drives by yanking the USB cords instead of ejecting them properly. If the directory is corrupted, it's no easy task to get the data saved!
A few questions about the drives:
1) What are the brand names?
2) Have you used these drives with other machines in the past?
3) Do the drives have their own power supplies?
4) Were they connected directly to the iMac?
Some questions about your computer:
1) Have any other peripherals caused you troubles?
2) How large of a hard drive does the computer have & how much space is free?
3) How old is the iMac?
4) Do you have the original install discs?
Lots of questions, but the answers should be helpful.

Ok...the scenario, let's say...
I backed up in Jan '14 on Time Machine on a G/Drive 1GB. (got it.)
In Feb '14, I ran out of space on my Mac, so I deleted photos to make room and did another backup, photos and everything. (got it.)
In Mar '14, I backed up again.
Question 1.
In the Mar '14, back up, it only backed up the photos from my iPhoto library that were current, it did not back up the deleted photos.
So how do I see a complete photo library? The deleted photos and everything on my G/Drive? This scenario was fictitious, however I'm in a situation where I've been deleting photos in iPhoto and backing up to make space since Dec 2012. I don't know how retrieve a true library that has everything! (The photos that I have deleted, btw, have not been duplicates.)
Oh, the reason, why I want a complete photo library is because I want to externally print a album of our 3 yr old son. But when I go to the back ups, I can't tell which files have still have the photos that I deleted. So, how can I piece together all of the photo libraries for 1 comprehensive library without showing duplicates?

Leopard, time machine, routers and external HD's...

i recently aquired the macbook pro 17" - my first mac. it is cable attached to my current OLD nonwireless linksys router and can share/read/write to my other 3 pc's...
i've got two new 500 gb external harddrives and have only formated one so far (i use it alternately on the PC and the laptop)... i formated the external drive in windows as FAT 32 so both XP and OS X could read and write to it... there is the size limitation issue and perhaps others i'm not yet aware of... rather poor coding of the apple OS X which creates little ds.store files et. al. all over the drive, seen only by the windows os. i had to purchase and install a third party program to eliminate all the apple 'litter' files.
anyway.
i'm relucant to format the newest drive until i understand what apple hardware and OS leopard (which i'll probably upgrade too when it becomes available) are capable of handling... so far i'm not too impressed.
i'd like to aquire a gigabite wireless router with a usb2 connection for HD's, printers etc. unforunately the apple airport extreme seems to be fraught with problems and no gigabite thruput for the cable connected pc's...
i'm stumped... i can't easily find a suitable router -
possible one of these -
D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit Router
or...Linksys WRT350N.
i'd like to share the HD's via the routers usb2 connectionality and not have to worry about file compatibility sharing/read/write problems(just data files on these drives)
the more i read these forums and others the more confused i become. it seems my only two choices are poor ones. either i format in apple HFS+ (which i understand puts the apple/system on the drive like microsoft used too when formated with/s) and makes it BLIND to microsoft...or format as FAT 32 which has it's own limitations...
is there a thread or faq which clearly explains this networking/hardware configurating method in laymans terms?

First, let's clear up any confusion about file systems...
An HFS+ volume in no way "contains" any OS X components, unless OS X is explicitly installed on it. When any volume is accessed by the Finder, however, those ".DS_Store" files will be left behind (regardless of the file system in question). These are intended to be hidden files(!), and they are important for certain Finder functions having to do with the way Finder windows are displayed. They are not absolutely necessary, though, and there are several ways to do away with them entirely. At least one method does not require third-party software.
It is better, in my opinion, to allow them to be hidden as intended. In Windows, uncheck the option to show hidden/system files, and they will disappear. The disk space required by these files is negligible, and they provide a great benefit. This is not "poor coding," but rather one of the things that makes OS X's Finder work as well as it does.
Also, Windows need not be "blind" to HFS+. MacDrive allows Windows to see, access, and format Mac volumes. In many cases, the ability to use HFS+ in a mixed-platform environment might be the ideal solution; certainly better than using FAT-32.
Airport Extreme is not "fraught with problems." While it is true that AE doesn't support gigabit ethernet, it is my experience that Airport and Airport Extreme are usually more flexibly configurable, with more features, than any other wireless devices I have seen. Obviously, the focus is on wireless connectivity. If you need gigabit speeds, a proper wired ethernet router might be a better choice. In this regard, any standard gigabit router should do; ethernet is ethernet.
You do want to avoid using any network "add-ons" that require Windows-only clients to work properly. As long as you choose hardware-based solutions that use standard networking and communication protocols, you should have no problems.
As far as Leopard is concerned, there is nothing that anyone here can say. We do not know what changes to file systems will occur with Leopard, and we cannot speculate. I can, however, mention that it is widely known that there is an interest in the ZFS file system. How this will affect Leopard, we cannot say or speculate on. Suffice it to say that you should have nothing to worry about.

I just backed up my mac to an external hard drive using Time Machine. What would happen if I turn Time Machine off and then plug the external hard drive back into my computer?
What I am ultimately wanting to do is make more room on my computer by backing up all of my files onto the external hard drive and then deleting them off of my computer. However, neededing to be able to retrieve them from the external hard drive later down the road.
From what I have read and am trying to understand, is that I probably shouldn't have used time machine. I need to use the external hard drive like a basic flash drive where I can put things on and get things off without having it automatically update through time machine everytime I connect it to my computer.

Dont suffer the tragedy other people make, buy another or 2 more HD, theyre cheap as dust.
The number of people who have experienced terror by having a single external HD backup is enormous. One failure that WILL HAPPEN, and kaput,......all gone!

Deleting them off your computer is fine....having only ONE copy is extremely BAD.

Always presume correctly that your data is priceless and takes a very long time to create and often is irreplaceable. Always presume accurately that hard drives are extremely cheap, and you have no excuse not to have multiple redundant copies of your data copied on hard drives and squirreled away several places, lockboxes, safes, fireboxes, offsite and otherwise.
Hard drives aren't prone to failure…hard drives are guaranteed to fail (the very same is true of SSD). Hard drives dont die when aged, hard drives die at any age, and peak in death when young and slowly increase in risk as they age.
Never practice at any time for any reason the false premise and unreal sense of security in thinking your data is safe on any single external hard drive. This is never the case and has proven to be the single most common horrible tragedy of data loss that exists.
Many 100s of millions of hours of lost work and data are lost each year due to this single common false security. This is an unnatural disaster that can avoid by making all data redundant and then redundant again. If you let a $60 additional redundant hard drive and 3 hours of copying stand between you and years of work, then you've made a fundamental mistake countless 1000s of people each year have come to regret. -
Two external drives, one for time machine backups and a second (daisy chained firewire) for itunes media folder . Time machine fails to backup the media file saying could not be completed, with no error specified. Steps taken already include reformating drive with media, dragging older media backup file from time machine disc to media disc, and deleting time machine plist and starting time macine preferences upon startup. Media folder is approx 200 gb, mostly ripped dvd movies.
Any help for this??

How can I restore my data from iCal? I didn't make any backup, but I use time machine with an external HD. I deleted iCal when I deleted my gmail account. I have tried to restore, but I can only restore the iCal software and not the data.

If you forgot your encryption password:
Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

I have just upgraded to Mavericks and have been using Time Machine on an external disk with Snow Leopard. Can I continue to backup with Time Machine on the same external disk or do I need a new disk since the operating system has changed?

I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine. -

Time Machine will backup your Mac, but not the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme.
Time Machine will back up a hard drive only if it is attached directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire. -
I told Time Machine no and now it won't detect my external drive...
Whenever I would plug in my external drive it would pop up with a Time Machine dialog asking if I would like to set it up for backup. I usually hit the ask me later option. Well last time I just hit no. It was starting to annoy me. Well now, when I plug in that drive, it won't detect it or pop up on the desktop. It works on my laptop. How the heck do I get it back?! I have files I really need to transfer!
I would appreciate any info you can give. My i7 is my first Mac in 10 years and I am a bit lost.As far as I know the drive should still appear as an icon on your Desktop even if you turned down Time Machine's request to use it as the TM backup drive. What's on the external drive right now? Is it just stuff that you dragged and dropped onto it for backup? But if you've used it as a Time Machine backup on your laptop then maybe that's part of the reason you're having difficulty getting it to show up.
P.S. If you want TM to ask you again if you want to use this external drive as a TM backup, go to Applications and open Time Machine and then go to Time Machine preferences and make the selection you desire.

I am using an external drive in the exact way that you described. You just keep it plugged in to the computer when you want to access the movies and files. In order to put files on it, just go to finder open up the drive under devices and drag and drop files onto the drive. It is just like using a usb drive with a terabyte of space.

My iphoto library inexplicably disappeared! i am panicked but i do back up by time machine to an external drive and also to JustCloud. I am trying to restore my iphoto library from a back up on feb 28, 2014 and it says it's copying but then gives me a message that it can't do it because i "don't have authorization to access iphoto library"?! what does this mean? i really want to get my library back on my mac. Also if anyone knows why this happened or where my photos might be on my computer, i'd appreciate help with that, too.

I was able to restore my backup from my time machine ext drive to a new 1tb seagate ext drive. so i felt sort of ok. but yesterday that older ext drive i used for time machine wouldn't open! i called applecare and they trouble shooted with me and said it's probably a goner and data is probably corrupted. it's only a few years old and i'm very careful with it. my husband accidentally dropped my new drive last night -- i know, unbelievable, i was SO upset, poor guy -- but I'm so stressed with all of this. i have 10 years of photos and videos. so now i only have the one newer drive with a backup. i have to buy another one today to backup again so i at least have two backups. i tried to delete a ton of files last night to free up the 30 gb of space i need to get my full library back on my mac. i have 90gb free and deleted 7 years worth of photos i had on picasa that were in my "pictures" folder and also a ton or random photos and videos i had in that same pictures folder and thought that would give me the 30 gb but it hardly freed up any space at all! do you know why that is? all of this stuff is really a pain and really stressful. thank god i did have a backup in the first place but now i am panicked the one i have left will somehow crash. especially after my husband dropped the drive lastnight! it didn't fall far and fell onto a wood floor and seems fine, but after my older ext drive crashed yesterday -- and i lost my entire iphoto library a fewweeks ago off my mac -- i feel cursed. any answers you have would be great. thank you.

My MacBook Pro (OS X 10.8.2) has experienced this week troubles when backing up with Time Capsule, and I searched on the community and the web where is a lot of same cases, but I didn't found any solution that fit on my case.
The problem ?
Simply when I start a manual Time Machine backup to the Time Capsule it goes normal for several Gigs and crashes with no error massage and then the OS freezes when trying to stop or force close Time Machine.
Then ?
The only thing to do for resuming the OS is to hard restart the device.
I found some advices on this community and other forums, but no chance. I will list some:
Open Disk Utility, and select the device's hard drive then choose "Repair disk permissions". You may try this on the backup disk if you are using an external drive for Time Machine.
If you are on an incremential backup, try to delete the old backup file (if you use a Time Capsule) or format (erase) the external drive using Disk Utility. So you start the backup over, even if that should take a long time to finish it may solve problem.
I have tried those steps, and I used both Time Capsule and an external drive for my tests, but I came with no results other than hard resetting my mac every time after a couple Gigs of backup and starts over.
Solution?
The solution that fixed this error, is to open Option window on the Time Machine Preferences and to Add ( + button) your personal folders one at a time to the excluded items list, and try to backup, if it freezes try to Add another one and try over, until the backup succeeds, the last added folder should the one that causes the crash. you can remove the first added folder but keep the last one, and execute the backup again. For me, after adding System files and Applications folder, Music, Downloads, Pictures the last folder I added before the backup runs normal was the Movies folder. and then I removed all my folders keeping the Movies folder excluded I managed to backup my Mac to both external drive and Time Capsule smoothly again.

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. Turn Time Machine OFF in its preference pane while copying the volume.
