Time Machine, something is wrong...

... very wrong. For quite sometime now, I've had no issues w/ Time Machine, ever. Not now.
I got a warning that time machine could not backup, seemingly out of the blue, that was too large etc. (sorry don't recall exactly). I deselected soem large items not for backup, but the warnings of failed backup kept coming.
After reading at http://pondini.org I finally just erased my TM external drive and started all over. It backed up, but then the next back up TM started wigging out again... so I then followed the trashing of the temp backup item. Took forever to empty teh trash but it didn't. Rebacked up again w/ TIme machine...
... it is now going on 4 hours of saying "5 seconds left" in the backup as the original said backing up like 998 GB(after trashing the temp backup), now it says  "backing up: 1.83 TB of 2.01 TB
Both numbers keep growing. I read somehwere someone fingering that it was icloud (not a fan) doing weird things to volume size and TM losing its mind. I have no idea... all I know is clearly something is wrong. Help! Thanks.
OS 10.8.2, TM on 2 TB 800 FW external drive

Hope this helps and is not too much;

  • Is Time Machine something that I can back up to in a separate particle of my new MacBook Pro or do I need an external drive to use with it?

.....ie we have Seagate external drives but both have Windows files on them, although plenty of room. Am I able to keep the Windows files on them and back up to them with Time Machine on new MacBook Pro? Don't understand....and not very clear. Thanks
    Belinda

    Belinda,
In order to use Time Machine the external volume must be formatted in Disk Utility as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". You can't use a drive that is formatted to be used for both a Mac and a Windows unit (exFAT, etc.). You should purchase a new external drive to use with Time Machine and never let your work go for over a week with hooking up to the TM drive and allow Time Machine to do it's thing.

  • Time Machine always reporting wrong size after several full resets

    Good afternoon,
I have been using Time Machine on a Macbook Pro 2012 backing up to a QNAP NAS TS-419 P II
After a year of using Time Machine without any issues I've now ran into a situation i do not seem able to resolve.
For several reasons I wanted to do a full Time Machine reset and do a new full back.
For that, after trying various solutions with no succes, I've deleted the sparse bundle, switched off Time Machine support, restarted the NAS, switched on Time Machine  support again. Furthermore i did  full reset on the Macbook following as per http://pondini.org/TM/A4.html
However every time I start a new backup Time Machine seems to limit the sparse bundle to 1.07 TB, while I have not set any file size restrictions. Next to that it's also reporting only 657 GB of the 1.07 TB is actually free. As if the old sparse bundle with the backups were still there.
Anyone who has been facing the same issue?
    Thanks,
    Gijs

Actually, I can shorten this down to just:
Mount TimeMachineBackup disk, it reports ~95GB free.
Repair it, it reports 800+GB free
    Unmount it
Remount it, it again reports ~95GB free.
    Rinse. Repeat.

  • Time machine icon on wrong drive?

One of my machine (a Mac Book pro) is showing the time machine icon for it main disk "Macintosh HD" as well as for the external USB drive that time machine is actually using. This system was an upgrade from 10.4 and the external drive had a bootable system on it (via super duper) from before the upgrade which may have confused things.
How do I get my HD icon back from my main drive?

I also had the time machine icon on the main drive. I went into the information window, and attempted to delete the icon. Nothing happened apparently, and I assumed it failed. I forgot about it, and went about my business. When I rebooted a few days later, the icon had been changed to the normal disk drive icon. It seems to be staying that way now after a few more reboots...

  • Time Machine opens the wrong window

I am trying to find an earlier version of a document that resides in a sub-folder called 'R. School' within my Documents folder. When I enter Time Machine with 'R. Folder'as the foremost (and only) open window it immediately closes and is replaced by my Home folder. I can navigate within Home to get back to the folder 'R. School'but subsequent attempts to have Time Machine go to earlier versions of the latter don't work. Can anyone advise me?
    Thanks -
    FJL

Are you sure the document existed, in that exact same location, with exactly the same name, on earlier backups?
Start with your home folder, then navigate to the date you're looking for, then look inside the Documents folder to see everything that was there when that particular backup was performed.

  • Time Machine view is wrong and very confusing/ annoying

When i open time machine, it goes into the view with all of the stars and such. However, i only can scroll back one day, however on the external harddrive that i back everything up to says that i have all of my files and backups- it just doesnt show in the right way. PLEASE HELP, ITS VERY ANNOYING!!!
    /Users/Jack/Desktop/Picture 1.png

    Go to Utilities>Disk Utility
Click on the long name for the time machine drive and look down at the bottom of the window.
You should have the GUID partition map for your Time Machine setup for this computer.
Then click on the volume which you are using for Time Machine and check that you are using mac os x extended journaled formatting.

  • How to restore an Iphoto library from Time Machine

I backed up last sunday onto time machine -all went well. Due to sillyness lost my Iphoto library from my 13 inch afterwards;I was trying to transfer my data to another mac (my 15 inch that had a new hard drive )using migration assistant . no Iphoto libray in either but I assume it is in Time machine( sudays one)
How easy and how does one restore from Time Machine something like the Iphoto Library ? this is my only record of 3211 photos so dont want to stuff it up ??!!
thanks to anyone ,as my wife will kill me if I get it wrong??!!
    Amr

If you are using iPhoto 7, just launch iPhoto and then enter Time Machine. You can browse back through Time Machine with iPhoto's own interface.
This doesn't work in iPhoto 5. With iPhoto 5, you have to use a Finder window in Time Machine to navigate back to your iPhoto Library folder (in homefolder -> Pictures by default) and restore it.
I'm not sure which way it works in iPhoto 6.

  • Since mavericks safari changes bookmarks- can't restore w/Time Machine

I am BEYOND frustrated. Since I installed Mavericks, Safari has been changing my bookmarks, seemingly on it's own. It's done it three times.
I even worked with support at Apple. When we went back into the Time Machine I was able to restore the bookmarks. But I actually wrote down the time that the bookmarks were correct, restored it, and then did a save on the Time Machine. But today, it happened again, and even the Time Machine has the wrong version- not just on the date it was corrected with Apple Support, but on practically every date that I've checked. (I can't go back so far that I'm going to lose the new saved bookmarks).
Now I don't know if it's my Time Machine that is ALSO screwed up! They're telling me to do a reinstall- but I know how much time and effort that takes- and WHY would that make things better if I'm installing the same backup?
I am so unhappy with Mavericks and all these problems and the time I've wasted. I feel like I'm on a PC!!
Anyone have suggestions- other than taking a BIG drink and leaving my computer for a couple of weeks?

It's fixed! This is what happened. I called Apple Support because it's been a problem with Mavericks. The first Senior Advisor didn't know what she was doing. In fact, she encouraged me to do a reinstall- which I know is something that I won't do unless there is nothing else possible.
The second Senior Advisor, Patrick, knew RIGHT AWAY what the problem was! He said the cloud was resetting the bad bookmarks.   The cloud has to be turned off so it wouldn't reload the wrong bookmarks list.I deleted the wrong list, went into the Time Machine and pulled up the last good backup; restored. Then I went into the cloud and turned it back on. Now it works! Yee Hah!
Bottom line is: all of the senior advisors don't know the right answer- if you feel frustrated, ask for another.

  • Basic time machine question from a new mac owner

Hello. I have an icon on my computer that says time machine and when i select the open time machine preferences, it takes me to my set up for my airport extreme.. is this correct or is time machine something additional that i would purchase to set up?

Thanks for the star and no problem, I would recommend that you get yourself an external drive though for backup. With any computer not having a backup system is gamble and sooner or later you will lose. If you do decide on a TM backup drive it would be wise to get one that has Firewire or Firewire 800 connections (for speed) and it should be about 2x the size of your interal drive if possible. Once you connect one TM will automatically back up your system and continue to back up every hour only backing up changes and addtions. So for example if you keep music and pictures and are continually adding material to your computer those are memories that you don't want lost if your machine has a failure, TM will help prevent that from occuring. It is one of the coolest features of Leopard. Two pieces of good news, TM is simple and external hard drives are fairly inexpensive these days.

  • Deleting files on time machine - why doesn't the storage capacity refresh??

    Quick question,
After I permanently delete a file off time machine (something that has storage mass ~3 G), I am not seeing the storage capacity of the time capsule refresh with a higher number. In other words, before the file was deleted from all backups, the time capsule disk read 399 G available. After I permanently deleted the backups for this 3 G file, the available storage capacity was still 399 G. I checked to make sure the file was deleted from the back-up volumes and it was. Do I have to wait sometime before the time capsule updates the available storage capacity. Just curious.

remote TM backups are stored inside sparse bundles. if you open your TC in finder you'll see it. when you delete something from a sparse bundle it doesn't automatically compact and recover the free space. TM will use it up again in future backups. you can also manually compact the sparse bundle from terminal if you really want to.
    the terminal command is
    sudo hdiutil compact /path/to/sparsebundle
you have to put the correct unix path to the sparse bundle in the command and enter your admin password when prompted for it.

  • HT203177 I have not backed up my computer using Time Machine since before I updated to Mavericks.  It has been "preparing backup" for a half hour at least and shows no indication of how long this may take.  Is something wrong?

I have not backed up my computer using Time Machine since before I updated to Mavericks.  It has been "preparing backup" for a half hour at least and shows no indication of how long this may take.  Is something wrong?

No. TM has to look through your entire drive contents and copy them all. This will take some time.
Once the first backup is made, then subsequent backup will be much quicker, depending on how much data has changed since the last one.

  • Time machine backup file size larger than size of backup hard drive.  Is something wrong?

My 3 TB external hard drive (My Book Studio) is my Time Machine drive.  But Finder says that backup.backupdb is 6.9 TB in size, or over twice the drive's capacity.  Should I assume that the drive is corrupt or failing and that I can't rely on Time Machine now?  Or is Finder measuring something other than the actual size of the file...?

I have this problem as well.  I have two laptops backed up to the same external hard drive, and I would like to move just one of the laptop's backups to a new drive.  The partition for both is 600GB, but the size of one laptop's backup folder is 850GB and for the other it is 3.3TB.
I would like to know the actual size of each laptop's backup folder.  Getting the size of the volume is not useful because I need to know the sizes of the two individual backup folders within it.

    Hi sijam11,
    That appears about right...
It is recommended that the Time Machine Drive be at least Twice the size of the Drive it is Backing Up...

  • All applications were "?" On the dashboard after time machine restore to new hard drive...what went wrong?

    Hi folks
I used the cmd R option on booting the MBP and did a disk scan and it reported errors that could not be fixed/repaired.
So I opted to install a brand new 1Tbyte Seagate hybrid hard drive and restore from my time machine backup.
So I installed the new drive in the MBP...it stated that it needed to restore from the internet and I was treated with a rotating globe for about 10 minutes.
It then gave the normal restore options and I opened to format the new drive as a mac drive etc...
Selected the most recent TM backup from USB drive and pointed it to the new formatted HD in the MBP.
So far so good I thought....it said it was restoring....
waited about 4.5 hours and apparently it completed when I was out so I did not see any messages just a normal looking mavericks desktop BUT with "?" In the dashboard where all the applications icons should be?????
I assume something went wrong somewhere so I reinstalled the old HD and restarted TM and it's not starting to backup all 493Gbyte of disk whichI. Understand is normal after a full restore.
So...what to do now??? I'll wait for the 7 odd hours of TM to complete but how best should I proceed with the new HD etc...should I reinstall and copy mavericks to it from a memory stick and then attempt a new restore from the recent TMS backup? Or will this cause issues....
I also have an Inateck hard drive cloning device (brand new never used) so I had wondered if I should simply install the old drive and new drives into this and start the cloning mechanism? OR will this simply clone the errors that were reported on the old drive when it was in the MBP?
In short I'm not sure what to do for the best now and would welcome helpful suggestions as to how to proceed.
    thanks
    Nick

    <<<<UPDATE>>>>
If at first you don't succeed...
Last night after the new 493 Gbyte time machine completed. I once again installed the new drive and restarted the MBP ...waited 10 min for the internet to download the basic disk utilities...restarted the restore from TM and waited 6 hours...Happy days it worked perfectly and like a rocket...the old disk had a read write speed of approx 50-60 Mb/s the new one (hybrid drive) measures at 100-110 Mb/s...programmes open and close noticeably faster and it's better than when the MBP was new...
Apparently this new hybrid drive "learns" frequently used programmes and caches parts that improves start up time etc as time progresses etc...the MBP now starts from cold boot in less than 1 minute compared to 2 plus before...I know minutes should not really matter but it does improve the user experience. I should add I have 16G of RAM installed which does make a difference with Photoshop and Aperture etc.
Hope this helps others or at least encourages people to try hybrid drives over the much more expensive SSD option.

  • Time Machine restored wrong data

OK - the history here is the previous Macbook was replaced because of system problems, including many files with FUTURE dates (eg. 2037). Apple store agreed after repeated issues, they would replace the machine. We did a final time machine/capsule backup before taking it in.
Got the new Macbook and ran the Migration assistant to restore all data from the time capsule.
The data was not correct, and I suspect it was something to do with the future dates.
I can open the sparse bundle backup file and see the correct backup information, but I have no option when I open Time Machine to pick ANY previous backups.
This all started with Macbook problem, and I'm really thinking they should figure this out - but assuming they wont, I'm looking for suggestions on how to safely get the 'real' information recovered from Time Capsule.
    Thanks
    Dan
    PS - OS X Lion on both systems - Macbook Pro 15" i7, 750GB

Possibly.  Migration Assistant uses the most recent backup, so if the dates were wrong, you may have gotten the wrong data.
You should be able to see the other backups -- but you may need to start from a different user account (Migration Assistant creates a new account, and the transferred account may not have permission to the backups.  See Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
A better option may be to do a full system restore, from a different backup.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14 for detailed instructions.  You'll want to pick a backup from before the dates went wrong.
