Time machine spoils mail

Mail is messed up after time machine recovery.
Neither complete new download of mail nor download via new user account fixes the problem.
Better don't rely on time machine.
Evidently its really dangerous.

It actually seems related to IMAP accounts, like someone wrote in another forum.

Time Machine and Mail problems not fixed in 10.10.1

Time Machine and Mail seem completely broken in Yosemite. If anything it got worse in 10.10.1.
1. If you see inboxes at all they are empty.
2. Even if you don't press any buttons, Time Machine changes your account descriptions, order of accounts and in one case even disabled an account!
So after entering Time Machine from Mail, even you don't do anything, you have redo a bunch of settings afterwards.
Anybody know a solution for this?
I've tried talking to AppleCare about this (for a month now) but they never get back to me.

What do you see when you enter Time Machine from within mail?
Also, do you happen to have an external display? I have one and I think that causes extra issues.
Do you see a stack of past inboxes, and for each inboxes do you actually see emails listed?
How many email accounts do you have? And what type are they - Gmail, etc.?
It may be a corruption issue on my individual installation. Or it may be that we have different numbers and types of accounts. So it would be useful to compare.
I have 4 Gmail accounts, 2 "ordinary cPanel" IMAP accounts and 1 iCloud account. So 7 in all.

Entering Time Machine From Mail Gives Photoshop Error!

Hello everybody,
This is a very strange one: If I enter Time Machine when Mail is in front, and if Photoshop is opened, I always get this error from Photoshop: "Could not complete your request because of a program error."
What happens is this:
• I choose the Enter Time Machine command (Entrer dans Time Machine in French, in fact).
• I hear a beep, but the computer goes right into Time Machine, without a hitch.
• I can do anything I want in TM.
• After that, when I activate Photoshop, I see the Photoshop error dialog. I close this dialog and Photoshop works perfectly well.
This happens whether a file is opened in Photoshop or not. It does not happen when Photoshop is in front, +*it happens only when Mail is in front*+.
I am puzzled...

Thanks for jumping in. Well, this is most surprising. There is no record of any error caused by this, no reference to this one way or the other, no error of any kind... I searched with different keywords, Adobe, Photoshop, Time Machine, TM, Mail, to no avail. Anyway it's easy as I can reproduce this error dialog at will: With Mail in front, I enter TM, hear the beep coming from Photoshop (!!!), get out of TM and there it is in Photoshop.
Then I look into the console. An error reported by this event should be the last one and dated correctly, right? Well, there is nothing new.
What literally baffles me is the fact that this happens only when Mail is the active application when I enter TM. I tried every other combination to no avail.

I must say that it was very thoughtful of you to translate your post in French. I do appreciate the courtesy. And yes, your French is certainly acceptable, taking into account that it is not your mother tongue and that you probably do not use it very often. The reason why I mentioned the command name in French is that I was not sure of the exact name in English as my OS is in French. OK, I speak it with what my Hoosier friends call "an accent". But then I tell them... "Look who's talking!"

Viewing cloned or time machine sent mail

How do I safely look for old sent mail without risking updating a current sent mail folder with the older cloned or time machined sent mailbox. I would want to search in 2 different clones and time machine.

Make sure you have a Sent mailbox visible in Mail, then select it, and enter Time Machine.
With the clones, see if you can mount them in Finder. If so, In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library/Mail/V2 and try looking for your user library in the clone.

Time machine e-mail report

i'm using Leopard and want to know if there is a way to get a time machine backup status report by e-mail
It's important for us to know every day if time machine was able to backup ok or if there are problems.

In your other thread, you mention using the Server product. There may be a way to monitor such things there, but folks here aren't very familiar with it. Check the manual and/or Server forums.
If not, you could write an an Automator or Applescript for the server to check the status on each client. It would have to examine the hidden /Private/var/db/.TimeMachine.Results.plist file.

Time Machine & E-Mail adress corrupted

Context :
I go quite often to Time Machine to have a look at my E-Mail In-box status of some days ago. I do so by entering into Time Machine with E-Mail inbox active.
Problem :
When I am entering into Time Machine while E-Mail Inbox is actively displayed and just scroll through previous dates, have a look at it and exit with no restore, my personal E-Mail adress get corrupted from "[email protected]" to "[email protected]". This is shown when I send an E-Mail just after. I need to go to the account management (preferences) to edit and save the electronic adress back to "[email protected]"
Configuration:
iMac 21,5" late 2012 2, 9Ghz
Mac OS X10.8.2
E-MAil account type : POP
E-MAil adress : [email protected]
Can anyone tell me if this is a bug or a bad usage or missunderstanding from my side?

Using "Enter Time machine" with Mail does not show 'restore' tab

I recently upgraded to 10.5.6 and while in Mail, I used the menu 'enter time machine' and instead of the familiar animation, the preview pane of the mail showed the message "click restore to restore your mailbox 'x'" BUT THERE WAS NO restore tab!
I only had my original desktop background with the Mail preview panel in the center.
I took a screen shot but don't see a way to attach images like on other boards.
In all other applications, 'enter time machine' would switch me to finder and go through that great time machine animation with the 'restore''now' and 'cancel' tabs at the bottom.
Anyone know why this has happened?

Sorry to confuse anyone. What I meant was that with Mail.app in front or focus, if I click on the TM icon in the dock OR if I use the menu bar TM icon and from the pull down if I choose 'enter time machine' Then all that happens is the Mail window shrinks a bit, the dock disappears, in the Mail window, in the preview panel there is a grey message saying 'click restore if you want to recover your inbox' if I highlight another folder or mailbox I created it says 'click to restore that mailbox'
But there is no "RESTORE" to click anywhere. I can see my desktop background and the icons of files on my desktop. It looks as if Mail window shrunk a bit onto my desktop with no dock. Hope that gives you an idea.
With any other application as focus, when I click on TM icon in dock or the drop down menu from menu bar, it switches to finder, then goes through that breathtaking animation of the whole desktop dropping down and the finder window trailing into infinity.

Can Time Machine restore Mail 5.0?

I accidentally removed a mailbox (Mailbox B) which is alias of mailbox A. Then mailbox B has gone, but mailbox A's emails all gone together! It happened in the past in Mail 4.5 then I got into Time Machine and restore the last hour. But this time nothing was restored under Lion and Mail 5.0.
After the restore failure, I went back into the Time Machine. I can still see mailbox B, mailbox A and their email headers and details in every hourly backups. But they are just not restored! Did I miss any steps under Lion?

Yes, what you want to do might be possible, but you will need, as others have said, a Mac OS X 10.5 DVD.
Next you should probably have a second external hard disk (We'll call it HD #2) available and do a full Time Machine backup to it. Then set it aside.
Next, using the Mac OS X DVD, and your original Time Machine backup disk (We'll call it HD #1), do a ”Restore System From Backup...”, choosing the earlier system software version.

Once the restoration is complete, remove HD#1 and attach HD#2. Now use Migration Assistant to migrate the user accounts, apps, and other data from the full TM backup you perform before starting the "Restore System From Backup...”. When it detects that there are already accounts with the same usernames choose to "Replace" the existing ones with the one being migrated over.
You should now have an earlier Mac OS X version, but your most recent user data.

What am I doing wrong in Time Machine and Mail?

I've been trying to switch my Mail from POP to IMAP. I've almost got it finished, but I lost a few messages in my inbox when I deleted them from the server (thought they would stay in Mail, guess I need to get used to IMAP). I went to Time Machine, found the messages from a few hours before, highlighted them, and clicked the Restore button. Time Machine scrolls back to the latest window, then Time Machine closes and I'm returned to Mail, no mailbox selected. When I check the Inbox, the restored messages aren't there. I check the Recovered Messages mailbox in On My Mac, I even check the Deleted Messages box On My Mac. I can't find the restored messages anywhere. I can't seem to figure it out, I must not be thinking clearly, and I need someone's help to point me in the right direction. The messages are safely in Time Machine, and I can't get them to come back.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
          Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
          Envelope Index
          ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

Can I copy messages from my Time Machine ~/Library/Mail/V2 to Macbook?

Hi, I wonder if I can copy my old messeges from time machine to my new mailbox via ~/Library/Mail/V2 . Maybe I am doing something wrong but all the messages i have copied are not showing in the mail.app and I do not know how to index them.

Not likely.. the files from the card are loaded into the computer via iphoto I guess.. they are saved in a different format.. you cannot copy those files back to the camera card. But you should still have a backup of the photos .. in TM which is the backup of the iphoto library.
Almost nobody I have heard from will save the original files in raw format. To do that you would need to open the card via Finder and copy the raw files to a folder on the computer which you then backup by TM?? Is that how you have done it??
Tell us more info but most likely you need help from folk in iphoto section or aperture or whatever software you use.
I can help you to recover stuff on your hard disk to recover.. but not on SD card unless you actually included it in your backup which would be most unusual.

When entering time machine with Mail app, old emails are showing in inbox

Hi All,
Has anyone encountered this issue or has a solution:
When I am in Apple's Mail application, specifically in my inbox and I "Enter time machine", my inbox count goes up by at least 100 extra emails and is showing in all recent backups and even in the "Now" setting. Old emails that I've already read and deleted/dealt with are showing up there and I'm not sure why. When I exit time machine, it goes back to normal and they disappear. I would like to have it accurately reflect what my inbox looks like now and the last few days. Any suggestions are much appreciated!

I've tried what you suggested with all the steps, but additional emails are still showing in inbox in "Star Wars" mode. Also, many of the old emails showing are from over two years ago. Very strange!

Time machine and mail box

My time machine disk is frequently running out of space. My time machine at 250GB was sized for an 5 year old Power PC mac. Now, I have an Intel mac with a 500GB harddrive. Time machine is able to keep only one month of backups, which isunaceptable.
I suspect that a big part of the problem is that I never moves messages from my inbox. So, every time time time machine runs, it has to do a backup of my entire inbox with 18,000 messages.
My system drive is 500GB of which 163GB is used and 337GB is free. (Since there is so much free space, I rarely clean up the system drive.)
Some questiions:
1. What is the file name of the inbox?
2. How can I determine how much of time machine is devoted to inbox backups?
3. How can I determine if there are any other culprits?
4. Any suggestions on time machine size (though I think the 250GB drive will do OK when I do some cleanup and fix the mbox problem)?
5. Any suggestions on time machine vendors?

1. A mailbox maps to a folder. Each message is a file. They are in the user's Library/Mail folder.
2. No. Only messages new since the last backup are copied.
3. It would have no effect on Time Machine.
The Inbox is for incoming mail. I think most people would say that it is a good idea to store messages in some meaningful system of mailboxes. Just as you don't (I presume) store all your files on your Desktop, messages worth keeping should be put somewhere you can find them. But it's up to you. It has nothing to do with Time Machine.
250 GB for 163 GB of data is pretty small for Time Machine. You ought to have a bigger Time Machine disk.

Lost mail rules when upgrading to ML, can't restore from time machine

I've installed mountain lion and restored from time machine and mail rules were not there. There's only news from apple.
I tried to restore the rules myself (MessageRules.plist and MessageRules.plist.backup) but when opening mail rules were not there yet. Nevertheless, i can add rules manually, so if there was a way of looking at the past rules I could just copy them (though it's not the best way).

My rules are still there, so perhaps Apple support speak with resource forked tongue.
Comparing an old (pre ML) rules file from 20th June with the ML one, the differences are:
The file name was: MessageRules.plist, the ML one is SynchedRules.plist. Both are in my V2 folder, but the old Rules have been copied (by Mail, not me) into the new SynchedRules file.
In the old file, for each item (Rule) the first line was Active (Key) String (Type) 1 (Value). In the ML file, this line is no longer there, so the first line is AllCriteriaMustBeSatisfied.
You can see these differnces in the "preview" part of Finder Show Info, if you have the two files to compare.
Thus, just copying and renaming the old Rules file probably won't work, because of this difference. Mail probably just makes a new file because the copied file isn't as expected. It should be possible to edit the old plist file to remove the "Active" line, and rename it to SynchedRules.plist (but see below). The top is slightly different, just below <dict>, as this relates to the Active line. There are a couple of lines at the bottom that aren't in the new file.
The "Active" line that has gone is now in a file called RulesActiveState.plist. This file is just a list of RuleIds from the SynchedRules.plist (like this:

Doing this does sound rather tedious, but might be quicker than manually re-entering blocked email addresses etc. to replicate old rules. As plist files are in xml format, it should be possible to use a text editor to delete the unwanted "Active" line from the message rules list by Find & Replace All (with nothing). All this could then be copied to the "SynchedRules.plist. You would need to copy the RuleIds into the RulesActiveState.plist as well.
Make a copy of the files first just in case...

Time Machine & Mail - mail missing; invalid snapshot

To cut a long story short, I did a clean install of 10.6 and lost approximately 2 months of email messages. Good news -- I have Time Machine backups? Not so fast....
I cannot find .emlx files for those messages in the sparsebundle. (Can't seem to do a full search, but I am checking the usual places.)
If I launch Mail then start Time Machine, the Mail pane w/in Time Machine says "Invalid Snapshot". I assume this is due to the backups of messages from an older version of Mail.
Any ideas of what I can try, short of a full restore (which I think would take a long time and would be unlikely to work if I cannot find the emails in the sparsebundle)? Do I just give up (Apple said the messages are gone, though they cannot figure out why I could see them just prior to upgrade to 10.6, then couldn't see them immediately after upgrade + import)?
Could they be cached anywhere?

you weren't flippant at all. i appreciated your replies.
when i reviewed hidden files, i could see TM logs on the backed up volumes.
to be clear: in mid-august, i got a new time capsule, so it contains ALL backups ever done on that machine. data should not have rolled off.
i suspect the data is gone. i'm really pretty upset by this -- just disappointed. i have a great deal of apple hardware, apple operating systems, and an apple backup solution, so there's no other vendor involved.
i now realize i could have taken one additional step (archive mailbox?) that might have prevented this from happening, but nowhere in the apple support documents did i see that this was necessary (copying home/Library/Mail & prefs was listed as enough), and i didn't think i'd need a 3rd option (in additon to the copy + my TM backups).
ugh.
it's truly puzzling as o where these could have gone. i'm unsure as to whether to trust it in the future.
do you think there is any issue with possibly having restored to a different (physical) drive? i know TM keeps that thumbprint of each drive, and since i restored to a USB boot drive (and restored my data to another RAID set), could that be preventing me from doing a proper restore? i wouldn't think so.
*here's the main issue at the moment:* this is my primary machine, and it's now been down for 4 days. it will be another 3-5 days before i get an answer from engineering (my bet? "we don't know."). i'm hesitant to do any real work on the machine, as that will involve data being overwritten...just in the longshot case that they will have some idea about it. however, it seems really unlikely that any data will be recovered. do i just give up and go on? if i set up the system to use time machine again, i'm worried (as i've seen before) that it will overwrite the prior backups and render them inaccessible. if i use the system without a backup plan, then i'm exposed to more trouble.
the good news? i had sent in full system logs from mid-august (when mail was working) in response to another issue. (engineering's solution: reinstall the OS.) they just had me send in new logs today. i doubt they'll make any difference.

i sincerely thank you with your efforts to help. i'm just frustrated as all of this is from one vendor and when OS's and software is designed to run on only one set of systems, there should be fewer opportunities for error. this is a pretty big deal, IMO.
