Time machine still doesn't work with 10.5.2

After loading 10.5.2 I find that Time Machine still doesn't work with a new Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) and USB drive although I was reassured by my local Apple retail store that the fix was in the update. I should have known better. <Edited by Moderator>

Can you explain what archive and install is please?
I am having the same problem. Automator as soon as it starts crashes.
I have tried reinstalling from the OS disk, repairing permissions and none of them work.
Many Thanks

    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select Change Settings for Keychain "login". In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences ▹ First Aid
If the box marked Keep login keychain unlocked is not checked, check it.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access.

I've done this repeatedly. Flash still doesn't work with Safari. It does work with Firefox and Chrome.
I deleted the Flash plugin from Library>Internet Plugins. That didn't solve the problem either.
What can I try next? Thanks.

  • Canoscan 4400f still doesn't work with mavericks

Followed some earlier threads and downloaded appropriate toolbox and driver, but still doesn't work. I see discussion on the TwainBridge.app but not finding it.

I use a 2007 iMac with 4 GB RAM and Mavericks (10.9). The 4400F support page shows Canoscan Toolbox 5 and a driver for 10.9. Great I thought!!! I downloaded and installed both. Toolbox doesn't even launch. I have to force quit it. The driver installed but I cant add the scanner in System Prefs-Printers & Scanners, does not show up. Vuescan sees it but will not function. No preview, nothing. Image Capture (my fav app for scanning till this) does not see the scanner at all.  I have sent feedback on the OS X page as well. From what I can see, just about all scanning (HP/Epson/Canon) was disabled after a Mavericks update. I am waiting for someone (Apple or Canon) to step up and fix this.

  • Time Machine Just Doesn't Work Anymore

I was a happy Time Machine (with Time Capsule) user for months. But it just doesn't work anymore. It takes longer than an hour to do every hourly backup so it is backing up 24 hours a day. It finds hundreds of thousands of files changed every hour and tries to back them up. Finders says only tens of files have been modified all of today. I have tried rebuilding my spotlight indexes, repairing my Time Capsule with Disk Utility and starting over with a brand new backup. But it just backs up hundreds of thousands of files every hour. So I am turning off Time capsule since it is clearly broken. If anyone has any suggestions at all I would welcome them.

    Marcia,
Consider the following, it might give you some ideas:
Time Machine performs backups at the file level. If a single bit in a large file is changed, the WHOLE file is backed up again. This is a problem for programs that save data to monolithic virtual disk files that are modified frequently. These include Parallels, VMware Fusion, Aperture vaults, or the databases that Entourage and Thunderbird create. These should be excluded from backup using the Time Machine Preference Exclusion list. You will, however, need to backup these files manually to another external disk.
One poster observed regarding Photoshop: “If you find yourself working with large files, you may discover that TM is suddenly backing up your scratch disk's temp files. This is useless, find out how to exclude these (I'm not actually sure here). Alternatively, turn off TM whilst you work in Photoshop.” (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1209412)
If you do a lot of movie editing, unless these files are excluded, expect Time Machine to treat revised versions of a single movie as entirely new files.
If you frequently download software or video files that you only expect to keep for a short time, consider excluding the folder these are stored in from Time Machine backups.
If you have recently created a new disk image or burned a DVD, Time Machine will target these files for backup unless they are deleted or excluded from backup.
Installing new software, upgrading existing software, or updating Mac OS X system software can created major changes in the structure of your directories. Time Machine will backup every file that has changed since the installation.
Files or folders that are simply moved or renamed are counted as NEW files or folders. If you rename any file or folder, Time Machine will back up the ENTIRE file or folder again no matter how big or small it is.
George Schreyer describes this behavior: “If you should want to do some massive rearrangement of your disk, Time Machine will interpret the rearranged files as new files and back them up again in their new locations. Just renaming a folder will cause this to happen. This is OK if you've got lots of room on your backup disk. Eventually, Time Machine will thin those backups and the space consumed will be recovered. However, if you really want recover the space in the backup volume immediately, you can. To do this, bring a Finder window to the front and then click the Time Machine icon on the dock. This will activate the Time Machine user interface. Navigate back in time to where the old stuff exists and select it. Then pull down the "action" menu (the gear thing) and select "delete all backups" and the older stuff vanishes.” (http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html)
    *TechTool Pro Directory Protection*
This disk utility feature creates backup copies of your system directories. Obviously these directories are changing all the time. So, depending on how it is configured, these backup files will be changing as well which is interpreted by Time Machine as new data to backup. Excluding the folder these backups are stored in will eliminate this effect.
    *Backups WAY Too Large*
If an initial full backup or subsequent incremental backup is tens or hundreds of Gigs larger than expected, check to see that all unwanted external hard disks are still excluded from Time Machine backups.
This includes the Time Machine backup drive ITSELF. Normally, Time Machine is set to exclude itself by default. But on rare occasions it can forget. When your backup begins, Time Machine mounts the backup on your desktop. (For Time Capsule users it appears as a white drive icon labeled something like “Backup of (your computer)”.) If, while it is mounted, it does not show up in the Time Machine Prefs “Do not back up” list, then Time Machine will attempt to back ITSELF up. If it is not listed while the drive is mounted, then you need to add it to the list.
*FileVault / Boot Camp / iDisk Syncing*
Note: Leopard has changed the way it deals with FileVault disk images, so it is not necessary to exclude your Home folder if you have FileVault activated. Additionally, Time Machine ignores Boot Camp partitions as the manner in which they are formatted is incompatible. Finally, if you have your iDisk Synced to your desktop, it is not necessary to exclude the disk image file it creates as that has been changed to a sparsebundle as well in Leopard.
Let us know if any of this helps.
    Cheers!

  • Time machine Auto Backup not working with Maverick OS

When I boot up my iMac Desktop my Time Machine desktop icon stays yellow and doesn't auto backup and turn green like before. I have reset the Preferences several times to try and fix the problem but it still has to be manually backed up. Is there a fix available?

I have had success with the following.
I removed the backup drive from the Time Machine system preferences.
    Shutdown
Disconnect the drive from the Mac
    Reboot
Connect the drive to the Mac
An automatic dialogbox came up asking me if the drive I just connected should be used for Time Machine.
I selected Yes (or whatever the affirmative was)
    I let the backup run.
Ever since then I have been whatching the automatic backups work successfully.
YMMV but I wish you the best of luck.

    What have I tried...?
At every stage before trying any workaround I have reformatted the external HD, Yes it's HFS+, Yes it's journalled, Yes, it has the appropriate GUID set.
I've removed the external drive itself from being backed up in the time machine preferences.
I've removed system files and applications from the backup.
I've disabled spotlight from monitoring/searching the external drive.
I've verified, repaired, and repaired permissions on all drives - trust me, exhaustiively - including the main HD by booting from the OSX installation disc.
I've tried different external hard drives....
Can anyone offer any advice, or should I stop wasting my time with time machine and just schedule my own rsync????

    Hi Pondini,
Many thanks for taking the time to reply.  The link you posted is a useful one too - sadly I've tried every step listed there - methodically too.
I've tried (and seen failures with) another Samsung Story 2TB drive, a Toshiba 1TB drive and a Maxtor 500GB drive.  All drives have had no other data on them - with a single HFS+ partition dedicated to Time Machine.
I'll try giving it a go with pointing Time Machine to my QNAP NAS (it claims dedicated support for TM) and let you know how that goes - but I really wanted TM to work with a stand-alone external drive.
My suspicions mirrored your own - and I was inclined to blame the external drive.  So I tried a few things to try to eliminate it as a culprit:
         - this is one of three 2TB Story drives I have, I soak-tested all of these with my own rsync tasks and had no errors.
         - I've tried different cables, (all that worked faithfully with my rsync jobs), and have ensured that the drive is the only USB peripheral connected (directly) to the machine.
         - Configured a daemon to touch a file on the external drive every 5 minutes (I did this when I suspected that the drive may be 'sleeping' - it wasn't and the daemon made no difference - I disabled it after this experiment).
         - ran the drive off a bench PSU for all of these tests.
After all of this I now suspect the TM software/OSX...

  • Restore of time machine backup doesn't work

    Hi all,
im having trouble trying to restore backups made with time machine.
Every time i try to restore a file i there is none available. I do backups about once a week. As soon as i select a file to restore time machine shows no backup available. Only the first backup on the timeline is selectable. What has happened?
On the external harddisk all files are available and i can use the finder to copy the necessary files onto my harddrive. But i doubt thats how it's meant to work.
I'm not sure but i think it all startes with the 10.5.5 update, but i have no definite proof of that.
    HELP PLEASE
    Thank you

    Hi -(,)^(,)-
(hope i spelled that right )
Backups are made from system disk as well as the user data disk. So the process of saving works well!
Your tip gave me a hint. I have two disc. Systemdisk (named MacPro) mounted as / and a user disk,
    (named UserData) mounted as /Users
I can browse all files chonologically using the timeline on Disc MacPro. When i select a folder on UserData the timeline greys out and only the initial backup is visible and selectable. I mounted the second disc as
    /dev/disk1s2 /Users hfs rw,auto 0 2
in /etc/fstab. I'm now positively shure that it all began with 10.5.5 update last week.
Any idea how to solve this problem?
Thanks for your help so far

  • Does Time Machine and Sleep Mode work with your external USB HD???

I have a new iMac 10.7.3 with latest software updates.
Do you have an external USB hardrive that works with Time Machine turned on and Energy Saver set at 10 minutes on the computer???
If so which external USB HD are you using???
So far I have not found one that works correctly. They seem to corrupt the external USB HD requiring a reformat of the drive each time.
I need to buy one that works.
    Tom..........

I am presently using four different brands of external drives with Time Machine on different Macs:
    Seagate
    Iomega
    Western Digital
Maxtor (this is an old Firewire 400 drive)
I never configured any of these drives specially for sleep or spin down. I just formatted them and then used them with Time Machine. The computers are set to sleep after various idle times raging from 10 minutes to 20 minutes. The box for "put hard disks to sleep when possible" is also checked.  Two are laptops and two are iMacs.
I have never had any issues with any of these drives, and they've been used with Time Machine for over two years in some cases. That corruption you mention sounds unusual.
Did you format the drives for use with a Mac before connecting them up for Time Machine? For instance, Mac OS Extended and GUID partition table? Some PC formats won't work, for instance If you select an NTFS or FAT-formatted drive, Time Machine prompts you to reformat the drive. If you have one of these, reformat the drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
I am suspecting you have a drive with one of the PC formats that isn't compatible with Time Machine.

  • Play count still doesn't work with 3.1.3. APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS!

    APPLE! PLEASE FIX THIS PROBLEM!
I am getting tired of having to try an remember what episode of my shows I was on! I'm an avid anime watcher who queues up whole series' on my iPod Touch 3g 32GB and go to watch 12 episodes or so, connect the iPod, disconnect, go back to series, pow! they all report they are unwatched! Btw, I use Manually Manage Music settings, not auto sync.
Same thing with my music. I know I have listened to one song at least 40 times, and still the play count is at 2. Because iTunes remembers to count it but can't remember to count the iPod's count when it counts.
This is probably a REALLY EASY FIX, you guys are just so lazy to not fix this problem and say that Apple products have the best customer support?! If you want to boast that please fix the simple problems! I have a 70 episode series I'm starting soon and I don't want to have to right down where I left off.

  • Downloaded Flash Player several times and still doesn't work

A week or so ago I got a virus on my computer. I used Malware Bytes to remove it, and I also have
AVG. I run both of these daily, along with the updates, so maybe they're affecting my ability to use Flash. Ever since the virus, my computer keeps telling me I don't have Flash and that I need to download it. I've downloaded it many times now, but it still appears that I don't have it. I check in Internet Explorer Tools and Addons, and it doesn't even seem to show up in there. I'm using Windows 7. I even tried un-installing and re-installing. If I use Firefox, Flash works, but I prefer to use IE. Any help?
    Thanks!

Hi, Sorry for the delay. Downloading that zipfile to your Desktop is only needed if you found that the Kill-bit was set. Following is part of the first message at the Kill-bit site that Pat put up.
open the registry editor: Start | Run | type regedit.exe
    navigate to this registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000}
if that key does not exist, then the "kill-bit" for Flash Player is not set
if it contains a DWORD entry with the name Compatibility Flags that has any value other than 0x00000000, then the "kill-bit" for Flash Player may be set
Following these instructions you are only "looking", you're not to do anything or change anything yet. You are just looking to see if that Registry Key is there. Like the Step 3 shows, if that Key is not there, then the Kill-bit is not set and you can just close that and you are done.
Do you think you can do that? All you are really doing by clicking on Start, then Run and entering "regedit.exe" in that space that opens up after you click on Run is regedit.exe (don't enter any quotation marks though) All this does is opens the Registry so you can look for that Key.
If that key is there, then let me know. The problem is that if that Kill-bit is set, then no matter what you do, you can't Install that Shockwave Flash Object, ActiveX Control for Flash Player.
    Hope this helps explain it.

  • Tethering STILL doesn't work with the 5D3

I just upgraded to LR 4.2...
It DOES see the camera, the camera settings and even triggers the camera. However, the image files are nowhere to be found. Sigh.

    Allow me to update...
    It is finicky.
    After 3 separate tests:
The first time, after firing the camera 3 times from both LR and from the Camera and NOT seeing them show up in LR, I went to the folder that I told LR to put the files, it had created a sub folder with the name of the tethering session. That folder was empty. I did a search for the file names of my test shots. No files were found.
I then left the everything on and returned 5 minutes later. The camera had gone to sleep. LR Tethering said "Auto" (I'm in Manual--it should say 1/800, f2.8, etc.). I woke the camera up, LR Tethering still said Auto, saw the camera, but the camera now said "Busy" when pushing the shutter release (this is the same behavior that we saw with the LR4.2RC).
Then in Settings, I changed the location of the file destination (to the desktop where I could get to them more quickly). No change to camera firing. I turned off the camera and turned it back on. LR saw the camera, got the settings correct, but still wouldn't fire the camera from LR.
I then turned off and back on the Tethering in LR.
Suddenly it has all worked and no problems. The fact that it had problems getting going makes me nervous for using it in production. We'll see.

  • Mac: Full screen on dual monitors still doesn't work with Flash 10.2 upgrade

Recently upgraded to Flash 10.2 specifically for the ability to work on a second monitor while watching fullscreen video on the first.  It's still not working at all.  The second I click on anything on the second screen, the video jumps back from full screen.  I checked to make sure that these sites work properly with dual monitors on a Windows machine.  Any tips to get this working?  Without this feature, certain websites are completely useless.
Running: MAC 10,2,152,33 on OSX 10.6.6

Hi, I think you are right about it being in this latest FP update. The "More like This" feature on the right hand side of the threads is not working. I think I have some info on Full Screen, but not the dual monitor issue. I'll check to be sure.
I'll try to find some info on it. There were so many changes that came out with this last update.
Will get back to you when I find the info.

  • IPhone 4...still doesn't work with hearing aids

Well. Among all the great features the iPhone offers, I still see no sign that it will be compatible for people with hearing aids and/or cochlear implants...again.
Seriously, this is the iPhone 4. What gives?
Many phones out there have this compatibility, why does Apple continue to neglect the hard of hearing? Same with iTunes not having movies with captions/subtitles. Sure some do, but hardly any new ones or popular ones.
My god if Apple would fix this I would be TOTALLY buying all their products.
Message was edited by: A Deaf Boy

Apple should have made it compatible, especially with the ASL-friendly spin that's being put on the front facing camera.
Although the phone doesn't have a proper T-coil rating, there are options that will work around the limitation. Some of the newer instruments out there are bluetooth compatible by way of NFMI - http://www.oticonusa.com/Oticon/Professionals/professional_products/dual/streame r.html
Another, more generic, option would accept bluetooth connectivity from the phone and convert it by way of neck loop to something you could use with your T-coil program - http://www.amazon.com/Artone-Bluetooth-Neckloop-Alternative-Headsets/dp/B000TZ1R 08
There are several variations on the same theme offered from the big hearing aid manufacturers. Obviously not an ideal solution, but it's better than nothing.

Thats right. The exe doesn't support 64bit JDK on Windows yet. It works on other platforms but not Windows. The launcher has to be rebuilt with a 64bit compiler. We're hoping to get this done by production.
