Time Machine stopped backup of FileVault account at logout

Suddenly TM stopped backup of my FileVault account. Usually the backup was initiated after logout, but for a couple of weeks nothing like that has happened. It could be a little bit correlated to the time of upgrade to 10.5.6, which I did...
Has anybody faced similar problem? Rgds, Artur
Remark: I use officially not supported configuration for TM - with external drive on network SMB drive.

Download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget from: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window.
If you only have one user account, create another one temporarily, with normal privileges.
Then make some changes in your Home Folder and do a +Back Up Now+ from the TM icon in the menubar.
Then log out. Wait for a few seconds, and log back in, as the other user.
Check the widget. If TM hasn't done another backup, do another +Back Up Now+ (from the non-FileVault user account) and check again.
If TM hasn't backed-up the main user's Home Folder, or you see something there that seems suspicious, copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).
If you're not sure what it actually backed-up, you might want to download the TimeTracker app, from www.charlessoft.com.
It shows most of the files saved by TM for each backup (excluding some hidden/system files, etc.). I'm not sure whether it will show the details of the encrypted home folder, or just a big disk image, but something should appear.

This is a common mistake and I highly advise against it.
1: TimeMachine saves states of changes and thus requires more room on the TM drive than the boot drive it's backing up.
2: Something happens to the TM drive, loss, theft, dropped, power surge, etc., you lose both backups.
3: The storage drive might become a portable need, with it being on the TM drive, now your increasing the risk to the TM backup that something could happen to it along with the storage drive, due to increased movement.

  • Time Machine stopped backup

Time Machine has stopped the backup procedure and claims that there is not sufficient space. The disk has 750 GB out of which 580 GB are used and 169 GB free. The error message claims 48,76 GB would be needed, but only 30,02 are available. I am really puzzled. Please help!

  • Time machine stops backup

Time machine reports that I do not have enough room on my backup disk. There is enough and it will not delete older items. I am using LIon.

First, are you running Leopard or Snow Leopard? You've posted in the Leopard forum, your first post says you're running +Snow Leopard,+ and your second doesn't specify anything. (Please click +My Settings+ at the right of this page and fill-in the info, so it will appear automatically on each post.)
So you saw "Copying xxx GB of yyy GB," and the "xxx" stopped changing? If so, see #D2 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

Time Machine has stopped backing up automatically. On manual backups, it stops after backing up only part of my data. I have since reformatted my backup disk and reconfigured Time Machine, but it still does not complete the backup HELP!!!!

  • Time machine "stop backup now"?

I was researching on what would happen if i stopped the backup mid-backup. the help notes for time machine say that if you hit "stop backup now" it'll stop, but then if you hit "back up now" after that it'll pick up right where it left off...
i'm doing my intial backup and was at the 20GB mark and hit "stop back up now" to test it out. left it for 5 mins and then hit "back up now" and it restarted back at 0. all of this was done from the menu bar.
can anyone tell me if this is how it will be? have i set it up wrong?

This has been answered here so may times (especially by pondini, e.g. in this thread Time Machine stuck in repeating "preparing files" cycle), so please search this forum the next time before asking such a question.

  • Time Machine Stopped Backups

I have been using Time Machine on a 500 GB Time Capsule for several years.  Recently I got error messages indicating that TM could no longer make backups because there is insufficent space on the hard drive.  I switched to another backup drive, and it seems to be making backups again, but I wouldlike to have my backups only in one place (on the Time Capsule drive).  I thought TM was supposed to continually delete older backups to make room for newer ones, so it would never run out of space.  How do I get it to do that so I can swich back to the TC drive?  Thanks!

A clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of  Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.
    Also see #C4 there.

  • Help! Time Machine completely backups my IMAP Account - everytime...

    Hi Folks!
About two weeks ago my 500 GB TM Backupvolume reached it's limits without adding / changing an considerable amount of files.
Smelling something fishy it appears that, on closer inspection via TimeTracker, that Timemachine keeps backing up my Gmail-IMAP Folder in my homefolder\library... this weighing an impressive +20 GB.
It even appears that there was no initial backup... . Please have a look at this... as I might be misinterpreting it... .
I already dumped the timemachine preference file, deleted all backups and started all over again, but the problem persists.
What could it be, that is causing this annoyance? And how can I stop it?
I am grateful for any help concerning this matter... . Thanks alot!

  • HT4522 Time Machine's backup to Time Capsule has stopped working

TM reports "an error". The Time Capsule is visible in the "shared" tab of the Finder window, but is listed as "Not connected". It is visible and connected to another Mac on the net. Is there a solution short of using the Airport Utility to erase the drive?

  • Time Machine stopped backing up but doesn't give warning/error

    Hi,
by chance I noticed, that Time Machine doesn't backup up any more, but still doesn't give errors.  In Console I see the following for a now typical run:
    21.04.15 09:58:11,493 com.apple.backupd: Starting standard backup
    21.04.15 09:58:12,043 com.apple.backupd: Backing up to: /Volumes/drosera-backup-02/Backups.backupdb
    21.04.15 09:58:41,729 com.apple.backupd: 5.18 GB required (including padding), 96.84 GB available
    21.04.15 09:58:55,149 com.apple.backupd: Copied 23 files (93 bytes) from volume Macintosh HD.
    21.04.15 09:59:04,385 com.apple.backupd: Copied 36 files (93 bytes) from volume DATA.
21.04.15 09:59:06,100 mds: (Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:2 for volume
    21.04.15 09:59:06,102 com.apple.backupd: Starting post-backup thinning
    21.04.15 09:59:07,668 com.apple.backupd: Deleted /Volumes/drosera-backup-02/Backups.backupdb/drosera/2015-04-20-183344 (24.0 KB)
    21.04.15 09:59:07,668 com.apple.backupd: Post-back up thinning complete: 1 expired backups removed
    21.04.15 09:59:07,762 com.apple.backupd: Backup completed successfully.
The 5.18 GB are never backed up.  The backup drive (drosera-backup-02) is attached by FireWire.  I have checked the disk with First Aid, I have disconnected and reconnected it.  I removed the backup disk from Time Machine, stopped TM and reconfigured.  I stopped mds, ran backups and reenabled mds.  All to no avail.
I am at a complete loss and I'd appreciate to get this running w/o having to remove all existing backups.  Any ideas or pointers?
I'm running Mac OS X 10.7.5 on a Mac mini
    Cheers
    Frank

Thx.  I had already tried the hints from mds: (Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:2 for volume to no avail.  Your tip to rebuild the Spotlight index would probably helped, too.  But just before getting yout comment and after reading http://pondini.org/TM/Works.html and http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/69054/force-time-machine-to-perform-a-d eep-traversal I had simply removed /.fseventsd and reran a backup.  That seems to have fixed the problem (at least for the time being).
Interesting side note: During the non-backup phase I created a new account on the Mac and ran TM.  This triggered a one-time working backup of the whole system, but all subsequent backups again failed silently.  Additionally the externally attached FireWire harddrive was always backed up correctly, only backups of the local drive failed.

  • Time Machine stopped backing up to Time Capsule

Three weeks ago, my Time Machine stopped backing up to My Time Capsule. I get a Time Machine Error that says the backup disk is not available. When I go into Time Machine on my Systems Preferences and click Select Disk, I get None. If I then go to Set Up Time Capsule, Airport Utility finds my Time Capsule.
I click through where it asks whether I want to change some settings for this Time Capsule. I click all the way through, changing nothing. And of course, I haven't resolved the problem. I don't want to go back to factory settings because I have archived a lot of old home movies on the Time Capsule and am afraid I'll lose them.
The only changes I've made recently that may affect this have to do with a mobileme account. I've been using one mobileme account for work for several years. Three weeks before I started having problems with the Time Capsule, I started a MobileMe account for the family. Now, when I sync all of our machines, the system looks for a new local host, which I have created. About the time I started syncing my computers is about the time the Time Machine stopped backing up.
Can switching between the two local hosts be the source of my problem?

  • Time Machine stops backing up external disk

I have 907 GB of backups on my WD 1 TB backup disk. Further backups blocked. Tried unsuccessfully to erase disk with utility. Support item MAC OS X 10.5 ("Time Machine stops backing up on external disk") gave instructions for partitioning the back up disk: "Partition failed could not unmount disk" Ran disk utility again. Verified and ran repair to backup disk. Response is that partition is okay. Have heard that Mountain Lion can cause backup problems. Anybody help please?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • In regard to Time Machine. I have two accounts one is an admin account, the other is a standard user account. When I implement Time Machine when I am logged into the Admin account, is the standard user also backed up?

    in regard to Time Machine.
I have two accounts on one Macbook Pro running OS 10.6.8. One account is an admin account, the other is a standard user account.
When I initially implemented Time Machine I was logged into the Admin account. I allowed Time Machine to erase the drive and backup the computer. Is the standard user account contents also backed up?
Also after I completed the Time Machine backup session, I turned off Time Machine and removed the portable hard drive. I plan to return in to Time Machine after being away from the portable hard drive for approximately a month. After a short interruption of approximately one month, when the Macbook Pro is reconnected and Time Machine is turned back on, will Time Machine create a new instance of a backup? WIll the back up contain the standard user account changes?

Time Machine backs up by default all the user accounts.
When you reconnect the backup drive after one month, Time Machine will do an incremental backup and it might take a while minutes to hours depending on how much has been changed. With a gap of a month, Time Machine will have to do a lengthier than normal survey of both drives to see what has changed, so it might take some time preparing for the backup. The backup will include everything that has changed since the previous one.

  • Using Time Machine to backup a iMac G5 and restore to an intel iMac

Is it possible to use Time Machine to backup my iMac G5 and restore my backup to a new intel iMac?
The reason being is that I my mother-in-law's company bought her a new intel Mac and she wants to trade with me since she only uses her Mac for e-mail, photos and accounting software.
I was thinking of making sure her data is preserved by using the migration assistant to transfer her data to my iMac G5 and then using my time machine backup to restore to her intel iMac. I have concerns about this method after reading about the intel/powerpc issues with time machine. I also have concerns that perhaps the version of MacOS 10.5 installed to my iMac G5 will not be optimized for intel.

Well, not entirely. You cannot install or restore a PPC version of OS X to an Intel Mac because the PPC system will not work on an Intel Mac. You can copy your personal files, most preference files, and third-party applications (although it would be preferable to update all PPC-only apps to universal binaries which perform better on Intel machines.
Another possible concern is if your mother's company is transferring the ownership to her or simply purchasing the unit for her to use. In the latter case the computer belongs to the company, not your mother. She cannot then give it to you because it isn't hers. This problem should be resolved beforehand because the company may one day want the computer back.
Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)

  • Time Machine stops due to computer going into Sleep/Hibernation Mode

Time Machine stops due to computer going into Sleep/Hibernation Mode then restarts to try to start the Back up process again and again vicious cycle. I have made sure all settings are turned off. I have done one or two backups since the initial first backup. My HDD is almost full and I want it backed up before I try to clone/mirror the drive to upgrade it to a 1TB HDD. Thank you in advance.

Set the Energy Saver (in System Preferences) to Never. Then reset the NVRAM, as follows:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time.
    Release the keys.
