Time Machine stops after reset in OS X 10.9 ? What is the solution ?

Time Machine stops after reset in OS X 10.9 ? What is the solution ?

Time Machine shows the time of the last backup and it shows a MB-count while backing up.
So it seems to work. Only the Time Machine symbol does not work.
Thanks for your tip.

  • Time Machine stops after ~ 2GB out of 330GB

External drive is 500 GB USB, formatted correctly - Mac OS Extended (Journaled), GUID partition table. Using an early 2006 MacBook Pro Core Duo. Internal and external drives both checked with Disk Utility and didn't need repair. I've read through the Time Machine Help for OS 10.6 and didn't find anything about Time Machine other than the short description on the partitioning types compatible with Time Machine.
It gets a few minutes into the 1st backup and just halts. The package file is:   2012-02-22-11430.InProgress
I've tried this many times and it never gets past a few GB. Doing a Get Info on the latest shows the package file to be 2.64 GB. When the process started, the progress bar showed normal progress ( n GB out of 330.xx GB). The process just ends, the progress bar goes away.
I've tried this with the external plugged into a USB hub and directly into a port on the MBP and results are the same.
Alarmingly, after a few of the halts, when I tried to access either the internal or external drives either during (or right after) having the Time Machine pref window open, the Finder froze completely. I coul not even Control-Option-Escape and relaunch the Finder. I had to hold the power button down to shut the machine off and do a cold start.
Is Time Machine still buggy under 10.6.8. I wouldn't have thought so by this date.
The only other behavior on this machine that is "odd" I'll say. It doesn't affect the way the machine operates in any way that I can see, but whenever I do a Repair Disk Permissions on the Mac Internal HD in Disk Utility, there are literally thousands of disk permissions repaired every time I run it. Typical would be something like: ACL found and was unexpected for xxxxxxx. Then it repairs it. The permissions being repaired are for literally thousands of paths for stuff that hasn't run since the last permission repair. So any thoughts on this and whether there's any link between the disk permissions issue and the Time Machine halting issue would be appreciated. Again, the disk permissions issue hasn't affected any other operation of this computer.

The problem was thermal. The machine was stopping to keep itself from burning up. The 2006 MBP overheated until I put Fan Control in it and adjusted the min fan speed to 2800 rpm and adjusted the 6000 rpm max to occur at a lower temperature. After the adjustments, a full Time Machine backup ran and the temp maxed out at about 230F; about 20 deg below the thermal cutout trip point.

  • Time machine broken after 10.9.5 update

Time machine will not run after installing 10.9.5.   TM was successful 10.9.4 20 minutes before I updated.  When TM does a backup, the dialog says  "711GB free of 1TB" and "backing up X of 6GB".  After a while it says "time machine unexpectedly ran out of disk space" and quits.  This happened twice.  The third time TM tried to backup, it took 30 minutes to get to "backing up 90K of 6GB", so I gave up.
Anybody else having issues like this?

    Hey northsidemike,
Thanks for the question and detailed information. I understand that you are experiencing issues creating a Time Machine backup after updating to OS X 10.9.5. The following resource includes multiple links for troubleshooting Time Machine issues. I’ve included a few that are related to your issue:

  • Time machine stop working suddenly

not sure if it's related 10.5.6 upgrade but recently, I realize that the Time Machine stops working. I'm using a USB hard disc the backup drive. It's been working perfectly for a few months. But in the past 1 or 2 weeks, it doesn't back up anything at all. It always show "Preparing Backup..."... and that's it
I don't even know how to trouble-shoot! any help?

    Did you find this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1516
Assuming you did, how much of your HD is used, and how long did the initial TM backup take?
Since the initial backup succeeded, have you disconnected and reconnected your drive, or powered-down, or anything?
And how long has it said "preparing"?
Also, it's possible you might find something in the system log.
Use the Console app, in your Applications/Utilities folder. Click on Show Log List at the upper left, then navigate in the sidebar to your system.log (current) or system.log.0.bz2, etc (previous).
Most of what's in there is just info, and not intelligible to us mere mortals.
You're looking for messages from backupd, and/or backupd.helper. Copy anything suspicions and post them here. Maybe somebody can decipher them.

  • Time Machine stops backing up external disk

I have 907 GB of backups on my WD 1 TB backup disk. Further backups blocked. Tried unsuccessfully to erase disk with utility. Support item MAC OS X 10.5 ("Time Machine stops backing up on external disk") gave instructions for partitioning the back up disk: "Partition failed could not unmount disk" Ran disk utility again. Verified and ran repair to backup disk. Response is that partition is okay. Have heard that Mountain Lion can cause backup problems. Anybody help please?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • After upgrading to OS X Mavericks Time machine stops working

After upgrading to OS X Mavericks Time machine stops backing up and sometimes hangs on ,,preparing,, for o days and sometimes stops inmediatly. Report says:
    Backing up to /dev/disk1s2: /Volumes/Backup/Backups.backupdb
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSRangeException', reason: '*** -[__NSArrayM objectAtIndex:]: index 0 beyond bounds for empty array'

Is this a Firewire or Thunderbolt connected disk?  There are know issues with that in Mavericks.  If so try connecting the drive by USB as you continue.
Is it a WD drive?  There appear to be issues with those drive on Mavericks.

I had to restore my iMac from Time Machine. After the restoration all programs are functioning except my Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium. When I start any program in the suite the error message, "Licensing for this product has stopped working." I restarted the computer and tried again to run Photoshop and the same error message appeared. The message was followed by a message that stated that I needed to contact Adobe technical support and mention Error: 150.30. I need Adobe technical support to provide me a solution for my problem so I can continue using my Adobe products installed on my computer.

Unfortunately when Adobe products are restored from backup, especial CS4 and especially Mac, it breaks licensing.
There is a python script included in the license recovery kit that should work if you are familiar with Terminal.
If not, you must reinstall your CS4 suite.  You don't need to delete your preferences, so it should be the same as before.

  • Time Machine Stopped Working After Update

I updated the most recent OSX 10.6.3 and disk utility etc. then suddenly my time machine stopped backing up to external disk attached to Airport Extreme. I have a Seagate drive attached to the AE. I can see the drive and I can see the time machine folders. If i go to TM preferences I can select the drive. But when it goes to back up error message says "backup disk not available." Itunes library is also on same disk (partitioned) and works fine.
Any help would be very, very appreciated!

As Jolly Giant says, this is +*not supported by Apple.+* It does work, sometimes, for some folks (including me), but is not especially reliable. I cannot recommend strongly enough that you keep secondary backups, probably to an external HD, via CarbonCopyCloner, SuperDuper, or the like. Also note that your iTunes library on that disk is not being backed-up by Time Machine.
It's possible your backups are corrupted (that happens on occasion via an Airport, and may be why Apple doesn't support it). Try repairing them, per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
If Disk Utility can't repair them, it's possible +Disk Warrior+ or a similar app can. DW costs about $100, and is probably a good investment for the future, but there's no guarantee.
Otherwise, your only choices are to delete the sparse bundle or erase the partition and start over, or back up to a directly-attached disk (a much better solution).

  • Time Machine stopped backing up but doesn't give warning/error

    Hi,
by chance I noticed, that Time Machine doesn't backup up any more, but still doesn't give errors.  In Console I see the following for a now typical run:
    21.04.15 09:58:11,493 com.apple.backupd: Starting standard backup
    21.04.15 09:58:12,043 com.apple.backupd: Backing up to: /Volumes/drosera-backup-02/Backups.backupdb
    21.04.15 09:58:41,729 com.apple.backupd: 5.18 GB required (including padding), 96.84 GB available
    21.04.15 09:58:55,149 com.apple.backupd: Copied 23 files (93 bytes) from volume Macintosh HD.
    21.04.15 09:59:04,385 com.apple.backupd: Copied 36 files (93 bytes) from volume DATA.
21.04.15 09:59:06,100 mds: (Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:2 for volume
    21.04.15 09:59:06,102 com.apple.backupd: Starting post-backup thinning
    21.04.15 09:59:07,668 com.apple.backupd: Deleted /Volumes/drosera-backup-02/Backups.backupdb/drosera/2015-04-20-183344 (24.0 KB)
    21.04.15 09:59:07,668 com.apple.backupd: Post-back up thinning complete: 1 expired backups removed
    21.04.15 09:59:07,762 com.apple.backupd: Backup completed successfully.
The 5.18 GB are never backed up.  The backup drive (drosera-backup-02) is attached by FireWire.  I have checked the disk with First Aid, I have disconnected and reconnected it.  I removed the backup disk from Time Machine, stopped TM and reconfigured.  I stopped mds, ran backups and reenabled mds.  All to no avail.
I am at a complete loss and I'd appreciate to get this running w/o having to remove all existing backups.  Any ideas or pointers?
I'm running Mac OS X 10.7.5 on a Mac mini
    Cheers
    Frank

Thx.  I had already tried the hints from mds: (Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:2 for volume to no avail.  Your tip to rebuild the Spotlight index would probably helped, too.  But just before getting yout comment and after reading http://pondini.org/TM/Works.html and http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/69054/force-time-machine-to-perform-a-d eep-traversal I had simply removed /.fseventsd and reran a backup.  That seems to have fixed the problem (at least for the time being).
Interesting side note: During the non-backup phase I created a new account on the Mac and ran TM.  This triggered a one-time working backup of the whole system, but all subsequent backups again failed silently.  Additionally the externally attached FireWire harddrive was always backed up correctly, only backups of the local drive failed.

  • Time machine stops in the middle of first backup

I just bought a LaCie external hard drive, plugged it into my Mac Mini and started Time Machine. Everything looked fine but at 20,46 GB it stopped and would not progress any further. I tried to stop the backup but it would not. I restarted, reformatted the drive and tried again and the same thing happened. It stops at 20,46 GB again.
    HFS+
    Firewire
    GUID partition scheme
    Intel Mac
Name of computer contains only English characters.

No I have not excluded my internal drive and it did after all backup 20 GB of it before stalling.
I tried your suggestion about booting from the install DVD. Time Machine did a lot of preparation but the problem remained. This time it stopped after 20.45 GB.
I started again from scratch and only included the Applications folder. Backup completed successfully.
Then I added the Library folder. That worked too.
Then I added the Users folder. Not so good. It got stuck from the very beginning at 0 bytes.
When I try to stop a stuck backup it also hangs trying to stop. I haven't waited very long for that to finish but it seems stuck.
Now I went in and exluded 3 of the 4 user folders while it was stuck at 0 bytes. Then it automatically tried to stop the backup which it is still stuck trying to do. I'll give it some more time to see if something happens. If not I will have to restart again.
Even though there was nothing obviously suspicious relating to backupd in the logs they are actually flooded with other messages like the ones below. There were some more backupd messages that I was not sure if they were normal or not but now I cannot find them in the logs anymore probably because they have been "pushed out" by all the other messages like these:

  • Time Machine Backups after recent upgrade to Mountain Lion

Basically to keep a long story short - i need to take my computer in for repair tomorrow. I recently did an upgrade to Mountain Lion a day or two ago. I haven't done a Time Machine backup until today (a couple days after i upgraded to Mountain Lion) because i wanted to make sure that my previous TM backup (Snow Leopard 10.6.8) was the most up to date and best update that i could revert back to if i had any issues with Mountain Lion, or any application compatibility, etc etc.
I don't have any broken applications and it seems like Mountain Lion is running better than Snow Leopard. However, as i said - i'm taking my computer in for repair tomorrow, i would like to know that i have the most up to date Time Machine backup with the new Mountain Lion so that when i restore it back from my Time Machine backup after i get it back from repair, i won't have any issues with the migration, which could potentially lead me into more technicalities.
I have a 500GB Harddrive, with about 70GB left of free space....I did the initial backup prior to upgrading to Mountain Lion, and it upgraded 400+GB of info, now, since Mountain Lion - the first backup with Mountain Lion initially said 46GB - then it went down to 14GB by the time it was all said and done....so what exactly did it back up?
Did it back up all the necessary files to keep Mountain Lion running smoothly when i restore it back to the way it was after i get it back? Did it not back everything up that it needs to? Is it safe to erase my internal drive and do a clean installation so i can take it in, and not worry about not being able to migrate things back over or applications not working correctly?
When i get it back, i presume it will come with Mountain Lion back on it and i can just boot up into the Recovery Disk and restore it from a Time Machine backup that way, correct?
    Thanks for the help.
    - Jason

I received the same error and experienced the same issue that you have described but after performing a Time Capsule soft reset and then toggling the TM Off and then back On I was able issue a backup now and see my previous backups.
Here is the link to where I posted my fix; https://discussions.apple.com/message/19069543#19069543. Someone else had success using a different method. The only comment / complaint that I have since the ML OS X upgrade is that TM now takes at least 20 to 30 seconds before I can click/select a backup.
    I hope this helps.

  • Time Machine stops due to computer going into Sleep/Hibernation Mode

Time Machine stops due to computer going into Sleep/Hibernation Mode then restarts to try to start the Back up process again and again vicious cycle. I have made sure all settings are turned off. I have done one or two backups since the initial first backup. My HDD is almost full and I want it backed up before I try to clone/mirror the drive to upgrade it to a 1TB HDD. Thank you in advance.

Set the Energy Saver (in System Preferences) to Never. Then reset the NVRAM, as follows:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time.
    Release the keys.

  • Time Machine stopped backing up iMac

My Time Machine has stopped backing up my iMac. It is a 2Tb TM with 693GB still available and has been working fine since I got it out of the box in August 2012.
Watching the process a few times it seemed to get stuck on calculating changes. Investigating this I then followed instructions to delete com.apple.TimeMachine.plist from the root library, restart the Time Machine and iMac, then reconnect the Time Machine to the iMac, at which point there is a 120 second countdown and the backup starts.
No luck. Still calculating changes. I let the process just run for days and days without altering anything on my iMac. No backups taken.
I followed instructions to verify disk and it said that there was descrepancy. So I then followed instructions to boot on MAC OS X installer disk a verify and repair hard disk. Result was that after repair it said everything looks OK.
Again retried the reboot and iMac/Time Machine again several times, gets through scanning and then preparing items but never actually backs up.
    Downloaded the widget and it says that UUIDs don't match and goes into an indexing routine;
Waiting for Index to be ready (101)
for quite some some the says
    Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:must scan subdirs|new event db|
I leave the process to run but never seems to actually backup. I get an error
Error: Flushing index to disk returned an error: 0
I then leave it to run on its own schedule for several days but still not backup complete.
Time Machine says last backup was 28th May 2014.
I should add that the same Time Machine is regularly backing up my Macbook Air as normal without the same issues. My iMac is OSX 10.6.8.
How can I get Time Machine to start backing up my iMac again?

    Deleting the sparsebundle worked. Eventually.
Much like other posts I had to connect to Time Capsule from a Windows machine to delete the sparsebundle. Didn't seem to want to from my iMac!!!
Took a day to delete the sparsebundle and another half day (over ethernet cable) to do the backup but since then backups performing properly.
    Thank you.
