Time Machine takes up much more space than actually data backed up...
Every time I backup with time machine, it uses up gigs of space on my backup drive, regardless of increment or decrement of data on Mac. I could put 200 megs since last backup and TM eats 4 gigs. I don't change the file exclusion selections at all. Just curious if anyone knows why that is?
I find it hard to believe I added 4gb since last backup.
You'd be surprised. Sometimes you add more than you think. Any downloads, recently edited documents, etc all will add to the total. Plus system files such as browser history are updated and backed up as well. If it has been a few days since your last backup, I wouldn't worry. If this is happening ALL the time and you know that you have been barely using your computer, you may have a problem that needs to be further looked into.

Time Machine backup requires significantly more space than size of hard drive + external
I can't seem to figure out what is going on here. I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro with a 1T SSD hard drive, upgrading from an older MB Pro with a 500 GB hard drive. In the past I've used Time Machine to back up my hard drive and an external hard drive with RAW format photos and video footage that totals 441.56 GB. My internal internal hard drive currently is 487 GB, and I've used a 1TB time machine back up without problem to date.
I used Time Machine to install on the new system and it worked flawlessly, except that the Time Machine backups wouldn't continue. Time Machine--even when left overnight--would get hung up on Preparing Files to Back Up. So, I reformatted the Time Machine disk (lost the old backups) and attempted to back up from scratch. I then got a message that I need 3.37 TB to complete my new Time Machine back up, though the total size of the back up on disk is ~930 GB. I've read that Time Machine needs 20% - 30% overhead on disk to work well, but I can't figure out why it would require 3x the back up size. I'm hesitant to purchase a new 4 TB external hard drive as I suspect this is a software issue. I've tried reformatting the disk twice more (three total), rebooting my computer, etc. but I keep getting the 3.37 TB message. I'm operating Mavericks OS 10.9.4.
I would be grateful for insight on this.

AlexHi Linc, thanks for taking a look at this problem. I just reinitiated a backup to make sure it's most up-to-date. Without the external hard drive, I was able to complete a simple backup. After plugging the external in again, here's the log I got:

Same photos take up much more space on ipad than iphone
is this supposed to happen? the exact same photo selections i am syncing to both iphone and ipad take up much more room on the ipad. on iphone what takes up 6 gb winds up taking up over 22 gb on the ipad!!
The file size thing is a feature, not a bug. The version that your iPhone gets is converted to a smaller size, as it was thought that people wouldn't need to be sending huge filesize photos from your iPhone, but an iPad is meant to display higher resolution photos, so it can work with a weightier version of the file.

Time Machine not using any more space?
My Time Machine backups go back to Jan 4, and show the expected pattern of hourly, daily, and weekly folders each of which appears to be about 78 GB. The log looks fine.
Time Machine Preferences indicates that it is backing up about 90 GB. On my 500 GB (nominal) USB2 backup drive the space in use has remained at about 101 GB for weeks, despite many Time Machine backups each day of about 1 GB each (big because of a big Microsoft Entourage message database that changes every time an email comes in).
This makes no sense to me. The space in use should be increasing by at least 1 GB per day, and the free space should be decreasing by the same amount, but both stay essentially constant.
Any explanation?The answer was OS updates that made Time Machine far more reliable.
Beware though -- if an OS glitch causes your Mac to lose its date and time, as happened to me a few weeks ago, you need to turn off Time Machine promptly or it will re-save every file on your hard drive. It took a couple of full restarts after I got the date and time corrected before I could turn Time Machine back on and not have it report that it had to save hundreds of gigabytes of files. -
Will Time Machine backup 2 internal HDs and put the data back into them when restoring?

I would also recommend spending a few dollars and buy CCC or superduper. Make a backup of each drive. These 3rd party backup programs are more flexible and you can create direct images of the drives. It makes recovery a much much easier process.
If it is a Mac Pro put in another disk for TM backups and use a USB or even esata card and external sata drive for backups using CCC. Doing it that way you can make a bootable image of your main drive. -
Photos take up much more space on iPhone than on disk?
I have 3800 photos exported from Picasa with a max-width of 480. On disk, they take 267Mbytes. After optimizing and transferring to the iPhone, suddenly they're taking 2.45GB ??
Secondary question, repeated from others: Can you store higher-res pictures on the iPhone and zoom into them? My experiments with optimizing showed that photos exported at 1600, 800, or 480 all look the same after being synced to the iPhone.

Movie using much more space than file size
Hello. I published a movie in imovie to the media gallery in HD. It is a long video, so I knew it would take up a lot of space. It is listed as 5 GB in my imovie project folder. However, when I "show package contents" of the movie, the actual size of the 720 movie is only 1.3 gb. All of the other folders listed in the contents are just a few MB. Any idea why this is using 5gb of not only my hard drive, but of my Mobile Me space, when it seems like the video should only be using 1.5 GB.
You can see the video here, but obviously it takes some time to buffer.

I recently ran into a problem with syncing my ipod touch to itunes on my Windows 7 pc. It had previously been synced to my older laptop
and I wanted to change to my newer Windows 7 laptop's itunes library that I had already been syncing with.
Anyway, I started seeing this message that prevents my from syncing:
The iPod "Bill's iPod" cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes library
(additional 2.48 GB required)
Not sure if it is talking about my iPod free space or my PC itunes library free space. Either way I have 11.0 GB free space available
on my iPod and 412 GB free space available on my Windows 7 PC.
How do I handle this problem? Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ThanksIt is saying that the iPod does not have enough free storage to sync all the items yu have selected to sync to the iPod. You need 2.48 GB more free on the iPod. You need either to select less to sync or delete some content form the iPod.

Warp stabilizer counting much more frames than actually exists...
Hello, everyone!
I've just installed Premiere CC 2014 and I'm having problems with Warp Stabilizer... I'm trying to use it in clip with 25s and 24fps, but when I click "Analyze" it shows 1035764 frames! Also, it will take 2560 minutes to analyze it all! Doing the math, it should have only something like 600 frames and take much less time...
I know this stabilizer is very buggy, but I couldn't find a solution for this. Can anyone help me?

RMAN backup uses more space than actual DB size

Yesterday, we have configured the RMAN backup for an RAC db in HP-UX. The total DB size is 82GB
but the RMAN took around 250G space for backup and the backup failed. The oracle db is 10.2.0.1.

Hi.
Can anyone help. I have a two 1TB external hard drives one backs the other up. Until now it has been fine but suddenly time machine has decided theres not enough room even though there the same size drives. Ive deleted the backup drive and the time machine preferences but it still wont work. I have one drive with 930GB on and time machine says it needs 1.1TB of space. Why dose it need an extra 170GB. Help?
ThanksSince Time Machine keeps copies of previous versions of things you've changed or deleted, it needs much more space than the data it's backing-up.
The extra 170 GB is for "padding" -- workspace on the backup volume, and in case the original estimate isn't accurate, or more files are changed or added while the backup is running.
#1 in the link Carolyn supplied explains this a bit more, and recomends that your backup drive be 2-3 times the size of the data it's backing-up. -

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Time Machine keeps copies of everything on your system (except a few things like system work files, most caches and logs, and trash), so the first backup will be a bit smaller than the amount of data on your system.
Subsequent backups will copy things you've added or changed, but doesn't delete the copies of the old versions, or of things you've deleted, so you can restore them if you find you've deleted or changed something in error, or something has gotten corrupted. Thus Time Machine will need considerably more space. IIn most cases, it won't delete it's copies until it runs out of room.
It varies depending on how you use your Mac, but a "rule of thumb" is, it needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up to be able to keep a reasonable "depth" of backups for you.

OLAP taking 5 time more space than RDBMS?

I have been investigating Oracle's OLAP capabilities for about 2 weeks now in an effort to determine whether OLAP would be a feasible solution for my company's data warehousing needs.
I have created an extremely simple analytic workspace that is based on a single relational fact table. The fact table contains both the dimension values (integers) and the measuers (floats). There are a total of about 300,000 dimension values all of which reference measures (the data is perfectly dense).
I created a dimension and a data cube using the Enterprise Manager OLAP interface. Next, I created the analytic workspace using the Analytic Workspace Manager wizard. This AW building step took an extraordinary amount of time considering the simplicity of the data. In fact, I started it on a Friday afternoon, monitored it for about 2 hours, and it still hadn't finished, so I let it run over the weekend (for this reason, I am not sure how much time exactly it took, but it's definitely quite a few hours). Is this normal? Copying the relational table takes 10 seconds, and I find it hard to believe that building an AW with the same data would take so much time.
Finally, coming back on Monday I see that the AW was created successfully. I went into the tablespace map to look at how big the binary blob is. To my great surprise, the AW was taking up about 5 times more extents than my relational table (contrary to what I've read so far about OLAP and its supposedly very storage-efficient data cubes).
I was wondering if anybody could advise me on what I could have done wrong and/or inefficiently? Am I missing something here, or is OLAP really consuming much more space comapred to relational tables?

Well, here are a few ideas:
1) There is a bug in the 9i OLAP where dimension loads take WAY too long. I have a dimension with approx 77,000 members. On 9i, it took hours to load. On 10g 10.1.0.3 it loads in under 1 minute. You might want to open a TAR, the bug was something about one of the patch sets not being applied right
2) From a space standpoing, I wouldn't worry about this too much. When the AW wizard creates an "empty" workspace, it already has lots of items in it that support the metadata, etc. Also, there is the concept of "free pages" that get allocated but end up not being used (they are "temp")
To check this out, attach your AW and then fire up the OLAP worksheet. To see "free" pages vs. "used" pages, do the following:
show aw(pages)
show aw(freepages)
One last thing you can do, to see the size of all items in the AW:
attach AWname ro first
limit name to all
sort name d obj(disksize)
rpr w 40 obj(disksize)

"Manually manage music and videos" takes up more space than syncing?
Hello all,
I fear that I am just stupid and unseeing an obvious answer to this query, but ask I shall, because it is frustrating me to no end.
I recently downloaded a few audiobooks from my local library to listen to on my iPod Touch; the app in question requires that you "manually manage music and videos" rather than syncing. Fine.
I switch over to iTunes, check the box, and now my music--without changing anything, mind--is now taking up an additional 1.8 (or more) gigs on my iPod. I toggle the option to "manually manage" on and off, and with it "on", my music takes up more space than with it "off", even though it's the same music, same podcasts.
Can someone please explain to me why syncing manually takes up more space than syncing automatically and where the extra gigs are coming from? There's not that much audio on my iPod--1.52 gb of music, 1.97 gb of podcasts and .69 gb of apps--which only adds up to 4.18 gb, and on an 8g touch, should leave me with about 4 gb of "wiggle room", so to speak, rather than .27 gb.
Help, please!iTunes will normally put just one copy of each file on the iPod and link it to multiple playlists. If your iPod's database has been corrupted at some point however, there may be unattached copies of your meadia from earlier sync attempts, taking up space on the drive, but not visible in the library. How much space does iTunes report for Other? Excluding files placed manually & intentionally on the iPod, "other" is typically an overhead of 1%-2% of the size of the media and represents the iPod database, artwork, games etc. If you have significantly larger amounts of "other" then you will need to restore your iPod in order to reclaim the space.
