Time Machine tediously slow.

I have an early 2008 Macbook Pro running OS X v 10.7.5 and Time Machine has just taken over 24 hours to do a simple backup. Can anyone offer any help? I am not at all 'techy' so simple answers please!

Yes, it does sometimes take a long time for the display to be "populated," especially on a network.  The extra-fancy display has lots of things going on, requiring much back-and-forth between the backups and your Mac.
The initial display can take a while, and when switching from one backup to another, or one folder to another, especially if the folder you're looking at has lots of files in it.  It's just a guess, but I suspect a lot of it is finding and displaying all the icons needed.
Try connecting to your TC via Ethernet temporarily.  It should be faster, but not wildly faster.  If it is, you may have a marginal WIFI connection, interference, etc.
If it's not much faster via Ethernet, something else may be going on.  Try the things in the green box of #D2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  The things there can slow down backups, but also retrieving them.

    My Time Machine WIFI slows down to an absolute crawl and then after I unplug it and plug it back in, it's back to normal.
    This is a classic case of the effects of wireless interference from other networks around you. See the link at the bottom for more information about this.
    It might first help to understand why things improve when you unplug the Time Capsule and then power it back up. When you do this, the Time Capsule will scan to find the best available wireless channels to use at the time.
    Unfortunately, other wireless routers are doing the same thing all the time, so after a few hours or a day or two, the channel(s) that the Time Capsule was using become overcrowded and the wireless slows down to a crawl. Cordless phones can also create interference issues for a wireless network as well as any number of other electronic devices.
    Unless you can convince other users around you to turn off their wireless routers, there is not much that you are going to be able to do to come up with a permanent fix. For now, locate the Time Capsule as far away from any outside walls in your home as possible and use the 5 GHz band for as many connections as you can.
    A friend of mine who recently moved into a new apartment complex has the same problem. He has to restart his wireless router at least twice a day, sometimes more on the weekends.  Too many wireless networks.....not enough channels.

    since i updated to maverics, the timemachine and the finder are extremly slowly, i mean realy much slowlier than "microsoft-speed". But i checked it again, i closed my MBP an found the white apple on it´s top..... its an apple. In different forums i read, that its a problem with spotlight. The backup with 4.87 GB is now, after 3 hours an 44 minutes at 3.84 GB.
    Even Microsoft is faster.

  • Time machine running slow and slowing network access

    I have had and continue to have issues with wifi on my MBP.  Those are pretty well summarized in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5535320?start=30&tstart=0.  I've been able to make mt system usable with some of the less dodgy workarounds in that thread ( like keeping a ping on my router running )
    That thread really doesn't mention the issues I've been having with time machine though, so I thought I'd bring this up here.  Whenever time machine starts up, Safari and mail become unresponsive.  It's worst when TM is "preparing" of "cleaningup", though barely usable during the actual backup.  Mostly, I can work around that too, but occationally, TM will find GB of data to be backed up and lock up my mac for a day.  Here's a recent example:

    This is on an AC router.  My peak throughput shows 19 Mb/s on menu meters, so, not great, but not this slow.  Mostly, the network activity is nothing with short bursts of higher throughput.
    I'm hoping this will be addressed in 10.9.2.  In the mean time, are there any workarounds to get past this issue short of turning off TM?
    Thanks,
    Horst

    These instructions were taken from Mac OS X Hints at:
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20050302225659382
    The Unix program dd is a disk copying util that you can use at the command line in order to make a disk image. It makes a bit-by-bit copy of the drive it's copying, caring nothing about filesystem type, files, or anything else. It's a great way to workaround the need for Norton Ghost.
    Normally, in order to make a disk image, the disk you're copying from has to be able to spin up and talk -- in other words, it's OK to make a copy if the disk is healthy. But what happens when your disk is becoming a doorstop? As long as it continues to spin, even with physical damage on the drive, dd and Mac OS X will get you out of the fire.
    We had a situation recently where a friend sent a disk to us that had hard physical errors on it. It would boot in Windows, but then it would hit one of these scratch marks and just die. We fired up dd, and it started OK, but stopped at the same physical error location -- complaining about a Hard Error.
    So the workaround was to designate the dd mode as noerror -- which just slides over the hard stops, and to add the mode sync, which fills the image with nulls at that point. We did it on BSD Unix, but as long as you can get the hard drive attached to your Mac, the command is the same:
    dd bs=512 if=/dev/rXX# of=/some_dir/foo.dmg conv=noerror,sync
    The bs=512 designates block size, and the if=/dev/rXX# is the UNIX path to the actual disk device. Make sure that the chosen directory (some_dir) has enough room to take the entire disk image -- which will be equal to the size of the drive. Since dd doesn't care about the contents of the drive, it copies every bit on the thing, so you get an image equal to the disk's capacity. A really big file. One workaround is to put it on a RAID array.
    Once you've established the disk image (in this example, foo.dmg), you're almost home. Here's where your Mac OS X box is far and away the best thing to have. In this example, the dd output file is foo.dmg. You have to realize that this is an exact copy of a busted drive, but the "holes" are filled with nulls. As long as the damage isn't to the boot sector, though, when you double-click on it, Mac OS X mounts it without breathing hard ... who cares if it's FAT32, NTFS, whatever.
    Due to the size of the image that we were copying, we put it on a RAID array, and had to access the image over the network -- it still mounted fine. In straight UNIX, if you try to mount a disk image, it complains that there is "no block device" and fails. Once your image is mounted, it appears in your Finder, and then it's easy work to retrieve the critical files from the image -- usually things like .doc files and .xls files and the lot.
    Finally, since your disk is actually dying, once you have your image, you can drop it to tape or something and you've not only recovered your files, you've made a viable backup as well. Once again, that which destroys a Windows box becomes a play thing to a Mac OS X box.

  • Why does ext HDD / time machine run slow?

    Apologies if this is answered else where, but I can't find any answers.
    I have a MBP running OSX 10.6.8. Connected to it as a Time Machine is a Freecom 400GB 28147 uk, external hardrive connected over USB 2.0. I also have a Mac Mini running 10.6.8.
    When connected to my MBP, I have found that it is extremely slow to read files. I gave up using it for Time Machine a while ago as I thought there was a problem Time Machine software causing it to run slow. I have also tried to read the time machine backups through finder and they are still slow to read.
    Today (don't know why i didn't do it before now) I plugged it in to my Mac Mini with USB 2.0 and found that I can read all the time machine files at lightning speed, far quicker than my MBP which can take 2-3 mins to open a folder. I have noticed that the hard drive doesn't make its usual whurring noise when im trying to open a folder using the MBP, right up until the last minute before the folder opens.
    Does any one have any idea about what might be causing the problem when the the ext HDD is connected to my MBP?
    Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated.

    How are you connected to it? Network problems could explain at least some of what you're seeing.
    More often then not I don't know how long the backups take because when it becomes to annoying I stop the backup.
    That guarantees that Time Machine will have to do a "deep scan" the next time, comparing everything on your system to the backups.   That does take a while, but if there are no other problems shouldn't have a major impact on performance.
    All of that said, I can't say for certain that there isn't something else going on.  Generally the way I notice the slowdown is when my keyboard inputs come out screwy -- ingB instead of Bring, pplAication for Applicaton for example.  When I know that this is happening I can work "around" it by typing the first letter, pausing for a second or two, then typing the remander.  Does any of this ring an bells?
    I've not heard of that specifically, but if you're connected to the Drobo wirelessly, and using a Bluetooth keyboard, there are reports of interference between the two. Try a wired keyboard temporarily, and/or different WIFI channels.

  • Is this first back up with Time Machine too slow?

    I'm running my first backup onto a new Western Digital Essential 1 terrabyte via a USB connection.
    It started at 2AM. It's now 9AM and the progress bar reads:
    "16.5 Gigs of 118 Gigs"
    That's a little better than two gigs an hour.
    This seems very slow to me and I'd like to know if that impression is correct. At that rate it seems like the back up will take more than two days.

    Yes, that's ridiculous. While Time Machine backups are slower than just copying things, and especially slower at the beginning, you should get roughly 40 - 60 GB/hour, on average.
    First, make sure the drive is set up properly, per #C1 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
    If so, try the things in the green box of #D2 there. Most of them can be done without cancelling the backup.

  • Time Machine very slow, Safari and iTunes have to Force Quit

    Anyone else having these issues after Mavericks "upgrade"?
    Time Machine is so slow as to be ineffective of useless, symtoms:
         - takes hours to prepare and run a backup of a couple of GB to the Time Capsule, anything up to 20 hrs!
         - constantly revising the amount to be backed up, up and down
         - seems to freeze periodically ad stick part way through with no change to the backed amount for hours, then speeds up, freezes, speeds up
         - time remaining estimate alternates between "casculating, estimates of hours and seconds! wildly inaccurate
                  - it's been saying 5 seconds remaining for the last 2 hrs.
         - have done two backup verifications to check for Time Capsule problems - none
         - only two successful backups achieved since the Maverisks "upgrade" due to the time it takes
         - both Time Capsule and Airport Express have the latest firmware and software
    Coincident with this, both Safari and iTunes (the latest Mavericks compatible versions) both freeze when trying to quit them - have to force quit.  Both experience random slow downs and with the spinning rainbow beachball.
    Looks like a Mavericks problem with the Wifi and Timemachine?
    Using a late 2008 aluminium unibody Macbook with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, 100Gb of free space o the SSD.  Connecting via Wifi to Time Capsule (2TB, with 1.8TB free) and Airport Express (both n Wifi).

    Check whether there is a crash report:
    Go to your Applications Folder and open your Utilities Folder. Open the application Console.
    In the left-hand column, click on Crash Reporter.
    Click on the small triangle under Crash Reporter in the l/h column and they will all be listed.
    Scroll down to the latest Safari report and click on it.
    Now click on the r/h column (which now only shows THAT crash report and then Command-a to copy it all.
    Come back here and Command-v it to post it here!

  • Time machine ridiculously slow since upgrading to Lion

    Hiya,
    I have a Macbook Pro and an Apple TimeCapsule, since upgrading to Lion last week, it is having stupidly slow throughput, i've had to cancel the backups as i don't have the hours in the day to let it complete.  this isn't a 3rd party device, it's a 1TB native Apple TimeCapsule.  Is anyone else seeing this speed issue?  It's making the Macbook run super hot too while it sits backing up so slowly.
    Since the update it now wants to backup 8GB which at this rate will take all week!
    Please tell me i'm not going mad
    Many thanks,
    Emma.

    The first backup after installing lion is going to take a while due to all of the new files and such. I also noticed that lion does a lot of file indexing after installation, both for spotlight AND time machine disks. When checking out processes, mdworker/mdworker32/mds (all indexing services from what I understand) were running for 1 or 2 days, but now the HDD activity (and time machine backups) are back to "normal".
    My advice is to leave your Mac on overnight for 1 or 2 nights so it can get caught up...

  • Time Machine Very Slow

    I hope somebody can help with this. I'm about out of ideas.
    The problem -- Time Machine is taking anywhere from 30 min to 1 hr or more to do an incremental backup. It takes so long that as soon as a backup ends, another begins.
    The source disk is my system disk. Macbook Pro circa 2007. OSX 10.6.8
    The destination is a 1.5T OtherWorld Computing external drive, partitioned into four parts, one reserved for Time Machine. Working fine in other ways.
    The backup always happens in two steps, always the same, the first is about 147,000 files, the second, about 84,000.
    The size of these files is tiny -- 147,000 files can equal as little 5 mb. That is essentially meaningless -- it would mean that each file is just a few bytes.
    And it takes a LONG time to back up these tiny files. Several SECONDS per kilobyte.
    I've done all the steps listed here
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/D2.html
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/A4.html
    I finally ran Disk Warrior and, low and behold, that seemed to solve the problem. But then I upgraded to 10.6.8 and things are now moving at a crawl again. I ran DW again, and formatted the destination partion and started over. No good. Same thing. Maybe worse.
    Help! Anybody have any ideas? I'm about ready to give up on TM. Would it be worth starting up in safe mode and running a backup from there as a test? I'll try anything at this point.
    Steve

    Hi, and welcome to the forums.
    That is quite slow, but as other posts say, might not indicate a problem.
    A couple of things you can do that might speed it up:
    Exclude your TM disk/partition from any anti-virus scanning.
    Also exclude it, at least temporarily, from Spotlight via System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.
    There might be a clue in your logs. download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget from: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. If you see something there that seems suspicious, copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).

  • Time Machine very slow when backup disk almost full

    My Time Machine backups on a Time Capsule (first generation, 1 TB) have become extremely slow recently. The disk is almost full, but I don't think that should be a problem as Time Machine deletes the oldest backups by itself. It has been, so I don't think that in itself should cause a problem.
    This becomes particularly annoying because whenever backups are going on, the system doesn't allow me to access the "Open" or "Save" dialogues - probably because it wants to check the Time Machine disk, but can't, or only can very slowly. Whenever I do this, the app in question just freezes.
    Anyone else has this problem, and does anyone know a fix? I don't want to start a new backup if I can avoid it.

    Florian M. wrote:
    Thank you. Did that, and it seems to be working now - though it actually seemed to have got better even before I ran Disk Utility. Before, even rebooting didn't help.
    Yes, if there's a problem inside he sparse bundle, rebooting (the Mac and/or TC) won't help.
    Time Machine is a great technology, but it seems to have strange quirks sometimes
    It does indeed!
    Once again, thank you.
    You're quite welcome, and thanks for the star!

  • Time Machine backup slow in copying phase

    I've had a gander through Pondini's (excellent!) site and other locations, but still can't seem to get TM to backup at a regular pace.
    I've got it connected via ethernet, but with about 500GB to backup and a copying speed that managed to do only 40GB in 14 hours, it's waaaaaay too slow.  Current message says "Backing up: 44.01 GB of 499.82 GB"
    I've done various things like removing Sophos for Mac, relaunching Finder, checking the Activity Monitor to see if there's anything hogging CPU, re-booted my My Book Live NAS and a few other things besides.  Nothing's helped.  Below is a copy/paste of details from EtreCheck.  Can anyone help?

    In case it's useful to someone who stumbles on this some time in future, I had another look at Pondini's site and found mention of TechTool Pro causing issues, of which  I'm running v7.
    I went into System Settings/TechToolProtection and Disabled protection features.  After a minute or so, I got a bump in speed, with TM now copying a GB every 4 - 5 minutes.  Still very slow, but something of an improvement.

  • Time machine backup slow

    A few days ago I upgraded to 10.7.5. Since then I am NOT ABLE to complete a time machine backup. Last run was 12 hours and only 20% of the changes were backed up. In addition suddenly spotlight started to reindex and this also takes forever. Plus an important utility "EOS Utility" for managing pictures coming from Canon EOS cameras don't work any more. As soon as I plug in a camera the application quits.
    All this was running fine before the last minor upgrade!
    What's happening?

    All this was running fine before the last minor upgrade!
    Yes it was. Now it's not:
    time machine slow in 10.7.5
    Time Machine backup very slow in Lion
    Summary: the upgrade broke Spotlight, which manifests itself in absurdly slow Time Machine performance.
    We just have to wait for Apple to fix it.
    Don't know if your Canon EOS utility is related or not. Probably not I would think.

  • Time Machine Getting Slower ... and sloowweerr ... and sllooowwe...?

    I’m having a few issues with Time Machine. I’ve noticed that backups seem to be getting progressively slower. Details are:
    System:  17” 1.25Ghz iMac – PowerPC – 10.5.8
    Data:  Around 140GB total data over two hard drives:
    1st Drive: Internal hard disk
    2nd Drive: Smartdisk CrossFire External Firewire 400 Hard Drive
    Time Machine Drive: LaCie d2 Quadra Firewire 400 Hard Drive
    Time Taken for Incremental backup:  Between 6 and 13 minutes, usually around 10 minutes.
    I’ve tried all the usual things – permissions repair on all drives, deleting the V100 spotlight file on the TM drive in order to rebuild the spotlight database, I’ve tried copying files directly to the TM dive to check the firewire connection and it’s lightening fast.
    A few days ago I even resorted to re-initializing my entire TM drive, zeroing it out and starting again completely.
    At first this improved things slightly. Before I started again, my backups were taking 20 minutes plus, but afterwards it went down to between 6 and 8 minutes, but now it’s slowly creeping up again.
    In terms of data, all I’m doing is checking emails and using the web and maybe the odd word processing. I haven’t done any heavy video editing for ages and don’t download music or movies so there aren’t massive amounts of data flying about. Backup sizes are often as low as1.5 megabytes.
    Before I started having these problems, I’m sure a standard incremental backup would take little more than one minute and often even less than that.
    So what can I do to fix this? The system really grinds when TM is backing up which is fine if it’s for one minute but a real pain if it’s spending 15 or 20 percent of the time churning though backups.
    Any help or advice gratefully received.

    Another backup report:
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/LC 5 Time Machine/Backups.backupdb
    No pre-backup thinning needed: 151.7 MB requested (including padding), 77.57 GB available
    Copied 5 files (0 bytes) from volume CrossFire 2 Movies Photos.
    Copied 6016 files (17.3 MB) from volume Macintosh HD.
    No pre-backup thinning needed: 137.2 MB requested (including padding), 77.54 GB available
    Copied 5 files (0 bytes) from volume CrossFire 2 Movies Photos.
    Copied 6016 files (4.8 MB) from volume Macintosh HD.
    Starting post-backup thinning
    No post-back up thinning needed: no expired backups exist
    Backup completed successfully.
    No problems reported, yet it took 21 minutes to complete!
    Something's wrong, surely.
    Stuff I've tried:
    Repair/verify permissions on all drives;
    Safe Boot;
    Clear out caches and tidy up using Onyx;
    Run Daily, Weekly and Monthly scripts;
    Erase TM partition, zero out completely and start again;
    Force spotlight database rebuilds on all drives;
    Delete com.apple.TimeMachine.plist from top level Library/preferences folder;
    Tell TM to ignore .dropbox file;
    Copied a 1gb file to the TM drive manually to check FireWire 400 data transfer. It took around one minute 20 seconds which seems ok to me;
    Told my antivirus VirusBarrier X6 (which I've been using without issues for years) to ignore the TM drive.
    I'm at a loss. Something must be wrong, but I'm completely out of ammo.

  • Time machine running slow

    Not sure why my wireless setting are set up high connections.What happens if I put something into the wan port?

    Ok, so I have had another play this morning.  I have plugged the Mac into the router connecting at 100Mbps.  I then added a file around 4GB to the Mac.  I first transferred this to the WD drive which transferred at 95Mbps average continuously until the file was transferred.  This tells me there is not issue with my network and equipment.
    Secondly I started a time machine backup and it picked up this file as needing backing up.  The transfer started quite quickly which was good compared to yesterday.  It was a little choppy on the through put but was reaching peaks of 95Mbps. Great.  I am just putting the choppy down to time machine copying and sorting or something of that sort.
    Oh dear.  1GB transfered and the backup suddenly goes slow again without warning again.  Then later on, a lot later, it speeds up again.  I am seriously looking at my router as the problem here but require to swap it out to test it.  It just seems so strange that it is up and down like this.  Oh, and right now (while writing this) it is back at 72Kbps peak.  This makes no sense that Time Machine itself would keep changing the transfer rates so dramatically.
    Regards,
    Adam.
