Time Machine/Time Capsule issues

I have had a never ending series of Time Machine/Time Capsule issues. There's little to configure, so there's not much I could be doing wrong.
One thing I have especially noticed, is that Time Machine is interfering with iTunes. iTunes has frozen for a time or locked up when Time Machine is backing up.
Another problem I have seen is the console log flooded with some sort of waiting for index error. Yet another are messages like -
"Jul 14 14:43:56 MJBook /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[176]: StatusMonitor::volumesChangedCallBack returned -47"
The only thing I have ever found odd about my situation is that I am running a Time Machine and three other Airport Express devices. One of the Airport Express units uses WDS, and I heard that could create issues.
Any ideas?

I have the same question and I see you posted yours in March. So this forum is REALLY helpful...
My Mac consultant doesn't use either so is not much help. He says to erase T.C. and start over, but it also contains all my backups for my other Mac which have worked perfectly. When I select T.C. in T.M. the only option is to Remove Disk; I want to save the MacBook backups. I also tried wireless as he suggested but got the same warnings as above so went back to Ethernet. Plus nobody can tell me how to access T.C. in Disk Utility to try to fix it.

    Reboot the TC.
If you normally have multiple computers backing up, under Lion there seems to be some issues.. you need to force other users off the system. You can do that through the Airport utility, manual setup, disks, disconnect all users. Note carefully if you use Lion you probably need to download the real airport utility.. 5.6 to accomplish anything useful.

  • How to safely remove all backups from Time Machine/Time Capsule?

I plan to 'clean up' my Time Machine/Time capsule completely, whereby I want to make it impossible for third parties to recover all or part of these old backups.
After I have accompished this I want to start from scratch backing up my Mac.
Can you please let me have a step by step procedure to accomplish my goal.
    Thank you in advance!

    1) I am now specifically looking for info regarding deleting emails from backups.
It is my impression so far, that this is not possible?
Delete all backups of <home folder>/Library/Mail, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #12.
And exclude that folder from future backups, per FAQ #10.
    2) In addition I feel that being somewhat better in control of TM that it would be an advantage to really clean out TH completely and start a new back up, thereby systematically blooking certain matters from backing-up since there is no need for doing so.
How would I best accomplish this?
If the emails are all you're worried about, the procedure above will be fine.
But if you want to erase the TC's internal HD, see #Q5 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.

  • Time Machine back up issue

    Heya Guys!
Not sure this is in the right place so please move it if needed.
Ok, so I have an external hard drive, and I am trying to back up my mac through Time Machine. My issue is that it gets to a certain point where it will say 'The backup was not performed because an error ocurred while copying files to the backup disc. The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk'.
I repair the disc, and I thought I'd figured it out it, but now every single time it tells me to repair the disc. I have bought a brand new hard drive to do this with and it had the same thing.
Also it will get to saying that it has only 148 mb to go, will do it really quick then will go on to back up more data that wasn't there before in the bar, and then will say as above about disc repair.
I have no idea if it is actually backing up, as when I look into my hard drive, the .(file format) is .inprogress and the time machine sign always ends up saying back up failed.
I haven't a clue how to resolve this, so any help would be wonderful. Even if someone could just reassure me that yes it has backed up properly, that would be brilliant.
The hard drive I am using for this is a Seagate GoFlex 500GB and I did buy a Seagate External 1TB that I partitioned so I could use it on a Mac to use it with originally, but reverted back to my GoFlex.
    Thanks,
    Simon

I've just run Carbon Copy Cloner to back it up too and that has revealed where the problems are. Most of these I already have on my External Hard Drive safe but not the others, and since it is my first ever back up I don't want to delete something off my Hard Drive that I can't get back on it somehow. The problem areas are below:
    ATIRadeonX2000GLDriver (located in system/library/extensions/atiradeonx2000gldriver.bundle/contents/macos)
Media Toolbox (located in system/library/privateframeworks/avfoundationcf.framework/support/mediatoolbox/ framework/versions/A/mediatoolbox)
    Core AUC (located in system/library/privateframeworks/coreauc.framework/versions/A/coreauc)
I was also told that one of my files needs to be repaired as it failed to open, but I have no idea how to do it. It is located here: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner
I'm guessing these are what is causing my issues, but I'm not exactly computer savvy when it comes to these sorts of things, so I don't know whether deleting them is a good idea, especially when I'm not sure if they are on a disc somewhere or not.
Thanks for the help so far guys! :-)

  • What is the best way to store my photos off my mac without using time machine, time capsule?

I heard alot of negative reviews about time machine / time capsule.

Time Machine is about the only way to create a full system backup with a Mac.
Nope, bootable clones is another option and vastly superior actually to TimeMachines basic backup only and undelete ability.
A clone is just that, a exact copy of OS X, bootable, accessible and everything just like the orignal.
Make as many as you need, clone everything in OS X to a larger drive too.

  • Time machine back up issue continues with Mavericks

I keep getting the errors "Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “Time Machine”. "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder." anytime Time Machine tries to backup after it goes into Energy Saver mode. I have had this issue since Lion and hoped either Mountian Lion of Mavericks would correct this issue.
I am using a USB 2.0 external HD attached directly to my Mac Mini via USB 3.0. If I restrt my Mac, Time Machine has no issues as long as it doesn't go to Sleep. If it tries to backup after sleep, I get the message.
    Any ideas?

    Bueller? Anyone have any suggestions?

  • A Macbook/Time Machine/Time Capsule epic - still in progress. Please help!

I'll try and keep this to the point.
I decided to upgrade my Macbook's 160GB Hitachi hard drive to a 500GB Samsung model. I also have a 500GB Time Capsule that has has an ongoing Time Machine backup going back to June 13, 2008.
I figured that I would change out the HD, then use the 'restore' function in Time Machine to bring the system back to where I left it. I figured that's exactly why I purchased Time Capsule in the first place.
The drive installed and formatted (using 'zero fill' to check for drive errors) just fine, and the restore kicked off great. The estimation was for something like 28 hours (for 49GB of data) which was a bit alarming but apparently not unheard of.
A day later, I found it stuck at 71% or so, and checking the install log revealed that I was getting 'error -36' messages for several music and video tracks in iTunes. It literally got stuck for about 8 hours, taking about half an hour to realize that each song was going to be an 'error -36' before moving on to the next one, and so on.
It was clearly never going to finish, at least not this year.
I clicked on stop, clicked to confirm that I was sure...and then it hung. I tried quitting the installer, which also hung, so in the end I was forced to do a hard power down. When I rebooted using the Leopard DVD, I attempted another restore, thinking I'd choose another date from which to restore. This time, however, opening up the Time Capsule drive hung.
OK, Time Capsule's Time Machine backup file is now toast. End of story.
Here's my question: I figure my next step is to figure out whether the HD in Time Capsule is faulty or whether the backup file itself is corrupt. I'm now 'zero fill' erasing the TC's HD. Does this give you a surefire way to tell that the drive is in good condition? If it fails, I guess it's under warranty. If not, I'll start a new backup from scratch (I don't see what else there is to do at this stage, frankly) and try to restore that and see how that goes.
Does anyone know what an 'error -36' is, anyway? Can anyone tell me if I've missed something, or some reason why this may not have worked as well as it was supposed to? Or anything that I should do next that I may not have thought of?
    Thanks so much,
    Michael.

I will remember to try to repair the TC disk via Disk Utility next time - I didn't even know you could do that until now! Thanks for that. In that case, I agree that I wiped the drive, because it would have been a great opportunity to try out the repair function and see if it could have made it work.
Well, the good news is that I have succeeded with my original intention, which was to replace my internal HD with a larger one, using Time Machine/Time Capsule to bring everything back. It worked perfectly, and I now have a Macbook with a 500GB drive. Awesome! By the way, I can recommend the Samsung drive if anyone is thinking of making the switch. So far, excellent performance, near-silent operation, and loads of storage space - for now!
The solution to the problem became clear once I erased the TC's HD and wanted to start over. My idea was that I would make a complete Time Machine backup, then change out the drive, then restore.
After the erasure, I found that the backup would not start, and everything about the Mac was sluggish! I cycled the power on the Time Capsule, and everything was like new once again. I restarted the backup and without delay, it started backing up - and fast.
Once this completed, I did a restore, and the estimated time was 8 hours. Big improvement from 24! After just 80 mins, it had restored 25% of the system - and this is wirelessly (using 'N')! Clearly, everything had become jammed up and during my previous restore attempt, it pretty much ground to a halt.
So everything is great now. It is possible that I didn't even have file corruption after all, perhaps just a refusal by the system to go any further. I won't know now, but should it happen again, I will power cycle first as well as run repairs on the disk via Disk Utility. I suspect that this is all that was needed.
Thanks for the responses again, and hopefully this post may help someone in the future.

  • Time Machine Time Capsule Backup Issues

When I attempt to have Time Machine do a backup to a Time Capsule, the following message is received:
Does anyone, please, know how to interpret this? And, what steps to take to get it to work again?

  • Time Machine, Time Capsule, Keychain! I am totally lost!

    Hi,
I desperately need some help here! I had my Time Machine setup correctly for a while and have been doing manual backups to Time Capsule without any issues until recently, my backup failed!
The first error I get from Time Machine is:
    ===
    Time Machine Error
The network backup volume could not be mounted because there was a problem with the network username or password.
Open system preferences and choose time machine then re-select the Time Machine backup destination to enter the correct username and password.
    ===
I went to the preferences and selected change disk and re-selected my TC. I was prompted for a password and I entered the correct one. Now I get another error:
    ===
Keychain error -25299 occurred while created a system keycahin entry for the username "*" and URL "afp://**@***.local/**"
You can try using the keychain Access Utility to edit or repair your system keychain.
    ===
After searching the forums, here is what I did so far without any different outcome:
1- Did keychain first aid scan and repair (tested - same errors)
2- double checked all password files related to TC in system and login (tested - same errors)
3- Deleted all password entries related to TC & Network drive from Key Chain to recreate them automatically again (tested - same errors)
4- Reconfigured Airport and TC and changed device pass to disk pass (tested - same errors)
I should also mention that the TC mounts as a disk through the finder without any problems. Only when it is mounted in the finder TM is able to pick it up and display the blue disk icon, but still same errors and backup fails.
    What do I do now?
Will I loose all my previous TM data?
Can I get TM to work again and continue where the last TM backup left off? Or do I need to backup my machine completely again?
It doesn't make any sense that an error like this could happen so easily! It kills the purpose of TM!
Any help would be appreciated ...

Thanks Bob & tomvs for your quick replies. I tried both solutions but no change. I also tried changing the TC name so new password items will be created in the keychain, no change.
If I dont get any new suggestions or solutions, I might as well try resetting my keychain! but I dont know if I will lose my passwords and security notes if I do! But I think it leaves a copy of it somewhere, right?
by the way, after I changed the TC name, all password entries were successfully created in KC, or thats at least what it seams to me.
    any ideas?

  • Time Machine/Time Capsule backups successful, but take a long time

I purchased a 512GB Time Capsule about a year ago. Since I got it, backups have been successful, but very slow. An average backup takes about 40-50 minutes, usually for less than 20 MB transferred.
Here are a couple summaries of recent backups (see end of post for full logs):
    BACKUP 1:
11 minutes to detect if pre-backup thinning was necessary
18 minutes to copy 281 MB
5 minutes to copy 5.4 MB
4 minutes to start post-backup thinning
2 minutes to delete 1 expired backup
    There were no error messages.
    BACKUP 2:
4 minutes to detect if pre-backup thinning was necessary
12 minutes to copy 15 MB
5 minutes to detect if pre-backup thinning was necessary
15 minutes to copy 3.8 MB
1 minutes to start post-backup thinning
2 minutes to delete 1 expired backup
This time, there were error messages about "Unable to rebuild path cache for source item. Partial source path:"
My Time Capsule is placed about 5 feet from my laptop, with no obstructions between them. I don't think it's a wireless speed issue, because I use the Time Capsule as my router, and my connection to the net is fine. Also, operations that don't require wireless connections, like detecting pre-backup thinning, also take a long time.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong to cause my regular backups to take so long?

I checked all of the steps in #D2 of the Troubleshooting Guide.
One other thing thing you might try, is a +*Verify Disk+* (not permissions) on your internal HD. That will not take anything like 40 hours! If it reports problems, you'll have to boot from your Install disc and use it's copy of DU to repair it. Post back if you need to do this but aren't sure how.
I think it's very fishy that Repair Disk took 40 hours -- it seems like any operation that touches the hard drive on the Time Capsule takes a long time. Maybe the hard drive is having problems? What sort of problems could a drive have that would make everything VERY slow, but still successful?
Try connecting via an Ethernet cable; see what effect that has. Everything should be faster, of course, but not wildly. Just as an example, I'm doing backups to a USB hard drive via my Airport Extreme, about 15 feet from my iMac. When I first started that way, I did a full backup via Ethernet (about 21 gb/hour), then erased it and ran again wirelessly (about 12 gb/hour).
Even 5 feet apart, you may have some sort of interference or other communications problem; if Ethernet is many times faster, then you may need to have your TC and/or wireless card examined.

  • Time Machine + Time Capsule problems

    Hi,
I'm having this issue for a coiuple of years now. Recently updated from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and thought to give it another try. Same outcome.
Back then I even brought it to the Genius guys and the time machine worked fine.
I created everything from scratch. Set up File sharing in Airport Utility with new name, etc.
When I select the new backup disk (my Time Capsule with different name - no facny characters, etc.), Time Machine spends some time first "preparing backup", then I see a volume created (disk image), called Time Machine Backups, and then Time Machine displays: Looking for disk (or similar).
That goes on for a while and then I get the error message:
"Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “Time Capsule”
The backup disk image “/Volumes/TomsTimeCapsule/Intel Mac mini.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1)."
And the Time Machine Backups disk image is still sitting on my desktop, doesn't unmount.
In the meantime I do see a sparsebundle file has been created and it is with every try exactly 872.5MB large.
    here is the log:

  • Migration to new 3TB Time Machine/Time Capsule?

From an earlier posting, I think A Silverstone asked for a step-by-step procedure.
I have a similar issue I would like a procedure(s) on.  Actually two identical issues.
    1. I wish to purchase Apples new 3TB tower Airport/Time Machine to replace a 1TB Airport extreme/Time Machine.  I want to migrate the old to the new using Apple processes/procedures without a lot of workaround.  How can this be done?  Does Apple have a procedure?
    2. I have a desktop with four drives (three 2TB & one 1TB) and wish at least two of them to be Time Machine capable, i.e., backup every hour like the Airport/Time Machine does.  Can this be done?  Does Apple have a procedure?
I want to migrate the old Time Capsule data to the new Time Capsule and to two HD's in the desktop.
The idea is to have backups for a Time Machine backup in the event of a power disruption or a hacker that might impact the tower Time Machine.  There are other reasons such as storage capacity using a daisy chain process.
One main problem is capturing the old "sparsebundle" in such a way to get it into the new unit and on to internal HD's.  How to do this is the question.

    1. Time Machine – Transfer Backup to a New Drive
Time Machine – Transfer Backup to a New Drive (2)
You can also use Disk Utility's Restore tab, which is often faster and less prone to errors. Note it will format the new drive.
    2. Yes. Go to System Preferences/Time Machine, select Add a drive and you can have 2. They will alternate with each new backup.

  • Time Machine/Time Capsule Awful Performance?

I am not sure that anyone can help here so maybe its just an experience reported.  I would be interested to know if this is common and if there are any fixes.
I had a drive report problems in Disk Utility - its a 1Tb hard drive in a MacBook Pro that's 80%+ full.  Disk Utility said save all and then reformat the disk as it could not fix it.  Having decided that I could not afford to lose any of the data I bought a new Time Capsule despite already having one of the older ones which had a Time Machine backup of the MacBook Pro already on it.  I do not trust things and did not want to reformat the drive only to find that the Time Machine backup was not going to work.  So I backed it up again on the new Time Capsule so that I had two copies on two Time Capsules to avoid as many issues as possible.
Firstly, the new backup took three days.  I cannot fathom why a fast PC on a Gigabit Ethernet wired connection is so incredibly slow copying files.  There was four feet of Ethernet cable betwen the Mac and the Time Capsule.  I was watching the connection and it was around 300Kb/second which is ludicrous.  I have seen plently of folks complaining about this and I can see why.  However, having waited three days for the back up I finally erased the drive that Disk Utility was complaing about. Then the fun starts...
Having used the Disk Utility to erase the drive, I selected the Restore option in the disk utlity - and yes, this was obviously wrong - and selected the Time Machine backup that was showing in the right hand selection menu.  It said drag the names into the form and I did.  Of course I did not realise that this restore was useless.  And there was no way of knowing as all the messages told me just that it was copying files - I had no idea which files because it did not say and if it did I would have caught my mistake pretty fast.  Instead, I waited for a stupidly long three days for it to copy the files back only to find that they were all sparsebundle files and completely useless.  The Disk Utility was unhelpful and did not say that restoring directly from Time Capsule was a stupid thing to do.  So three days wasted.  Apple - put some useful help in there so that this is avoided and show the files that a are being copied so that errors can be caught in less than three days.
Next erase the disk again with Disk Utility and go into Time Machine to get the files back.  This time it looked as though it was copying the files back but again it was incredibly massively SLOW.  As low as 200Kb/second which is farcical.  Again, no indication of which files it is copying back.  Wait days - it originally said 24 days!! But then two thirds of the way through it pops a message that says it cannot copy a file because I do not own it.  No idea which file as it did not say.  No idea why I would not own a file in my own User directory either when I am admin.  No option except to click OK.  Did that.  New message - there is an error with some really helpful message number and again only an OK button (and I thought Microsoft error messages were cryptic and poor!).  Click that and the whole thing craps out!!!  Gone!  Then I discover that a Time Capsule recovery cannot start from where it left off and also that the User directory it was recovering is greyed out in the Finder and you cannot click on it. OK - then maybe the Time Machine recovery can overwrite the files it thinks it had already copied...  No such luck.  After starting the recovery again and waiting ages for it to count all the files, it then says there isn't enough space to recover to. I am about to throw it all out of the window.  Now I have to start all over again having trashed the whole directory it had got two thirds of the way through recovering.
So I still do not have any of my files back.  This is way less than impressive.  So I figure I will try and recover one of the main folders as I have no way of knowing that it won't come across whichever file stopped it last time and that this file will stop it again.  The folder in question is 14.7Gb and the copy process is stating that it will take four hours.  The transfer is at 202Kb/Second.  I could do it way faster with a memory stick.  And right now it still has not finished copying the files... And I am pretty mad by now too.  This has lost me so much time.
I do not know what other's experience of using Time Machine and Time Capsule is but mine is defintely less than stellar.  In fact I worked on systems 20 years ago that were better than this and faster than this and way less frustrating with better messages telling you what is going on.  I have no idea how anyone puts up with it and no idea how Apple can think this is any good at all.  The fact that one file that it cannot read for whatever reason (on a brand new Time Capsule) stops you from retrieving ANY files from the backup and then craps out is frankly ludicrous.  I can only assume that I will have to retrieve each folder independently until I find the one that has the file in it that it does not like - I cannot think of any other way of doing it unless someone out there knows better.
In future maybe I will just add a USB hard drive to the Mac Pro and simply copy all the files to it as a backup......  I will update this with any other experiences assuming I get my data back.
Time Machine and Time Capsule:  User friendly - No; Ridiculously slow to almost be unusable: - Yes.  Come on Apple (if you ever read these messages) - get your act together for professional and business users.  A 1970s mainframe with magnetic tapes would have done better than this.  I know that because I worked on them and having been the CTO of three public software companies I can safely say that something this awful would never have got out of my door.....
Any tips to improve the situation welcome.

It would be helpful to the rest of us and any future searches if you would tell us how the issue was solved. Please let us know.

  • Time Machine Disk duplication issue...is this normal?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. The image below is what I get when I pick the "Select disk" button in the Time Machine system preference window. It shows my time capsule disk is selected for the backup disk, but then underneath it is the same disk listed as an available disk. I only have one time capsule that I use for the time machine backup. Is this duplicate disk listing normal or is there an issue I need to look at? Do I need to somehow delete one of them by removing the backup disk and then selecting the duplicate available disk to be my backup disk or should I just ignore it?
    Thanks again.

This is normal. The second section just lists all available disks, including ones you already use.

  • ANTIVIRUS and TIME MACHINE / Time Capsule

Have had problems with 3 antivirus programs with Time Machine and Time Capsule.
Have tried Sophos, Norton 11, and Intego antivirus. All 3 have slowed down backups, and in two cases (Sophos and Intego) have messed up things royally after a while (initially good performance tho). After removing all traces of the antivirus, things are back to normal. Norton REALLY slowed down my system generally. Sophos was fast overall but messed up the backups.
So..... despite claims we don't need antivirus software on the Mac, I still want some but have not found the ideal one yet. Others have reported problems with Time Machine as well.
By the way... for those seeing the PREPARING BACKUP message... leave it be. I noticed that my Time Capsule light was flashing green during this time, indicating it's doing something with the disk. Be patient in other words.

I've been dealing with Apple Tech Support for weeks now on this same issue, backups would fail, I would have to Repair my sparsesbundle, etc. Anyway I was a strong advocate until a few minutes ago when "Joe", a supposed "Product Specialist" for Time Capsule at Apple told me that Apple is aware of this problem that TC and Antivirus software don't work on the same Mac and that I'd have to remove my Antivirus software, erase my TC and use TC without any Antivirus software. He said he read my case notes, he'd seen this very often and did not need any further information from me about this, he was guaranteed that this was the issue. I asked him if he wanted my latest log files to just review since his deity-like disposition was about to render my $600 TC purchase moot, as my employer states that I have to run some kind of Antivirus software (if Mac's don't need them why do they sell it???). He was an arrogant jerk, quite honestly. Sure I didn't like his response, because he had already passed judgement and refused to pursue any further sources of debugging on my case. And he sure didn't speak to Apple taking back this $600 Time Capsule either.
