Time Machine, Time Capsule, Keychain! I am totally lost!

Hi,
I desperately need some help here! I had my Time Machine setup correctly for a while and have been doing manual backups to Time Capsule without any issues until recently, my backup failed!
The first error I get from Time Machine is:
===
Time Machine Error
The network backup volume could not be mounted because there was a problem with the network username or password.
Open system preferences and choose time machine then re-select the Time Machine backup destination to enter the correct username and password.
===
I went to the preferences and selected change disk and re-selected my TC. I was prompted for a password and I entered the correct one. Now I get another error:
===
Keychain error -25299 occurred while created a system keycahin entry for the username "*" and URL "afp://**@***.local/**"
You can try using the keychain Access Utility to edit or repair your system keychain.
===
After searching the forums, here is what I did so far without any different outcome:
1- Did keychain first aid scan and repair (tested - same errors)
2- double checked all password files related to TC in system and login (tested - same errors)
3- Deleted all password entries related to TC & Network drive from Key Chain to recreate them automatically again (tested - same errors)
4- Reconfigured Airport and TC and changed device pass to disk pass (tested - same errors)
I should also mention that the TC mounts as a disk through the finder without any problems. Only when it is mounted in the finder TM is able to pick it up and display the blue disk icon, but still same errors and backup fails.
What do I do now?
Will I loose all my previous TM data?
Can I get TM to work again and continue where the last TM backup left off? Or do I need to backup my machine completely again?
It doesn't make any sense that an error like this could happen so easily! It kills the purpose of TM!
Any help would be appreciated ...

Thanks Bob & tomvs for your quick replies. I tried both solutions but no change. I also tried changing the TC name so new password items will be created in the keychain, no change.
If I dont get any new suggestions or solutions, I might as well try resetting my keychain! but I dont know if I will lose my passwords and security notes if I do! But I think it leaves a copy of it somewhere, right?
by the way, after I changed the TC name, all password entries were successfully created in KC, or thats at least what it seams to me.
any ideas?

  • After installing Lion, Time Capsule backed-up my mac, but unfortunately it deleted all my old beck up!! I think it's terrible, what was the point than to have time capsule??now I lost all my back up with no warning....

Be crafull with updating to Lion.
I lost all my backup and my mac got realy slow...
Any suggestion if it is possible after all to recover my old back up from the time capsule?  I guess it lost though.

Mount and open the internal disk of the Time Capsule.  How many "sparsebundle" files do you see?  If you only have one Mac using Time Machine but you see two such files, then one of them has your old data.  In this case you may have missed a chance to continue using the old Time Machine file.
By the way, you've been misled by poor field labeling on this forum into typing a large part of your message into the field intended for the subject.  In the future just type a short summary of your post into that field and type the whole message into the field below that.

If you are syncing using iCloud, try going to System Preferences/iCloud (computers) and checking Safari. If it is checked, try deselecting it, wait 10-15 seconds, and then check it again.

  • Receiving time capsule Keychain error -25293

3TB Airport Time Capsule, iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.  Performed factory reset, reset passwords, repaired keychain - nothing has worked.  Has anyone else encountered and/or have a fix?

    Mavericks as always..
When you factory reset the TC, did you use all short names.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric for everything.. TC name and wireless name/s. This is important. Do not change the TC password from default, ie public.. if you need to type in a new password keep the old password.. ie public.
Delete the current Time Machine setup and start over.
    See A4 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Manually mount the TC.. in Finder use Go>Connect to server..
    type in
    AFP://TCname.local
And when requested for the password type that in.
If it still gives you a password error then I am not sure where to proceed next.. but my inclination would be a clean install of the OS.

  • Time Capsule Keychain problem

Hi Recently got the new Time Capsule but having trouble backing up, keep getting the message: Keychain error -25299 occurred while creating a System Keychain entry for the username “Mark” and URL “afp://[email protected]/Data”.
    Any ideas what's wrong?

Hi and welcome to the discussions!
Try resetting your password for the Time Capsule as follows. You can keep the same password if you wish.
Open AirPort Utility. To find it go Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on Manual Setup at the lower left side of the first window. On the next window, there are some icons at the top of the pane. Just below that there is a line that reads Summary - Time Capsule - Wireless - Access. Click on Time Capsule.
Backspace to delete your password, then reenter it and repeat to confirm. Make sure there is a check in the box that reads Remember This Password in My Keychain. Click Update at the lower right of the pane and your TC will restart with the new settings.
    See if that helps.

  • Time Capsule can't be found - Lost Data??

Out of the blue, Time Capsule lost connection with my Mac, and I cannot connect to it. I shut it down, restarted, but AirPort Utility cannot see it no matter how many time I scan.
I just noticed this, but I thought something was missing from my sidebar... went to print today from my printer connected, and that's when I realized I've been using a neighbors wi-fi connection for internet.
Does this mean I lost my Time Machine backup? I'm really not happy with Apple right now.
    Please help!
    Bryan

You likely did not lose your Time Machine backup, but you don't really know when back ups stopped. Likely your iMac lost the TC wireless connection only. Just a matter of correcting your network setup. Or just connect via ethernet to access TC via AirPort Utility.

  • Time Capsule: backup failed old backups lost

I'm having serious problems with my Time Capsule.
It is the newest Time Capsule 2TB connected to my new iMac and new installed MacOSLion.
This update already gives me problems with Wi-fi and now my Time Capsule is not working properly either.
I just left my iMac on for 3 days so it could make a backup.. after two days back-uping very slowly the message : back-up delayed appears, followed by the message : back-up failed. Al my previous back-ups made with my Time-Capsule are completly gone and I cannot back-up anything.
Had the problem several times, turning the TC on and of, reset it, reset Airport settings etc does NOT help. I'm having this problem for 2 months now.
Called Apple-Support about my Wi-fi problems, but 1,5 hour later and €30 poor they did not solve my problem. So, I lost faith in the Apple Support.
Any other suggestions for recovering previous back-ups and solving my constant and slow back-up failure problem?
    Thanks in advance!

    What does this mean
It means Time Machine is confused, and does not know what it is doing.
    how do I fix it?
Try power off the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Then power the Time Capsule back on
Wait a few minutes and try a backup

  • Can I restore a single photo/photo folder from Time Machine/Time Capsule

    Hi
So I'm usuing Time Machine to back up my MacBook to Airport Time Capsule.
If I somehow lost a couple of photos and its taken a few months to realise, can I retrieve just these photos/photo folder or do I need to restore my whole photo library going back to a past date - and then how can I be sure which date to restore back to - is there anyway of actually viewing the photos for a certain date before restoring?
And if the only way is to restore the whole library, what happens to any new photos that were added to the library between present day and the date I would be restoring back too?
Would it be better to move my photos from the app Iphoto to a documents folder for future use?  This is assuming that in a documents folder you can view and just retrieve a single document...  Havent tried it yet but that was my understanding...
    Hope this makes sense
    Many thanks in advance

Learn from Pondini, who knew more about Time Machine than anyone.

See the green box for links for iPhoto instructions according to the version that you might have.
Would it be better to move my photos from the app Iphoto to a documents folder for future use?
No. Even if you did this, you would not be able to retrieve individual photos since iPhoto is a special type of package file.

  • Time capsule erased my old backups?

    I have two macbook airs.
On MBA1 I restored Lion from Mountain Lion, by going back before I installed the beta for Mountain Lion, and restoring.
Then, on MBA2 I deleted a bootcamp partition.
I then backed up both machines to Time Capsule.
All data is lost before the the new backups.
So all that meticulous, responsible backing up I've done is useless if I do a minor reconfig on my system and do another backup.
This is so laughably, abymsmally dysfunctional, I can't even have an emotional reaction to it. I am in a numb state of shock.
What happened? And why weren't there about a billion warnings, red flags, alarms and barking dogs telling be this was going to happen.
How can you possibly build a system that casually allows this to happen?

Apparently you didn't notice -- this is a user-to-user forum;  you're not talking to Apple here.
If you want to rant at Apple, go to an Apple Store, or call AppleCare, or file feedback here:  http://www.apple.com/feedback/timemachine.html
Obviously, this is completely unacceptable. I am immediately terminating my use of Time Capsule. It simply doesn't work.
I'm sure Apple will be crushed.  However, Time Machine, like other apps, does work just fine for most folks, most of the time.
if anyone can recommend a 100% reliable, deterministic backup system, be happy to hear about it.
There is no such thing.   I've been programming computers for over 50 years, and have yet to find a perfect app (even the ones I wrote ) or hardware, any more than I've found a perfect automobile, calculator, etc.
At least some of the backups are probably still there;  if you want help, and can drop the attitude, let us know.

  • Time Capsule and my iMac

So I have a ton of Photos and Videos that I want to delete off my IMac's Internal Memory.  Correct me if I'm wrong, Time Capsule will not store my memory to have access to my files many years down the road.  If the Time Capsule fails, the files are lost. Do I need an external hard drive? And if so, what brand do you suggest?

    Gregoryfromga wrote:
Thanks a ton. I'm now running Time cabsule along with my External Hard Drive. Now I want to completly delete most of my files off of my IMac for space and also securty.  I have stored my files onto my external hard drive, and I'm ready to delete them off the IMac.
First, I'd make sure they're backed-up on your TC.  No sense losing anything now.
Also, if you moved iPhoto, iTunes, or iMovie stuff, make sure you can access the copied versions properly.
    If in doubt, see:
    Moving your iTunes Music folder
    Moving your iPhoto '11 Library
Moving iMovie '11 footage to another drive
But yes, just delete and empty the trash.  If you have a lot of stuff (more the number of files than the size), that may take a while.   (If you do a secure delete, then the larger the size, the longer it will take.)
Also, since I stored my files onto my Extranal Hard Drive, will they be completly safe years down the road?
There is no such thing as "completely safe."     That's why you want to be sure they're backed-up on your Time Capsule.
You might also want to consider getting yet another external HD, and making "secondary" backups.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for some suggestions.

  • Time capsule not working properly

I am having great difficulty setting up a new time capsule! Eventually I managed to get it backing up over 24 hours all my stuff but at the end it said finishing backup and went on saying this for 4 hours without any finish. Now after managing to stop it, I'm not sure how, I am trying to start it backing up again but it says preparing to back up and just gets no further. Have I got a duff machine or is there something else I should be doing?

Walter Mossberg recommended the Time Capsule in his Wall Street Journal column a couple of weeks ago. I installed a 1TB Time Capsule for my MacBook Pro. I was hoping that I could partition the disk, keep 250 GB for the Time Machine backup and throw out my old router. (The partition was so that Time Machine wouldn't eat up all of the space on the Capsule.)
It seemed to install okay, and was recognized properly. It automatically assumed the name and saved the password of my existing network - very impressive. I pegged it as my Time Machine volume, and moved some files over. Life was going to get easy.
    But then again...
    1) Apparently you cannot partition the Time Capsule disk
    2) It completely lost its wireless capability within 48 hours.
The status light was showing green, but the Airport Utility would be "unable to find any Apple wireless device." I reset the machine - no dice. It is now a worthless, large, square paper weight with an Apple logo.
So I am back to my old router and an old external hard drive.
Has any one else had this problem?
The answer is yes - many have had this issue if you look at the discussions.
I cannot recommend buying these Time Capsules at all, given the similarity of our problems.
Let's see if I can get my money back.

  • Disk space is full and I need to move and back up some movies to clear up space--suggestions?  I have a time capsule, but am afraid that if I delete the files from my laptop, they will subsequently be deleted from the time capsule.

I also don't want to have a single copy of the movies.  Is buying an external hard drive for my movie files the only option?  Can I then use the time capsule to back-up the G Drive?
    Trish

You can't depend on a Time Machine backup keeping copies of files that you've deleted from your Mac.  For one thing, those would be the only place those files were kept.  If the disk in the Time Capsule fails, you'd have lost them entirely.  For another thing, Time Machine will eventually delete those files.  See item 20 of Time Machine FAQs.
A locally-connected external disk would be the best place to move those movies.

  • Photos dropped from Mac & Time Capsule

My problem started last week when iPhoto dropped all photos (about 6500) saved since 2006 (when i got my Mac).  iPhoto now only shows photos saved prior to 2006 from files that were not in iPhoto previously (?).
When I try to have Time Capsule restore photos from the lost dates (2006-2011), I get a blank Time Capsule page showing "downloading photos" but after hours of waiting, no photos appear, nor are there any file names in left column.
Problem probably started while I was trying to set up a new program - maybe Mobile Me or iDisk.
I'm quite sure lost photos have not been deleted, but that I somehow locked them out.
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Re: Time Capsule - iPhoto

Can you see the old photos in the backups?  (If you're not sure how, see the pink box in #15 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.)  If so, try restoring a few that way;   if that works, try restoring whole groups.
If that doesn't help, try repairing your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If still no help, there are a couple of long shots in #E9 of that same link.

  • Time Capsule setup

I admit I'm not the most hard computer-savvy guy, so bear with my ignorance here.
I bought a Time Capsule to use as backup for a couple of Macs, and I'm fine with using it to set up a wireless network, but I have a perfectly good router and don't really need it to serve that purpose. I thought I'd try setting it up that way just to have one less thing on my desk.
But here's the thing. The guy at the Apple Store told me to do my first backup with an ethernet cable because of how long it would take to do it wirelessly. So I plugged in the cable and plugged in my Time Capsule. But then I lost my internet connection through my router. The only way to get a connection is to unplug the ethernet cable, but when I do that, the computer no longer recognizes the Time Machine.
It's a vicious circle, and I have no idea what I'm doing.

So, I tried connecting the Time Capsule to my router, and it went through setup and said it had to restart. Once it did, I got a message saying "AirPort Utility was unable to find any AirPort wireless devices. Make sure the AirPort wireless device you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, then click rescan to try again."
    Rescanning never finds anything.
    This is amazingly frustrating.

  • Time Capsule not working over distance

    Hi,
Can someone help me. My time capsule is only 9 months old, but when I move my macbook from the room where the time capsule is the signal is lost. It had been working for 9 months.
Initially I thought it was the broadband, but it can't be because
    1. It works via ethernet
    2. The connection works in the same room.
    Plus
The green light is permanently on.
I can't find any help for this on the site.
Please can someone advise. Maybe my settings need resetting, but I have no idea how

You can check to see if there might be other wireless networks using the same channel as your system, which can cause interference and speed issues.
Go to www.istumbler.net to download the utility. Once you have installed this in the Applications folder on your Mac, make sure that your Airport is turned on from your Mac and then open istumbler. A window will open to display your system and other wireless networks in range and what channels are in use. istumbler will also give you signal strength and noise measurements as well for your wireless system.
If you find that you are sharing the same channel with another system, go back into the wireless settings in Airport Utility and select a channel that is as far away as possible from the crowded channel. Sometimes, just changing to another channel may help.
