Time Machine unable to backup. "Backup disk not available"

I have been having issues backing up to Time Capsule for a few weeks. I keep getting error messages. The latest backup attempt was 'delayed'. When I clcik to see why, it says "The backup disk not available". It says the last successful backup was at 8:00 PM tonight, but that doesn't seem to make sense since it says it was delayed.
Are there steps I can take to try and resolve this?
Thanks

I have consistantly had this problem.
Time Machine could not complete the backup.
The backup disk could not be found.
Make sure the backup disk is connected or open the Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk.
If I unplug it and plug it back in it will probably work, although I have had to totally start from scratch a couple times to get it working.
Is this a DHCP issue or how can I avoid this in the future?
Thanks,

Time machine fails to complete backup

I've been getting the Unable to Complete Backup error message for several days.  Last good back up was 11-22-13 at 11:13PM.  I am running an iMac with OS-X 10.7.5.
I did the above steps in Console and got a huge string of lines; I tried to edit all repeitious ones that were the same, but still ended up with a lot of lines that seemed to develop more different processes over a few days.  Sorry to put all this stuff in here, but I don't honestly know what to make of all of this code language.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • TIME MACHINE UNABLE TO BACK UP AS NOT ENOUGH SPACE

I keep trying to  back up my Macbook Pro (I have a Buffalo hard drive) but on time machine is says that there is not enough space to complete the back up

    What is your question?

  • Error message from Time Machine: "Unable to complete backup.   An error occurred while linking files on the backup volume."  Using Time Machine Buddy, I got the following log entries: "Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: data"    ror occured while l

More from the Time Machine Buddy:  "Node requires deep traversal:/Volumes/Data"  and "reason: kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSibDirs"
I am using a Mac G5 with Leopard.  My LaCie data drive failed and I replaced it with a WD MyPassport drive, at which time the failed backups began.  The recent file updates do appear in Time Machine, but it appears to back up everything since the last completed backup.

    Hi Norm,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    (Repair both Drives)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • "Time machine unable to complete backup, Error while copying files"

MacBook Pro, 10.5.5, 500Gb Time Capsule. Backups have stopped working, I get an error message " Time Machine Error, Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume." Nothing I am aware of has changed with my system, updated to 10.5.5 a few days after it was out, backups just stopped working a few days ago.
The backups stop after a different amount of time/data transfer, never completes, always get the same error message. I am able to copy my entire Home folder to the Time Capsule drive (not the Time Machine sparse bundle) successfully.
Steps I've taken: Latest Time Capsule firmware. Repaired permissions. Tried to backup by ethernet and wireless. Deleted "In progress" backup file and started again. Erased entire drive and started fresh. Made a Genius Bar appt today and they gave me a brand new Time Capsule, no go.
    What can I do?
    Thank you for any help

does this happen on every backup? if so check the console log at the backup time. filter for messages involving backupd. it should give more extensive info on what the error is. sometimes TM chokes on a particular file. excluding it from TM or deleting it altogether might solve the problem.

  • Time Machine unable to complete backups

Time Machine is set up to automatically back up.  However, in the past couple of days I have noticed that the backups are not completing.  I am geting the following message:  The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/ my name MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use.  I cannot figure out why or how to fix the problem.  I do have iCloud running if that makes any difference.  Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

  • Can't install Mavericks, damaged disk, restore from Time Machine, unable to find destination disk. What to do?

After downloading Mavericks, tried installing, it told me that I have a damaged disk and to restore from backup. Selected Time Machine's latest backup. Then I was prompted to select backup disk. My only option was the Mac HD icon with a "?" on top of it, unable to verify disk. With the "continue" button grayed out, I hit the back button a few times in an attempt to start over. I went back to the install page and it started installing. 40 minutes later it was up and running. Every thing seemed fine. I tried opening GarageBand, I got the spinning wheel. Then a prompt page asking me to select a language. I selected English and the computer shutdown. It being late and I being frustrated, I decided to wait until morning.
On startup I got the message that I have a damaged disk and to restore from backup. Selected Time Machine's latest backup. Then I was prompted to select backup disk. This time there was no icon or anything to choose from.
I'm wondering if I need to use my original Mac mini, Mac OS X install DVD, or is it time for a trip to the Apple store.
    Ideas and options welcome.
    Thanks

It sounds as if your hard drive may have failed or may be failing. Boot your computer from the REcovery Disk by holding down the Command+R keys during the boot. From the Recovery drive you can run Disk Utility.  Once in DU select your hard drive then run "Repair Disk".
If errors are found and repaired run Repair Disk a second time.
If errors are found and not repaired you are going to need a more robust volume repair utiity such as DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, or Drive Genius and an external drive to boot from to run the repairs or...
You may be in the market for a new HD

  • Time machine unable to access network disk

I have a USB disk attached to my Airport Extreme, and use it as the target of my time machine backups from my mac book pro (connected via WiFi).  For the most part things work fine.  But if my macbook goes to sleep, after it wakes up it often (not always) gets the next time machine backup to fail with a message saying that it cannot access the disk.  At first I found a brutal method of correcting it: I would disconnect from WiFi, go to my AE and power cycle it.  After it came back the macbook never had any problem with the disk.  A little more exploration indicated that Lion wasn't unmounting the disk properly.  The following works (but sometimes requires a few iterations): I'll go to finder, eject the disk, and disconnect from Airport Extreme, and then go to the terminal and do
    sudo diskutil unmountdisk disk1
(I first do a diskutil list to find out the right disk)
and then ask time machine to backup again.  Many times I have to repeat this a few more times before it "takes".  Has anyone else run into this?  It clearly looks like a bug in Lion, since it never happened until I upgraded.
    Victor
PS. I understand that Apple says that they don't support time machine backup to network disks.  But they do to a time capsule!  It isn't really different.

I'm replying because, while I don't have a solution for you, I was experiencing the same issue at home not long ago. My solution has been to backup at the office (), but I'm about to switch back to running Time Machine at home. I think we'll be going through this together.
The difference in my situation is that my backup volume lives in a PowerMac G5, but I'm sure it's the same error.

  • Time Capsule - Internet and Printer Fine - Disk Not Available

I have a 1 TB Time Capsule with an external drive and printer connected to it. Internet access works fine as does the printer. From time to time, I cannot connect to the Time Capsule disk or the external disk. I also cannot connect to the time capsule itself using the Airport Utility. If I unplug and restart the Time Capsule, everything is accessible and works fine. Then, a day or two later, I cannot connect.
    Any ideas welcome!
    Thanks... JRMjr

    Thanks,

Macbook Pro with OS X, 10.5.8. For some time now time machine has been backing up to the external hard drive, but when I select an earlier date to restore my system, the "restore" selection is not available. Any ideas?

  • I have 2 auxillary disk drives for my MacBokk Pro. Time Machine uses one for backup and I use the other for storage, but I am unable to create a new folder or drag and drop files or folders to the aux drive.

I am unable to create a new folder on either of my auxillary disk drives.  I can access the files and folders that were there when I transferred one of the drives from a PC.  Time machine uses one for backup and I want to use the other to store photos which are large files.  An help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply.  If I reformat the drive will I be able to access the files on it from the MAC.  I do not share the drive with a PC.  The files were originally created on a PC which I no longer use.  I do want to continue to access the files put there by the PC.  I would like to not have to copy them over to the MAC hard drive just to use them.  The second aux drive is new and works fine because it was formatted by the MAC.  I can drag and drop files there and work with just as if they were on the internal drive.

  • HT3275 Since updating OS to Mountain Lion from leopard, I get the following error message when trying to backup with time machine on external drive.  Could not complete backup to media share.  The network backup disk does not support the required AFP feat

Since updating OS to Mountain Lion from leopard, I get the following error message when trying to backup with time machine on external drive.  "Could not complete backup to media share.  The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features."  What are AFP features and how do I get Time Machine to backup to my current external backup?

This means that your NAS does not support the required encryption. Update your NAS to the latest firmware or ditch it and buy a Time Capsule (they are the most reliable when using TM).

  • Time Machine: Backup Disk Not Available

I realize there are a few topics floating around about this issue, but I'm still not finding a solution. Not sure if my situation is different than the others but figured I'd take a shot a describing my scenario in a new thread and seeing if it generates any new ideas.
I have a 2TB Seagate external expansion drive connected to a MacMini on my home network. The drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and is not partitioned.
I have mounted the drive on my MacBook Pro 2.66/i7 running 10.6.6. I then go to the TM Preference pane and select the drive, enter the username and password for my admin account on the Mini. It indicates that it's preparing and then comes back a minute later with a Time Machine error indicating that the backup drive is not available.
I have an older MacBook Pro, my sons MacBook, and my wife's Macbook also on the network. Each of these Macs can mount the backup drive, select it in the TM Preference pane and successfully begin and maintain the TM backup.
I have created a second "test" account on my MacBook Pro. I have followed the same steps and have had no problems with time machine preparing and successfully beginning the back up account.
So - with those facts - I have had to conclude that there is something amiss with my main account.
Other steps I have taken on my MBP with my main account include:
    * Deleting the com.timemachine.plist file from /Library/Preferences - restarting and trying again. No luck.
    * Restarting into applejack and performing an "applejack auto restart". No luck
    * Removing all timemachine related entries in the Keychain, running Keychain FirstAid. No luck.
    * Reformatting the external drive on the Mini, repairing permissions and running a disk repair and starting all over again. No luck.
In each case above a restart was done before attempting to reinitiate the TM process.
So - with out blabbering on with any more details, I think it's clear that I'm at a bit of a loss as to what else I should try. I'm WIDE open to suggestions.

I resolved this issue just this morning (see below). This may not (or may) apply to your situation because yours magically corrected itself, but hopefully it will help somebody.
Environment Architecture: We appear to have a very similar system architecture to the one you describe. In my case, we have 4 macs all relying on Time Machine and a networked 1TB Time Capsule for backups. Each of 3 workstation macs share data from the 4th, which we use as a primary server. I ran into my problem when the Time Capsule filled up and stopped backing up our primary server due to lack of available space. All recommended solutions for freeing up space appeared time consuming, and because we do daily off-site backups through MOZY (we use Time Machine for simplicity of recovery for hourly backups) I could take the "easier" path of just reformatting the Time Capsule's data drive and start again fresh.
Problem identified: Per instructions, I used Airport Utility to erase my Time Capsule data drive, but thought I'd check my existing settings while I was there. Seeing the password prompt, and not remembering for sure what my password was, I thought I'd just reset it to what I wanted. Seemed benign at the time. When I started my 1st system's backup, I was prompted for the Time Capsule's password, and entered the new password. It accepted it as it should have, but then rejected the backup with a message indicating that I had provided the incorrect network account and password. The odd part was that it had originally accepted it, and even flashed the available space on the Time Machine preferences window. After much searching through these topics, I discovered that the password is stored multiple times -- some correctly and some not. Correcting the passwords fixed the problems.

Mac OS X 10.5.3 or later: Time Machine - "Backup volume could not be mounted" after changing network volume's password
    * Last Modified: October 14, 2008
    * Article: TS2048
As it turns out, Apple stores that password in multiple places in your Keychain (don't ask me why!), even using the identical Keychain entry name. All I can presume is that one piece of the software looked in one Keychain entry, and another looked in a different Keychain entry. The passwords were different (one was my original password, and one was my new password). Once I changed them to the same thing on each of my satellite stations, they all worked again and Time Machine is happily chugging along on all workstations.
