Time Machine unable to complete to Time Capsule

Every time I try to complete the initial backup, it can't complete. It always shows that it is trying to backup 21 mb, or 9,584 items. I don't know what this is? Is it some kind of hidden drive? It backs up the main drive which is 200 gb, then this thing happens and it doesn't complete. Folks - I've been using this as a file server, and a wireless appliance - but I bought it so I could do backups to time machine.
Some have claimed that it won't complete an initial time machine if there are files on the same drive, but others claim it doesn't matter. Help.

Sorry I'm not that hot on these. I can't back up in TM, get the error message but no indication what files are causing the problem. Used to back up fine, had problems for the past few months.
Getting nervous as I travel all round Africa and my data is far more important than the macbook, so need to copy it.
Going to update to 10.5.3 next Sunday (faster access) might this help?

  • "Time machine unable to complete backup, Error while copying files"

MacBook Pro, 10.5.5, 500Gb Time Capsule. Backups have stopped working, I get an error message " Time Machine Error, Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume." Nothing I am aware of has changed with my system, updated to 10.5.5 a few days after it was out, backups just stopped working a few days ago.
The backups stop after a different amount of time/data transfer, never completes, always get the same error message. I am able to copy my entire Home folder to the Time Capsule drive (not the Time Machine sparse bundle) successfully.
Steps I've taken: Latest Time Capsule firmware. Repaired permissions. Tried to backup by ethernet and wireless. Deleted "In progress" backup file and started again. Erased entire drive and started fresh. Made a Genius Bar appt today and they gave me a brand new Time Capsule, no go.
    What can I do?
    Thank you for any help

does this happen on every backup? if so check the console log at the backup time. filter for messages involving backupd. it should give more extensive info on what the error is. sometimes TM chokes on a particular file. excluding it from TM or deleting it altogether might solve the problem.

Time machine fails to complete backup

I've been getting the Unable to Complete Backup error message for several days.  Last good back up was 11-22-13 at 11:13PM.  I am running an iMac with OS-X 10.7.5.
I did the above steps in Console and got a huge string of lines; I tried to edit all repeitious ones that were the same, but still ended up with a lot of lines that seemed to develop more different processes over a few days.  Sorry to put all this stuff in here, but I don't honestly know what to make of all of this code language.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Hi Norm,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    (Repair both Drives)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • Time Machine unable to complete backups

Time Machine is set up to automatically back up.  However, in the past couple of days I have noticed that the backups are not completing.  I am geting the following message:  The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/ my name MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use.  I cannot figure out why or how to fix the problem.  I do have iCloud running if that makes any difference.  Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

  • Time machine unable to complete.

I have problems with Time Machine to back up my computer.
The following messages is shown " Unabable to compleate backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
I am using an external Hard drive of 500gb which is formatted by the time machine application.
Tried about 5 times by reformatting and changing to an other disk as well to no avail. Have excluded chat applications, aperture, iphoto and entourage as is suggested in one of the forums.
I also did a verify disk and this came up ok.
I am trying to make a full back up which is about 67 GB to 31 GB the back up goes well and than the above message appears
I have search the forums but no luck.
The hard disk functions ok I am able to move large amount of data to it without a problem
    Only Time Machine does not.
    Help.....

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
If it's your initial backup, the most common cause is the TM drive not being formatted correctly (even, on occasion, if TM formatted it!). Use Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) to verify the setup:
Select the top line, with the make and size. Towards the bottom, the *Partition Map Scheme* should be GUID (preferred) or +Apple Partition Map+ for an Intel Mac; +Apple Partition Map+ for a PPC Mac. If this is wrong, you must completely erase and reformat the drive, per item 5 of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum.
Select the line for the TM partition (with the name). Towards the bottom, the Format should be +Max OS Exended (Journaled).+ If this is wrong, you must erase the partition (not necessarily the whole drive) and change it, via Disk Utility.
If that's all correct, you need to find out just why your backups fail. There should be better messages in your logs. Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget.
It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).

  • Time Machine unable to complete/ "preparing"

This experience seems similar to others. Details:
Names for computer ("iMac") and external drive ("LaCie") do not use spaces or unusual characters.
External drive has been erased and re-partitioned as Apple Partition Scheme.
External drive has been connected with FireWire and with USB, with identical results.
Spotlight set to basically exclude both drives for now.
No other applications running during initial backup.
Energy saver set to never sleep.
In all cases, the initial backup quits after around 16 GB (of a computed 90 GB).
Subsequent incremental backups never get past a barber-pole with "preparing."
Have erased the external drive a few times, but with no change.
Sort of discouraging. Have been looking into this since Sunday PM. Unless anyone has a better idea, my sense is to abandon this and wait for a software update.

    Archive-and-install
This behavior persisted after an archive-and-install with no change.
    *Backing up*
In preparing for an erase-and-install, we copied all the files to another disk. The copy operation was terminated midway by the MacOS saying that a theme file for iDVD could not be copied. The message was repeated for another iDVD theme.
We then did another copy operation excluding these files.
    Erase-and-install
After an erase-and-install, Time Machine worked perfectly with all of the same hardware.
    Conclusion??
Time Machine copying problems may actually stem from difficulties with the files (not the disk structure being backed up), and may be the same difficulties experienced in a Finder copy.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • Upgraded my 2010 macbook pro to mountain lion, unable to complete time machine backup using time capsule.  Getting error 112

Upgraded macbook pro to mountain lion, get the following message
"the backup disk image "......." could not be accessed (error 112)
I've tried many of the suggestions from other discussion threads, still unable to get anything to work.  Have 4 other computers backing up to the same time capsule, all of them are functioning normally, however they are not upgraded to mountain lion.
    Suggestions?

This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings, including your exclusion list. If you have a long exclusion list that can't be recreated easily, you may prefer a more complicated procedure that preserves the exclusion list. In that case, ask for instructions. Otherwise, do as follows.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy it to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot, recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane, and run a backup to test. If TM now performs as expected, delete the file you copied to the Desktop.

  • Unable to recover Mavericks via Time Machine on iMac (2011). I have one Time Machine backup from this week On new Time Capsule. I already attempted safe boot and NPRAM reset. Hard drive and permissions verified as ok.

Some more history - I'm not too techie so added everything in I thought might be significant!
    - Installed Mavericks on iMac in October 2013
    - experienced regular low memory issues - used Memory Clean app as a workaround
    - last week decided to upgrade installed memory from 4gb to 16gb. Faster loading but still running out of memory - just takes longer to do so.
    - also last week purchased 2gb Time Capsule (to back up 660gb on 1TB drive)
    - one successful Time Machine backup completed last weekend.
    - I decided to try and clear some space, tidy my folders, old music files,  delete duplicates etc (Not system files)
    - then tried out 'time machine restore' just to test it out. Deleted files and folders recovered ok using Time Machine menu (the one that looks like outta space)
    - yesterday, Avast Anti-Virus flagged virus detected (sorry, I didn't manage to capture details) and quarantined file, but I couldn't get any windows to respond so forced Mac to shutdown.
    - attempted regular reboot , system hanging on white/ apple symbol screen.
    -  attempted Safe reboot - reboot stalls at mess 'BootCacheControl: unable to open /var/db/BootCache.playlist no such file or directory.
(I don't know if this is significant)
    - attempt NPRAM reset, reboot hanging at Apple symbol still
    - attempted reboot into Disk Utility. HD drive verified ok. Permissions checked and Safari permissions fixed (only)
    - finally attempting restore from Time Machine Backup via Disk Utility. Stalls at 'select a backup source'. Menu is 'searching for Time Machine Backup....'
Nothing is listed, after a few mins machine just goes to sleep.
My Time Capsule and networks are all switched on. No idea what to try next!

Most of the problems like this that people report on this forum are due to bad "utilities" like Memory Clean and Avast.
Your Mac probably didn't have a virus. There has never been an OSX virus "in the wild". Third party antivirus software is of very dubious utility on Macs. Macs are not PCs. OSX has anti-malware protection built into it already.
Do you have any other third party "utilities" on your Mac, such as CleanMyMac or MacKeeper?
Is the RAM you installed the recommended type of RAM for your Mac?
Take a look at this page: Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
But your OS may be damaged beyond repair, or beyond what disk utility is able to repair.
In that case you have a few options:
There is a small chance that a (reputable) third part utility like Techtool Pro 7  may be able to fix your OS.
Try to boot into single user mode (restart, hold down ⌘S until you see a black screen with white text) and repair your hard drive. Here's a reference with directions: Repair Your Hard Disk in Single User Mode | Everything Macintosh
bite the bullet, boot into the recovery partition or internet recovery, and erase your HD, reinstall Mavericks from scratch, and start over. Your documents are probably still on your Time Machine Backup. I wouldn't reinstall the documents via a migration- you don't want to reinstall bad system files along with your documents- but you could copy them one by one back to your internal HD. And most importantly- don't reinstall any third party "utilites" like Memory Clean or Avast (or any other third-party antivirus software, for that matter).

  • HT3275 Time Machine error. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume. Tried restarting, remounting external WD drive. Still cannot backup.

Time Machine quit backing up files. Bought a new WD external drive. Worked for awhile, then quit backing up. Tried restarting computer, remounting drive. Message: Time Machine Error. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred when copying files. Suggestions?

Thanks so very much for your help!! I'm boggled by it and now just about ready to dump the whole idea of Time Machine and backup using a cloning program. Maybe TM is only guaranteed to work well with Time Capsule these days?
Today there again was no backup. I did as you suggested, looked into Console. It showed many lines of "(Error) DiskStore: No block in wakeup" and also repeatedly "(Warning) DiskStore: Ignored bogus fetch...".
So I created a marker and attempted to initiate a backup, keeping Console open and refreshed. Here's what I got:

I'm thinking it's the standalone Buffalo backup drive not waking up, and so everything comes to a screeching halt. Do you also think I should abandon TM and just do manual backups every day using a clone program?

Normally, my Time Capsule backups  without issue. however, recently, it failed and I was unable to either complete a backup (done automatically) or enter Time Machine. I received a message that:" Unable to complete backup. Time Capsule already in use" when backup is attempted. When trying to access Time Machine when this occcurs, The message is" sparse image temporarily unavailable". Why does this happen? How can fix it without erasing the who;e image and starting all over?
I have Mac OS Mountain Lion.

You might need to if the bundle is damaged.
    You can verify the bundle.
    Read A5 here http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    Also try C12 and C17
Just a reboot of the TC might get it working again.
