Time machine use to retrieve data from other computers

Hi Guys,
I have 3 Macs at home. I don't know how to use the Time Capsule/ machine to retrieve data on one Mac from another? In other words, how do I use it to share data among all my Macs?
Thank you.

That doesn't work - I want to retrieve from a time machine backup to my time capsule of files on my notebook - which is in the shop (again) having the optical drive replaced. I can only retrieve files from the Mac mini I am using - where are my macbook pro backups???

HDD is a Toshiba 1TB, partitioned into two 500GB partitions.
    OS X version 10.9.2

Yes, sharing a TM disk is a bad idea, and disks are cheap enough so that you don't need to.
    Now
Have you tried to repair the disk yet

  • HT4889 Migration assistant doesn't see my 3TB Time machine it just keeps looking for other computers

I just did a clean install of Mountain Lion on my iMac and Migration Assistant doesn't seem to see my 3TB Time Machine.  It continuously looks for other computers, and nothing else.  I know the files work because I loaded it on my other MBP and it sees them just fine?  am I just inpatient or is something wrong?

This happened to me after hard drive replacement under the Seagate Drive Recall at the local Apple Store. Here's what I learned from the process:
I Wagged the Mac home, fired it up (with naked OS installed at the Apple Store), and it wouldn't see my Time Machine drive with Setup Assistant - not on firewire 800 nor USB. Just a grey spinner that lasts forever. When I try just continuing anyway, it offers me something that looks plausible, but then puts up a dialog about duplicate user name, and no matter what I enter, it always says "that user already exists". So I think - maybe Migration Assistant. Complete the setup, create an account, watch the nice welcome movie. BAM - there's my Time Machine drive on the desktop. OK - it has to work . . . but no. Same behavior in Migration Assistant, plus the new OS offers to start making backups on my Time Machine disk - it's not recognizing it at all.
So - back to the Apple Store - let the genius figure it out. It turns out there are multiple problems. First, the "genius" who imaged my new machine picked 10.7.2 but my machine had 10.7.5 - turns out, it's not enough just to have right cat. Even a point release older OS may not recognize a newer Time Machine drive. The guy at the desk said "We have images of everything but the 10.7.2 has free iLife in it, so they like to use that one". What the heck? They don't image what you had originally as a matter of sane process?
Having figured that out, we re-image 10.7.5 at the store thinking we've fixed it. But no - Setup Assistant still won't see the Time Machine drive. Not on USB, not on Firewire. Not in a box, not with a fox.
So here's the second trick - newer machines have a recovery partion. see: http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/  Boot with the option key held down, pick that partition, then you'll get a "system restore" option, to restore your whole system from a Time Machine backup. My drive was recognized by the recovery partition restore process when neither Setup nor Migration Assistant would. Obviously, there's something broken in Setup/Migration Assistant.
    Takeaway:
    - if you're getting a drive replaced by Apple, make sure they image *exactly* the same OS
    - if Setup Assistant fails, use the recovery partition for system restore
    - Use Recovery Disk Assistant http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433 NOW to make yourself a recovery thumb drive just in case. With Apple's new "no media" approach to the OS, you're hosed without it.

  • How to retrieve data from other websites?

    Hi all,
Don't know if anyone can point me in the right direction.
How can I retrieve or fetch data from other website’s (*Database*) ?
I’m trying to build a web application that would retrieve and fetch data from other website’s (Database) like the www.comparethemarket.com.
The data I’m trying to fetch it is in database, in my opinion I think I have to make a http web request then send parameters, then get the result. I could not find any tutorials
    on the web,
    Thank you.

Thank you.Unless the website provides an interface to their data, you are most likely not even allowed to do this. There is only one way to find out: contact them and ask about it or look around their website if their is a manual that describes how to do it. If there is such an interface, it will usually be some kind of web service (such as a SOAP interface).

  • Can I use the disk on my time machine 2TB to store data from iPhoto.  I want to take 250 GB and make it a disk

I have a time machine 2TB that is backing up my system.  Attached to the time machine is a 1T apple drive.  I would like to move the iPhoto file from my MacBook Air laptop to the time machine and use some of the disk as a storage area.  I plan to keep a backup on the secondary disk that is attached to the time machine is this possible? How do I make another partition on the time machine to handle my iPhotos.

Actually, it is possible to partition a Time Capsule, but it is not a practical procedure for most users, so that is likely what Kappy meant when he said that you cannot do this.
Consider that in order to partition the Time Capsule hard drive you must.......
o  Pull the drive from the Time Capsule (which voids the warranty)
o  Install the hard drive in a separate SATA to USB caddy or enclosure
o  Connect the caddy directly to your Mac to perform the partition procedure
o  Reinstall the drive back in the Time Capsule
o  Check to see if things work
In addition, the experts in the iPhoto support forum strongly recommend that you do NOT try to use the Time Capsule to store your working iPhoto Library. Apple warns against this as well in support documents.
Instead, as Kappy notes, the recommend solution would be to add a USB or Thunderbolt hard drive directly to your MacBook Air to store the iPhoto Library.

  • Use Time machine to back up data from one external drive to another

I keep my entire archive of digital photogarphy (700 gb) in a folder on an external drive. I want to duplicate that folder on another external drive and use Time Machine to automatically synch and add new photos to this back up folder on another drive.
    My questions are:
    Can Time Machine do this?
If not, then what could I use to do this?

If both are attached to the computer, you might be able to do that using a clone program that can regularly schedule backups. Many have free demo modes.
Clone  - Carbon Copy Cloner          (Often recommended as it has more features than some others)
    Clone – Data Backup
    Clone – Deja Vu

  • Migration assistant can't find backups on Time Machine drive that contains backups from multiple computers

My Retina Macbook Pro died due to a hardware error. During the diagnosis I was asked by Apple support personnel to format and reinstall OSX, which I did but did not fix the issue. The mainboard has since been replaced and I am trying to restore the TimeMachine backup I have.
The USB disk containing the TimeMachine backup contains TimeMachine backups for two different computers, my last Mac and the one I owned before that, which died earlier this year.
When I plug the drive in, I am able to browse the backups from both machines, as shown in the screenshot below.
The problem comes in when I attempt to run the migration assistant. I select the first option (restore from USB drive, etc). The migration assistant finds the USB volume and in the list underneath shows backups from a single computer - which it calls Unknown. The date of the last back is shown as 10 December 2012, the same date as the last backup from my old Mac (doolittle). There is no trace of the backups from my new mac.
Any ideas of how to get around this?
    Thanks
    Andrew

  • If my backup HD is not large enough, can Time Machine use more than one destination HD?

Hi, I have about 0,8 Tb on my Mac + 0,9 Tb in an external HD + 2,5 Tb in another external HD.
I have plenty of other HDs with 1-2 Tb that I could use as backup. Can I use them in Time Machine? Can Time Machine split all the data from my Mac and source HDs in more than one destination HD? I would love it if I could avoid buying large 6-10Tb HDs; they are still expensive... I'll appreciate your kind inputs!

Technically, you could store parts of your backup on different drives, but it would require you to be constantly changing the items excluded. It is designed to be a single backup, which you can do the entire backup to more than one drive.

  • Retrieving data from 3 tables

    Hi,
I am working on a report where I have to retrieve data from 3 tables(marc, mara, makt). For this I have used 3 select statements for retriving data from 3 tables. There r some fields which r not present in marc table where as present in mara and makt tables. So added thos fields in marc internal table t_marc.I have looped at marc table and used the read statement to read the data from mara table using the key field matnr from both the tables. This read statement is giving the sy-subrc value as 4.Could u pls tell me why this is happening?I am sending my code.
    SELECT matnr
           werks
           pstat
           lvorm
    FROM  marc
    INTO  TABLE t_marc
    PACKAGE SIZE 500
    WHERE matnr IN s_matnr
    AND   werks IN s_werks.
    IF NOT t_marc[] IS INITIAL.
    SELECT matnr
            ersda
            laeda
            meins
       FROM mara
       INTO TABLE t_mara
       FOR ALL ENTRIES IN t_marc
       WHERE matnr = t_marc-matnr
       AND   ersda IN s_ersda
       AND   laeda IN s_laeda.
      IF NOT t_mara[] IS INITIAL.
         SELECT matnr
                maktx
         FROM  makt
         INTO  TABLE t_makt
         FOR ALL ENTRIES IN t_mara
         WHERE matnr = t_mara-matnr.
       LOOP AT t_marc INTO wa_marc.
READ TABLE t_mara INTO wa_mara WITH KEY matnr = t_marc-matnr.
         IF sy-subrc IS INITIAL.
            wa_marc-meins = wa_mara-meins.
            MODIFY t_marc.
            APPEND wa_marc TO t_output.
          ENDIF.
READ TABLE t_makt INTO wa_makt WITH KEY matnr = t_marc-matnr.
          IF sy-subrc IS INITIAL.
            wa_marc-maktx = wa_makt-maktx.
            MODIFY t_marc.
            APPEND wa_marc TO t_output.
          ENDIF.
        ENDLOOP.

    hi hema,
Dont use three select stements for this scenario.
Just use innerjoin and join all the three tables.
Three tables should contain  MATNR (material number).
By using that retrieve data from 3 tables by using a single select statement.
    Eg:
    SELECT DISTINCT a~matnr    "MATERIAL NUMBER
             a~ersda    "CREATED ON
             a~mtart    "MATERIAL TYPE
             a~meins    "BASE UNIT OF MEASURE
             a~bstme    "ORDER UNIT
             b~maktx    "MATERIAL DESCRIPTION
             c~bwkey    "VALUATION AREA
             c~lbkum    "TOTAL VALUED STOCK
c~salk3    "VALUE OF TOTAL VALUED STOCK
             c~stprs    "STANDARD PRICE
             c~peinh    "PRICE UNIT
             c~bklas    "VALUATION CLASS
             INTO TABLE it_matdetails
FROM mara AS a INNER JOIN makt AS b ON a~matnr = b~matnr
                            INNER JOIN mbew AS c ON a~matnr = c~matnr
                            INNER JOIN marc AS d ON a~matnr = d~matnr
                            INNER JOIN mard AS e ON a~matnr = e~matnr
WHERE b~spras = sy-langu AND a~matnr IN matnr AND d~werks IN werks AND e~lgort IN lgort.
    pls reward if helpful.

  • How do I retrieve data from a 500 GB Time Machine used as external hard drive?

I have a very particular situation. For several years I used a 500GB Time Machine as a wi-fi broadcaster, a back up, and also as external storage for iTunes - I 'partitioned' it to allow for it's use as an external drive.
Fast forward, and I've replaced the Time Machine with a new 3 TB Time Machine, as well as purchased a separate external drive (3 TB Western Digital) to store my iTunes files (so I no longer need to partition). The new Time Machine is my wi-fu hub.
The problem: I need to retrieve the 300 gb of audio files that are on my old partitioned Time Machine, and move them to my new WD external drive. I've already set up the new Time Machine as my wi-fi broadcaster, and de-activated the old Time Machine.
(I had tried to move the files previous to setting up the new Time Machine, but I realized after de-activating it that I wasn't as thorough as I thought, so I need to go back and move them again.)
I've tried to re-connect to the old Time Machine using an ethernet cable, but when I do, it recognizes it as my wi-fi hub, and it screws up my network - it suddenly allows me access to the old Time Machine, but blocks access to the new WD external drive.
So in a nutshell - I need to be able to connect the old Time Machine to my laptop (a Macbook running OS X 10.7.5) and have my new network see it as just an external drive - so I can then move the 300 GB of audio files directly on to my new WD external drive.
Any thoughts on how I can do this?

Why not connect both drives to the computer, turn off the wi-fi, and then copy the files over. Or you can use Disk Utility/Restore to move the files. See the note - it will erase the WD drive.
You can then set things back to the way you want them. You should have more than one back up as hard drives do fail. In this case, you could use a clone and keep it on the WD drive.

  • Can we use Time Machine to back up data on Time Capsule from the outside of network?

I have Time Capsule at home.  Can I use Time Machine to back up data of portable nootebook when I am working at office?

If you mean over the internet, you can but it will be so slow and more than likely so unreliable it is a poor method to use. Remember all internet is limited to upload speed.
Lion does a temporary backup onto local hard disk.. which is useless of course if the hard drive is damaged.. but helps if you delete an important file. Then when you go back home and it discovers the TC is available it will then backup again from where it left off.
I think it is only a major issue if you are away from home for major lengths of time, weeks or months.

In other words, when time machine backs up again, will it delete the files from the back up that I have deleted from my computer?

No, I do not believe so. Time Machine would keep all those now-deleted files in previous backups, and as time goes by those backups might be deleted if you needed room, but it would still keep one backup from each day in last month, as well as one from each week forever, as long as you don't start running out of room, then just the oldest would be deleted to make room if needed.
I use a backup drive about double the size of my drive to be backed up, so I would guess it will never get to the point where deleted files being replaced by new ones being backed fill up that drive to the point where backups actually have to get deleted.
