Time Machine Very Slow

I hope somebody can help with this. I'm about out of ideas.
The problem -- Time Machine is taking anywhere from 30 min to 1 hr or more to do an incremental backup. It takes so long that as soon as a backup ends, another begins.
The source disk is my system disk. Macbook Pro circa 2007. OSX 10.6.8
The destination is a 1.5T OtherWorld Computing external drive, partitioned into four parts, one reserved for Time Machine. Working fine in other ways.
The backup always happens in two steps, always the same, the first is about 147,000 files, the second, about 84,000.
The size of these files is tiny -- 147,000 files can equal as little 5 mb. That is essentially meaningless -- it would mean that each file is just a few bytes.
And it takes a LONG time to back up these tiny files. Several SECONDS per kilobyte.
I've done all the steps listed here
http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/D2.html
http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/A4.html
I finally ran Disk Warrior and, low and behold, that seemed to solve the problem. But then I upgraded to 10.6.8 and things are now moving at a crawl again. I ran DW again, and formatted the destination partion and started over. No good. Same thing. Maybe worse.
Help! Anybody have any ideas? I'm about ready to give up on TM. Would it be worth starting up in safe mode and running a backup from there as a test? I'll try anything at this point.
Steve

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
That is quite slow, but as other posts say, might not indicate a problem.
A couple of things you can do that might speed it up:
Exclude your TM disk/partition from any anti-virus scanning.
Also exclude it, at least temporarily, from Spotlight via System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy.
There might be a clue in your logs. download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget from: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/timemachinebuddy.html. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. If you see something there that seems suspicious, copy and post the messages here (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the small window).

  • Time Machine very slow when backup disk almost full

My Time Machine backups on a Time Capsule (first generation, 1 TB) have become extremely slow recently. The disk is almost full, but I don't think that should be a problem as Time Machine deletes the oldest backups by itself. It has been, so I don't think that in itself should cause a problem.
This becomes particularly annoying because whenever backups are going on, the system doesn't allow me to access the "Open" or "Save" dialogues - probably because it wants to check the Time Machine disk, but can't, or only can very slowly. Whenever I do this, the app in question just freezes.
Anyone else has this problem, and does anyone know a fix? I don't want to start a new backup if I can avoid it.

Thank you. Did that, and it seems to be working now - though it actually seemed to have got better even before I ran Disk Utility. Before, even rebooting didn't help.
Yes, if there's a problem inside he sparse bundle, rebooting (the Mac and/or TC) won't help.
Time Machine is a great technology, but it seems to have strange quirks sometimes
    It does indeed!
    Once again, thank you.
You're quite welcome, and thanks for the star!

  • Time Machine Very Slow (321 Days) Please Help!

Hi all, I've got a 2012 MBP and have had problems with TM since day one.
I'm running all the latest software with a brand new Time Capsule and it states that it will take over 300 days to back up.
I originally used a NAS and TM was very very slow along with having to reformat and start again every few weeks so I gave in and got a TC thinking it would solve my problems but it's returned again.
I've tried reformatting, disabling spotlight, wired and wireless connections, different hard drives and still the problem persists. Occasionally it also fails to find the backup disk so I have to reformat and start again.
It's driving me absolutely insane because despite messing and messing, trying different solutions the problem always seems to return at random. It will work great for a week or 2 then it's back to square one.
Can someone please restore my sanity and help?

To update, I got up this morning and it was still stating some 22 days after copying a few gb in 18 hours so I restarted (again). TM then stated it couldn't find the back up disk so I again pointed it to the right disk and it now appears to be stuck again after doing over a gb in a minute or two.

  • Time machine very slow with mountain lion

Time Machine backups seem very slow with Mountain Lion.

Same problem here. I just upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. I only got 19 GB of space, but Time Machine wants 10 hours, whereas in OSX Lion a full backup would take just under an hour, and incremental updates were lightning fast.
I even sat it up to do it overnight, but on 8 hours it was only half way through only 10 GB. I can't live with that in the future.
Im trying to backup on a SD card which seems to work very good in Lion. Im on a 2012 Macbook Air using a SSD.
My bite of the apple has been somewhat sour. I tried reformatting the SD card, well knowing that I would lose old backups. But still the backup is extremely slow. Now I can't install Lion or Mountain Lion from scratch without having to wait 10 hours for TM backup or installing tons of applications and settings again. Bummer. I'm never going to early adobt a OSX upgrade again.

  • Time Machine very slow, Safari and iTunes have to Force Quit

Anyone else having these issues after Mavericks "upgrade"?
Time Machine is so slow as to be ineffective of useless, symtoms:
         - takes hours to prepare and run a backup of a couple of GB to the Time Capsule, anything up to 20 hrs!
         - constantly revising the amount to be backed up, up and down
         - seems to freeze periodically ad stick part way through with no change to the backed amount for hours, then speeds up, freezes, speeds up
         - time remaining estimate alternates between "casculating, estimates of hours and seconds! wildly inaccurate
                  - it's been saying 5 seconds remaining for the last 2 hrs.
         - have done two backup verifications to check for Time Capsule problems - none
         - only two successful backups achieved since the Maverisks "upgrade" due to the time it takes
         - both Time Capsule and Airport Express have the latest firmware and software
Coincident with this, both Safari and iTunes (the latest Mavericks compatible versions) both freeze when trying to quit them - have to force quit.  Both experience random slow downs and with the spinning rainbow beachball.
Looks like a Mavericks problem with the Wifi and Timemachine?
Using a late 2008 aluminium unibody Macbook with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, 100Gb of free space o the SSD.  Connecting via Wifi to Time Capsule (2TB, with 1.8TB free) and Airport Express (both n Wifi).

Check whether there is a crash report:
Go to your Applications Folder and open your Utilities Folder. Open the application Console.
In the left-hand column, click on Crash Reporter.
Click on the small triangle under Crash Reporter in the l/h column and they will all be listed.
Scroll down to the latest Safari report and click on it.
Now click on the r/h column (which now only shows THAT crash report and then Command-a to copy it all.
Come back here and Command-v it to post it here!

  • Connection with iMac and Time Machine VERY slow

    People
For the past of couple of days the connection with my iMac and Time Capsule has gone askew. The iMac shows the wireless connection at 5GHz with a transmit rate over 200. However, internet is slow and backing up about 300mb is in its 24th hour and it's only reached 180mb.
I don't understand what may have happened. The two machines have been best mates for a long time and now something's gone wrong. The only thing I did a couple of days ago is install the Update for the Apple Magic Mouse.
On the other hand, my MacBook, which also have the Magic Mouse update, has not trouble with internet speed - wireless, once again - and the Time Machine backups are happening without a hitch.
I bit the bullet and turned off the Time Machine and rebooted it. Unfortunately, it's made no difference.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?

Both your 5 GHz band and the guest band have the same SSID unless you have assigned separate names to them. I think it's much easier to identify them if they have separate names of your choice.
If you have a separate name for the guest 2.4 GHz band, click on the Airport icon at the top of your screen and then click "Join other network". The 2.4 GHz band should appear as a choice and you can connect to it.
I'm using Leopard, not Snow Leopard so I don't know if things display the same way on our operating system. If you want your computer to connect to a given network:
    Click System Preferences, then Network.
Click the AirPort connection on the left and then click the Advanced button at the lower right. You can drag the network that you want your computer to connect to first to the top of the list.

  • Time Machine/ very slow now on few KBs... Backup finishing took ages

I've set up Time Capsule two days ago (very timeconsuming with weirdnesses (several times I had to unplug TC and plug in again so that it got recongnized by AirPort and configured). Nevertheless it worked after all (I really don't like it when I don't know why it suddenly worked and why not earlier)...
The first backup of 210 GB took two days (15 and 14 hours, which is roughly 7GB/hour)but was not finished completely (message 'Backup abschliessen/finishing' stayed there for ages, until I switched off my Mac)
Now on the third day a backup of 441 KBs is shown in Progress bar and I am not sure if this the little bit left from yesterday or the new backup of files changed yesterday (I did not do real work on it yesterday so it might be really less)
Anyway, the speed is crawling ... 30KB in 20 minutes...
How does this come? Are those special files?
Has anybody experienced this harsh decrease in speed as well?
Shall I stop and start again?

    further observation:
after those 441 KB (which took more than an hour to back up) another 420 MB were done in few minutes only.
now that the hourly backup takes place again, I get shown those 441 KB once again which backups slowly as a snail.
what could be so special about these - assumable system's files (as it needs a backup after an hour and I have not changed anything that in the last two hours that could have exactly that same size of 441KB and contains 49.035 objects...) - that it takes them so long to backup?
it would be nice if the progress bar showed what files it is currently updating (or at least in the backup volumen's folder this could be shown in the 'modified dates' column)

  • Time Machine WIFI slows down and Fine after I unplug it?

My Time Machine WIFI slows down to an absolute crawl and then after I unplug it and plug it back in, it's back to normal. Can someone help me?

My Time Machine WIFI slows down to an absolute crawl and then after I unplug it and plug it back in, it's back to normal.
This is a classic case of the effects of wireless interference from other networks around you. See the link at the bottom for more information about this.
It might first help to understand why things improve when you unplug the Time Capsule and then power it back up. When you do this, the Time Capsule will scan to find the best available wireless channels to use at the time.
Unfortunately, other wireless routers are doing the same thing all the time, so after a few hours or a day or two, the channel(s) that the Time Capsule was using become overcrowded and the wireless slows down to a crawl. Cordless phones can also create interference issues for a wireless network as well as any number of other electronic devices.
Unless you can convince other users around you to turn off their wireless routers, there is not much that you are going to be able to do to come up with a permanent fix. For now, locate the Time Capsule as far away from any outside walls in your home as possible and use the 5 GHz band for as many connections as you can.
A friend of mine who recently moved into a new apartment complex has the same problem. He has to restart his wireless router at least twice a day, sometimes more on the weekends.  Too many wireless networks.....not enough channels.

  • Time machine works slow

After updating to Mavericks the finder started working really slowly, bugging and I also hava problems with time machine - the sistem starts to make a backup copy it goes too slow... for a night it can copy only 1-2mb of 500gb?
any ideas how to solve that problem?

since i updated to maverics, the timemachine and the finder are extremly slowly, i mean realy much slowlier than "microsoft-speed". But i checked it again, i closed my MBP an found the white apple on it´s top..... its an apple. In different forums i read, that its a problem with spotlight. The backup with 4.87 GB is now, after 3 hours an 44 minutes at 3.84 GB.
    Even Microsoft is faster.

  • Time Capsule / Time Machine very very slow

I'v been having problems with very slow backups using a Time Machine / Time Capsule combo and I've been looking around this forum and the web in order to figure out what it is, but I couldn't find any specifics relating to my situation. Both the preparation and the backing up stages are both very slow.
I hadn't used Time Machine since before Christmas as it become unreliable after updating to Yosemite but thought I'd try and get backups running again. It took about 16 hours to complete it's first backup of 17gb, then today's backup of 475.9mb took 4 hours to prepare and it's only backed up 167.7mb as I write this.
Can anyone with a good technical understanding of OS X, Time Capsule & Time Machine backups tell me what the problem is by looking at the console output below?
    Hope someone can help, thanks.

There is an 8 hour gap between this message and the one before it.
This message is related to the use of encryption. If you are still getting it even after you have turned encryption off then something is still hanging around. And it is a big problem.
The previous log entry that it may also be the concern is
    Feb  4 00:28:04 xxxxxxxx-MacBook-Pro-2.local com.apple.backupd[135]: Verifying backup disk image.
So it is doing a full verify of the backup.. that is extremely time consuming over wireless. It takes much longer to verify than to do the backup. That is because of the long gap since the last backup. When you wait so long it is sometimes better to simply start over.
It is essential when this happens to be using ethernet with wireless turned off.
Make sure IPv6 is set correctly to link-local only in the ethernet settings of the computer.
Why your latest one is so slow is again a Yosemite bug mystery.
However I would like you to test actual network speed copying files to the TC.
Stop the present backup.. if it is still running. Then via finder simply copy a file to the TC hard disk.. a single very large file say 100-1000MB and give me a network speed using activity monitor.
Yosemite has real network issues on top of real TM issues.
Test by doing a TM backup to a USB drive plugged into the computer. If this is dramatically faster the issue is mostly network rather than TM.
If it still fails to backup in reasonable time periods.. and for people having big issues.. I recommend give up on TM until apple have managed to patch the bugs. Use an alternative like Carbon Copy Cloner.. I would do that even if TM does work if you want a backup you can trust.

  • Is this first back up with Time Machine too slow?

I'm running my first backup onto a new Western Digital Essential 1 terrabyte via a USB connection.
It started at 2AM. It's now 9AM and the progress bar reads:
    "16.5 Gigs of 118 Gigs"
That's a little better than two gigs an hour.
This seems very slow to me and I'd like to know if that impression is correct. At that rate it seems like the back up will take more than two days.
    Is this "normal?"

Yes, that's ridiculous. While Time Machine backups are slower than just copying things, and especially slower at the beginning, you should get roughly 40 - 60 GB/hour, on average.
First, make sure the drive is set up properly, per #C1 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If so, try the things in the green box of #D2 there. Most of them can be done without cancelling the backup.

  • Time Machine backup slow in copying phase

I've had a gander through Pondini's (excellent!) site and other locations, but still can't seem to get TM to backup at a regular pace.
I've got it connected via ethernet, but with about 500GB to backup and a copying speed that managed to do only 40GB in 14 hours, it's waaaaaay too slow.  Current message says "Backing up: 44.01 GB of 499.82 GB"
I've done various things like removing Sophos for Mac, relaunching Finder, checking the Activity Monitor to see if there's anything hogging CPU, re-booted my My Book Live NAS and a few other things besides.  Nothing's helped.  Below is a copy/paste of details from EtreCheck.  Can anyone help?

In case it's useful to someone who stumbles on this some time in future, I had another look at Pondini's site and found mention of TechTool Pro causing issues, of which  I'm running v7.
I went into System Settings/TechToolProtection and Disabled protection features.  After a minute or so, I got a bump in speed, with TM now copying a GB every 4 - 5 minutes.  Still very slow, but something of an improvement.

  • Time machine backup slow

A few days ago I upgraded to 10.7.5. Since then I am NOT ABLE to complete a time machine backup. Last run was 12 hours and only 20% of the changes were backed up. In addition suddenly spotlight started to reindex and this also takes forever. Plus an important utility "EOS Utility" for managing pictures coming from Canon EOS cameras don't work any more. As soon as I plug in a camera the application quits.
All this was running fine before the last minor upgrade!
    What's happening?

All this was running fine before the last minor upgrade!
Yes it was. Now it's not:
    time machine slow in 10.7.5
Time Machine backup very slow in Lion
Summary: the upgrade broke Spotlight, which manifests itself in absurdly slow Time Machine performance.
We just have to wait for Apple to fix it.
Don't know if your Canon EOS utility is related or not. Probably not I would think.

  • Time Capsule VERY slow ethernet back-up on my iMac

Hi anyone who can help....I'm getting really frustrated with Time machine
It seems quite afew people are experiencing problems with TC....
BUT they all seem to have different issues. Mine is simple.
As a wireless network it works just fine, last weekend i had some friends over and we had 4 laptops going at once - speed was fine
Backing up - My G4 powerbook works FLAWLESSLY, backing up wirelessly.
BUT...My G4 iMac (connected directly via ethernet cable) hasn't been able to do a back-up since got it. It gets stuck on preparing or takes day's (Yep DAY's) to do a few 100 MB.....
Obvoiusly the TC is working, but not the wired connection. I can't try my iMac wirelessly, as it doesn't have an airport card
ANY suggestions? Oh and I don't have any virus software installed

    Andrew,
*_Slow Time Capsule Transfer Via Ethernet_*
    *Disable Anti-Virus Software*
“Using virus scanning software can make Time Machine backups very slow. If you use Norton Antivirus 10 AutoProtect or a similar product, try turning it off during backups.” [http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/15140.html]
    *Create An “Ethernet Only” Location*
While you are physically connected to the Time Capsule via ethernet you may still be experiencing slow data transfer speeds because your Airport network is still active and taking priority.
Connect one end of a Cat-5 Ethernet cable into one of the LAN ports of the TC (<•••>) NOT to the WAN port (wheel icon). Connect the other end to your Macs ethernet port.
Next, go to System Prefs --> Network.
At the top of the window note what “Location” you are currently using, as you will need to return to this setting later.
Now, change “Location” to “Edit Locations”.
Click the “+” button and create a new location named “Ethernet Only”.
    Click “Done”.
In the Services Pane on the left, eliminate all other services using the “-” button leaving “Ethernet” only. If you choose to leave other services listed then al the very least move Ethernet to the top of the list using the Action Menu (gear button) at the bottom and "Set Service Order".
Verify that “Configure” says “Using DHCP”.
Click "Apply" in the lower right.
You should be seeing an assigned IP Address and the Status should say “Connected”. The dot beside “Ethernet” should be green.
Now begin your backup or transfer of files.
You should still have internet access during this period.
Once the backup/transfer is complete, remember to change the Network Prefs “Location” back to “Automatic”, or whatever setting it had originally been, to restore Airport connectivity.
    *Adjust Ethernet Speed*
    Open Network Preferences.
With Built-in Ethernet selected on the left, click "Advanced" in the lower right.
Click "Ethernet" tab on the far right.
    What is selected beside "Speed"?
Try changing this setting and see if it makes a difference.
    Next launch Airport Utility.
Select the Time Capsule on the left.
    Click “Manual Setup”.
    Select “Internet” from the toolbar.
    Click “Internet Connection” tab.
Near the bottom verify that “Ethernet WAN Port” is not set to a slower speed. Either choose “Automatic” or the fasted speed available.
If you have made any changes, click “Update”.

    *Slow Full Backup After Restore*
Try either deleting the “old” backup disk image or copying it to another disk. Then start the “new” full backup again. Some users have experienced improved speed when the “old” disk image was removed from the backup disk.
Let us know if this was helpful.
    Cheers!
