Is it possible to back up Macbook to Mac mini with Time Machine via Airdrop?

Yes there is.

Toward the bottom there is a write up of how to setup time machine over a network. For you the only difference is that you would using wireless to connect instead of wired by Ethernet. For the first backup, you may want to connect by Ethernet just to speed things up.

  • Can't back up MBA on Time Capsule using Time Machine Via Wifi

    Hi,
I can't back up MBA on time capsule using Time Machine via wifi.  I bought the time capsule new Dec 2014.  I was able to backup for the 1st 3 days.  In less than a week time, a message came up every time I tried to back up: "Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to AirPort Time Capsule. The backup disk could not be found. Make sure the backup disk is connected or select a different backup disk".  So, there's been no backup at all for almost 3 weeks.  Wifi connectivity under Airport Utility is fine.  Green light on the time capsule is on etc.
Please kindly advice what is going on with this time capsule wifi backup.  Do I have to connect the time capsule with MBA with a physical cable to perform this job?
    Many thanks in advance,

  • OS X Restore with Time Machine via LAN does not work

    Hi all,
i did a full backup of my mac mini with mountain lion on a time capsule via LAN. Tried to do a full restore on a new hard disk and connect to the time capsule after i booted into a restore environment. I was able to choose the time capsule as the restore source and connected using my dedicated backup user, which was also used to create the backup before. But after i cannot chose my just created backup!
Using a local USB disk with time machine everythings workes fine. But the main reason why i chosed time capsule is, that i can make my backups of all the used mac books and minis  via LAN / WLAN...
So, is there anybody else experiancing this Problem?

    Hi,
tested OS X Restore with Time Machine via QNAP NAS Box - working without any problem. So with the Time Capsule it might be firmware problem?!
Will update thies Thread when i've any news...

You might post this query on the iPhoto forum and perhaps someone there can provide an answer.
I tried this on my MBP and it seems that you have to restore the entire iPhoto Library.  What I did was put the current library in a separate folder on the desktop and then I restored the library from a prior date.  If you were to do that, you then could extract the desired photos and then delete the restored library.  Then place the current library back to the original location and import the desired photos.
Not tidy but it seems it will work.
    Ciao.

  • Backing up with Time Machine via "Personal File Sharing" and Airport Disk

I've been using Time Machine on my own Mac at home and want to use it to backup other Macs in my house as well. Right now I'm just backing up over FireWire, but plugging my disk into each of the other Macs one at a time doesn't seem to make much sense.
Besides going out and buying a Time Capsule, Leopard Server, or Xsan, what are my options for backing up multiple Macs to one disk? I've read that using an Airport disk is somewhat risky because of some "premature file transfer confirmation." Has anyone ever used Time Machine w/ Airport Disk and had problems?
I've also noticed that you can back up to shared drives, like if I share my current FireWire disk so people can back up to it, but wouldn't that require for people to connect to the host Mac manually via Finder? And wouldn't that in turn defeat the purpose of automatic scheduled backups?
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

the only supported option besides Time Capsule is to back up to a hard drive directly connected to a mac running leopard on the same local network. as you mention it would indeed require that this drive be mounted first. you can automate mounting this drive on login and simply keep it mounted at all times. to do that mount the drive of the host Mac on a remote mac and while it's mounted there add it to the login items in system preferences->accounts.
You can also use drives directly attached to an airport extreme base station. that works in the same way as backups to a Time capsule.

  • Time machine via airport

thought it should be possible; thought to be smart and created back -up via usb cable from imac to hard disk and connected this disk hereafter with airport extreme, but.... time machine would not use the existing backup and started a new one, after connecting to this disk. Creating time machine wireless will take days I think ( in my case 60 Gb to start with) Does anyone know how to handle or just accept that I have to start over again via wireless connection ??

TM uses different procedures for directly connected drives and network drives. For drives connected wirelessly it creates a sparse bundle and keeps all the files in it. for directly attached drives it doesn't creates a sparse bundle and copies files directly to the disk. the two methods are not interchangeable. you can try the [following hack|http://jamesshore.com/Blog/How-to-Accelerate-Time-Machine.html] to speed up the initial backup.

  • Time Machine via Ethernet? Can't find the option.

I have a MyBook Duo that I want to use as my Time Machine back up. I want to do that via Ethernet. However when I go to Time Machine Preferences > Select Disk it opens up Airport and fails to find an HD - there is no Ethernet option.
    Am I doing something wrong?

    Hi Eric
Firstly, thanks for your patience with this. I very much appreciate you taking the time to answer.
The difficultly is that System Prefs > Time Machine doesn't offer me those options. As you can see, it has the external drive where I've been saving my backups via wireless here.
However, having now connected via Ethernet, if I go to Select Disk I get this:
If I go to Set Up Time Capsule it goes to Airport and searchers for a wireless connection and offers no alternate options.
I suspect I'm doing something very dim, but I can't see why I can't get this to work.

  • Backup w/ Time Machine via Target Disk Mode?

So here's my situation, my computer is stuck on the grey screen of death, but it mounts fine in Target Disk Mode. Its been about 2 weeks since my last Time Machine backup, so I would like to recover the last two weeks of files. If I can do that, then I'll just wipe the HD and start with a fresh install, however, since I can't get it to start up, is it possible to backup my computer to my Time Machine backup using Target Disk Mode through my wife's computer? Any help is appreciated.
(If not, then is it possible to run a time machine backup from single user mode?)
Here's basically what I'm talking about:
MBP (Target Disk Mode) > Wife's MacBook > External HD (Time Machine Backup)

That may work, but you'll get a whole new, full backup, identified as belonging to the MacBook (since that's where TM would run, and the MBP would look like an external HD.)  Unless you exclude it, you'd also get the internal HD on the MacBook. So it will require a lot of space and time.
There's no way to fool it into making an incremental backup.
Or, use the same setup, but make a "clone" on a separate HD or partition, via the Restore tab of DIsk Utility, or one of the "cloning" apps: CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper.

  • Using a third party ext hard drive with time machine via aiport extreme

    Hi all,
I have a 500GB external hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme Base Station 802.11n and so far have been unsuccessful in getting Time Machine to work with this.
I have been told this is possible, but cannot figure out how to do it.
    _+*Any ideas?*+_
We have one Macbook running 802.11n and one running 802.11g that is unable to be upgraded (as Core Duo, not Core 2 Duo).
    Thanks,

TM suports WiFi backup only to TimeCapsule.
There are unauthorized hacks to force TM to use WiFi links and you can search for them in these forums. I do not recommend a hack when it comes to preserving valuable data.

  • Share Time Machine via iMac

I have an external hard drive connected to my iMac for Time Machine. Recently I've bought a Macbook Pro and I would like to make backups using the same external hard drive.
    1. Is it possible for 2 machines to make backups on one hard drive without overwriting each others data?
    2. If 1 is possible, how to set this up?
    Thanks!
    Martijn

    1. Time Machine can backup any number of machines to a single backup drive provided it's large enough to accommodate multiple machines. A TM backup drive should have at least twice the capacity of the drive or drives backed up.
    2. Turn on File Sharing so your MBP can access your iMac and its connected drives. Open TM preferences on the MBP, click the button to designate a backup drive, locate the drive in the device list and select it for the backup drive. Be sure to exclude other drives from its backup. Ideally you want to do this over Ethernet because wireless is painfully slow.
Alternatively, move the backup drive to the MBP and set up for a normal TM backup. Move the drive back and forth as you require. TM will keep up with the moves.
See User Tips for Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.

  • Time Machine via Network

Im 90% sure this is possible. Since my mac is a laptop ill be moving around with it. and I want time machine to work no matter where I am in the house. so i hook up my backup drive to my wirelessly networked PC, and i want time machine to backup wirelessly to it. I have gotten the drive to show up so that time machine can use it. but when i try to backup it says "preparing" and then says the backup image could not be created. any success stories? i have heard of other people getting this to work. I dont want to shell out 300 dollars for an overpriced wireless backup solution from apple.

    ok

    this worked for me .
i had an external USB harddrive formatted in fat or ntfs, cant remember, and it was connected to my windows PC, and shared.

  • Time Machine via DVD-DL?

My apologies as I am reasonably sure this topic has been discussed previously. I searched here, but didn’t find my answer. After much wrangling I have a build of 10.6 that I am very happy with. I would like to take an image of the Mac’s HDD and save it to DVD-DL. I don’t have an external HDD so I can’t use that for Time Machine.
So, my question: Can one use 10.6’s Time Machine for a one time, Mac OS HDD backup to a DVD-DL?
    Thank you for your assistance!

no. TM can only back up to a regular hard drive. beside a DVD even a dual layer one is WA-A-Y too small to fit a backup of your main drive. external drives are quite cheap these days. I suggest you buy one.

  • Can I back up to time machine via ethernet instead of wifi?

A while ago I moved house and have only just got around to setting up my time capsule again. I started a backup its probably 10 weeks since the last one and I have about 75GB to back up. It is taking ages on the wifi link, can I plug in ethernet to speed up the process. I Have had a snout about but cant find a preference that allows this
    Any tips?

Doh! all sorted now - i'd forgotten about airport utility!

  • How do I stream itunes from my time machine via windows XP to a Denon AVR 1707 via Airport express?using

I am trying to play music to a Denon AVR 1707 bought in 2006. It has an ipod 3.5mm jack in back. I bought a Denon wireless ipod docking station that plugs into the 3.5mm jack and red&white rca jacks + s video. It plays when an ipod is docked, but think it's crap as I can't share from my time capsule, ipad, iphone or ipod or touch wirelessly. I have windows xp with a Time Capsule and the wired a second hard drive for itunes music and pictures. I have an Airport express that works to my alarm clock, HOW do I make this work on the Denon?  Thanks for any help!

I just got off the phone from Denon and was told the 3.5mm jack is just to run a remote control for their equipment not a digital input jack. Denon said to get a 3.5mm to rca splitter and that should work. If this works I just need to figure out how to share from my Time Capsule to my ipad. Any feedback is helpful.  Thanks.

  • Backup to Time Machine via VPN?

My TM is on the network in the office.
I can VPN in, and ping the IP of the TM.
When I try to back up it can't find the drive.
What do I need to setup so that I can back up when I am out of the office?
    Thanks,
    Steve...

When I log into the VPN I can use "Connect to Server" with the TC's IP and it will mount.
When I launch TM, it says "preparing for backup", but never gets any further.
If I go to the terminal screen I can ping the TM using the IP address.
