Time Machine volume no longer shared on network

In my setup, I have a PowerMac G5 with two 1TB drives (running the latest Leopard) and a MacBook Pro (October 2008) running the latest Snow Leopard. I use the second drive in the G5 as a Time Machine drive for both itself and the MBP.
Ever since a few days ago, the MBP has been unable to connect to the backup drive. If I try browsing the G5's volumes, the main drive and my home account share appear, but the TM drive doesn't appear in the share list at all.
The G5 continues to be able to back up to itself, and I've run Disk Utility "verify disk" on the TM drive which hasn't found anything wrong.
I also have a G4 Mac mini running the latest Leopard and is also unable to see the TM drive. So, I'm fairly certain that something is wrong on the G5 which is preventing the TM drive from being shared.
I haven't found any telling messages in Console on any of the three systems.
Has anyone run into this and, ideally, managed to fix it?
Thanks.

Oh, and I just realized that the volume stopped being shared when I last rebooted the G5 (probably for some software update) - the MBP's last successful backup was on 12/2/09 at 10:43 PM, and the G5 was last rebooted on 12/2/09 at about 11 PM.

  • Time Machine will no Longer connect to network drive.. Although the drive is visible and accessible by the system.

Time Machine was working fine, until one day back up was failing due to being unable to delete the old backup. now it will no longer connect to the network drive although the external drive is accessible through the system.. any ideas?

Time Machine is completely unrlable on any networked drive unless that drive is connected to one of the new Airport Extremes. I'm not surprised that you're encountering problems with it if you're using a networked drive. Can you plug the drive into your MacBook Pro and see if it will backup? The backups may - probably are - corrupt.

  • Encrypted Time Machine Backups on a shared drive

    Hello community,
    the following situation:
I have an iMac and a MacBook Air, both running Mountain Lion.
Both use FileVault 2 encryption of the whole MacOS partition.
The iMac is connected to an external USB hard drive, which I use as Time Machine volume. I've set up Time Machine to encrypt the backups on the external volume (it took abou 2 days until the whole drive was encrypted).
So far no problems. No let's get to the tricky part.
I want to the MacBook to use the same USB drive for its Time Machine backups. However I don't want to connect the volume directly via USB. Instead I have shared the USB volume on the iMac. And now I want to use this shared drive as my backup drive in the MacBook. (Hint: I want to use the same partition both for the iMac backups as well as for the MacBook backups.)
I can mount and select the drive on the MacBook. However Time Machine on the MacBook asks me, if I want to envrypt the backups. Which of course I want to do. But the USB drive and therefore the entire mounted volume is already encrypted (from the iMac).
Now I'm scared to opt in for encryption on the MacBook because I'm afraid the MacBook will again encypt the whole volume. Will that be the case? If so, what will happen on the iMac afterwards? Or will Time Machine recognize, that the volume is already encrypted (encryption passwords are the same of course)?
Or is it not necessary to activate backup encryption on the MacBook since the drive is already encryted? Or will the MacBook somehow manage to write unencrypted backups on an encrypted volume?
I would really appreciate any help to get the backups up and running. In short: I want both Macs to backup to the same drive. And I want both to encrypt the backups (with the same password).
    Regards

That's usually not a good idea; for best results, they should be in separate partitions.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #4 for an explanation, and #22 for setup instructions.

Backups made over a network are placed in a sparse bundle disk image, separate from the backups made directly.  The disk image is like a disk-within-a-disk; it has it's own partition map scheme and format.  So it will not be encrypted unless you tell TM to do so.

Since the backups are separate, they must be encrypted separately.  You may use the same password for both if you want.

  • My Time Machine will no longer back up to my external disk for unknown reasons.  It would not accept my password and said the disk is read-only and damaged.  How can I copy my files to my Mac so I can repair it?

My Time Machine will no longer back up to my external drive for unknown reasons.  It began after a series of power outages (my equipment is protected by a surge protector with battery backup), and was shut down correctly.  Then it began by not recognizing my disk and my Time Machine password, although I am positive it was correct. I tried NUMEROUS times to get into it. It says the disk is damaged and needs to be erased and started over.  How can I back up my files on my Mac so I can do that? I have no other disk to back up to.  I found the files in a folder called "Backups.backupdb", and tried to copy them into a folder, but get the message "The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup."  The "lost+found" folder did copy for me. Will I just have to lose 4 years of backups?

    Hi there,
I have the same issue. Usually hangs after 10K od sometimes after 18MB of backup file.
    Config: iTunes 10.4., Win 7 64bit, iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3.3
I tried all of these without success:
    - deleted backups via iTunes / Preferences
    - deleted backups from sync folder
    - created a new admin user and tried to sync
    - reinstalled iTunes
    - ran all Windows updates, restarted, reinstalled iTunes
    - ran iTunes / Diagnostics (says everything okay, only info which is strange: diag says I am not a admin user, which is not correct)
Nothing helped. Who can help. I hope someone from Apple can take care, as I seem not to be the only one. Actually iTunes is the worst part about iPhone. Hope with iOS 5 and Cloud sync to get rid of iTunes.
    Any hints welcome,
    Cheers,
    Miguel-KA

  • Moving Time Machine Drive from Direct Connect to Network Share

I have a 1 TB external USB 2 drive I use for my Time Machine backup. I'd like to move that drive to a file server and continue backing up to it. The problem appears to be that when backing up to the drive as a network volume, Time Machine wants to create a new sparsebundle for the backup and not use the existing TM backup folder on the drive.
Is it possible to migrate a Time Machine drive from direct connect to network while preserving the backed up data? Thanks!

Depending on what "file server" you're using, that may or may not work reliably. Here's the criteria they must meet: Disks that can be used with Time Machine. And be careful here: just because some 3rd-party hardware claims to support Time Machine doesn't necessarily mean that Apple supports it, or that it will work in all circumstances.

  • Time Machine Volume and Disk Utility

I'm trying to figure out whether or not I can use Disk Utility's Repair Disk command on a Time Machine volume. Time machine is taking a very long time to finalize its backups. I don't know if there are directory issues that need to be addressed or if it's due to the very large size of the directory. I've been using Time Machine on this computer since last January and the Time Machine directory (the disk's catalog of files used by the OS) takes up over 7 GB of disk space! It's so large that DiskWarrior will no longer work on that volume. DiskWarrior, like all 32-bit OS X applications, has a limit of 4 GB. I can't be the only one in this situation. I don't want my Time Machine backup to get hopelessly corrupted and then have to start agin. I'm trying to be proactive about correcting any issues before they become serious.

See my reply to Steve Darden in this Topic.
You should not use Disk Utility in the normal manner. Time Machine uses hard links in a non-standard manner, which will cause normal repair utilities to complain, as Steve is finding.
If you read Time Machine: Troubleshooting backup issues you will see that it only recommends Disk Utility to "Attempt to repair the backup sparsebundle", not the actual Disk Volume itself.

  • Mountain Lion Server App - Issue with Time Machine Volume Selection

Besides my gripes that 10.7 Server or the 10.8 Server app are radically dumbed down versions of what 10.6 Server was capable of, the upgrade to 10.8 from 10.7 unexpectably broke my home time machine backup.
Am quite familiar with the prior server versions as we are still using 10.6 Server on a dozen or so Xserve's, plugging along nicely
This is for our house setup using a Mac Mini with an attached 8TB RAID managing media serving and time machine backups. For simplicity, the array is partitioned as a single volume and simply configuring a file sharing sharepoint as a Time Machine Volume. Simple and easy!
When upgrading to 10.8 and then installing the server app, the upgrade conveniently didn't migrate any file sharing settings, forcing me to set them up again. Easy enough, just took a couple of minutes, except that the share point I used for time machine backups has no more setting to turn it into a Time Machine volume.
As such, under the Time Machine tab, which shows only logical volumes, I simply can't back up to our existing backups.
I suppose I can re-partition the array to create a logical volume for TM backups, but I can't believe that there is no provision to change a sharepoint into a TM volume anymore.
Am trying to stay away from CLI settings as well as that defeats the purpose of the app.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?

  • Can time machine back up on a wireless network

I would like to find a way to back up my Mac other than on an external drive. Besdides Time Capsule, can Time Machine back up onto other wireless networks? Also, is there a preferred, Mac-friendly online backup available (that may or may not use Time Machine)? I was considering using Carbonite.

Time Machine can backup to any device that has Time Machine Extensions.. eg some NAS have this.. or another Mac. Maybe some routers with USB drives.. I have heard of Netgear Mac compatible models.. but never forget.. apple change things around with every OS release and these companies will always be playing catchup.
You may also find it not easy at all to setup Time Machine.. I use a Zyxel NAS single disk model that does support Time Machine.. it has been fine.. but the setup is far more complicated than any TC.
Very few other devices will have TM available .. but if you use a third party software, then they will generally backup to any shared partition or drive in the network.
Buy a second hand TC and modify the power supply.. put in a big hard disk.. you can simply plug it into the existing network.. you will find it hard to get anything cheaper that works as well.. and none that will be as easy to setup.
Fine if you give up on TM.. then whatever external drive the software uses.. no issues.. but TM is designed to only work on HFS+ partition.

  • How to merge existing itunes library with another time machine volume?

    hi all,
i am 2 macs, an iMac and a MacBook - both running Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and both running itunes 9.
is possible to merge the itunes library on the MacBook onto the iMac via my MacBook's Time Machine volume? i do not have my MacBook with me at this moment cos' i have sent it for diagnostic and repair. i have the latest itunes library backups on my MacBook's Time Machine.
hope to hear some valuable pointers. Thank you!

i have never attempted such an operation, so no step-by-step guide !
you will be able to restore the other Mac's library to the iMac. go here and follow the instructions: http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/17.html. restore whatever you need to a temporary location, i.e. the desktop.
if you only want the media files, just restore the iTunes music folder. when restored, use +add to library+ from the file menu or just drag the folder you restored to the +automatically add to iTunes+ folder inside the iTunes folder.
if you also want playlists, playcounts, and ratings, you should restore the entire iTunes folder.
take a look @ PowerTunes. this app should enable you to merge the two libraries.
    good luck !

  • My new macbook pro retina recognizes, but can't transfer data from the Time Machine Volume

I back up my old 2008 MacBook Pro to a Time Machine volume sitting on a very new 2 TB drive that is connected to a Time capsule via USB. I got that new drive from OtherWorld Computing about 2 months ago.
I just received a brand new 2012 MBP (retina).
Pondini's page on setting up a new mac says that it's easiest just to transfer everything over the first itme you start up the new machine. (ref: http://pondini.org/OSX/Setup.html)
So, I took my new 2012 MBP, plugged it into the Time Capsule directly with ethernet (I have the Thunderbolt-to-USB connector).
    Then turn it on.
The 3rd page into the startup sequence gives me a choice to "Transfer Information to this Mac". It offers 4 options
    "From Another Mac"
    "From a Windows PC"
    "From Another Disk"
    "Not Now"
    I chose "From Another Disk"
Then it offers "Select the Source"
The sources are 4 blue icons. 2 of them are backups of other machines, ones that sit on the Time Capsule's internal drive. 1 is a small "media storage" space I saved on the internal drive of the Time Capsule.
The important one is "Macbook Pro backup ("StefanTimeCapsule")
This is the one physically parked in the external USB drive.
So.... I select it. It asks me to log on with user ID and password, and then says an endless "Connecting" message
It never gets to the next menu.
If I arrow "back" in the startup window sequence to the "Select the Source" windo, the 4 blue volumes are again displayed, with the word "Connecting" next to the backup I want, strongly suggesting that the "connection" is never fully established.
Just for fun I plugged that external USB drive directly into the USB port of the new Retina MBP, but it was not recognized at all.
    I tried different ethernet cables.
At this point my thoughts are perhaps
    (a) I need a powered USB hub
    (b) I need to somehow have Apple service the Time Capsule (but for what? I don't know)
I could potentially just transfer from the Old 2008 Macbook Pro Directly, but it seems to me problematic not to be able to access the primary backup.
    Any ideas out there?

A picture of a screen that suggests my new MBP Retina never connects to the "Macbook Pro backup ("StefanTimeCapsule")
This is the one that has the files for the backups procured by the Time Machine program. But it can't "connect"-- You 'll see int he sideways pic (sorry!) that the options STILL says "connecting"
Do i have to make these Time Machines more open to connection?

  • HT5988 I downloaded Mavericks and now my WD Smartware that I use for Time Machine is no longer compatible with this OSX version?  How do I make that unit compatible?  olefromca

I downloaded Mavericks and now my WD Smartware that I use for Time Machine is no longer compatible with this OSX version?  How do I make that unit compatible?  olefromca

I agree entirely, been messing with this since the upgrade to Mavericks but I didn't find it quite as easy as uninstalling the WD smartware as it still operates when you plug the drive back in - I think it gets loaded onto the drive and runs from within (?). The advice from WD was that time machine was faulty and I should contact Apple...thanks guys!
Anyway, for the OP's benefit, this is what I found:
    1. My problem was that time machine couldn't see any further back than before the Mavericks install, but if I opened up and interrogated the WD drive, the old backups were still there.
    2. When TM started doing new backups, it overwrote the ones that it could see, not the oldest ones on the drive. This indicated to
me that the WD software had somehow partitioned off the old backups and excluded that part of the drive from being overwritten. Of course, as the drive was practically full, it meant that any new backups wouldn't fit in the available space.....
    3. The only way I could find to resolve this was to use the disc utility to erase and repartition the external drive. This will obviously remove all of the old files and backups, but I was more concerned about keeping a current profile as backup rather than a load of stuff from months ago.
    4. Anyway, what happens after the eraseure has completed is that you get the WD icon on the desktop, and you're invited to install the software - this means the software has now been deleted. Juts don't reinstall it, just let TM do it's backup and all is well.
Usual disclaimers and warnings about keeping another copy of your system etc. obviously apply, and I know this is a radical move to delete all your old data but it worked for me. I guess I didn't appreciate that you could use the external drive without the software that came with it and just followed the screen guide.
I'm also aware that if you don't want to use TM to do a complete restore and only want to find one old version of a document, this is difficult. However, you can then install the WD software and find the file but you'll then have to do this all again.....

  • Time Machine HD no longer recognized

The hard drive I've been using for Time Machine is no longer being recognized by the OS or Time Machine. I've tested the drive, and it 100% works. I've also tested the USB ports and they work too! I tried plugging it into another Mac and it also ignores the drive. I feel like Time Machine messed up something and now the drive is being ignored. The drive sometimes shows up in the disk utility but never with the drive name so I can't verify the disk or anything.

what do you mean the drive 100% works? if it doesn't show up in disk utility and doesn't mount that is clearly not the case. if you can't repair the drive and it doesn't mount you have to reformat it. this will wipe the drive of course.

  • After having the logic board replaced, Time Machine will no longer backup my computer to the same backup files as before.

After having the logic board replaced due to bad NVidia chip, my Time Machine will no longer backup my computer to the current backup. Is there a way to reset something to get Time Machine to continue to use the same backup files as before for this laptop?

As far as TM is concerned you have a new computer, so it will make a new backup. If you don't have the space for both backups then erase your backup drive before backing up the computer.
