Time Machine vs. NDAS+MacFuse+NTFS-3G

I just connected my NDAS -enabled external drive, NTFS formatted, through my home LAN to my brand new MacBook Pro 17 Unibody and through the last *Ximeta driver* + MacFuse + NTFS-3G I can easily read and write on it.
Unfortunately, *Time Machine* does not see it!!!
Any advice that does not require to format the drive?
I have too many data on it to format it...
Thanks in advance,
Adolfo

A day or so ago a new SATA drive enclosure by IOCELL was announced. It uses USB, eSATA, and Gigabit networking via an NDAS driver for Mac that comes with the product. Perhaps this could solve the problem or even replace the solution you're trying to make work. Best of all, no hacking required.
That may work to a degree. It may do backups, and you may be able to use +Enter Time Machine+ to browse and restore from them.
A future OSX update may, of course, render that useless.
Worse, you *will not* be able to use that setup to restore your entire system from backups when your hard drive fails.
That procedure requires booting from your Leopard Install disc and using the installer on it to locate and restore from your backups. Since the special driver isn't on the Apple Install disc, those backups will be invisible.

  • Time Machine under Lion appears to ignore Paragon NTFS external drives

Have Macbook pro with 2 external drives, one HFS+ formatted as my Time Machine drive, and another NTFS drive with the bulk of my user data (photos and audio files).
To improve NTFS read performance and enable writing, I have been using Paragon NTFS for about 2 months very successfully.
Time machine was also working to backup the NTFS drive under Snow Leopard, with no issues.
However, just moved to Lion, and one of the items I noticed is that the NTFS drive (with all my "valuable" data) is now being ignored by Time Machine. If I enter the time machine Preferences...Options... the NTFS volume is listed in the items excluded from backup. I can remove it from the list, and click save, yet if I return back to Options the drive has re-appeared in the excluded items list.
Is this a bug or intentional? This is a huge drawback, as I really didn't want to migrate everything off this huge drive just to re-format it because of this.

Had similar problem.  Upgraded to Lion, couldnt read any NTFS drives!  Turns out old NTFS drivers from Paragon dont work in Lion, so had to buy new one.  That also didnt work.  Eventually followed discussion thread on Paragon support, deleted (manually) the offending drivers (UFS/NTFS) from Library, uninstalled Paragon.
Could now see NTFS drives R/O.
Reinstalled Paragon driver, now cant see drives in Finder but can in Disk Utility.  Did a 'repair' on drives in Disk Utility and hey presto! it's all back where it should be.
Now my time machine has stopped working, don't know if they're related.

  • Using Time Machine with a network Drive

I recently bought a WD My Book Live network drive to use as my Time Machine backup. I was previously using a USB external HD for Time Machine with no problems. I have set up the new network drive but when I go in to Time Machine to select it as the drive to back up to, it is not showing up. The only drive I see is my old USB external HD. I have the latest firmware for the network drive and I am running Mac OSX10.5.8. Any suggestions?

If you bought the WD in a USB enclosure it probably came formatted with NTFS (Windows). Time Machine can't use NTFS drives or SMB (Windows) network shares as a backup destination because that format does not allow the proper permissions to be set. If this is the case with your drive, open Disk Utility and reformat your new drive (NOT you system drive!!) with HFS+ aka 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' and then the drive should show up as a target selection in Time Machine.

  • External hard drive problem after time machine [help!]

    Hi there! Please help me.
Last week, I partition a 320 G Samsung external hard drive into a 300G volume (format: Mac OS extended (journaled)) for Time Machine, and other 20G NTFS for data exchange between Mac and Windows. At the same time, I stored 40G IMPORTANT data in the 300G volume.
However, I plugged in the drive. My MBP MC374 managed to mount the 20G NTFS while the 300G is missing!
I opened up Disk Utility, it shows:
Please help! The data matters a lot to me!!

Specifically you screen shot does not show anything.
    Ciao.

It's only 4 MB. Perhaps you should try again. If your satellite broadband can't handle that, perhaps you need something better, like 3G or dialup.
What is best plan.. <?> get a new HDD to exclusively Time machine to OR install Bootcamp and hope for the best...?
Time Machine requires HFS+ to work. It will create an HFS+ disk image when used with a server. For an external hard drive, I suggest you partition it into 2 volumes, one being HFS+ and the other NTFS.

  • How do you connect an NTFS hard drive for time machine???

So I have this 1.5 TB hard drive connected like so:
1.5 TB HDD ==========> Wifi Router (configured to be accessible using FTP, and SMB, also able to connect using HTTP, but haven't tried)
                           (USB)                 ||

                                                     V
To my macbook pro (which logs onto this NTFS hard drive just fine and shows it as a server)
So that's how it's setup.  I can access the files and everything just fine as a server, which is all peachy.  But I want to use Time Machine.  So here's how I got my hard drive connected in the first place, I followed these steps from OSX Daily:
Map a network drive to Mac OS X
This method maps a network drive that will disappear if the network connection drops or if you reboot your Mac:
From the Mac OS X Finder, hit Command+K to bring up the ‘Connect to Server’ window
Enter the path to the network drive you want to map, ie: smb://networkcomputer/networkshare and click ‘Connect’
Enter your login/password and click “OK” to mount the network drive
The drive will now appear on your desktop and in the Finder window sidebar
Did everything it says right up there, and worked like a charm.  Plus I used this command that allows Time Machine to see my hard drive and supposedly make it usable, if you want to know it, tell me and I'll put it on here, if you don't need to I'm to lazy to find it
anyway, I went to Time Machine, selected my hard drive (yay!  It wasn't there before) and all seems just fine.  Then it hangs on the "Making Backup Disk Usable" bit.  I did lots of searches and it seems to be a problem with something like bundles or whatever, but I can't figure it out.  Help?

Why do you want to use a NTFS format that's Microsoft's for protecting your data with TimeMachine a Apple software?
Doesn't make much sense. Just format the drive in Disk Utility HFS+Journaled like TimeMachine expects instead of having to use workarounds as NFTS isn't a native Mac format.
Select hard drive name, click Erase tab, click HFS+Journaled, give it a name and click Erase...
If you want the drive wiped of all data, then use Security option Zero erase. (takes a lot longer)
I think you need to read up on TimeMachine

  • Time Machine hoses external NTFS partition?

A friend of mine, a fresh convert from WIndows, attached her external 1TB NTFS-formatted (Windows Vista) disc, wanting to transfer files from it to the internal HD.
For some reason Time Machine appropriated the drive and placed a Time Machine partition on it, taking up close to the whole space (1TB). I assume Time Machine in a friendly manner asked if she wanted to make backups to this external drive without having some kind of protocol on informing the user that this will overwrite existing information.
It was only when Time Machine was about to make a backup writing to this partition she mentioned it for me via chat and I immediately told her to stop Time Machine from doing that. She then shared her screen with me so I could investigate, which I did with Disk Utility after turning Time Machine off completely. It shows the Time Machine partition on the disk, but no NTFS partition is acknowledged.
What I assume have happened is that for whatever reason OS X wasn't able to see the NTFS partition and instead treated the disk as an unformatted device. Then Time Machine put a partition on it.
When doing so, I hope Time Machine didn't write zeros all over the disc and it's a good chance the files in the NTFS-partition is still there. And if it didn't write over the NTFS-partition part, that may also be there.
However, as far I know the NTFS-partition should be visible in Disk Utility. Which is isn't. That's a bit scary.
My next course of action is to use a file recovery application from a Windows machine on this drive in hope that files can be rescued. As we don't have access to an empty 1TB drive it would be even better, if the Time Machine partition could be just removed and the NTFS-partition repaired or reinstated.
Any ideas on how to proceed?

    Yes, similar to this one:

What I assume have happened is that for whatever reason OS X wasn't able to see the NTFS partition and instead treated the disk as an unformatted device. Then Time Machine put a partition on it.
It reformatted it. The NTFS partition is gone. Time Machine can only back up to an HFS+ journalled volume.
When doing so, I hope Time Machine didn't write zeros all over the disc and it's a good chance the files in the NTFS-partition is still there. And if it didn't write over the NTFS-partition part, that may also be there.
Correct. A +data recovery+ app should be able to recover most of it.

  • Time machine With 2 partitions - 1 NTFS

Hi there – I was wondering if it would be possible to partition a 1 TB external hard drive, 500 GB HFS+ , the other 500GB NTFS and use the HFS+ part for time machine. Also, if this is possible, could I also encrypt just that partition with FileVault or does it require the entire drive to be encrypted? Thanks!

Yes this is all possible. Though the NTFS volume will be read only on the mac.
Set up your partitions then encrypt the partition/volume from the finder.
Control click the partition, Choose Encrypt.
The finder will ask you to set a password.
Don't forget it or you are reformatting!!!
    Hope this helps.

  • I just partitioned my NTFS drive with Time Machine: Help!

I'm back to using a Mac after 15 years so I really messed up.  I have a MacBook Pro (15" mid 2009) 2.66 Intel Core 2 Duo with OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 and a Seagate 4TB External that was formatted using Windows 7 OS, I think NTFS. I traded for the MacBook Pro and they were using Time Machine to backup.
I started Time Machine thinking I could just copy the data on the drive I was already using and zipped through the wizard like an idiot when it asked me if I wanted to erase the IOMEGA_HD  not the Seagate 4TB External I said sure and it popped up saying it was partitioning the Seagate 4TB External.  I freaked out and pulled the USB cable out of the laptop making a bad situation possibly worse.
Now here it sits with a Mac OS partition that's unreadable from either a Mac or a PC.  I don't want to do anything to further damage it before I asked some experts how to tackle this.  If I left anything out please ask, I'll be watching this thread closely. Thanks in advance for any help guys!

I think you probably wiped the partition table and that your data is still there and can be recovered.
As I said, search on various Linux forums. Any useful way of recovering your data there will very likely be available for Mac OS X. The only exception is that, if you have to rebuild the partition table, which was in NTFS, it may not be supported by any "authenticate" Mac OS X applications (i.e., what you will find in the App Store -- meanwhile, you'll get "scary" warnings from OS X when you try to run any third-party software from the Internet -- I can't tell you how to respond to those or my post may get disregarded) because it (NTFS) is a proprietary format of Microsoft. However, tons of people running Linux had to first conquer Windows (and NTFS!), so I'm sure you'll find a solution in that realm. And if there isn't a port for it for OS X, then at least you have a free solution, if you can manage to get Linux running on something (even a Virtual Machine within OS X, such as VirtualBox).

  • Partition NTFS External Drive to work with Time Machine

    Hello Apple Support Community,
I use a 1TB External NTFS hard drive to backup the contents of my Desktop Windows computer. I was wondering if I could use Disk Utility (or another tool) to partition the external hard drive so I could use TIme Machine on it. That way, not only would I have my desktop backed up, but also my laptop.
I'd delegate around 700GB for my Windows Desktop and 300GB for my MacBook Pro.
Is this possible? Or do I need to erase the entire external harddrive and backup everything all over again?
    Thanks,
    David

    Requirements to use Time Machine
Time Machine is only available with Leopard or later.
External FireWire or USB 2.0 drive
    Time Capsule
Drive shared by a Mac running 10.5 or later using File Sharing
Drive shared by a Mac running 10.5 Server
SAN volume managed by Apple's Xsan file system
A TM drive must be partitioned with either APM (PPC) or GUID (Intel) and formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
Clearly you cannot use Time Machine with an NTFS formatted backup drive. Furthermore, Disk Utility cannot partition an NTFS formatted drive. In my opinion you should use separate drives for separate backups.

  • Time Machine working great but now want to back up an NTFS USB HD also

Got my Time Machine working well backing up my whole system onto a 1TB LaCie USB Hard drive formatted: Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)
However I regularly use a 500GB LaCie which is formatted NTFS (where all of my MP3s are located on for iTunes) and would like this to be included in the Time Machine Backups.
I installed NTFS-3G to make this data accessable and editable etc.
After a few hours of trying, I still cannot seem to get this drive to backup. I made sure it wasnt an exception in the Options Tab.
Anyone know what it is I am doing wrong?
    Cheers
    James

This is from CCC's Help section:
    +Supported configurations+
HFS formatted partition or hard drive+
+Hard drives in Firewire, eSATA and USB enclosures including Firewire-based iPods*+
+CCC will not backup directly to optical media (e.g. CD-ROM or DVD-ROM)+
+CCC is supported only on machines that officially support Mac OS X Tiger (or higher)+
    and:
+Mac OS X is installed on an HFS+ filesystem. The HFS+ filesystem defines many types of metadata that describe non-data attributes of your files. Creation date, access control lists, permissions and ownership, Finder flags, and extended attributes are among the various metadata types defined in the HFS+ standard. To adequately back up all of your files and their associated metadata, CCC requires that your backup volume is also formatted as HFS.
+Additionally, Macintoshes can only boot from hard drives partitioned with either the Apple Partition Map (APM) scheme (PowerPC- or Intel-based Macs) or the GUID Partition Table (GPT) scheme (Intel-based Macs). The hard drive icons that you see in the Finder are volumes. The partition scheme of a hard drive describes how volumes are physically defined on the hard disk. Every hard drive has exactly one partition scheme and at least one volume. When you "partition" a hard drive, you simply create multiple volumes on that hard drive.+
+See the section of CCC's documentation labeled "Preparing a hard drive for use with Carbon Copy Cloner" (in the "General overview of the features of CCC" section) for step-by-step instructions for partitioning and formatting a new hard drive for use with CCC.+
I use it or SuperDuper to create a bootable clone; however, when I just want to copy certain files, I just use the drag 'n drop method - it just works.

  • Time Machine - NTFS formatted external drive - reformat? If yes, how?

I have a USB external hard drive which is NTFS formatted. It shows up on my mac but Time Machine does not show it when I try to "Choose Backup Disc".
I suspect that the NTFS format is a problem. If so, how do I reformat this disc so it will work with Time Machine?

You are correct. You can read, but not write to an NTFS formated drive.
You can use Disk Utility to reformat the drive (and partition it if you like). Disk Utility is located in the Utilities folder, which is inside the Applications folder.
In Disk Utility, on the left side, select the external disk. Then select the Erase Tab. Give the disk a name and choose "Mac OS Exteneded (journaled)". I also recommend you take the extra step of zeroing out the drive by clicking on the "Security Options" button, and then choosing the second option down.
now you should be ready to go.
After you reformat the drive, you can partition it.
I have one partition for Time Machine, and one for me to save other files.
The Time Machine partition should be equal to or greater than the drive (or drives) it is backing up.
    hope this helps

  • When is Apple going to fix the problem with slow Time Machine backups with Mavericks?

I have been with Apple tech support and they got my Time Machine working by doing a spotlight re-indexing and a safe boot.  This worked for about three days and I am back to very slow backups.  It is impossible for Time Machine to back up every hour when it takes six hours to do the back up.  I don't want to take hours to re-index with spotlight all the time.  I think taking six hours to do an incremental backup is a bit much.  I see that there are many people that have this trouble and it all started with an upgrade to Mavericks.  The question is when is Apple going to fix this problem of slow backups with Time Machine for Mavericks.  I have wasted more time than I care to.  I am think of going back to Windows.  I need good solid backups of my machine and Apple has taken it away with the new Mavericks. Oh, I am using the UBS 3.0 connection so the drive should not be the problem.  Also this has occurred in about the last five months, so I am not sure this problem was in the original Marvericks.

Allen Thanks for your reply.  All I can say is several months ago Time Machine quit working in a reasonable manner.  Right now I have a Time Machine backup that has been running all night and still has three hours to go to backup 6 GB of data.  I am using a OWC 1.5 TB drive connected directly to my MacBook with a USB 3.0 connection.  In the resent past I have added Dropbox, GoogleDrive and a MAMP server on which I am using a program called Learning With Text from Sourceforge.  There have been a lot of questions on the forum about people having very slow Time Machine back ups, so it appears to be a general problem.  I should also state I am getting this very slow backup after doing the Spotlight re-indexing and the Safe Restart procedure that was told to me by apple support.  I have a 750 GB drive in my MacBook Pro which I am constantly trying to keep at a 5% level of free space.  This might be a problem also.  However, I am working on a lot of things and like to have a lot of things on my drive.  Also the heavily loaded drive has not be a problem in the past.  This slow backup business started about three months ago, so something has happen in a very short time period.  Now it seems even the procedure that Apple support gave me is not working.  Currently I am in China and it is difficult to interact with Apple support to solve this problem, but because I am in China having my computer backed up is critical. I have run the EtreCheck and am attaching the results below. I would appreciate any suggestions.  If necessary I will clear out more of my hard drive if that appears to be a solution.  The Time Machine drive was recently reformed so I only have a few backups on it.  I also don't run the Time Machine all the time as I don't want multi-hour backups running all the time.  I run it every few days.

  • WD World Edition 1TB as a Time Machine drive with Mac and XP?

I plan on buying a WD World Edition 1TB to use as my Time Machine drive over wireless netowrk at home for my 320GB MBP.
My wife has a Windows XP PC so I would like to partition the 1TB into maybe 600MB for me and 400MB for her.
First of all, will this type of partition work with TM and also, what format should the WD Drive be? I have installed MacFuse and NTFS-3G on my MBP.
Any info from someone who does something simalr would be greatly appreciated.
    Dave

    That sounds fine.
So in theory, the WD comes with no partitions so I could set the whole thing up on the XP machine and set the partition sizes, then go the Mac, connect to the partition I've set aside for myself and select it, at which point the Mac will format it to HFS and start backing up?
You say the Mac is oblivious to partitions so what would stop it formatting the entire drive to HFS?
Ideally I'd like to get the WD software to backup the XP machine to the XP partition and TM to backup the Mac to the HFS partition. Do you know if this is likely to work? Hopefuilly someone with this drive will be able to answer as well.
Thanks for your help so far
