Time Machine wants admin password when restoring in a standard account

I've just migrated from a PowerMac G5 (running Tiger) to a new iMac. The PowerMac had a single admin account only. On the new iMac this has been migrated over and changed to a standard account and an extra admin account has been added.
I've set up Time Machine with an external drive and it did the 1st full backup OK from within the standard account. However, every time I try to restore a file using Time Machine it asks for the name and password of an administrator! If I give the admin name and password the restore completes OK, but I can't stop it asking for admin credentials each time.
I have checked that all files in the standard account are owned by that account (I used chown -R in Terminal to be sure!). So why does Time Machine want an admin password when restoring a file owned by the standard account back into the same standard account?!

Peruse Best Practices and Setup new Mac; then, consider starting over, reinstalling the OS and using the setup assistant to do the migration, resulting in one admin user account and no conflicts. Then, reinstall any optional software so you're back to the factory condition and a properly migrated state.

    Unfortunately when Adobe products are restored from backup, especial CS4 and especially Mac, it breaks licensing.
    There is a python script included in the license recovery kit that should work if you are familiar with Terminal.
    If not, you must reinstall your CS4 suite.  You don't need to delete your preferences, so it should be the same as before.

    I had to restore my system from a Time Machine backup because of a recurring problem. Now Time machine wants to backup my entire drive as if I'm actually starting over. I've got 300GB left on my backup drive and this complete backup will use 133GB of it. I have had to do this in the past but I don't remember that Time Machine wanted to do a complete backup before. Is there something I can do to prevent it?

    Hi, my Time Machine wants to start a new, full backup, instead of continuing with the existing one on the time Capsule.
    Looking a the Troubleshooting guide, I've found the following piece of info, which is, as 99% of the times with the troubleshooting guides, totally useless to resolve my problem...
    Message: Time Machine starts a new, full backup instead of a smaller incremental backup
    There are three reasons why this may occur:
    You performed a full restore.
    Your Computer Name (in Sharing preferences) was changed--when this happens, Time Machine will perform a full backup on its next scheduled backup time.
    If you have had a hardware repair recently, contact the Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store that performed your repair. In the meantime, you can still browse and recover previous backups by right-clicking or Control-clicking the Time Machine Dock icon, and choosing "Browse Other Time Machine disks" from the contextual menu.
    It should be noted (hence the uselessness of the guide) that:
    -I haven't performed ANY full restore
    - I havent changed my computer name
    - My computer has not had ANY repair, much less a hardware repair. Neither recently, nor in the 9 months I've owned it.
    Which puts me back to square one, with the marginal improvement that now I have a way of browsing my old backups.
    In the event I decide to start all over again, will there be a way for me to "sew" the two backup files?
    Or will I always have to go the silly way around?
    Anybody has any idea?

    no, that doesn't have anything to do with my problem.
    Just look at the image below.
    Time Machine thinks that the disk I've always used to do my backups has none of them.
    If I open the disk with Finder, obviously they are where they should be.
    It is even possible to navigate them as per the instruction reported above, but even following Pondini's advice #s B5 and B6 (which are more applicable to my problem) didn't solve the problem.
    Actually, not being a coder, I'm always scared of doing more damage than good when I have a Terminal window open.
    My question is: how is it possible that Apple hasn't thought of some kind of user command to tell the idiotic Time Machine software that a hard disk backup is a hard disk backup, no matter what?
    Estremely frustrating and annoying: I'm wasting HOURS in trying to find a solution to a problem that should not have arisen in the first place...

    Use Migration Assistant to migrate your previous account from the Time Machine backup. Migration Assistant is in your Utilities folder.
    Read: OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks
    When doing so, select your previous User account but do not migrate "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices. Subsequent to using Migration Assistant, you will need to reinstall any essential software you may require.
    "Essential software" means programs that have been verified by their developers to be compatible with Mavericks, and specifically excludes junk such as "cleaners", "boosters", "optimizers", or ill-conceived "anti-virus" garbage. Install that essential software from original sources such as the App Store, developer's websites, or original optical media, and not from untrustworthy download aggregator hosting sites such as C net dot com, Mac update dot com, etc, and not from backups that may have been corrupted.
    Be aware that if you already created an account with the same name as the one you want to migrate, Migration Assistant will offer to rename the account it's about to create. In other words if you're already logged in as "Tara", and you want to migrate the account named Tara from the Time Machine backup, it will offer to name the migrated account Tara1. Migration Assistant will tell you what it's going to do, but the warning is easy to overlook. Therefore you might consider creating another, temporary account with Administrator privileges, and deleting the one you created subsequent to erasing your Mac and installing Mavericks.
    For those instructions read: OS X Mavericks: Set up users on your Mac. Follow the instructions under "Add a user". Be sure to select “Allow user to administer this computer.”
    Log in under that temporary account, then use Migration Assistant. Confirm everything works as you expect, then you can delete the temporary account.

    Ok so i need to restore a hard drive with time machine. im going to be wiping my imac HD for a fresh install, hopefully things will run a little quicker. its seeming a little laggy these days. what im worried about with time machine though is that its going to restore all the little fragments of past installed/uninstalled programs and certain logs and settings ect.. the things that are currently bogging down the system. i know that time machine has a list of exclusions of what it doesnt restore.. but do i have to worry at all about time machine installing these things that i dont want? i would much rather just manually restore the system if this is going to be the case.
    also, if i would manually restore the system from the time machine drive, i dont think i can just drag and drop backup folders from time machine and then pick and choose individual files and folders can i?
    any help would be much appreciated!
    just a heads up.. please dont reply if you're giving me your opinion because you enjoyed your experience with time machine restoration. im looking for fact and reality of what time machine does and does not restore. thank you

    If you tell Time Machine to do a full system restore, yes, it will do that. With certain exceptions, such as system work files, trash, most caches and logs, it will put your system back just as it was. That's it's purpose, after all.

    Really? See the pink box in #11 Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. Actually, it would be worse, if you don't use +Migration Assistant+ for your data.

    You can't restore OSX that way. You can copy your data, but that may not work in all cases, and you'll likely have all sorts of permissions problems, as OSX will think the backups belong to a different user.

    I had the same problem with Time Machine and solved it by enabling "Enable Power Nap" in Energy Saver:
    System Preferences...
    Energy Saver
    Restore Defaults
    Check "Enable Power Nap: While sleeping, your Mac can back up using Time Machine and periodically check for new email, calendar, and other iCloud updates."

    I lost my wireless connection to my backup drive for a short time.  Now time machine wants to do a full backup.  It doesn't know that I have previous backups.  How do I point it to the previous backups so that time machine continues to do incremental backups rather than doing another full backup.

    I did some more reading and I found that Time Machine would find the older backups once a new backup is completed.  The backup ended up being a little larger than previous backups (2.65 GB vs typical incremental backups of several MB's)  but when it completed, time machine updated the last backup time/date and the oldest backup time/date properly.  So I guess, I don't have a problem.

    There should be two sparse bundles on the TC, one for each Mac.  If you click the TC in a Finder sidebar, you should see something like this (in Column View):
    If you see the sparse bundle for the iMac there, but not on the window where you do a full system restore (after starting from your Recovery HD or OSX Install disc), they may be corrupted (especially if your iMac was failing at the time of the last backup).
    Try repairing those backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
    Then try the full restore again, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14.  Note that if you suspect problems on the most recent backup, you might want to select an earlier one.

    Also yes.
    Directly-connected external drives (ie, USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt) are not backed-up by default.  You must remove them from the exclusion list in Time Machine Preferences > Options to get them backed-up.  (Network drives cannot be backed-up.)
    And they must be formatted for a Mac -- any variation of Mac OS Extended.
    If the drive is connected, you can browse or restore normally -- just go to the folder or document in question and Enter Time Machine.
    If the drive is not connected, it's a bit different.  See #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

    Is there any way of stopping Time Machine from making backups when I have Final Cut Pro running?
    Each time TM is about to prepare backup, FCP goes down in performance like an ant in maple syrup.
    Quite annoying. And sure, I can live with no backups made during work. (I hit Command-S every minute instead... ;-))

    You may have something else going on, that doesn't seem to be a problem at other times.
    First, see if the size of the backups makes sense, given the changes you've made. If in doubt, Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. That will show the duration of each backup at the top, and the total size in the "Copied" messages.
    If that seems large, see #D4 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
    If the size seems reasonable, but the amount of time is not, see #D2 in the same place; any or all of the suggestions there may speed them up.
