Time Machine:  When it's backing up, can't open new apps/shutdown/restart

Running Snow Leopard. I just did a MS Office 2008 Service pack 3 upgrade. And noticed that while Time Machine is backing up, I can no longer open any new apps or shutdown/restart the macbook. Nothing responds anymore.
Related issued: If it's been sleeping, I can't type anything to unlock my computer.
In either situation, I have to hold down the power button to shut down and restart. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

  • Time Machine, when I stop back up at the menu bar...will files be deleted?

    Hey Forum,
I am using snow leopard on my macbook and I just started using time machine, today i switch off auto backup and manually press backup at the menu bar, then I realised that i did not backup only for a day and when the time machine finished calculating the changes, it states that 49.22GB needs to be backup(i let it run for 2 mins), thus, I wanted to re-calculate, I press stop backup and then start backup again, but then it is still 49.22GB. So I thought that it is normal and continue backuping. So, forum, will the 1st backup(the one i said run for 2 mins) be deleted when I stop backup? And Is it normal to backup 49.22Gb in just one day when i dont backup?
    In summary:
    1. Will the 1st backup be deleted?
2.Is it normal to backup 49.22GB in a day without backuping?
    Thanks.

If you mean the one you interrupted, yes, sort of. Time Machine will automatically "recover" it the next time it does a backup. It's sort of suspended now -- since it's not complete, you won't see it in the Time Machine "Star Wars" display.
2.Is it normal to backup 49.22GB in a day without backuping?
    Probably not.
How much data is on your internal HD?
Did the first backup complete normally?
Have you done a full restore, moved or renamed a very large folder or folders, or are you using any virtualization software, such as Parallels or VMware?

  • Can not open new apps downloaded on my iphone, can not open new apps downloaded on my iphone

i have downloaded new apps fr apple store. after syncing it with my iphone, all new apps downloaded can not be open.. help

Here are some suggestions for getting the best results from this site.
Create a user profile that accurately reflects the type of hardware you're using and your version of OS X, or include that information in your first message.
Give details of the problem. A remark such as "X doesn't work" conveys no useful information. If X did work, you wouldn't be here. Instead, you should post something like this: "I did A; I expected B; but I got C." Include the complete, verbatim text of any error messages you saw, and specify where you saw them: in an application window, a CrashReporter window, a log, or whatever.
Also describe the steps you’ve taken yourself, if any, to try to resolve the issue. If the problem is of recent origin, did you make any changes to your setup just before you first noticed it? Is the problem reproducible or intermittent? That is, does it always manifest itself when you take a certain action, or only at unpredictable times?
Before posting, ask yourself whether it’s likely that you are the the only person ever to have had this problem. If not, search the discussions for answered questions similar to yours. If you found any pertinent information, but it didn't help, give details.

  • Can Time Machine be used to back up my server?

I've got 10.6 Server running on an Xserve.  I was told that Time Machine can't be used on a Server, but I do have the TM icon on my dock. Does TM work with server or not - are its backups flawed in some way for Server?

    Michael
Whoever told you that you can't use Time Machine on OSX Server was not wholly wrong or wholly correct. As ever it all depends on what roles you want your Server to perform. It is not recommended to use Time Machine to back up OSX Server if it's an OD Master and/or a Mail Server and/or running a SQL Database. This is because those databases are more likely to be constantly changing - think about it. Most people would say the 'sensible' thing to do is to stop the Services - or curtail in some way access to those databases during the backup - effect the backup and then re-start the Services or allow access to the databases again. This is something Time Machine does not know how to do. As ever it's not so much backing up that's the problem. The problem generally arises if you have to recover data after a Server or Drive failure. More often than the recovered databases exhibit all sorts of problems and corruption. Probably because the databases were 'mangled' by Time Machine when they were backed up.
If all you want from your server is simple file sharing, iCal, iChat and Web Services then you can use Time Machine and safely recover from the backups. In my experience this works for me consistently well. As ever YMMV.
    HTH?

When I try to set up Time Machine, there are no back up disks displayed.  Therefore, I cannot turn on Time Machine.  How can I fix this?

Thanks - let it finish, but zero out data is unnecessary. That option is intended to thoroughly erase previously recorded data so that it cannot be recovered without sophisticated data recovery techniques.
Case sensitive is OK but I suggest you simply select Mac OS X Extended since "case sensitive" may complicate things for you in the future, should it be necessary to restore files to a case-ignorant volume.
Once it finishes, make sure it appears as a selectable option in Time Machine. If it does your problems are solved, but consider using Disk Utility and reformatting it. This time don't worry about zeroing unused space, and select Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). It will only take a few seconds this time.
For a more thorough description read Apple Support Communites contributor Pondini's FAQ: http://pondini.org/TM/5.html Read the pink box regarding the subject of case sensitivity.

    NicholasLiban -
When you use the Lion restore as described, it does a fresh install on the hard drive that you can select at the beginning of the process.  This provides a complete install of the very latest version of Lion, including the recovery partition.  The drive that you choose for the installation destination winds up like what you would have on a brand new computer from Apple.

  • I backup to an external hdd with Time Machine, when it ran out of space it did not delete old backups, now my internal hdd says its full when before it had heaps of space. I have searched for extra files but cant find any. Can anyone help, please.

I backup to an external hdd with Time Machine, when it ran out of space it did not delete old backups, now my internal hdd says its full when before it had heaps of space. I have searched for extra files but cant find any. Can anyone help, please.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight as described here. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can also use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • My Time Machine will no longer back up to my external disk for unknown reasons.  It would not accept my password and said the disk is read-only and damaged.  How can I copy my files to my Mac so I can repair it?

My Time Machine will no longer back up to my external drive for unknown reasons.  It began after a series of power outages (my equipment is protected by a surge protector with battery backup), and was shut down correctly.  Then it began by not recognizing my disk and my Time Machine password, although I am positive it was correct. I tried NUMEROUS times to get into it. It says the disk is damaged and needs to be erased and started over.  How can I back up my files on my Mac so I can do that? I have no other disk to back up to.  I found the files in a folder called "Backups.backupdb", and tried to copy them into a folder, but get the message "The volume has the wrong case sensitivity for a backup."  The "lost+found" folder did copy for me. Will I just have to lose 4 years of backups?

    Hi there,
I have the same issue. Usually hangs after 10K od sometimes after 18MB of backup file.
    Config: iTunes 10.4., Win 7 64bit, iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3.3
I tried all of these without success:
    - deleted backups via iTunes / Preferences
    - deleted backups from sync folder
    - created a new admin user and tried to sync
    - reinstalled iTunes
    - ran all Windows updates, restarted, reinstalled iTunes
    - ran iTunes / Diagnostics (says everything okay, only info which is strange: diag says I am not a admin user, which is not correct)
Nothing helped. Who can help. I hope someone from Apple can take care, as I seem not to be the only one. Actually iTunes is the worst part about iPhone. Hope with iOS 5 and Cloud sync to get rid of iTunes.
    Any hints welcome,
    Cheers,
    Miguel-KA

    Thanks Andy,
I wish I could have told my sister about this as she could not open my homepage back before my new iWeb site. She now can open my site without the yet in case denial window does appear = I thank you.
I think my iWeb site works as Noone has said otherwise from any platform etc...

I do agree that should not have to be a consideration for any users so i agree that it would be great if Apple could allow simplicity to run seemlessly.
I have had this problem since Homepage, and here is
what has worked for me. I send out the link, and
then for PC users I send the link with "<" after the address (without quotation
    marks. e.g., <http://site.com>).
I also put a note that if that doesn't work, to just
copy and paste the link into a browser. With that I
have only had 1 person say they still can't open.
Everyone else gets it to work.
It's a lot to do and seems like a hassle, but you get
    used to it.
    Hope this helps!

PS - APPLE! When are you going to fix this??! It
seems like such a small thing yet you guys have been
    stumped for YEARS on this!

  • Time Machine deleted all the back up files on my TimeCapsule

My computer required an erase and install. I was using 10.5.8. I reinstalled the OS but I did not do a restore from my Time Machine when I first booted it up. However, I wanted to continue to use my time machine back up (basically continue to add files to the existing backup), but it would not allow me to point to the existing Time Machine back up.
As a result, Time Machine tried to create a new backup folder. I thought this would be fine, and that I would worry about why I could not use the current back up file on my Time Capsule later on. Well, Time Machine has deleted my old Time Capsule and all the information that was inside it and now I have only a back up of one day.
What happened? How could Time Machine over write a backup that I had previously?

I updated to 10.5.8 and then I got a blue screen. I tried to do an erase and install and then I could not get beyond the grey screen. I took it in to the genius bar and had to get them to start things working again. They used their external drive to boot me up from 10.5.8.
I did not use my time machine backups to put my information back on my computer. I used the files for documents movies and photos which I had dragged and dropped on to a USB external HD (A Western Digital Passport).
I did not want to lose all the incremental past back ups on my Time Capsule (the white 1 TB box with the apple logo - definitely a time capsule). I wanted to keep using the old time machine back ups in case I ever needed to restore an odd file here and there.
Well, that day has come and I can not restore from my Time Capsule. I actually deleted this entry (albeit too late) and I have realized I do have 700 GB backed up.
You were right, if I do #17 I can access the old "sequence" of back ups, I suppose that TM thinks that I have a new computer after my erase and install.
So when I click and hold on TM in the dock I can browse other time machine disks. However, whenever I try do do a restore, computer hangs and I can't actually use the back up.
How can I get my MBP to go back to the old sequence TM files? If I go to system preferences, it says that my oldest back up is January 8, 2009. That would make me think TM machine knows those files are there. BUT! When I click on TM in the dock and I start TM, when I get to the Star Wars style screen where you can see the windows go back in time, it only has backups as far as yesterday.
So ultimately, my question is, how do I permanently get back to that old sequence of back ups and why does it always hang on the restore?
Thanks so much for your help - my lost files depend on it!
