Time Machine:  Where can I find the "Gear" menu?

When I open TM there is a row of restore points but I don't see the options to delete old back ups, etc.

gears menu is in finder's toolbar and it does look like a gear. once you click on it in TM you'll see the options to delete backups.

  • I need to restore my email settings using time machine but can't find the mail.plist in the backups

Hi, i can find my mail.plist by opening library/preferences holding the option key, but I can't replicate this when i'm searching for the same file in time machine. I have somehow deleted my mail settings and am trying to restore using time machine. Any ideas? Thanks

In Finder under Library/Preferences/ i found the following which I think is what you are looking for:
I "highlighted" this file in Finder FIRST, and then leaving Finder Open, I also opened Time Machine and when TM opened, Finder was displayed in it as seen above and I could then select dates going back to Restore this file from just fine.
    Hope this helps

  • Time Machine: How can I find the size of each individual backup?

When I look in the Time Machine external hard drive under Backups.backupdb, I see all of the backups. I also see the total space remaining on the Time Machine. However, I would like to know the size of each individual backup file. Is there a way to get this information? It does not show in the "Get Info" window of the backup.
    Thanks

The question is ambiguous, because a snapshot may consist almost entirely of references to other snapshots and thus take up almost no space on the backup volume. There is a shell command that enables you to see how much data was copied from the sources in the last snapshot. An example of how to use it is below.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    tmutil compare
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
Files that you’ve excluded from backup, or that are excluded automatically, are ignored.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

  • Where can I find the 'Tools' menu on my iMac? OS is 10.9.5, Safari is 7.1.3.

    Hi All,
Does anyone know how I can access the 'Tools' menu that I think should be on the top tool bar? I have searched on the net for help without any success.
    Thanks,
    David.

You must be thinking about another browser. FireFox has a Tools menu--Safari does not. Most of the things FireFox puts under its Tools menu are found in Safari preferences.
Editing or customizing the toolbar is accessible through Safari's View menu. If you need advanced features found unde "Web Developer" in the FireFox Tools menu, you can activate Safari's "Develop" menu by doing Safari > Preferencs and selecting the "Advanced "tab. At the bottom is a checkbox to show the Develop menu.
Here is a comparison. FireFox's "Tools" menu with the web developer options expanded:
    Safari's "Develop" menu after activation:

Click on the Firefox icon, or right click on a Toolbar. You can have the Menu Bar stay on by:

  • HT201250 where can i find the time machine password

Where can i find the time machine password?

    There is no such thing.
If you're backing-up to a network drive (Time Capsule, NAS, etc.), that drive may have a password.
If you're backing-up to an encrypted external HD, you'll need the encryption password.
Please clarify what version of OSX you're running (your profile says Leopard, but you've posted in the Lion forum), what you're backing-up to, and exactly what message you're getting and when (a screenshot would be fine).

  • Where can I find the current time and date of Time Capsule?

I have a home network consisint of 2 x Time Capsules and 1 x Airport Express.  All is working fine.  I would like to set up access control for one machine connecting to the network and I can see I can do this under Access Control on the Airport Utility.  My question is where can I find the current time and date setting for these devices?
I can set them to use the time.apple.com server to set the time automatically, but I can't find where to see the current time and date of the device.  The only place I can see reference to the time and date is on the logs and statistics under the Advanced tab of the AirPort Untility.

I don't think you can change the time and date on the TC itself, it just connects to a time server (and you set your own time zone).

  • I have an issue with time machine, it doesn't find the Lacie external driver it use to use. it is the same drive that I usaly use for time machine back ups. It is corectly plugged. What can I do ?

    Hi,
I'm trying to back up my macbook with time machine on the Lacie external driver I usualy use for this, but today my computer doesn't find the driver. I haven't done back up in 6 month.
Today, the Lacie driver is pluged and running, but the computer just does'nt find it.
    what shall I do ?

    Some things to consider:
Is the drive mounted, i.e., visible via Finder and/or on the Desktop?
Is the drive still selected in System Preferences, Time Machine? If not, use the "Select Disk" button.
Is Time Machine still turned on (System Preferences, Time Machine)?
Can you see the drive (and mount it) using Disk Utility (in your Utilities folder)?

  • Where can I find the appropriate text string for China Time zone?

    Hi,
Where can I find the appropriate text string for China Time zone?

    Hi,
The following timezone strings are supported in Oracle8i 8.1.7:
AST, ADT: Atlantic Standard or Daylight Time
BST, BDT: Bering Standard or Daylight Time
CST, CDT: Central Standard or Daylight Time
EST, EDT: Eastern Standard or Daylight Time
    GMT: Greenwich Mean Time
HST, HDT: Alaska-Hawaii Standard Time or Daylight Time.
MST, MDT: Mountain Standard or Daylight Time
    NST: Newfoundland Standard Time
PST, PDT: Pacific Standard or Daylight Time
YST, YDT: Yukon Standard or Daylight Time
Since your's isn't one of these, I'm hoping this is in reference to the Web Agent's ORDWEBUTL package, in which case, you can use an offset from GMT instead. For example, here in New Hampshire, USA, we are 5 hours behind GMT, so the offset would be -5, while in France, it would be +1 as they are one hour in front of GMT. According to my Windows clock, Beijing is GMT +8. Of course, you'll have to figure daylight-savings time into the equation, if you have to deal with such changes.

  • When I click "about this mac" to check on my storage, I get a number of different sections music, movies, etc. but also I get a section called backups, where can I find the files in this section?

When I click "about this mac" to check on my storage, I get a number of different sections music, movies, etc. but also I get a section called backups, where can I find the files in this section?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
All the storage in "Backups" is taken up by local snapshots, which are made automatically in all MacBooks, MacBooks Pro and MacBooks Air with OS X Lion or newer and Time Machine turned on.
See > http://pondini.org/TM/30.html I recommend you to leave them there, because they will be removed automatically. However, if you want, you can disable or remove them manually if you want, even if there's no reason to do this. Have a look at the link above for more information

  • Where can I find the manual for my Mac OS?

ver. 10.7.3: 2.4 GHz core 2 Duo with 4 GB of DRAM.
    I have three questions:
    1. Where can I find the manual for my machine i.e. hardware manual and or consumer/connaisseur manual?
    2. Does it have a zip media drive? I'm looking at the left side of the machine and I see small square shaped slot for a disk of this sort. I know this is a common type of media storage for cameras and would like to confirm that it is zip.
    3. And while i'm at it, could you remind me of the uses of the two ports advancing towards the back of the computer next to the USB inputs.
PS: I'm also interested in any technical information concerning Apple hardware and if you could direct me to the appropriate forums I would appreciate it.
    Thank you in advance.
    Sincerely
    Shawn

I will dubb the theme of this thread: the mass storage data problem and by problem I mean how can we store data in the most cost-efficient and efficacious manor possible if we can classify data storage strategies into two groups respectively: 1) the individual stragegy and 2) the corporate stragegy. The individual, we will say, is rational and seeks to store as much data as possible in the megabyte range, the gigabyte range and the terabyte range. How will he or the corporation, of conglomerate, large, mid-size or start-up size i.e. 2 - 200 people procede. Please feel free to enhance the dialog of this post in the framework of the corporate schema vs. individual and change the estimations, exp: 2 -200, to fit a realistic scenario of what i'm trying to evoke here.
    I'll start of with
MB range = 4 GB Lexar standard USB bought at Dwain Reed (note: this is just a starting point to provoke dialog and don't intend this as a suggestion)
GB range = the portable hard drive at the suggestion of Michael Black of NC
TB range = tape media, at my suggestion that older devices could be used to read the data where an external hard-drive could be used as an intermediary component to transfer data to newer devices, say the portable hard-drive of Mr. Black and an internal-hard drive which is standard in an older machine. We will say that the labor/work required to remove either is irrelevant as our time is assumed to be worthless within reasonable bounds.

  • Where can I find the list of authorized computers on Homesharing?

When I tried to auhorize a new computer on my home sharing network I am told I already have the maximum of 5.  When I count on my fingers I can only come up with 4.  Where can I find the list so I can deauthorize the one I can't find (and I don't want to deauthorize all of them)

Apple used to allow you to manage this list (way back before "Home Sharing").  However, now you're only allowed to remove all of them at once and add them back one at a time.  I had to do this before when I had a hard drive die in an authorized machine (and obviouly couldn't deauthorize it).  It can be time comsuming and somewhat problematic if all the machines aren't readily available.  Given the options, it's really the only way to get rid of the unwanted ones.
Remember this is only for Computers (Macs/PCs), not i-Devices.
    Hope this helps.
