My Time Machine WIFI slows down to an absolute crawl and then after I unplug it and plug it back in, it's back to normal.
This is a classic case of the effects of wireless interference from other networks around you. See the link at the bottom for more information about this.
It might first help to understand why things improve when you unplug the Time Capsule and then power it back up. When you do this, the Time Capsule will scan to find the best available wireless channels to use at the time.
Unfortunately, other wireless routers are doing the same thing all the time, so after a few hours or a day or two, the channel(s) that the Time Capsule was using become overcrowded and the wireless slows down to a crawl. Cordless phones can also create interference issues for a wireless network as well as any number of other electronic devices.
Unless you can convince other users around you to turn off their wireless routers, there is not much that you are going to be able to do to come up with a permanent fix. For now, locate the Time Capsule as far away from any outside walls in your home as possible and use the 5 GHz band for as many connections as you can.
A friend of mine who recently moved into a new apartment complex has the same problem. He has to restart his wireless router at least twice a day, sometimes more on the weekends.  Too many wireless networks.....not enough channels.

  • Time Machine backups slowing down after 25 days

I am experiencing a peculiar kind of behaviour from Time Machine under
Mountain Lion (10.8.2). In the multiple threads on Time Machine issues,
I could not find this exact problem described so I am wondering if
anyone else has seen the same thing or even has a solution.
Like for many others, the basic symptom is that Time Machine becomes
extremely slow. In my case this always happens about 25 days after the
last reboot. I am using a Mid 2010 27-inch IMAC and a Mid 2010 Mac Pro,
both connected to a Time Capsule via ethernet. Both are showing the
    same behaviour.
Originally I was letting Time Machine do its regular hourly backups,
this has now been changed to twice a day using TimeMachineEditor. The
change has made no difference, backups are still getting slow after
25 days. This is accompanied by kernel_task gradually ramping up
its CPU usage, from below a percent to several percent.
Here are the backupd entries from a "normal" backup:
This takes 3-4 min, which I find tolerable - although I
am always surprised by the rather large number of files that
are backed up even if the machine has remained idle:

I have now rebooted the machine, and things are back to normal.
In about 25 days, I fully expect that things will start to grind to
a halt again. On the MacPro, which has now been running for 16
days, things should be fine for another 9-10 days.

These are the messages from the first slow backup. This one was only marginally slower than a normal backup, but a sure sign that things were going awry nonetheless:

  • Time Machine very slow, Safari and iTunes have to Force Quit

Anyone else having these issues after Mavericks "upgrade"?
Time Machine is so slow as to be ineffective of useless, symtoms:
         - takes hours to prepare and run a backup of a couple of GB to the Time Capsule, anything up to 20 hrs!
         - constantly revising the amount to be backed up, up and down
         - seems to freeze periodically ad stick part way through with no change to the backed amount for hours, then speeds up, freezes, speeds up
         - time remaining estimate alternates between "casculating, estimates of hours and seconds! wildly inaccurate
                  - it's been saying 5 seconds remaining for the last 2 hrs.
         - have done two backup verifications to check for Time Capsule problems - none
         - only two successful backups achieved since the Maverisks "upgrade" due to the time it takes
         - both Time Capsule and Airport Express have the latest firmware and software
Coincident with this, both Safari and iTunes (the latest Mavericks compatible versions) both freeze when trying to quit them - have to force quit.  Both experience random slow downs and with the spinning rainbow beachball.
Looks like a Mavericks problem with the Wifi and Timemachine?
Using a late 2008 aluminium unibody Macbook with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, 100Gb of free space o the SSD.  Connecting via Wifi to Time Capsule (2TB, with 1.8TB free) and Airport Express (both n Wifi).

Check whether there is a crash report:
Go to your Applications Folder and open your Utilities Folder. Open the application Console.
In the left-hand column, click on Crash Reporter.
Click on the small triangle under Crash Reporter in the l/h column and they will all be listed.
Scroll down to the latest Safari report and click on it.
Now click on the r/h column (which now only shows THAT crash report and then Command-a to copy it all.
Come back here and Command-v it to post it here!

  • My computer slows down and hangs after installing oracle 10g

My computer just slows down after installing oracle 10g. I have a pentium 4 3ghz with 512 memory (32 mb used by graphics built in card). It slows down and hanged even if I agjusted the swap memory to 800 mb. I have two swap file/page file - in drive c and drive d. I even cannot shut it down because it takes maybe 30 minutes just to see the "shut-off/log-off" screen.

Before starting up Oracle, when you go to the task manager, how much RAM does it show actually free? 512 MB is pretty small to run Oracle in the first place-- Windows and Office can use a fair chunk of RAM themselves, depending on which Office apps you are running. You may also be suprised by the amount of RAM that a web browser, email client, and the various other apps that folks generally install can use.

  • Time Machine backups slow down TC internet connection

I'm having a problem with my TC internet connection slowing down dramatically. When I connect my DSL modem directly to my Mini, it's fine. When I connect it to the TC there are big slow downs off and on. I'm wondering if the backups done by TM slow down the internet connection and the network as a whole.

Over ethernet no, it would have almost no effect.. over wireless yes.. it can have a big effect.
How big are the backups generally? These should only be incremental and relatively small.
Measure your actual speed of copying a file to the TC.. if you can put numbers to it, that will help. Use the Activity Monitor and see what is the average speed copying a file or when TM is backing up.
Any improvements to the wireless speed will reduce the time the backup runs and how much time your internet is slow. Wireless is highly range and signal dependent. You might find a network rearrangement where you use the TC close to the Mini can solve the issue.. especially if you can connect to it by ethernet.. and then wireless bridge if you need to.

  • Flash html5 - How can i make an internal movie clip slow down and stop when it get to a certain frame?

I am creating an automotive braking system using flash and have a wheel turning. I want the wheel to slow down and stop after the brake pedal is pushed at a certain frame. I know I could do this with frame by frame animation but was hoping there was a short cut - javascript?? If not the slowing down portion then is there code for just making the internal movie clip (wheel turning) to stop when it gets to a frame.? Thanks

you can use the ticker class to create a loop that you use to control the wheel's rotation or frame, TweenJS v0.6.0 API Documentation : Ticker

  • Time machine running slow and slowing network access

I have had and continue to have issues with wifi on my MBP.  Those are pretty well summarized in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5535320?start=30&tstart=0.  I've been able to make mt system usable with some of the less dodgy workarounds in that thread ( like keeping a ping on my router running )
That thread really doesn't mention the issues I've been having with time machine though, so I thought I'd bring this up here.  Whenever time machine starts up, Safari and mail become unresponsive.  It's worst when TM is "preparing" of "cleaningup", though barely usable during the actual backup.  Mostly, I can work around that too, but occationally, TM will find GB of data to be backed up and lock up my mac for a day.  Here's a recent example:

This is on an AC router.  My peak throughput shows 19 Mb/s on menu meters, so, not great, but not this slow.  Mostly, the network activity is nothing with short bursts of higher throughput.
I'm hoping this will be addressed in 10.9.2.  In the mean time, are there any workarounds to get past this issue short of turning off TM?
    Thanks,
    Horst

These instructions were taken from Mac OS X Hints at:
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20050302225659382
The Unix program dd is a disk copying util that you can use at the command line in order to make a disk image. It makes a bit-by-bit copy of the drive it's copying, caring nothing about filesystem type, files, or anything else. It's a great way to workaround the need for Norton Ghost.
Normally, in order to make a disk image, the disk you're copying from has to be able to spin up and talk -- in other words, it's OK to make a copy if the disk is healthy. But what happens when your disk is becoming a doorstop? As long as it continues to spin, even with physical damage on the drive, dd and Mac OS X will get you out of the fire.
We had a situation recently where a friend sent a disk to us that had hard physical errors on it. It would boot in Windows, but then it would hit one of these scratch marks and just die. We fired up dd, and it started OK, but stopped at the same physical error location -- complaining about a Hard Error.
So the workaround was to designate the dd mode as noerror -- which just slides over the hard stops, and to add the mode sync, which fills the image with nulls at that point. We did it on BSD Unix, but as long as you can get the hard drive attached to your Mac, the command is the same:
    dd bs=512 if=/dev/rXX# of=/some_dir/foo.dmg conv=noerror,sync
The bs=512 designates block size, and the if=/dev/rXX# is the UNIX path to the actual disk device. Make sure that the chosen directory (some_dir) has enough room to take the entire disk image -- which will be equal to the size of the drive. Since dd doesn't care about the contents of the drive, it copies every bit on the thing, so you get an image equal to the disk's capacity. A really big file. One workaround is to put it on a RAID array.
Once you've established the disk image (in this example, foo.dmg), you're almost home. Here's where your Mac OS X box is far and away the best thing to have. In this example, the dd output file is foo.dmg. You have to realize that this is an exact copy of a busted drive, but the "holes" are filled with nulls. As long as the damage isn't to the boot sector, though, when you double-click on it, Mac OS X mounts it without breathing hard ... who cares if it's FAT32, NTFS, whatever.
Due to the size of the image that we were copying, we put it on a RAID array, and had to access the image over the network -- it still mounted fine. In straight UNIX, if you try to mount a disk image, it complains that there is "no block device" and fails. Once your image is mounted, it appears in your Finder, and then it's easy work to retrieve the critical files from the image -- usually things like .doc files and .xls files and the lot.
Finally, since your disk is actually dying, once you have your image, you can drop it to tape or something and you've not only recovered your files, you've made a viable backup as well. Once again, that which destroys a Windows box becomes a play thing to a Mac OS X box.

I know leo laporte said that the podcast was done in 1080p and my computer with its built in 64 megabyte graphics card might have trouble with this podcast but your machine must have a better graphics card than mine. 1080p requires at least 128 megabytes of graphics memory built in. My machine played this podcast on quicktime fine until they came out with the update to quicktime last week or two ago. I was going to upgrade my memory until I came accross your story and your machines doing the same thing with much better specs. I think it might be the quicktime update that is causing a problem. Maybe Leo will talk about this problem since he is doing a mac show about macs.

  • Why does my footage Slow down and loose audio when imported to after effects cs6?

Whenever I import video of any kind into after effects, it slows down and looses audio. It happens for every video. The weird thing is, it seems like it doesnt happen to anyone else on the internet. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME PLEASE!!!! I am about to cry. I cant do anything with this stupid software! If there is a solution please tell me. Its really annoying.
    extra info-
    On Mac
    mov. Files
    H.264 codec

Slows down when? When you preview? Do you know how to preview?
If you are pressing the space bar to preview the video then the behavior you are seeing is normal. AE will not playback in real time with autio unless you do a ram preview (look it up). You must learn to use the software.

  • Computer slows down and locks up after installing Xtreme Mu

I recently upgraded my Audigy 2 to the new Xtreme Music soundcard. The music sounds great!? Before install, I uninstalled all drivers from the Audigy 2. Now, my computer behaves differently. Before the login screen (Windows XP), my video flashes multiple colors for about 2 seconds. After logging into Windows, applications have slowed down (this is after installing the drivers for the sound card and updating the software to the latest from the website). For example, Email took some time to come up (outlook), and then a word attachment refused to come up. IE took considerable amount of time to launch. This is after running the computer with the sound card for a week.
The problems aren't consistent. I returned the card, and the salesman asked if I plugged in the external power (floppy dri've connector). I read the instructions, and they did not state to do this, but I will give it a try. I swapped the card for a brand new one and brought it home. This time, I plugged in the external power. Same symptoms, if not worse. It is sporadic, and sometimes worse than others.
This morning, my computer was working extremely slow opening IE or Outlook and reading email. I pulled the sound card and all is great again. Bummer!? I really like the sound this card produces. My fear is, will ANY X-Fi card do this or just the Xtreme Music?I have an ASUS P4P800 Deluxe (onboard sound has always been disabled). I didn't have any problems with the Audigy 2. 550W power supply, Gig memory, Pentium 4 2.8 GHz processor, and and ATI X600 video card. No other cards are installed in the system.

I tried it is 2 separate slots. Same symptoms. I am looking to see if it is a power issue (not enough juice from a 550w power supply), or if there is a conflict. I still have the creative drivers and software loaded without the soundcard installed and no problems (So I'm ruling out the creative sound software).

Hello! I have installed Photoshop on PC WIN 7 64bit. When I store first time a Photoshop docuument, it works fine - after re-opening and doing changes I trying again to store it - it does not work anymore! First it does not accept the name (message "It can not be stored because the nam is invalid" With 2. trial it tells me that the data is blocked and I don't have the rights - and I should chenge them. But I am working as the Admin on my PC - and each trial to change the rights of the data is as well not possible because of missing rights - even I am Admin! I must always store the data with a new name, then it works, but I also cannot remove the old datas or shift them into the waste paper - because of no rights! -- sorry for not perfect english, I am German native speaker! Tahnks a lot for help!

    Hi,
I am using a Nvidia 4200M adapter in my Laptop, Driver 266.96, Direct X 11
In my desktop I am using an ATI XFX 6950, latest revision drivers (I am not at home right now so I cant get that info).
The issue I did describe above, but it was a long explanation.
In some flash games the game files load initially and get as far as the "click to start" button. Then the flash area usually goes either all white or all black (usually depending on the falsh game default background color) and then it stays that color. Cant see anything after hitting start (usually most games have an intro video or animation before the game starts, but I cant see any of it.
For the very few games that do start, the flash game or application does not seem to work correctly in that when the rare game starts, it wont save any game files or save files to the pc and so if I exit the game (navigate away to another page or close browser) and then later come back, even though I click the option to save games (and ensure that the flash application slider shows it can save files and lots of space) it does not save and I have to start from the beginning all the time.
    More explanation I gave above.

  • Hello, I'm pretty sure my fan on my 2009 mac book pro has stopped running. Would this cause the computer to slow down and take for ever to boot up and show the color wheel every time I select an application ?

Hello, I'm pretty sure my fan on my 2009 mac book pro has stopped running. Would this cause the computer to slow down and take for ever to boot up and show the color wheel every time I select an application ? how involved to replace fan ? cost ?
    thanks

Not directly, but if the CPU overheats because of incompatible software, that would cause slowdowns. Do not allow the computer to run if the fan is not working unless you wish to fry your motherboard. Please make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.

why has my hp deskjet 2050  printer and scanner suddenly slowed down and printing one line at a time

This is usually indicative of a defective print cartridge.  Suspect the black is low in ink or defective.  Please check all cartridges.
