Time Machine wireless backup priority

Is it possible to give a lower priority to Time Machine wireless traffic? It is nearly impossible for me to stream video during a Time Machine backup. A feature to give priority to non-time machine traffic would be great. Many routers allow you to give higher priority to certain data (e.g. VoIP), and a similar feature would be great. Can this be done now? If not, how do I suggest this to Apple?

No, no microwaves. My phone is one of the new dect 6.0 types that is not supposed to interfere with networks. I wonder if this issue is connected to the drop out problems people are having with their airports?

  • Time Machine Wireless Backup.  Network connection lost

I have my old PowerMac G5 configured as my backup server using Time Machine. The computers attached to my network via ethernet backup successfully. When I try to backup my laptops via wireless, The process starts and then quits after backing up a portion of the drive. The wireless connection is being dropped. This happens with my MacBook and MacBook Pro. I am using an Airport Extreme configured for wireless N only.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • HT3275 time machine wireless backup

We have a network admin with 5 Mac Air Books that connect to an Aruba wireless network most of the time.  When they are connected via wireless, their time machine backups fail.  If they connect wired, it is successful.   I am coming into this issue completely cold.  I'm not even a MAC guy.. (that is to change very soon   )  .
Any suggestions?  What to look for?   Does the agent point to the physical NIC and not the wireless ??
    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

It sounds like you are about to start either a massive sale of MBA.. or a Damascus Road conversion experience!!
The TM connects by AFP protocol.. (another new part of your learning curve.. yeap, apple have their very own protocol)... to the TC... which should be in bridge.
What appears to be happening is the Lion OS is having some issues remembering where the TC is.. even though internet is still working. This failure happens in pure Apple environment so I doubt your Aruba wireless is related at all. Generally it happens on both wired and wireless.. so your issue is a little different in only failing via wireless. Open a terminal (under applications, utilities, and use the arp -a command to see if the TC MAC address is lost)
There is some great info for you to read.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Installing the widget.. allows easier access to the logs which give fairly detailed picture of what has failed.. look at A1.
But I also recommend you read even if hastily survey the FAQ on the site and a bit of explanation of how Time Machine actually works and it own quirks.
The Log in the TC is also helpful.. I am assuming the MBA are all on Lion.. so make sure you download airport utility 5.6 for Lion as the installed version 6.0 is the latest but not so greatest version lacking the depth of the original v5 utility.
If you find a series of AFP connect and disconnect in the log.. this is a bug in Lion/7.6 firmware..
You might do better going back to 7.5.2 in the TC which was much more stable.
    Good luck.

  • Can I use my older airport express with an ext drive to backup time machine wireless, Can I use my older airport express with an ext drive to backup time machine wireless

Can I use an older (flat) Airport Express to attach an ext hard drive and backup time machine wirelessly? and how?

can I then connect a HD with itunes music and photos?
Now we are drifting from the original question.
Im alreadty using the HD attached to my Mac Pro...can I just connect it to the Extreme and access it wirelessly with any device on the wifi net?
You may get another opinion on this from another user, but I do not recommend this either, based on a number of experimens over the years with this.
Access to your data on the drive will be much slower. iTunes will tend to "lose" the library this way and you will have to re-point the iTunes application at the library on a regular basis.
Things are even worse with the iPhoto library. The experts over in the iPhoto support area strongly advise that you do not do this, since any break in communication between the iPhoto application and iPhoto library can easily corrupt the entire library.  A wireless connection makes things even more dicey.
My advice......Use a drive connected to the Extreme for storage or other backup copies of data.....not for "working" files or libraries.
But, you may get some other opinions from users here.

  • I'm suddenly getting the kernel panic message and constant restarts when connected to the time machine wireless network. if is switch to the BT network, all fine. no help found so far as to what's wrong or how to correct, anyone have any thoughts...

Recently upgraded to mountain lion in order to buy the new tall tower for time machine backups. had to get technical support to help with set up as it wouldn't play ball with two computers. all working fine up until last week when the iMac started getting backup error messages. then system restarts independently when using time machine on the time machine wireless network. only stops restarting when I switch the wireless network back to he bt one, which is a pain obviously as can't back up to time machine then.  it has to be a problem with airport utility or something wireless but all says all up to date with software etc. all still works fine backing up from laptop on the wireless network, just the iMac is not happy. any help or thoughts very much appreciated.

Hi, many thanks Bob, what you say is not unthinkable at all, although it does answer the question
"what could I do *instead* of ..." rather than the one I actually asked, but seriously ...
Shutting down might be an answer, although it would clear out my tmp directory - which I might not want to have to sort through looking for things I want to save every time I go to work, and also, now that nvram doesn't seem to work for disabling the boot chime, it can get a bit embarassing booting up in a busy meeting if I have forgotten to mute before I shut down. There are all sorts of other issues, such as editing documents, loading web pages and so on that I would have to set up again.
Your suggestion of letting Apple know is a good one - thank you for the link.
    Take care,
    Mark

  • Trouble getting time machine to backup latest numbers file.

I'm able to use Time Machine to backup my macbook wirelessly to an external hard drive attached to my iMac. However, I recently noticed that I am failing to back up the latest version of a numbers file.
Has anyone noticed any incomplete or outdated files - that shouldn't be - in their number file back ups?

Well, Time Machine unfortunately is bugged beyond use for some people. It is nearly impossible to tell if TM will work every single time until Apple will take a look at their programming and fix the darn thing.
Anyways, back to the point. The problem with updated files is that TM will look for new things that are indexed as new, and by indexed as new as in the Spotlight regards the file as updated since last backup. I don't really know if this would work, but you could give it a try.
    Try this:
    1) Duplicate the file into the same folder with a different name
ex. filename.doc, and make a new file called filename_1.doc
    2) Make sure that this file is in the same folder as the other file.
    3) Back up
I think that would make Spotlight tell TM to backup the updated documents.

  • Time machine wireless

    hi
all i want to do is extend my home wireless network....
i have disabled my thompson wireless router TG782T and connected my time capsule to this via ethernet
how do i get the time machine to transmit a wireless signal?
do i have to reset unit?
will i lose all my backed up data?
i also want to connect an airport express to extend coverage ( i can connect this via ethernet or wi fi)
    any assistance would be fantastic
    Thanks in advance
    Kerls71

I am going to need a bit more info..
What OS are you running on the computer you are using for the setup and what airport utility??
When you say you disabled the Thomson wireless router.. do you mean you bridged it? Or just turned off wireless?
There are two scenarios.. each are pretty well equal..
Turn off wireless in the TG782T and run the Time Capsule (Time Machine is backup software on the computer). in bridge mode with create a wireless network.
Or bridge the TG782T and run pppoe client in the TC.. which will also create a wireless network..
    Either scenario will be fine.
You do not have to reset the TC .. just set it in correct mode via the airport utility.
Even if you reset the unit.. you will not lose any data backed up on the hard disk.
An express can extend the wireless or use roaming network.. again either are possible setups.
Roaming is much faster but you need to run ethernet to the express. Otherwise setup extend wireless.. just use the instructions. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259
    Roaming instructions are here.

  • Time machine wirelessly with Airport Express

I am curious if I can backup my MBP with Time Machine wirelessly through my Airport Express. I have attached my external HD to my AE via USB cable and it does not appear on the desktop. It would simply make backing up more convenient.

If you mean an Airport Extreme, yes, you may be able to do that, but backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.
If you mean an Airport Express, no, it doesn't support connecting a hard drive at all.

Just bought a 3TB Time Capsule for a small office. Will have 4 users with MacBooks. What would ne the best setup for time machine individual backups and internet sharing in a secure way?

Set up each Mac for Time Machine backups in the normal way.  Time Machine will keep each backup separate on the Time Capsule, so users will only be able to see the backups of their own Mac.
Yes....there are convoluted workarounds that might allow one user to see the backups of another.....IF...they know the administrator password of the "other" Mac.
As far as Internet sharing, all users will have access to the Internet if they have a wired or wireless connection. If a Mac connects using wireless, it is possible to limit the time that they are allowed to connect to the network.
For example, you might limit the ability to connect to the wireless from say each Weekday from 8 AM to 6 PM.
With a wired Ethernet connection, you cannot limit access times to the Internet.

  • Can I use Time Machine to backup ONLY an external drive?

I am having problems with the internal HD on my iMac and Disk Utility is telling me I need to reformat the drive and restore from backup. Only problem is that my 3TB Lacie Thunderbolt drive I was using for Time Machine recently failed (think it may have happened during an electrical storm brownout). Yep, I know, ***** to be me
The issues with the internal HD are preventing the iMac from booting and I would prefer not to have to purchase various repair software to find one that really works such as Disk Warrior or similar ((despite it getting very good reviews). I suspect it make be HFS corruption but no way to really tell that I am aware of.
I have setup an external drive with Yosemite and booted from that so now my old internal drive is seen as an "external drive".
I am using Disk Utility to make an image copy to a new 3TB external drive I purchased. Writing the DMG is going to take some time.
What I would like to do is to set up Time Machine to backup to a separate external 3TB hard drive (the second one I purchased) and have TM create a backup of ONLY the old internal drive - not the new system as well as the old internal unit.
Is this possible and if so can anyone advise how to do this. Does not seem I can exclude the system drive I am now booted from so that it is not backed up. (This makes sense that TM would be designed this way given its primary purpose is to backup a system).
If TM cannot be configured in this way, is there another option I can use?
    Thanks
    Andrew

Thanks for that advice. I have heard of it but a friend who does IT support at a University nearby suggested using Disk Utility to save an image - hence this is currently underway at present. Once this is finished I will try Carbon Copy Cloner.
I have another friend who has an older version of CCC - do you know if an old version will work ok or if only the latest supports Yosemite?
Also once I have the clone completed from CCC, is the process then to reformat the old internal drive and then clone from the CCC external drive back to the internal and then reboot and trust all is well?
    Appreciate your help Csound1.
    Regards
    Andrew

On imac 10.6.8 using current version of Aperture.  How can I access the Aperture Library  on my external hard drive that I use with time machine for backup?  I can only access the application but not the library..

Go into Time Machine (the program not the bundle on the extrnal disk) and using Time Machine's browser go to the Folder where the library lives. You could look in the library bundle in Time Machine but that won't really tell you much,
If you want to make sure it truely has backed up your library you will need to restore it and open the restored library with Aperture.
If all this still has you confused you need to read up on Time Machine in order to get a feel for how it works, for what it is doing and for how to restore files from it.

How do I use time machine to backup to an external hard drive plugged into my airport extreme?  I used to be able to but now time machine will not recognize my hard drive to select as a backup when plugged into my airport extreme.  I'm not sure what happened or changed.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks

First thing to do is go to the Pondini tips page, then follow the link to his full TM site for all the details.

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

  • Using time machine to backup Logic Projects

    Hi
I was wondering if it is possible to use time machine to backup my Logic Projects. I have a seperate internal drive that I use to keep all my user data on, like my Logic projects. I want to use time machine to back up these projects onto a external firewire drive.
Can timemachine only backup your systems drive and therefore I would need to have my Logic projects based stored on it?

Yes - time machine can back up any drive. I am using 3 drives: system drive, a USB2 drive for Time machine backups and a firewire 800 drive for Logic Studio projects, instruments, samples, audio, etc. TM backs up my system and FW drives to the USB drive.
Time machine options (in system preferences) allow you to exclude/include drives so you just need to set it to include your second internal drive.
The only thing I'm not sure of is whether this effects the loop browser. Oddly, when I was experimenting with using aliases for Apple loops, Logic actually found the TM backup files when it couldn't locate the original GB loops! After some file moving and index deleting I cleared all loops but now I have duplicate entries again in Logic - possibly due to TM, but I have not verified this.
