Time machine with LaCie USB external HD

I was just over at the LaCie site looking around for a big USB drive to use for Time Machine backups on an iMac I've ordered, and I noticed that only their firewire HDs were advertised as "Time Machine Compatible." None of the high speed USB drives were. Well, I don't want to pay for a feature I don't need, but I want to make sure the drives work. I will contact LaCie, but in the meantime, anybody out there using USB LaCie drives for TM backups? Which ones? Problems?

I'm using a LaCie 500GB Firewire, not USB HD with TM. It could be used with USB but Firewire seems to be faster. It also has a connection port for eSATA but I could'nt figure out how to connect it to a MacBook Pro since it does'nt sport a port for it.

Setting Up Time Machine with a Partitioned External Hard Drive

I recently bought a new external hard drive (MyPassport) and I was advised to partition it in order to keep my movies/music files separate from the rest of my files. So I partitioned it, but now I can't figure out how to set up the Time Machine with 2 separate hard drives. Is there a way to set it up so that I can use Time Machine for both, one for movies/music and one for everything else?

Two backups are better than one, especially if the files are important. So make sure Time Machine is set to back up your "audio lecture files", and copy them to a flash drive as well.
(Keep in mind that no-one but you knows how Time Machine is set up on your computer, or where you store your "audio lecture files", or how important they are for you.)

I can't use Time Machine with a USB drive plugged into an Airport Extreme.

I connected an external drive to the USB port of an Airport Extreme, intending to use it with Time Machine and one of the laptops in the Wi-Fi network (call it Laptop). The drive is visible from the Disks tab of each computer’s Airport Utility but from nowhere else, in particular not to Laptop’s Time Machine preference.
Laptop is relatively new and arrived with Mavericks. Time Machine used to work on Laptop before I upgraded the rest of the network (a desktop Mac Pro and another laptop) from OS X 10.6 to Mavericks.
The drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I have tried other external hard drives, with the same behavior. The desktop correctly use Time Machine to back up its internal drive to another internal drive. Another possibly relevant factor is that our DSL connection has recently been upgraded, and now uses a 2Wire modem that provides its own router, so Airport Utility’s Network Router Mode is set to “Off (Bridge Mode)”.
I would be grateful for suggestions of what to try next.

Beginner's question: Using Time Machine with a WD External Drive

Hello folks,
Could someone help me with some basic questions?
I have a MacBook with Mac OSX 10.5.5. It has Time Machine but I've never used it before. I've just obtained a Western Digital External Hard Drive which is Mac compatible but, I'm told, may not be formatted for Mac.
1. If that's the case, how do I format it for Mac so that I can use it with my MacBook? Or can I just plug-and-play?
2. Once ready to use, I'd like to use the external drive for two purposes: (a) to create back-up images of my entire computer using Time Machine, and (b) as a second drive where I can just drag-and-drop selected files when needed (e.g. so that I can put photos in a photo folder on my external instead of on my MacBook hard drive). Will my MacBook let me do this, or will using Time Machine effectively reserve the entire external hard drive for Time Machine and not allow my to drag-and-drop files?

Question 1:
1. Launch Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utility folder.
2. Click the "erase" tab
3. Select your entire WD disk on the sidebar (the uppermost icon).
4. Format: "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"
5. Name the Disk
6. Click on "erase"
Question 2:
What is the size of your drive? If it is large enough you can partition it but Time Machine backup will "grow". So if it's important to you to save all backups you'll want to give it the whole disk. If not, you can partition the disk at the same time you format it.
Follow the steps here. It will accomplish both Q1 & Q2.

Using Time Machine with a Used External Hard drive

I had posted a question before about using an external hard drive that I have for a Time Machine back up that already have some stuff on the hard drive, and if using it for Time Machine would erase the info I currently have on the drive.
I got a response that said if it was formatted as Xsan or Mac OS Extended with or without case-sensitivity or journaling, it would not erase my current info, but otherwise, it would.
When I checked the format on my external hard drive, it is listed as "MS-DOS (FAT32)". Does that mean it is the Xsan/Mac OS extended (that wouldn't erase my current information) or does it mean it WILL erase my info?

Yes. FAT formatted drives are for use with Windows.

Logic board failure on Mac Book Pro. Backed up info via time machine with sea gate external hard drive. Help!

I now have no access to any mac now, and the old mac while it still has my old information freezes immeadiatley upon starting. I am therefore switching to PC laptop that has be graciously given to me. My question is how do I get my information off my external drive, and on to my new laptop? The laptop is an Asus with windows vista, and I am planning on upgrading it to Window's 7. All my information from the past 3 years of college is stored in this Seagate 320 gb external hard drive. What do I need to do?

OK… firstly try the USB port on the other side and see if it makes any difference. Otherwise, do you have any better luck using the drive when it's connected through an AC powered USB hub.
To check if your MBP is seeing your drive at all it should appear in the USB section in the System Profiler utility.

Quick question about using Time Machine on iMac FireWire external

I have been backing up my MacBook using Time Machine via a USB external hard drive that is connected to my iMac. Now when I look at the Time Machine setting in my MacBook is says that the MacBook NEEDS to be plugged in in order for the next backup to occur. This is no issue for me, but I am wondering if this has always been the case. It may have been something that I overlooked, but I do not remember seeing that message when using Time Machine over my network on my MacBook before.

Yes, that's correct. TM will not backup a laptop while it's operating only on battery unless you upgrade to 10.5.3. This latest version provides a TM option to run backups when the computer is on battery power.
It's inadvisable to run a backup while on battery power because if the battery goes dead your backup could become corrupted. At the very least files may not get backed up as expected.

Time Machine error-43 using external 500GB LaCie drive

I occasionally get an error during the Time Machine backups. Here is the error log from the latest error. I bought this LaCie USB external 500GB drive a couple of weeks ago and began running Time Machine at that time. The errors only appear to happen every few days. The "put hard drive to sleep when possible" option is not checked. The Computer sleep slider is set to 1 hr.

The one way I found to get the TM back on the rail is to access my back up disk from finder, choose the sparse disk image. Hit cmmd-delete and banish it.
Start over again. Be sure to be connected by a wired connection as on a wireless network it will take a while. But I guess you have the HD attached via firewire or usb so it should not be a major issue.

Well, what you mentioning is possible. However, I don't know whether it's supported (as in, "easy to set up."). Time Machine officially supports backing up to a locally attached drive, to a machine running a Time Machine server (i.e. running OS X Server software), and to a Time Capsule. I don't know that it officially supports a drive attached to an AirPort or to a Time Capsule. Though I know some people have gotten it to work.
Best I can say is to try it. Plug the drive into the Time Capsule, ensure it's shared on the network, and then try and set it as a backup target from a machine in the Time Machine backup panel (you'll need to ensure it's mounted first). If it works, you're all set.

If you forgot your encryption password:
Warning: Make sure it's a password you will remember or write it down for safekeeping. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you can't restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and chooseset up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

You CAN use a drive with files already on it to store Time Machine backups. But long term, that is not recommended. You do not need to reformat or re-partition the drive to do this. Once Time Machine Backups are established, you could remove the old files.
But do not delete Time Machines files with the Finder -- that can cause it to lose its place and lose everything.
With the cost of backup drives under US$100, it might be a better idea in the long run to get another drive. Best results from Time Machine is a drive about 3 times larger than the drive(s) you are backing up.

Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine.
