Time Machine with multiple users on single computer

Hi All,
I have an iMac at home with multiple user log ons. I'm about to get the Time Capsule and start using Time Machine (currently I use backup).
When I switch on Time Machine, does it switch on for all users, or will each user need to turn on Time Machine?
If I have to switch on Time Machine for each user, will each user's time machine back up the entire computer (so I'll have two complete copies on my computer on the external drive)?
If this does occur, can I control what Time Machine backs up so TM only backs up user specific information?
Thanks in advance,
Chris

When you first backup it will backup your whole system (user directories, system directories, applications, etc) unless you specify folders to exclude. When a user account is added to the computer, their home folder will be added to the backup in a similar way to if you added a new application. It will back up the directory structure exactly as it is on your main hard drive. The backup will essentially keep a copy of the whole hard drive on the backup drive.
The Time Machine will either be on for the whole system, or off for the whole system. It is not on or off for a specific user account. Users (depending on if they've got admin privileges) may have control over turning time machine on or off, but this does not change who can access the backups. All users will be able to invoke Time Machine to get to their backed up files.
Time Machine does not make separate backups for individual users. Instead, it preserves the permissions for backed up files, so while every user can access the backups, they cant just browse other users' files on the backup. The same restrictions on the main drive are carried over to the backup. Still, a standard user who's lost a file will be able to go into Time Machine, access a backed up version of the file, and restore it. Unlike standard users who are restricted from seeing other users' files in the backups, Admins are also restricted but they can be authenticated to view other users' files if they want to.

  • Time Capsule with multiple users. Data Safe?

    Hi.
I was just wondering if the I use Time Capsule with multiple users (multiple macs) I believe the backups are all seperated and password protected. Am I right?
But what about the migration assistant? Doesn't the migration assistant help you to transfer your data from one mac to your new one without asking for a password? So wouldn't it be easy to use the migration assistant to get data of another time capsul backup?
At the work place of my girlfriend they are using time capsul, and I'm not sure if I would advise her to backup her data to that timecapsule. Ok you can exclude folders, but not the mailaccount.

    Thanks for the reply.
But isn't it possible to transfer data from an old user account to a new account with a different name? Wouldn't that overide the password prompt?
No more or less than on your Mac.
I mean I understand that if you migrate a user account from one mac to another you wouldn't gain access to the home folder of that user, but as I understood the migration assistant it is possible to migrate data to a folder of your choice. I did not try it yet but that's what I (maybe misunderstood) read here http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/19.html
No. You can select which user accounts to transfer, but you can't transfer one user's data to another.

  • ICal sharing with multiple users on same computer

How can i set up iCal to share with multiple users on the same computer?

yes, BUT... you need a central repository for the master calendars, usually referred to a Calendar Server. If you are not using a Mac OS X Server on your private network, I think you can use web-based servers that use standard calendar protocol.

  • Multiple users on single computer

We're helping a church train their volunteers to use
Contribute. In their small computer lab, volunteers will edit their
particular directories/pages. We can easily create keys for each of
them with their specific allowed directories - can multiple users
share a single computer and let us achieve limited access for each
user? How do we set up Contribute or the connection key to demand a
user log-on? This church has no publishing server. Is this
    possible?

I don't think so because Contribute does this weird thing
where it stores sftp / ftp information in your registry key
(encrypted) and then regardless of what you enter when it prompts
you to enter that data it still uses whatever was first stored for
that domain in your registry. So if anyone ever opts to "save" the
login information, ever, then it's set until you clear your
    registry key chain. (annoying)
It would be possible if you made each computer specific to
role, like all roles that use this computer uses a sftp / ftp
information that is on the same level.
Long story short, you can do this, but it might cause
problems when users don't understand why they can't do things they
normally could do (sftp information was saved as a lower level
user) or a low level access user who has privledges they should not
have (sftp information was saved as a high level user).

  • Multiple users on single computer mounting same RAID drive

    Hi I'm a newbie:)
I have multiple users on a single computer which need to mount the same RAID drive on a different networked computer. I have no problem making the mounts, the only thing is that when each user makes its mount the drive appears multiple times when doing an ls /Volumes. Ie, the first user mounts sparkle and it appears as sparkle. The second user mounts sparkle and it appears as sparkle-1. The third user mounts sparkle and it appears as sparkle-2. In the finder they all show up as just plain sparkle, but for running scripts, the hyphen-# screws things up. Does anyone know of a way to have the same drive mounted without the hyphen-#s?
    Many thanks!
    Megan

What kind of scripts? I don't think there's any way around the naming problem, but you could use regular expressions. I don't see why sparkle* shouldn't do the trick, or add sparkle-[0-9$] to whatever constuct you have.

  • Time capsule with multiple users full

I'm helping a client with their full time capsule. They have about 6 computers backing up to one time capsule. Some of the computers still have backups from a year and a half ago. One of the computers only has one backup from a couple weeks ago.
Now, the computer which has one backup, now has more stuff and there's not enough space. If these other computers with backups from a year and a half ago deleted some of their really old stuff, it seems there would be room. And I thought that's what time machine was supposed to do, keep the really old stuff until there's no more room and then just keep the most recent stuff.
I guess the issue is that the time capsule can't decide for itself to delete other user's old backups. So my question is: how can I delete their old backups? This would be simple on a regular time machine drive, but the darned obfuscated sparsebundles make this seemingly impossible.
Is my best bet to just delete the complete backup from the computers with really old backups and then just re-backup both computers?
    thanks,

Correct, although it appears to be intentional. Many users would be outraged if their backups were deleted by someone else's Mac!

See #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

That's a lot of Macs on one Time Capsule. One possibility would be to connect a USB drive to the TC and let some of those Macs back up to it.

  • Sharing photos with multiple users on single iMac

I want to share all my iphotos with all users. I purchased an external hard drive (Rock Mobile) that automatically synced up to the Time Machine. I have loaded the iPhoto data base onto the Time Machine. I would like other users to have access via their screen saver - how can I do this?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You'll need to partition that external if you want to share it with TM.
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • How to save in time machine for multiple user on one iMac

I have 3-users on my iMAC.
How can I save to Time machine?
Does it save all of files/changes when I save as Administrator?

  • Time Machine with multiple hard drives

I use a very large external hard drive for time machine. I back up to this time machine, the two hard drivs that are inside my macbook pro, 512GB ssd, and 250GB SSD that is in the optical drive. I then backup a 1TB portable hard drive which holds all my movies and then I backup another 1Tb portable hard drive which holds all my "reserve" files, which means they are files that are no longer important to be on my computer. Old pictures, music, etc.
Now, I can't plug all of these drive's in at once. So, let's say I have to do a backup and I have nothing plugged in but the time machine external hard drive. Will it only backup the two hard drives that are in my computer and then later somehow let me go and restore the other drives? Or will it attempt to restore all 4 drives at one time? Because if the one in my computer mess's up, the other's may not be messed up and I do not want it to restore those.
I have used Time Machine before to restore my system. But never since I have started adding extra drives for Time Machine to backup.
I am also planning on adding, yet another drive for it to backup which is a 1TB portable hard drive that I keep raw files on for photography. I'm just curious how this works when and if the time comes.

well superduper is FREE, CCC isnt.........CCC can do the daily updates etc,.  Superduper DOES NOT.    the CCC and Superduper CLONES are bootable.......so, if your HD crashes, you can throw in the CLONE, and youre back and running in mins, rather than hours etc .
You should NEVER consider a backup a "backup", ........2 copies is 1, and 1 is none.....always have 2 copies of important files / pics etc etc,......... DECADES of work have been lost by people who thought their stuff was safe because they had a (meaning 1) backup.
Simplicity? Yes, Simplicity is my religion.    CLONE your HD with programs and settings, ......and use a 2nd HD updated daily / weekly etc (preferable 2 such 'seecond' harddrives, copies of each other) with all personal stuff / work / pics / vids/ documents.....
superficially time machine is simpler,  "smack a button and everything backs up".......in REALITY however when it "all goes up in flames"................the pro method (and my method) is QUICKER and more reliable by far to get down and running.
Ive restored other peoples from total crash and burns via Time machine.......and "my" way............my way always ends up faster by a mile. Also personal / work etc  files are kept autonomous to the system data / programs OS,.....as it logically should be.
Time machine is the fastest incremental backup........but its as slow as paint peeling if you need it in case of a TOTAL CRASH.......wherein a bootable clone can be thrown in , in less than 20 mins.

  • Time Machine with multiple HDs

    Hi,
tried searching but couldn't find an answer so here goes:
Can you use multiple HDs with Time Machine? As in: I have 3 external 500gb HDs. Can I get three more to back up each one?

TM will only back up to one drive at a time. Other applications, such as SuperDuper, will back up to multiple drives. You could use Backup in Applications to back up selective files to another drive.

  • Sharing iTunes on one machine with multiple users... problems...

Hi, I've recently done a fresh installation of XP, and have downloaded iTunes 7.1
    It's set up as follows:
    1 machine, 3 users:
Administrator(Admin account) ; Me (limited) ; My partner (limited).
I have set up the itunes folder in the shared documents as suggested in the apple KB article about multiple users on one machine.
As administrator, I imported a CD and it's artwork from the store.
Pointed all three users to the folder in the shared documents - exactly as per the KB article.
I went into my everyday account, and pointed itunes to the itunes folder in the shared documents.
it didn't see the tracks. I had to use the add folder to library in the file menu in order to get itunes to see it.
is this just something that has to be accepted, or is there a way of making the folder 'live' so that i don't need to keep updating my library manually? - almost like a refresh?..

Unfortunaely iTunes doesn't monitor for new files, so if you import a CD in one account, it will have to be added to the libraries of the other accounts manually - if the users want it.
I guess this is both good and bad as it means that each account can have its own music choices while at the same time sharing a common pool of music files.

  • Sharing Library with Multiple Users on  SAME COMPUTER

My wife and I use Windows XP Pro. We imported all of our CDs to the iTunes on her user account. How do I access or import the library to the iTunes on my account? I want to avoid logging into her account to listen to the music.
The help index has info on sharing music for multiple computers on a network but I didn't see an answer for sharing music between multiple user accounts in XP on one computer. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Use tweakUI, google on it to get it and install it.

  • Time Machine with Multiple Disk

I wanted to know if it is possible to have multiple time machine disk. I was thinking about have one disk at home, and taking another disk offsite. I was thinking about switching these disc out like once a month or something like that so I always have a copy of my Itunes Library and other important files off site, and also so that I have another backup incase both my Imac hard drive, and my backup drive both stop working at the same time.

Can you "fool" Time Machine into backing up to two separate volumes by giving them the same name?
You wouldn't connect them at the same time... you'd connect one at work during the day and the other at home at night time.
That way one backup (the one at work, say) stores all your changes during the course of the day and then the other one (say at home) backs up all your changes made at night.
They would each, of course, back up all changes made since last connected (for example, as soon as you connect your "home" drive it will automatically back up all the changes you made during the day in one fell swoop, then make incremental backups during the rest of the evening).
PS: I am using SuperDuper right now to clone a TM backup to another drive but I want to be able to use both drives in turn to make incremental backups (once I've completed the clone).

  • Home sharing to Apple TV with multiple users on same computer

I have two different users on the same computer.  To facilitate sharing their music and movies to eachother, they are each using Home Sharing with the same Apple ID.  As long as both users remain logged in, this works with no problem.   Except for Apple TV.  The Apple TV can see each library, so they both show up in the list under Computers, but only one is accessible.  It's either the first one that broadcast itself, or the first one that Apple TV connected to, I'm not sure which.  But, once that's established, the second library will remain in the Computers list, but any attempt to connect to the library will fail.  It appears there is a limitation that Apple TV can only connect to a single library per physical computer, even though it can tell there are multiple libraries there.
Does anyone have any idea how to work around this without consolidating the libraries?  Being able to connect to multiple libraries is the goal, not consoludating them.

I don't have that set up anymore, but used to. I had no problems sharing from either library. Of course it may have changed since I used it, but wouldn't see why.
