Time Machine woes

Here's what I went through last weekend... there's a lesson in there that I learned.
In preparation to erase my hard drive, install OSX Mavericks, and then transfer my data onto my Macbook, the first thing I did was run a Time Machine backup.  I back up to a Time Capsule and have never had any issues with Time Machine.  Once the backup was done I proceeded as mentioned above but when it was time to transfer data from my Time Machine backup, my Mac found the Time Capsule, then the sparsebundle, and after I entered my password I got an error, something like 'no volume was found on the disk'.  After several tries I tried going to a different Mac's backup on the Time Capsule and it started transferring just fine.  Cut to the chase, I found that the Setup Assistant can only look at the latest Time Machine backup, and somehow mine was corrupt.  So even though that sparsebundle was full of good backups (I could navigate to them on another Mac), the latest one was not being recognized and I couldn't transfer my stuff in.  I had to boot to the recovery console, restore my Mac to an earlier backup, run another full backup, verify it (go to recovery console & go through the menus as if I wanted to restore to an earlier backup, then make sure the backup I just did was there), and do the whole shabang again.
Lesson - before you rely on a Time Machine backup, verify that it's good like I did above.
Question - does anyone here know if I could have just deleted my latest bad backup?  I sure as heck wasn't about to try that without knowing and risk making my whole backup inaccessible.

Hello all,
Two issues
#1 ) Is there a way to prevent Time Machine from deleting the oldest backup?
Not really, short of starting TM over on a new drive or partition, or just turning it off.
In theory, you can delete newer backups via TM (see #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum), but it's unpredictable and may not be necessary anyway.
However, that deleted my previous working good backup of 10.5.8.
Are you sure? First, every TM backups is, in effect, a full backup. Second, if you don't see the older backups in the "Timeline," they may still be there, if TM has started a new "sequence" for some reason. See #17 in the FAQ Tip.
#2 ) like many people here, not knowing all my facts, I used finder to delete some old backups on another system/ext drive. I now know this is wrong. My question is simply, if I do another time machine backup, (i know it will be very long), but will all be OK? or will it always be updating content changes to a backup that is incomplete?
Do you mean on a drive you're no longer using? If so, that won't affect backups on a separate drive -- they're completely independent.
If it was on the same drive/partition, do a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on it via Disk Utility, in your Applications/Utilities folder.) If that doesn't find any errors, or fixes anything it does find, your backups are probably ok, although there may be some space you won't get back until you reformat it.
I'm not sure exactly what your situation is, so check out #17 and post back with any clarifications, like how much space is available on your TM drive, how many pre-Snow Leopard backups there are, and how much data is on your internal HD.

  • Spotlight + Time Machine woes - tried everything...

I have a 10.6.7 system with a 1 Tb internal drive (~700 Gigs of it used) and an eSATA external drive used as a TM destination. I make backups religiously, and I'm up-to-date with all the updates. I have a similar setup at home, with mostly the same data, which doesn't have the following problem, so I know it *can* work (and should!). But here's what I have.
This all started after exporting a bunch of old emails as individual files (~30 Gigs-worth - maybe 20,000 files all in all). I noticed that my Time Machine is taking forever to make backups. Not just the first time, but all the time, even when no files have changed (at least, at the user level). I've repaired both disks with Disk Utility, reset TM according to the suggestions in the TM forum, and started from scratch with a blank drive. The problem is this, as seen in Time Buddy:
    Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/Mercury External Drive/Backups.backupdb
No pre-backup thinning needed: 989.3 MB requested (including padding), 341.04 GB available

The TM often tries for like 30-40 minutes (each hour!) and then sometimes fails with
Error: Flushing index to disk returned an error: 0
Copied 3725 files (167.0 MB) from volume Raptor RAID0.
    Backup canceled.
I don't think it's a hardware problem with the drive because this used to happen when my drive was a USB2 drive (I specifically got a new eSATA drive because I thought the extra speed might help).
The problem seems to be that the Spotlight indexer is constantly busy. I followed directions to completely wipe out and rebuild the Spotlight (and this is after using SuperDuper to clone my drive to a completely clean disk, and using Cache Cleaner to do a deep cache wipe etc.).  The Spotlight rebuild took 2 days, and during this time the size of the .Spotlight... file went up and down. The time predicted by the little magnifying glass thing up in the menu bar went from 8 hours to 657 hours, but eventually it finished (when I excluded the folder of exported mail messages via privacy list). I already have the TM and other disks excluded from Spotlight.
Spotlight alternates between being quiet and usable (no dot in the magnifying glass) and mds alternating between 98% and 5% in the "top" terminal command, and all of a sudden running like crazy (dot in the magnifying glass) with a spinning barberpole and no estimate of finishing, for no apparent reason.
I've used fs_usage in terminal to determine that Spotlight was spending a lot of time on my Microsoft Entourage files, so I excluded those. Unfortunately I need it to scan my Microsoft Outlook 2011 files because I can't search for emails without it (yes, I'd love to dump the Microsoft product but I can't for now).  Now the fs_usage doesn't work anymore - it says
fs_usage: the trace facility is currently in use...
fs_usage, sc_usage, and latency use this feature.
a reboot helps, but only for a few minutes - then fs_usage says "killed" and won't restart again (giving the above message).
I'm at the end of my rope. What do I do? I need my disk indexed by Spotlight, and I need TM to be able to do its normal 3-second/hour backups after the initial one.   Where do I go next?   Is it possible that I simply have too many files here for Spotlight to work properly?
    thanks in advance,
    Mike

Yes, I did mean GUID. It was the TM drive. I did an archive and install, but keep in mind this was a brand new computer, that had a fresh install. Also, this all worked on the older system. I would try an erase and install, but i'd like to see if there is anything else to try first.
Just ran again, the freeze didnt happen but it did call out some random garageband instrument.

  • HT201250 Time Machine woes....

I have fully restored my internal hard drive using Time Machine. Now, it tells me that it cannot back up because the disc is too full. Which means I have to erase and do a full backup again.
    What's up with this???
It is such a waste of time.

See Pondini's TM FAQs, for starters.

  • Time Machine Erratic/Stalls

Add me to the list of people experiencing major troubles with Time Machine. I've been trying to use it for over two month, and have been going crazy trying to troubleshoot the difficulties. The trouble is that TM randomly stalls during the backup process. It just stops backing up; it doesn't freeze anything, or cause any other noticeable problem, and it doesn't produce any error messages in the Console application. Occasionally, it will, after very long periods, pick up and produce a completed backup once or twice a day. Now, however, it is trying to do its initial backup (after a re-formatting of the external drive), and will not complete it (it stalls at about 120 GB of 197 GB).
I had a one-week period, where it actually worked the way it should--performing hourly backups. That was, I believe, after I did a reinstall of Leopard--an archive and install, to solve other problems Leopard was having (the new Photoshop not working, the disappearance of the PDF print button, etc.). But for some reason it stopped working on the hour.
In the process of troubleshooting, I've tried Time Machine with two different, new 500 GB external drives--a LaCie, and a Western Digital MyBook, the first a USB drive, the second a firewire/USB (I tried modes of connecting for MyBook one). I've reformatted both drives various times, using both the APM and GUID partition map schemes. I've tried reformatting each drive several times, even zeroing out the data once when erasing the disk. I've done various maintenance scans of both external drives and my internal drives using both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior 4.0, and have corrected whatever errors have appeared.
It's very frustrating, but apparently not restricted to me. Any help out there?

Thanks for the tip Matthew - I can't say definitively that this has solved my Time Machine woes long-term, but I can say in the immediate, it has solved the problem and aloud a successful full backup.
I have been plagued by TM issues since the last update to 10.5.2. It will go days working perfectly, and then all the sudden stop working and report either that it could not create a file, could not write to the disk, could not read the disk, or even couldn't find the disk. Other people have reported success with various formatting/partitioning solutions - all of which I have tried and provided immediate resolution, but then TM fails back again after a couple of days. I have attempted to use various drives and connection methods all with the same result. This has become very frustrating and made Time Machine about as useful as my old Dell sitting in the corner.
I hope this fixes the problem long term, I will update at a later time after it has been successful for more than a few days. I also hope Apple is listening!
I just recently switched to the Mac and am very happy with it - save this one on-going and rather large issue.

  • Multiple Yosemite woes: programs won't start, can't enter Time Machine, etc.

    Hello Linc et al.,
I have been having Yosemite problems similar to those discussed elsewhere (e.g. iMac 27" late 2013 and Yosemite) (albeit with 10.10.1, Mid-2010 MacBook Pro): can't enter Time Machine, although it seems to be backing up; programs including Illustrator, EndNote, and Boinc don't start, or only after an hour or two (others, including Microsoft Office, seem okay). They will start normally in safe mode, but not for a newly created user. Many permission repairs carried out (seems okay except for a couple recurring printer-related messages), disk is okay, PRAM and SMC reset. Spent some time with various tech support, so most of these have been tried several times.
The solution here com.apple.xpc.launchd & com.apple.mdworker.bundles pollute logs with errors worked through one restart - there were two mystery uids, owning many files - but not through a second.
I have followed the permission repair procedure from another post (discussions.apple.com/message/27015992#27015992); the initial return was 639, and now it is 0. Restarted since then, nothing appeared to change.
Below is what I get from the test suggested in the first thread mentioned, I hope there is something informative here! I'll study it myself, but don't know what might or might not matter.
    Thanks,
    Barbara

    Thanks,
    Barbara

  • External Hard Drive woes (possibly Time Machine related)

    Hello everyone,
I am using one of the partitions on my WD My Passport for Mac (1 TB) partitioned into two sepaprate partions (both Mac OS Extended Journaled)  of 500 GB each as my backup disk for Time Machine.
Now, Time Machine seems to work fine on it for some time. However, after a period of time (~5 hours) time machine stops working. Here are the relevant logs.

When this happens, the Hard Drive makes beeping noises (each time Time Machine tries to access it). It refuses to unmount, and Disk Utility refuses to either verify or repair the hard drive. Forcibly unplugging the hard drive and replugging it does not help either. It makes beeping noises for about half a minute and then goes quiet. However, neither is it mounted nor is it visible in the disk utility.
The only way I have managed to fix this is to plug the hard drive in another mac, where it mounts without any problem. I then run disk utility to verify the hard drive (on that mac) and then when I replug the drive to my laptop, it works. Until it breaks again.
The only other "error" related to my external hard drive that I have found in system logs is also pasted below:

I don't know what the problem is, but I would like to be able to use an external. I also have another external plugged in my computer (NTFS, and I have NTFS write enabled via http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/) and that hard drive works perfectly. Also, the problem was there before I enabled NTFS write so nothing was harmed in enabling NTFS write.
    System Info
OS X 10.7.3 (problem existed with 10.7.2) as well
    RAM: 8 GB
    Macbook Pro 15" (i7 2.2 GHz, 2011 model)

OSX is having trouble reading or writing to the drive.  That's usually hardware (the drive, port, or cable).
Try different ports, cables, and combinations of the two (a plug that works fine in one port may not make good contact in a different one).
Be sure it's connected directly to your Mac -- no hubs or daisy chains, and not a port on your keyboard.
Also, what Partition Map Scheme does the drive have?  (Check via Disk Utility - select the top line for the drive -- it should show at the lower right.)

  • Time Machine on Raid 1

I have had two Time Machine external hard drives crash within the last year, so I've decided to create a Raid 1 mirror to use as my Time Machine. I understand the basic requirement is that the drives be of the same size. I have two 1TB drives, different in size by only .03TB (999.16TB versus 999.13TB). However, the drives are of different manufacturers, and one is Firewire and the other is USB. Will I have an issue creating an efficient Raid 1 array?
    Thanks,
    Nick

Thanks for the response about different connection types; that's what I was looking for. That takes me back to your other response and my reply about cloning TM periodically to another external drive. Is it possible with Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper?
    Nick
I haven't tried that, you can look over at the CCC forums if cloning a TM drive is possible and if TM will accept it afterwards.
Supposedly the only thing that can access a TM drive is TimeMachine, not EVEN ROOT USER (which CCC uses obviously), can access TM drive because of MAC (Mandatory Access Controls) built into OS X.
So Apple really ties everyone's hands with their TM solution and when your hard drive dies, or you can't use your Superdrive to c boot off the installer disk, your totally SOL with TimeMachine.
With a clone, your up on the clone in the time it takes to boot.
And, you can clone that to another drive, or a thousand drives, whatever gives you the most peace of mind.
Heck I got clones of Leopard and even Tiger laying around. All just a option boot away.
What you can do, is do both, a clone AND a TimeMachine drive, just make sure to label them so as you connect the clone OSX pops up that annoying "You want to make this a TimeMachine drive" window and you might make a mistake and say ok on a clone.
So like once a week you hook up the clone and run CCC to update it. Keep the TM drive connected all the time.
Some people do this. I don't see the need unless your prone to deleting stuff or can't do a "Save As..." for file revisions. That's the only thing TM is good for, not worth locking all one's data to being only accessible from TimeMachine if you ask me.
But using both is a option.
These forums are filled with woes about TimeMachine, but hardly any about cloning. After all a clone is a clone. Hold option and boot and it's just the same.

  • Time Machine failed because there is not enough room on the ext HD

Time Machine has been working great for a year or so, but just today I got an error message stating that it cannot backup because the ext HD hasn't enough available space.
I was under the impression that Time Machine deleted older backup content, to make room for the new? I deleted about 30GB of stuff on my internal HD, which provided enough room for this backup, but I'm anticipating the problem to reoccur.
What's up with this? Does Time Machine automatically delete old backup content to make room for the new, or what?

    OS Lucinity wrote:
I'm starting to think that perhaps the smaller TM partition was overwhelmed by the amount of data it had to backup. I didn't realize how quickly the 2 partitions it was responsible for filled up.
Yes. I'm still unsure how much data, total, you're trying to backup, but your TM space is clearly filled-up now.
The usual "rule of thumb" is, TM needs 2-3 times the space of whatever it's backing up. But it actually depends almost entirely on how you use your Mac. If you change lots of big files very frequently, then even 3 times may not be enough. But if you're a light user, you might get by with 1.5 times.
And no, you shouldn't have to manually delete backups under ordinary circumstances. TM will manage it's backups and space for you, +if it can.+
If you haven't seen it, TM's procedure is to do hourly backups and keep them for 24 hours, except the first of the day, which it keeps for 30 days. After 30 days, it makes one per week into a weekly backup which it keeps for as long as it has room. If it can't keep to this schedule, it will fail and you must decide what to do.
This can happen, of course, if there just isn't enough room. It can also happen if you suddenly put a large amount of other data in it's partition (it does need a fair amount of free space to work with).
It can also happen if TM needs to do a full backup instead of an incremental, which happens if you don't let it do any backups for several days (10, I think); or after a full system restore; or after certain hardware is replaced.
TM also can get confused if you change, move, or delete things from it's backups via the Finder; use the TM interface instead. There, you can delete a whole backup, or all backups of a particular file, etc.
Ok good to know, is there a "best-practices" Apple tutorial for TM?
Not really. Apple help has some, as does this article and the links in it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1770 but, as with most apps, detailed documentation isn't available, not even a FAQ section.
If I have to manually remove old backups, I'm more likely to find a new backup solution.
You might have to, but then you lose the ability to recover a recent previous version of a file that got deleted or changed in error, or somehow corrupted.
Your best bet is more space for TM and/or less to back up. If you have some old data that rarely if ever gets changed, you might consider copying it to DVDs, then excluding it from TM.
And I hate to add to your woes, but do you have anything off-site? As great as external drives are, they may not protect you from fire, flood, theft, direct lightning strike on your power lines, etc.

  • Time Machine/Capsule -- 2.93GHzx -- and another question.

I upgraded my PowerBook G4 (1.67GHz and 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM) from Tiger to Leopard 10.5.6. I did so largely to get Time Machine. And then I ran into all sorts of woes doing my back-ups. So I took another step and replaced my external 2TB Lacie drive (that I was using for Time Machine) with a 500 GB Time Capsule. It arrived today and is right now in the middle of its first back-up. We shall see how well it fares with Time Machine. I am crossing my fingers. Does anyone see anything right or wrong I did in this exercise?
Meanwhile, I am going to take the plunge and buy a new MacBook Pro. I want to load it up. But I have a question: Is the 2.93GHz Intel Core 2 Duo THAT MUCH better than the 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo? It costs $300 more and I’m wondering if 0.27GHz makes such a significant ($300) difference — bearing in mind that I will be running Final Cut Pro, etc, and want the best I can get in strength and speed. But I don't want to blow $300 for window dressing that does not deliver. Bottom line: is an extra 0.27 GHz that significant or that much of a game changer?
And one more question: Is it OK to use your Mac and its other apps while Time Machine is running? Or does that cause a problem?
Of course, I’m not asking you all to write a thesis paper on all this but your quick opinion would be gratefully appreciated.
Thank you -- and thank heavens for this discussion groups.
    Happy Easter and other holidays,
    Richard M.

Depends on what sort of problems you had with the LaCie. If the problem wasn't with the drive itself, you may not have gained much, if anything. TC's are more convenient in some ways, but also much slower.
And since you can't partition a TC disk, I'd advise against putting any other data there: if you ever want or have to erase all your TM backups and start over, you'll have to copy that other data somewhere temporarily.
And one more question: Is it OK to use your Mac and its other apps while Time Machine is running? Or does that cause a problem?
It's fine. You may have slower response time, especially using the internet while doing a wireless backup, but TM won't crash or fail to back up.

  • Iomega external hard drive either 'not found' by Time Machine or is now in 'read only' format

I don't know what's going on with my iomega external hard drive.  Sometimes the HD is recognised by the computer; other times it isn't; if it isn't I can restore to an earlier back up via Time Machine app; but it's like the disk isn't writable.
Ten days ago, I had trouble backing up my iMac using Time Machine.  After turning it off and restarting my external hard drive, it backed up successfully.
However, today I am trying to back up my files, and TM tells me it can't find the external hard drive.  Nothing has changed -- I have been out of town this past week -- but somehow my HD now seems to be in 'read only' format.  It does turn on, and I could restore my computer to an earlier back up.
"Mac OS X can't repair the disk.  You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk.  Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."
Annoyingly, despite my HD not showing in Finder or on my Desktop (as it usually does), when I simply turn it off I get that warning message "The disk was not ejected properly".
Have tried verifying and repairing using Disk Utility, to no avail.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.  I'm guessing this would wipe the disk clean and I'd have to create the initial back up image all over again -- I'm reluctant to do this since this HD is my only back up and if it all goes tits up I'll be up that famous creek without a paddle.
Thoughts, suggestions, input all welcome and deeply appreciated -- thank you!

It's possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app can fix it, but they're expensive (DiskWarrior is about $100), and there's no guarantee it can do it.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.
That will erase it.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #5.
It sounds very much like the disk is beginning to fail, although it's possible there's a bad port, cable, connection or power supply (if it has its own).
I'd suggest getting a new one, and using it for your Time Machine backups; once you have a good backup there, reformat the old one (and select Security Options to write zeros to the whole drive -- if that fails, you know the drive is toast).  Use it for secondary backups, per FAQ #27.   If it has failed, get a second new one for secondary backups.

  • Back up using time machine and external hard drive

    Hello,
I am having a difficult time deciding the best way to back up important documents.
    I have:
    1TB internal hard drive
3 TB external hard drive and
    1TB external hard drive
I currently have about 1TB worth of data to be stored, but that will increase to about 1.5TB once I get a bunch of stuff off the HD camera's hard drive.  I would like to keep my internal hard drive somewhat free to keep the computer running fast, but also want to make sure I am properly backed up.
Should I put ALL (or nearly all) of the files on the 3 TB external hard drive, and have time machine back that up and not worry about the rest? I'm a little weary about putting all of the files on one device even if it is backed up by TM.
If I do this, do I need to back up the 3 TB external drive in addition to using TM?
    Thanks!

  • Can not see historical data in Time Machine backup

    Hi folks
    First my setup:
       MBP Late2012
       Samsung Evo 840 SSD
external USB 3.0 1TB as TimeMachine HD
       Mac OS X Mavericks
    Now my problem.
After updating to Mavericks I've made a full backup with Time Machine.
Then I swapped the former 500TB HDD to the Samsung Evo 840 500TB.
A clean setup of Mavericks follows.
After that I restored the Backup from Time Machine.
    Everything ok. Til now.
Because everthing works fine in the past, I did not control the Time Machine.
Today I wanna restore a File from my "Pictures" folder.
    So I opened Time Machine.
    Oops.
There I can only see the latest run.
Also in the timeline on the right side the only entries are TODAY and NOW.
I can not scroll into the past.
All windows behind the current window have a black titlebar.
In Mountain lion the titlebars are grey if there is data available
and the title contains the date of the backup.
    What is the problem?
    Is there a bug?
    Did I something wrong?
    Thanx in adv.

But  you are right with "E2".
    This solved my problem.
    Thank you very much.

  • Safe to delete file from Time Machine hard drive?

Is it safe to delete a file from an external hard drive that's being used for Time Machine backups? The file is not a backup -- it's a .dmg from the manufacturer of the hard drive. Other than that one file, I don't use the drive for anything other than Time Machine.
I'm just concerned because I don't want deleting the file to affect Time Machine in any way.
    Thank you.

I have done it without issue.

  • Forgot password to access my Airport Time Capsule, can't restore Time Machine backup

It is stupid, I know, but after the first time I setup Time Machine in my Airport Time Capsule (6 months ago) i never had to use the password because it stayed stored in my Keychain.
Anyway, couple days ago I had to format the hard drive of my MacBook Pro and I did it thinking that I had a complete data backup stored in my Airport Time Capsule (encrypted data). It was late when I realized that I did not have the password written/stored anywhere. Nothing to do about it, just move on and start all over again.
I need to clean up my Airport Time Capsule and set it to factory default. I already accepted that I will lose all my data and it is okay. So far all I found was how to reset the wifi user/password but nothing about deleting stored data or reset to factory default without having the encrypted password. Can you please help me? Thanks in advance!

The encrypted data is not related to the Time Capsule.. that is purely Time Machine.
Very sorry for you.. it is one big danger when you encrypt.
    Reset to factory.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Wipe the hard disk. Open the airport utility go to the disk tab. Click on erase disk.
Select just quick erase.. it just deletes the file table and is not secure but fine for your purposes.

  • Time machine won't back up since I have restored from time machine following hard drive replacement.  I am being told there is not enough space, however the back up is less than the hard drive size

We recently had the hard drive replaced on our Mac as part of Apple's replacement programme.  Prior to sending it off for repair we did a final Time Machine back up, which was completed successfully.  SInce getting the computer back we restored everything from the backup disk using Time Machine, which all worked fine, however now we are having problems with it completing regular backups.  We receive a message each time telling up that the backup disk doesn't have enough space on it.  It is telling us that it needs in the region of 370gb and only has around 30gb available.  The computer hard drive is in the region of 350gb and the hard drive is a 400gb one.  It is almost as if it is not recognising that the data already on the disk is the back up of this computer and is trying to complete a completely separate back up as opposed to just updating the backup already on the disk.
Has anyone else got any experience of this and therefore could give me some hints on what to do.  I am reluctant to wipe the backup drive and start again, however I would prefer not to have to buy another hard drive if I can avoid it as this one is technically big enough
I look forward to getting some responses

Hi, I never use TM myself.
Have you looked through Pondini's extensive TM help site?
    http://Pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Can't imaging something not being covered there.
PS. It's generally recommended a TM drive be at least twice the size of your main drive.
