Time machine won't backup boot camp partition in Lion

The partition appears in the excludes list. If I remove and save, it reappears. The partition was being backed up under Snow Leopard.

Time Machine requires uses some features of HFS+; it won't work on FAT/NTFS file systems, as far as I know.
You could use something like Winclone to back up the Bootcamp partition from the MacOS, or natively back it up from within Windows.

Well, this is yet another "Time machine won't backup becuase there is not enough space" thread. I have searched Google and threads here but it's still a mystery why this error is occurring and it seems there is no clear solution. I also looked at the Apple Time Machine errors FAQ as well.
Here are my specs and what I have tried so far.
2010 Mac Pro Quad Core with 1 TB hard drive with 12 GB RAM. (137 GB used so far on internal Mac hard drive disk, so about 863 GB free space).
- New external 1 TB hard drive initialized as Time Machine backup disk when inserted for the first time.
The exact error I am getting is this: "This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 1.80 TB but only 999.20 GB are available."
I have tried deleting the Time Machine system preference, reinitializing the external disk, clearing the system caches with Cocktail, restarting and letting Time machine ask me all over again if I wanted to use the external drive for Time Machine. Still the same error.
My question is how on earth can 1.80 TB be required for the backup when I only have 137 GB of used space?

Two possibilities:
There's another disk (or disks) connected to your Mac. If they're formatted HFS+, Time Machine is trying to back it/them up as well. You can exclude them per #10 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). The 1.8 TB includes 20% for temporary workspace on the TM drive, so TM is estimating the backup at about 1.5 TB.
Something on your internal HD is corrupted, causing an incorrect calculation. Verify your internal HD, per #6 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum).

Time Machine won't backup to ext hard drive?

I keep receiving the error message that Time Machine won't backup to my ext hard drive since it can't create the backup file. Why? Same ext hard drive for over 2 yrs. Using iMac (early 2008) with Mountain Lion.

Is it at least twice the capacity of the original?
Is it formatted with a GUID partition?

Time machine won't backup. Says disk is full ( stand alone disk). Souldn't it delete enough to create new backup. Last backup was 7/20/11. When I click "enter time machine' it goes to mail screen and nowhere else.

If I have a Boot Camp partition (I do), will it be backed up by Time Machine as well?
How can I check? I.e. how can I open that partition from Mac OS / Time Machine?

You can backup Bootcamp Windows partition with the free WinClone to another drive (not TimeMachine)
Runs in OS X, don't think it will get updated for Lion, so watch that new cat before jumping, it's going to brick things.

I just learned the hard way that Time Machine will NOT backup iPhoto if you leave it open. In the past, I usually have iPhoto left open, and now I've lost TONS of data. Can Apple change how Time Machine works so that it backs up data of open applications?

Probably not. Few backup apps can manage to back up a single file that's being written-to by another app at the same time. What would it do with a partial file? What would YOU do with part of a photo, if you had it and could restore it?
iPhoto is much more complex than a "normal" folder -- it's a "package," with various files, indexes, and cross-references, many of which can be open at the same time -- worse, all the data that the app has written isn't necessarily on the disk yet; it's likely in an OS buffer somewhere, and may not actually go out to disk until the app is closed.
The next question is, does this mean I haven't had a REAL iTunes backup for months either? I AWLAYS keep that one open.
I can't be sure, but I think iTunes is probably ok (but by all means check it), depending on what you were doing at the time of the backup. If you were downloading a file, that file most likely wasn't backed-up; but if you were just playing songs, it's probably up to date.
Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. If you look at the messages for various backups, you may see some that mention doing a "deep traversal" on your iPhoto library, because of a "missed reservation." That's a clue that some things weren't backed-up earlier because of open file(s).
But I would agree entirely that Time Machine ought to send some sort of message when it skips things -- perhaps if something like iPhoto doesn't get backed-up in a 24-hour period.

Time Machine won't backup... because there's too much free space??

Hi all,
I'm getting a strange error from Time Machine:
"*Time Machine Error*
This backup is too large for the backup volume. The backup requires 147.8 MB but only 506.8 MB are available.
To select a larger volume, or make the backup smaller by excluding files, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine."
I should probably also note that, according to Finder, my Time Machine volume has only 27.5 MB available out of 182.89 GB.

Update: The same Time Machine Error message has just popped up again, only this time it says, "The backup requires 173.2 MB but only 823.1 MB are available."

Installed new SSD boot drive, Time Machine won't backup

I installed a new 240 GB SSD boot drive (cloned using Super Duper) in my Mac Pro and want to use it as my startup disk. When I boot up using the new 240 SSD drive and try to start Time Machine to back it up onto a 500GB external drive it tells me it failed because the estimated backup size is over 2 TB. I suspect that Time Machine still has the last backup from my old boot drive, which was a 3TB hard drive. I go to Options and tell it not to back up any of my other hard drives but that doesn't help. So now what? How can I get rid of the last backup, which was from my 3 TB hard drive, so that I can backup a 240 GB SSD on a 500 GB external drive? Or is it another problem? Help!! Thanks!!

Time Machine Won't Backup All of iMac's Partitions

I have an OWC 2TB external drive which is factory formatted for Intel based Macs, and I am running the latest Mavericks platform on a 27" iMac Intel i5.
I just started using Time Machine for the first time. My Mac is partitioned into two parts, and for some reason, Time Machine backed up both of them at first, but now my 1st partition is no longer there. Only the 2nd partition is showing up when I go to the drive in Finder as well as within Time Machine's restore mode.
It's as if Time Machine is no longer recognizing that I have 2 parts to my HD. What am I doing wrong?

Time Machine won't back up Windows Partition

When I first started using time machine my windows partition of my hard drive was automaticlly on the exclude list. I took it off and time machine would back it up. Today when I went into time machine my back ups of it were gone but it wasn't on the exclude list. I decided to add it on in order to take it off again to see if this would change things however now it won't allow me to take my windows partition off the exclude list. What can I do to fix this?

Time Machine shouldn't be able to backup a Windows partition. TM only backs up HFS+ partitions, not NTFS. You may have been mistaken that TM ever backed it up. If you are talking about a virtual machine of Windows (via Fusion or Parallels), that's a different story as you shouldn't be backing that folder up via TM anyways.

My Safari wouldn't quit, so I chose force quit from the apple icon drop down menu. When I turned my iMac back on, Time Machine would no longer work. It says I can access old data, but it won't back up any new changes. I tried utilities First Aid, but it wouldn't fully verify or repair, before stopping. I dragged and dropped the folder where I could store everything else on this 2TB Seagate external harddrive. But I could not drag and drop the backup.backup.__ files where TimeMachine resides. DoI have to reformat and lose all my saved data on Time Machine? Or is there another way?
Is it true that if you Force Quit while Time Machine is backing up it ruins the file? How could you know Time Machine is backing up? There's no littl icon on the top right.

Force-quitting Safari won't affect your backups. Did you also force power down on your Mac? That can affect the data on your internal HD and/or backups.

What message did it send? Sometimes you have to run Repair Disk 2 or 3 times to get everything fixed. See #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

Do you mean you're putting other data, besides your backups, on the TM drive? In the same partition? If so, that's not a good idea -- see Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #3.

That's correct -- you cannot copy damaged backups.

If you force-quit an app (like Safari), no. If you force power off on your Mac, that can damage the File System on any HD -- your internal HD and/or any externals, including your backups. Usually that damage can be repaired by Disk Utility.
How could you know Time Machine is backing up? There's no littl icon on the top right.
Go to System Preferences > Time Machine and check the little box at the bottom to Show Time Machine status in menu bar.

Time Machine won't backup my external drive

I have my iTunes library stored on an external drive and I want Time Machine to back it up.
I have a brand new TM drive. I've been using it without problems to backup my 250Gb iMac. As soon as I add the external drive to the TM backup, it fails. I have other data on this drive that I don't need backed up, so I've only included the sub directory iTunes (by excluding all the others).
I followed a couple of similar threads, but the situations don't seem to apply. I did install Time Machine buddy so I could see the error messages.

The mystery deepens . . .
I tried to replicate the problem. Renamed an empty partition from Misc2 to Misc2/test and copied some docs into it and ran a backup.
Sure enough, the message refers to it as Misc2:test and the deep traversal took almost a minute and a half (one folder, 3 sub-folders, total of about 30 items!), but it ran successfully.
So renamed it again, to Music/DVDs exactly like yours. No deep traversal, and it does call it Music:DVDs in the messages, but it backed-up properly.
Perhaps it was fixed in Snow Leopard? Or just another of TM's many little quirks? Perhaps the phase of the moon?
Edit: Some of your posts say you're on 10.5.3, others 10.6.2. Which is correct?
